A Nice Used Wagon, Shop Carefully.
I bought this car from a private seller who had all service records since new, so I knew what I was getting into, which was a very well maintained, if high-miles car. It had a large amount of work done to it prior to my purchase, including the Infamous prop-shaft replacement (still needs a torque-tube bushing and rear shocks), so I knew I wouldn't have to worry about that for another 150K miles... The car is very comfortable, performs reasonably, handles well, holds a huge amount of stuff, is great in the snow, parts prices for repair are high. I have no bad things to say about the interior materials or fit of the car, but mine was assembled in Belgium, maybe that makes a difference?
Drives great, especially to repair shop
Love driving this car - in any weather. Seats are terrific and adjust to any position. Performance - esp. handling - is very good (and I have had Audis and a Porsche before). Just drove 3500 miles on vacation and was rarely uncomfortable. Echoing some other reviews, trips to Volvo repair are WAY too frequent and very expensive. Eats brakes ($1k for all 4) and turn signal bulbs. Front susp supports replaced on both sides ($750 per side), generator, air pump, weld a door hinge ($500 each), it's endless. Fuel usage around 17mpg in city but about 28 on hwy.

Our Best Car Ever!
My family purchased a used 1998 V70 XC Wagon and we have absolutely no complaints. The ride is phenominal, especially in snow. Aside from oil changes, we have yet to visit the repair shop. This is our second Volvo wagon (last one was a 94 850). If you're looking for a versatile, powerful, sporty vehicle, you'll like the V70 XC.
My wonderful Volvo
I bought my Volvo V70 as a minivan alternative - with the 3rd seat option it can seat 7. It's wonderful. It's a luxury car with a great sound system, powerful brakes and sits so smoothly on the road that I wonder how I'll ever be able to drive a 'cheap' car again. Best of all, I know that my family is safe.
