2023 Kia Niro
My last (and only car, the one I inherited as a 17 year old close to a decade ago now) was a 2012 Lexus ct200h. My comparison is really only to that. The Kia Niro 2023 so far compares -interior and size wise- to the 2023 Mazda cx - 30. The Mazda felt closer to the Lexus luxury-wise. But the Kia is still spiffy and spacious. It smelled badly of off gassing plastic when I got it, but the … plastic sheeting was still on the seats when I drove it off the lot with 5 miles on it. The gas milage has been consistently at ~51 mpg driving around the suburbs of DC. It handles well in rain, but it does not accelerate quickly in eco mode. You can not play aggressive east coast driver in this car if you’re in eco mode. Sport mode will let you, obviously at a cost to fuel efficiency. The car takes tight turns well, is very easy to park and feels like a nice medium between a sedan and a suv. I can comfortably drive the four teen girls I babysit to sports practice with their gear. Compared to the decade old Lexus hybrid, the Kia gets better gas milage, has better visibility, and feels sturdier on the road. The blind spot detection is really nice, as is the lane assistance/cruise control. The apple CarPlay is well integrated and smooth - something I wasn’t used to with the Lexus and the screen is at a nice height for following the GPS. The brakes can be a little grippy at times, but that could be an issue my driving.
While I was on a budget and confined to the LX base trim, I do think it would be worth it to upgrade the trim if you can. I say this only because I have to manually lock the car (press the button on the key instead of tapping the handle to unlock) and also have to physically turn the key to start the car. That is my biggest complaint with the car, and barely one at that. I’m very happy with the car I chose, so far.
