Great small SUV!

2024 Volkswagen Taos SEL 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

I ended up purchasing a fully loaded SEL 4Motion Taos and really like it. The sunroof/moonroof is a big hit amongst the backseat passengers and the Beats speakers provide a good sound! The backseat is quite spacious and felt larger than the Tiguan. The turbo engine provides some pep, but can also be a bit jerky. Once you know this about the car, you’ll get used to driving it with less/more acceleration, accordingly. I wish the car had front parking sensors and a better backup camera. The Taos lacks these safety features, which is something I didn’t think to ask about (dumb on my part). It’s also missing an automatic liftgate, which isn’t a dealbreaker but definitely something to consider if you’ve got your hands full with groceries and kids. All in all, the Taos is a great car!

Had this vehicle just over 2 months and it has been flawless. fit and finish is great, and comfort is superb and i am 6'"3. this is one of the smoothest running vehicles i have ever owned and I have had many. if you are someone who does your own maintenance you will love this vehicle, it is very easy DIY. highly recommend this vehicle.

New rear breaks after 12,000 miles

Charlee3, 06/27/2024

Required rear breaks @ $795 with only 12k in miles on the car. This following numerous engine and fuel pump alerts over the past year. Total garbage. The dealer said they use small brake pads in the rear that wear out quickly and better Tiguan brakes in the front. WHY? So I can pay $795 for service/parts fees?? What a scam.

0% apr loan and still bad...

James Bay, 07/10/2024
2024 Volkswagen Taos SEL 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
17 of 22 people found this review helpful

I should have known why VW was giving out 0% APR loans on this model. It is a horrible car! And when I got to the dealer there must have been over 100 of these on the lot! They can't get rid of them. But I bought one anyway after watching about 20 positive YouTube review videos (all must have been paid reviewer's). I got the SEL 4 motion because I would eventually need the all wheel drive for local weather conditions. The problems started after leaving the dealership. 1. Lane assist error, then stopped working altogether. 2. Cruise control stopped working 3. Center console touch screen froze up. 4. Android auto froze up 5. Speakers stopped working 5. Clutch and/or transmission "jerks" you when in first gear going to second 6. Headlights went out 7. Dash monitor flickering All intermittent except for Lane assist and forward monitoring. Those are still gone. So I guarantee when I take it to the dealer, they are going to tell me they didn't find anything wrong. As you can tell, all are electronic related. So something must be wrong with the wiring or computer. I would think there should be log files. But I don't trust VW actually telling me the truth after going through the all day haggling with the lying sales people. I traded in my beloved Audi for this price of sh&t thinking it was the same manufacturer. But, the Taos is built in Mexico!!! I am screwed now because in my state, there are no exchanges. Period. One of these days the transmission or something serious is going to go wrong with this thing while on a freeway and I will be in an accident. But VW doesn't care....

Boomer return to VW with a Taos S

About 8 weeks and 1.5K miles on my new 24' Taos S, my first turbo so takes some getting use to (Commander 4x4 w/5.7L V8 went to a friend). and I knew the FWD would be like some 80s and 90s cars I had. I was looking for brand new and the Taos has easy entry/exit and nice seat height. It's a bit more wind noise but not so bad. It has a nice solid feel. Great driving position, great cargo. Overall much more good than bad. Just did a Raleigh-DC-and-back in one day. just about 3.75 hours each way, plus 30 minutes to load up 5 dining room chairs and 6 paintings. 39.5 mpg avg for the day on regular grade gasoline. I was able to get within $50 of Edmunds price (blue) And so far the AC has kept up fine. BTW, I owned 2 other VWs; a 1958 Beetle and a 1970 pop-up camper. I have fond memories of both. UPDATE: After ten months and 6500 mixed miles I love this car even more. I keep it in sport mode almost exclusively. Not quite fun, but never disappoints.

Lots of upgrades are standard. Purchased the SE. Upgraded seats are very comfortable and heat up well with the seat warmers. Added AWD. Handles well. Heated steering wheel. New review. Poor acceleration, no power, poor gas mileage. Too much empty space. Wouldn't lease again. Tested other SUVs. Came back to the Taos, perfect size, not too long. Seats five comfortably. Back up camera, blind spot mirrors, emergency need to stop all standard features. Good sound system. Excellent customer service by Niello Volkswagen here in Sacramento. 18" Continental wheels. Drives like a more expensive car. Purchased the Pylite Grey with black interior with hints of cobalt blue accent trim on the dash. Love my new car.

I like just about everything on the car; from the engine response, handling, braking, and gas mileage. What could use some improvement is the road noise. It's a little loud on rough pavement or black top. It could be the tires. I bought the car new and it came with a tire brand I've never heard of. I will try a different brand when the tires need to be replaced.

Hard review to write

On one hand I love this little SUV. It’s enjoyable to drive. A good size to maneuver and park and it’s very nice looking. Comfortable inside. Nice moonroof. On the other hand my radio/infotainment has had frustrating issues since just a few days after purchasing and dealing with VW has only made it worse. Between pointless overnight stays at the dealership for the Taos and my wife and I having to share our other vehicle unnecessarily to VW Care doing literally nothing to help besides weekly/biweekly calls to tell me there’s no news and the mystery part that took them a month to diagnose to then the mystery part being on an indefinite back order to now having a 5 month old vehicle with a radio that makes odd loud noises and occasionally shuts off and hopefully turns back on (it doesn’t turn back on every time, sometimes we need to turn the car off then back on to reset it) is an infuriating start to owning a VW. VW care basically told me there’s nothing that can be done and it’s up to me to follow up with the dealership (that has already failed to communicate with me multiple times) for my brand new vehicle with the part that I feel like I’ve been lied to about multiple times. Between my own experience and countless bad reviews all over the internet it’s hard to recommend this vehicle. Honestly I would avoid it. It’s beyond aggravating to have problems with a vehicle before you make even make a payment on it. When the issues aren’t happening I enjoy the Taos but I’m left waiting for the next problem to happen. Currently with just over 3000 miles.

I had a 2022 SEL. Loved the car but had a few first year bugs. Not serious enough to change my opinion of the car. Went to dealer to get warranty work done and the manager said we want you to be totally happy so since the new ones have 0% interest, I was able to roll in some neg equity because I never put money down, if I do, I just pay cash, and my payment went down. What a deal. Happy to see dealers and manufacturers stand behind the product. Very UNLIKE my Subaturd.

The Taos has been a pleasant surprise. The fuel economy is better than advertised. I'm getting 39 to 40 mpg consistently. For a small SUV it has plenty of passenger room and a good amount of cargo space. Nice safety features and a well designed interior. I'm glad I came back to Volkswagen.

VERY weird gear shifting/don't buy this car

BAG, 07/28/2024
2024 Volkswagen Taos SE 4dr SUV AWD (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)
8 of 11 people found this review helpful

This car feels a bit dangerous due to the gear shifting that is so bizarre and unresponsive to human input. You put on the gas and it putt-putts for 2 seconds then ZOOMS forward. Dangerous if trying to, say, turn from a red light. I have a young person learning to drive and would never let her use this car. I actually thought we had a lemon until reading all the reviews about that issue as well as many others we haven't encountered yet but probably will. Edmunds should change its rating

I bought the S (basic entry) model because of my budget. I had a horrible experience at the Deel dealership in Miami during the purchase of that car, but the car is not to blame for this. The good: great on gas, surprisingly big trunk for a small SUV, peppy (but still underpowered) engine. The bad: low quality rear view camera, no outside touch buttons on the doors for locking and unlocking, no built-in garage door opener in the rear view mirror and sluggish automatic transmission. The ugly: I haven’t encountered any yet but I read some very scary costumers’ reviews after I bought it about the engine cutting off, rear brake pads waring out very quickly and unreliable electronics, but so far haven’t encountered such issues and hope I don’t.

Three words: HEAD GASKET ISSUES

Charles , 12/17/2024

This vehicle checked all the boxes we were looking for. And we were really enjoying it until the low coolant light came on at just 22,000 miles. Took it into the dealership, and sure enough, it has a bad head gasket just like the 2022 and 2023 year models did. It’s unfortunate to see Volkswagen quality going down. This is our third and final VW purchase. My 1988 Ford F150 (with original head gasket btw) shouldn’t be more reliable than a brand new vehicle. Buyer beware.

I think the Edmunds reviewer did a great job describing what the Taos is. I love the handling, space, tech, fuel economy and looks. I have the AWD version and have averaged 29 mpg to date. The transmission is lazy with a bias for fuel economy, but I'm used to the DSG from my Golf GTI, so I know how to take over and get the most out of the engine. I just really love the car and am happy with the purchase. I'm not an SUV person, and this car is great.

My Park City, Utah car!

I needed an inexpensive AWD SUV to leave at our second home in Park City, Utah. After looking and driving the closest competition (Hyundai Kona, Subaru Impreza) I decided on the VW Taos S based on price and standard features such as Apple CarPlay, Adaptive Cruise Control, non-CVT transmission, heated seats, and back-up camera. I wish it had power seat adjustment and keyless entry (available on SE trim), but I didn't want to spend an additional $2000 for the SE. The VW is a little roomier than the other cars as well plus it has the German car driving feel which I like. The other thing that appealed to me was the VW dealer was not pushy or hard sell - didn't try to add on a bunch of unnecessary stuff. I'm not sure this is true of all VW dealers, but Capitol VW in San Jose was definitely low pressure. I got a good deal on a 2024 just as 2025's are starting to arrive, so I feel great about this purchase.

This is possibly the worst car ever made in the history of cars. The engine shuts off at lights (no fix). The brakes wear very quickly. Replaced mine at 21k, and paid OUT OF POCKET because scammy VW is not willing to recall this serious and life threatening issue. They were at 2ml, when they are supposed to be 11ml. Just replaced the engine fan, and HEAD GASKET? Like, why is that even a thing?! Luckily those 2 things were under warranty. The video console blinks out when you are reversing. The car has no pick up and is no fun to drive. The only good thing about this car is the color.

Never thought about buying an SUV

We bought this Taos on the first business day of 2024. It's a hard change for me from the 2013 Jetta we also have. BUT, my wife likes it. When looking, we tried Equinox, Trax, Malibu. My wife had one new requirement since we now have people to ride in the back seat. That was a vent for the heater/AC that could be controlled by the back seat passengers. The only one that had it was the Taos. The Taos also has something even the Jetta didn't have. The front part of the driver's seat can be lowered manually ever so slightly. This helps with my wife's hips since their is so much metal in her hips and back. She also likes the back up camera because she doesn't have to try to turn to look. NOW FOR THE DISLIKES!! Don't like the screen in the middle of the dashboard! Too old to try to learn this stuff! Where is the CD player? Last dislike-where is the suicide strap above the driver's door?? Sorta neat though-two Volkswagen's in the driveway-both dark blue.

We purchased a new 2024 SEL at the end of the year and got a very good deal. Cannot believe all the tech the car has. Love the adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and the wireless Apple Carplay. Love the placement of the wireless phone charger too. Also, cannot believe this car also offers heated and ventilated seats in this class of car along with the enormous panoramic sunroof. Feels very premium for this class of car. We purchased the car in Illinois and drove it down to Florida and continued to be impressed with the drive/comfort quality of the car. The car is extremely roomy and has a very solid build quality. We haven't had a VW in our family since our 2000 VW New Beetle and forgot how nice these German cars drive/handle. We compared many other brands when making our car purchase decision and are very happy with our choice.

Bought my Taos last April after the old car got hit. Overall it has been great in all types of conditions and traffic. All of the features work great and my mobile phone connects flawlessly to the radio. For a small suv it can really get up and go when needed. The only downside is the hesitation when accelerating from a stop. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a small suv without the high price tag.
