Love the look and feel of this little SUV but after driving it 4 months it's collision avoidance system keeps going off FOR NO REASON. I have turned off all of what I call the "nanny" safety features off the minute I bought it so how is this feature even going off at all. I can be out on a country road, no lines even on the road and it hits the brakes and yanks me left into oncoming traffic, it has happened on the freeway going 65 miles an hours and also during city driving, I have had it to service several times and they are clueless. Someone in Sweden was supposed to have gotten back with us within 30 days, it's been 45 days now and I guess no one cares. Also at 5 months old it had an airbag replaced already and now the side panel falls down constantly so it needd to go back to have that fixed.

Is there a zero star rating option?

I have only owned this brand new Volvo xc40 2023 for three months and it has been in the shop for 29 days and counting. The IHU (radio) has been replaced. That replacement has been “fixed” once and it is now in the shop with the same issue- the IHU shuts down and this time with a warning not to drive the vehicle. The IHU is the hub that controls everything from the climate control to the phone to the radio and navigation. It’s a big deal when it fails. There are other issues as well. The car shuts off if you open the door while it’s in park, the driver’s seat sometimes moves on its own and twice after turning off the ignition, I got a warning upon opening the door that the engine was still running (it was not). You might say I have a lemon (and I’m sure I do), but I’m also not confident that other Volvos won’t have similar problems. I would steer clear of a 2022 xc40.

Defects from day one and budget level of service

Bought a new 2021 xc40 recently. The car has had numerous dangerous malfunctions including auto start/stop not resuming the engine after a brief stop at a traffic light, and the city safe auto braking going off randomly nearly killing me when traveling at 50mph. Bringing it in for service is a struggle since many Volvo dealers don’t have loaner fleets unlike virtually all other luxury brands. To make matters worse, owner support hotline/Volvo on call doesn’t know ANYTHING about the tech systems in your car. They don’t even know what the system is when you tell them by name using their own lingo. Highly disappointed and heartbroken since I had so much respect for Volvo brand before owning. Now I would advise others to stay away and consider other luxury brands. Volvo is masquerading as a luxury brand but their service has not caught up, at the dealer nor corporate level.

Think Twice and then Twice some more

Picked up the car on a Saturday, emissions light pops up 2 days later. Needed some type of valve replacement; also turns out there is a software brake recall...really? Spent 3 days at the service location, no loaner provider. Got it back, 2 days later, emissions light indicator back on, schedule to go back for service. Level of frustration is unsurmountable, think twice and then think twice some more.

Numerous problems

I purchased a Momentum XC40 less than a year ago and have had numerous problems, a few of them quite serious. First of all, while driving in the center lane of a freeway within adaptive cruise control engaged, another vehicle change lanes in front of me, not dangerously, and quite a ways ahead. The collision avoidance braking engaged (needlessly, there was plenty of distance between us) and the brakes “stuck” and stayed engaged. With traffic whizzing around me on both sides I was slowed to about 25 mph and had to navigate, with some difficulty and in some danger, to a very small shoulder. A concrete wall prevented me from pulling fully off the road. I put the vehicle in neutral and then back into drive and the problem went away. I was able to drive on. The Apple Car Play became intermittent, sometimes not displaying, and showing to be inactive in the Apps screen, even when the phone was plugged into the Car Play port. (Unlike other vehicles with Car Play capability, only one specific USB port can be used for Car Play in the XC40). This was mostly resolved by the dealer replacement of the vehicle’s USB hub. I say “mostly”, because sometimes Car Play either dies not start automatically, and I have to go to the Apps screen to manually start it, or else sometimes it doesn’t show active even in the apps screen. Very intermittent. When navigating to the online user manual in the console display, I sometimes have no option of going back to the operational displays. I cannot get back until restarting the vehicle. I was AGAIN in a dicey highway situation, in the middle of a multi-highway merge situation, then there was huge WHOOSH sound and the vehicle started running slower. I received a notice on the console that the vehicle w@s running under reduced power. This was REALLY REALLY bad, I was in the worst possible situation for this to happen, AGAIN in the middle of a busy freeway, and I thought the engine was going to die right there. Had the vehicle towed to the dealer, and it transpired that a turbo duct had come loose. This was the 2nd time in a precarious situation that the vehicle failed me. They obviously have quality issues, including that the console software and the adaptive braking systems are buggy. I’m getting rid of this dangerous vehicle this month. Definitely my last Volvo. This has been a very disappointing and even dangerous vehicle. I recommend staying Way from Volvo.
