Elegantly Thrilling, Brutal Silk Bow Tie!

2010 Porsche Boxster
I have searched for a used 2009-2011 Base Boxster manual 6 speed for some time now, years in fact. Base, because I want to avoid the S model's tendency to bore score, 2009 or newer to avoid a dreaded catastrophic IMS bearing in the earlier years, 6 speed because I tend to enjoy controlling things, and not too new to avoid the higher prices and dead electronic steering. In a perfect … world, a white 987.2 Cayman would be spot on, but I would settle for a Boxster, and that I did. But it was SPPED YELLOW! Not a color that I would have chosen, but for a 2010 purchased in 2019 with only 38,000 miles, I figured that $22K was a great deal at the time. The car had had no paint work, the roof looked perfect, the seats were flawless, and the controls and dials showed zero wear. The motor hummed, without a tick, and no smoke came out of the exhaust upon cold starts. BUT it was YELLOW, speed Yellow (sounds like saying, Bond, James Bond - but he would have driven either black or grey, right!). It had speed yellow gages, and seat belts, which matched the exterior paint, with black leather and sparse grey trim on the inner steering wheel and split the lower dash from the upper. I drove it and was impressed. I had driven a number of 911s and Caymans, had owned a few BMWs, an M being one of them, and owned a Honda S2000 longer than any other car - longer than both Supras or my 944. So for me to love the feel of the Boxster really shocked me. The longer I have owned it the more I love it. The NSX that I used to drive on occasion, when I sold Acuras, along with my S2000 would still have to rank along side of my Boxster I suppose, but my Porsche just feels more dominant and meaty than either or those. In the mountains of North GA, or running the Tail of the Dragon in Western NC, the Boxster delivers a sticky will, determined not to release its grip in the tight corners, and launches out of them with silky smooth ease. Granted the Cayman is more beautiful with its sleek fast back and stunning hips flowing from each side, but that isn't enough to sacrifice the unobstructed view of a glorious spring day or miss the thrill of feeling the wind blasting by around you, or incremental elevations of the exhaust note as you accelerate, having just experienced it's baffle when you let off of the throttle. Yes, this Porsche is just want the doctor ordered to break the monotony of the day, and reconnect me to the environment around me. I have no regrets, its the best car purchase of my life, of which I have had far too many. The wheels are a limited edition black Porsche OEM wheel, special ordered with the matching Speed Yellow beauty ring painted near the tire bead on the edge of the wheel. Of course that majestic gold Porsche shield is dead center, as usual. The black and yellow combo is growing on me these days. I love the seating position in the Boxster, I have shrunk from 6'1" to a flat six feet these days, but I have plenty of head room, and even with with my extra wide shoulders, I never feel cramped. The weird cup holders still bother me, they flip out of the dash above the glove box, and can barely hold a coffee cup (which I never have in the car), I constantly fear that my water bottles and soft drinks will flip out into my lap or upon the passenger's legs or worse. Why they did not mount just one in the center console, I will never understand. Maybe its the emphasis on driving. Triggering the shifter just a tick below the red line in each gear, is the only way to drive this elegant beast. It only has 255hp, so maintaining RPMs within a 1,000 of the Redline is optimal. You have to be a great driver to master this car without disappointment. I have never needed more horsepower, and do not expect that I ever will, unless I ever get her on a legitimate road course or legal track, and then I think I could fare well with what I have. I had uber HP in my 69 Mach I, which was great in a straight line at the airport, but then where do you go? (That 351 Cleveland's rumble did sound however) I totaled that car in a curve at 45mph! So yeah, give me that Porsche philosophy any day. I do not have the premium sound, but my unit does deliver enough volume to hear crisply at 80mph on the interstate in Montana. With the heavy traffic all around me in Atlanta, it still did great. The controls are easy to use and well thought out, a problem many designers are fumbling with these days. After a few days I didnt have to look over to find them, I could keep my eyes on the road. The hands free phone is great, and my 2022 iphone still connects with the 2010 head unit! Ive had other vehicles that my newer phones would never find. The steering wheel is adjustable, feels great, and looks amazing. The previous wheels in the 911s and 987s was horrid, that ugly center almost triangular blob, far worse than any fried egg headlight might have been (and they were terrible). But the simple concentric circles in the 987s' steering wheel is classic. The interior was a vast improvement over the previous Ford Taurus inspired Porsche puddle and plops interiors. My 2010 looks great, but I must admit that the 918s look even better than my 987. So well done Porsche. But if you buy a 987 Cayman or Boxster, you can hold your head up high, and will not need to be ashamed of that preschool-esque Taurus interior. By the way, you can change your own brakes and brake sensors on a 987 with a tire tool, jack, and a few wrenches. It took me about an hour, and most of that was jacking the car up and down, and removing and remounting the wheels. Watch a Youtube video once and you can do it! You can do it for 25% of the cost. You can also change your oil, but it is a bit of a pain. Use Mobile 1 or Liquid Molly, I use Molly. I can not emphasize enough that you do not need to buy a 2008 or older model, due to the IMS issues. Just trust me on that one. Or buy a 2001-2005 and have your mechanic immediately install the upgraded ceramic bearing, but it isn't cheap - do your research. And if its a 6 speed, remember that your shifter cable WILL snap on you every 30,000 miles of so. Your shifter will be loose and wobble, because the cable to the transaxle will snap at the end. Its a defect. Its easy to check if the car is in the air, so if you aren't mechanically inclined, have your German dude check it. If you change it, it will run you $300, if you get a mechanic to do it. He will charge $700 for the job, but the dealer will be more. Avoid the PDK auto transmission, it is greatly expensive to repair. Stick to the manual 6 speed, even with the faulty cable. If you find one that the convertible top will not go up and down, but you hear the motor running when you push the button, thats great!!! Why? Because some car salesman tried to put the top down without releasing the roof latch and he snapped two $12 plastic ball joints that connect the control rods to the roof, one on each side. Anybody can order them online and snap them on, and bingo, your roof works. If you buy from a non Porsche dealer, they will think its a money pit and may save a few grand on the car! The OEM wheels can run over $1,000 each, so check them closely. The base Cayman and Boxsters from 2009-2012 are super dependable. For an enthusiast, there is no better, more dependable car (well, except the Honda S2000, but they are impossible to find, that haven't been abused or altered). The newer Porsche's have too much electronic that only the dealer can fix. Avoid parking sensors!!!
