better gas mileage than expected
I also tested the Forester, Tiguan and CX5 and found the RAV fit me best and checked all the right boxes. I didn't consider the CRV because I don't trust their turbo 1.5 liter motor. I find the RAV styling and ergonomics to be great, and the standard XLE dash has a clear and elegant layout. The interior is more handsome than the Forester and the ergos are better than the CX5. My spouse has a Camry so we may have a bit of Toyota familiarity bias. Everything but the "entune" app works exactly as I would expect, and the placement of the controls falls right where I look for them, the informational displays are logical and appealing. The safety features and things like auto-headlight-dimming, heated steering wheel and seats, radar cruise work great. On paper, the CX5 should be the same size or roomier than the RAV but I'm 5'11" 220# and the RAV seats fit me better than the CX5. Also, the CX5 joystick controls were not intuitive for me at all. I wanted to like the CX5 more, it is the best looking inside and out, but the interior was too tight, it seemed a bit claustrophobic, and the gas mileage and ergonomics were not as good as the RAV. I liked the Forester as my second choice but where the RAV has an elegant black interior, the Forester was beset by shiny or unattractive orange interior trim pieces (on the model-equivalent sport package) and the interior styling looked more like the bargain Impreza trim which, while they drive nice, is not a compliment. The Tiguan rode great and was beautiful and practical but VW reliability and cost of ownership are similar to Audi so it lost out on the long term financial outlook. The Forester was great in most ways but the less-appealing styling and long term cost of maintenance (parts and service) were a deciding factor. All four of these SUVs seemed to handle fine, with the Tiguan making the best noises on the road and the RAV being slightly louder but not far off the others. Reading the reviews, I agree that when the gearbox is set to "eco mode", low speed rolling starts (creeping through stop signs, for example) are sometimes a bit jerky, as if the car may be thinking about trying to start in 2nd gear (8 speed auto trans) to optimize gas mileage. The payback is that I'm getting 29-32mpg in mixed driving and 35-37mpg on rural trips (~55mph). This is better mileage than advertised and I've usually gotten worse than advertised for the same commute. Also, if I put the gearbox in normal or sport mode in the city, it shifts great and that problem does not appear. In the end, the RAV4 won out for me on ergos and styling, interior and out, and predicted reliability and resale value. I think the RAV4 is a great looking vehicle inside and out, understanding that it's a subjective opinion and others may disagree. I kept my last car for 13 years so the long term value and reliability are perhaps more important to me that others who turn cars over more frequently. I'm really happy with my decision to purchase this vehicle. UPDATE: Toyota has resolved the herky-jerky transmission issue via an ECU mapping update. I Lemoned Out and STILL got Scammed
I traded in a really nice Ford Fusion for the 2019 Adventure model in March 2019. The car made an awful noise and Toyota manufacturing basically has not fix as of September 2019. They are still selling the Adventure model, even though they are totally defective and make a terrible noise. Because my garbage vechile was in the service dept in excess of 37 days, I was able to "return it" and trade for a non-AWD model that has a LOWER STICKER PRICE, for the exact same monthly payments + $800 arbitrarily charged to me as a result of mileage. What a garbage company. I hope anybody who bought one reports how horrible it is to anybody that will listen.

Like the 2016 outgoing model much better
I test drove the 2019 RAV LE AWD at my local dealer since it was end of my lease on the 2016 Rav4. I didn't like the sound of the engine compared to the 2016. The steering in the 2016 is super responsive but no so in the new 2019. Overall, I don't really care for the new design as it looks more like the competition (cross between Rogue and Jeep). The older model drives so much better that I wonder what they did to the winning design? I know the ground clearance is a little higher than outgoing model but it seems to me it would be a down grade. I decided to purchase our 2016 as the new 2019 just doesn't compare and is definitely not worth the higher sticker price. I think Toyota better be careful moving forward as they had a winning design with plenty of sales.

Grinding on the Adventure: Fixed by Dealer
UPDATED AGAIN: Now the radio needs to be replaced because back speakers quit working. Two weeks to get part -- we'll see about that. UPDATED: It took about a week, but the grinding appears to be fixed at cost of about $1,100 to Toyota. The service adviser told me that the mechanic was able to replicate the transmission noise and that this is a "known issue" but not a safety issue subject to recall. The part was on back order, so the dealer had the car a couple of extra days. Drove it all weekend, both on the freeway and in suburban stop-and-go traffic and the noise is gone! I do like the RAV 4 overall now that this issue appears solved. Maybe it was coincidence, but as I was picking up my car -- another brand new Adventure identical to mine was pulling in for service. Disappointing that Toyota would let them be sold before fixing them. Original Post Below: Like many here -- I am experiencing this grinding issue. The dealer has ordered this part and I'll drop back in to let everyone know if this is the fix. Nice toy but...
I noticed a lot of wind noise while driving on the highway, and from the engine as well.
