2008 Toyota Camry Solara SLE V6 2dr Convertible (3.3L 6cyl 5A)

Car is for my wife. She wanted quiet, comfortable, sporty and spacious. Not an easy combination for a convrt under $30K. Tested: Sebring V6, Mustang V6 & VW Eos converts. Solara has best combination of space, features and price. This was 4th and last car we drove. She knew she wanted it at only 30 seconds into the test drive. Pluses 1. Top that does NOT fold down into fairly roomy trunk. You won't have to rearrange the contents of the trunk to put the top down. Ever. 2. Practically no engine and wind noise 3. Comfortable rear seating (true but hard to believe) 4. Solid comfortable ride & handling 5. Excelent ergos and cockpit for driver & front passenger 6. Peppy engine No Minuses

Best Features

Toyota has a unique combination of workmanship, ergonomics, engine performance, handling and functionality.

Worst Features

The boot that covers the top when it is down needs to be easier to install, remove and store. Make it out of a flexible material that rolls up, takes less space when not in use, and can be inserted into a long lasting protective cover that can be safely stored in trunk. Clear plastic baggie is junk.

It's been 7 years, less than 70,000 miles since I posted the original review. We still have the 2008 Solara Convertible. Once again, Toyota quality has proven to be a disappointment. If you are thinking of buying this car used..... stay the heck away. While initial quality seemed high, long term quality has been poor. Remember that my wife has put only 70 K on this POS. Most important, we were left on the side of the road by a DEAD TRANSMISSION at about 30,000 miles. Since then, its been the one annoying thing after another. Start with a navigation system that cuts most of its functions out as soon as the car moves, and add the sound on the radio dropping out randomly. The quality of interior finished materials has been a joke. The carpet pulled away from the passenger side because it was not cut properly. The fabric on each sun visor tore . The vinyl and plastic trim around the interior of the car has faded from the sun -- at different rates -- so what started out as brown all over is now a chalky brown/white and brown. The cheapo particle board trunk floor broke apart so the trunk floor is no longer flat. The garage door opener transmitter is not reliable. Despite one replacement and numerous complaints to Toyota, the transmission continues to shift roughly. The engine over-revs after starting up and Toyota can't or won't fix it. The exhaust smells like rotten eggs (really stinks) after after acceleration and at stop lights. This is especially annoying with a convertible. The convertible top is wearing thru where it folds to go into the trunk. There is a mildew smell in the vehicle when the top is up and we can't find a leak. The driver seat is worn out. The bumpers have no protective trim AND paint on them is so thin that the least amount of contact scrapes it down to the nasty black mark plastic underneath.
