Used 1996 Toyota Avalon XL 4dr Sedan Consumer Reviews
Avalon: 133k of Reliability & Value
I've driven my Avalon for six years after buying it used, driving on a combination of high speed freeway and beat up lousy DC streets. The car is bulletproof. No mechanical problems at 133,000 miles. Never replaced timing belt. People get in the car, cross their legs in the back seat, and ask, "what is this car??" Used two different Toyota dealers over this time, but neither was worth a damn. Luckily the cars don't break, so you don't have to see them much.
love my avalon
I have owned this car for a few months and I love it already. It rides beautifully and is very classy. Also this is a very strong and solid car, I was hit by a large pickup truck and there was minimal damage. I have a lot of faith in this car. I am very glad I bought it.

Only car I've liked after two years
I've had a Merecedes roadster, a couple of Volvos, several Buicks, Oldses, and other comfy cars but this '96 Avalon is the best. The suspension has had strut problems, but otherwise, at 122K, it's a fine-running, easy on the body kinda car. And although it has a "Cashmere Beige" stodgy exterior, it has surprising performance and can really scoot when you need it to. If you can find an Avalon at a good price, BUY IT!
Solid, comfortable, reliable, bland
I bought this car used in August of '96, with 13,300 miles on it. It now has 92,300 miles, so I have driven it 79,000 miles in 10.5 years - an average of 7,500 miles/year. The car has been utterly reliable; I've spent less than $5,000 in maintenance over the years I've owned it, including three sets of tires and an occasional detailing. That works out to less than 7 cents per mile. Most of its mileage has been around town (21 mpg) with a few long road trips (24 mpg). The Avalon is a comfortable car, and handsome in a bland sort of way. It's reasonably peppy, but not a road rocket. Overall, I've been very satisfied with this car and may well buy another Avalon someday.
After 165000
I purchased the vehicle used at 60k miles. After driving it for another 100k miles, I have not had any repairs to make. Many opportunities at routine maintenance (oil, brake pads, tires, timing...). The interior has held up and does not rattle and nor has begun to deteriorate as my previous Buick Le Sabre did at 80k miles (could stand driving it any longer). The words I would used to describe this vehicle is reliable and competent. It does not stand out in any automotive driving category, but simply does all well. The vehicle will also hold three full size car seats in the rear.
