Travel cruiser and student mover
While ok for driving around town, the Armada was fantastic as a long distance cruiser, as a tow vehicle for our boat, and as a moving truck for our college students. You don’t buy this car for gas mileage or sporty driving. It’s a hauler for people and stuff. The car held up great since we bought it. The paint still looks fantastic and the interior is still in great shape. All the electronics are still working. We had a normal amount of maintenance beyond the warranty period - nothing outrageously expensive.

Nice, powerful, and big.
This vehicle is Nissan's equivalent of a Chevy Suburban. It's just about as big of an SUV as you can get. The engine has plenty of power, giving it a rated towing capacity of 9,000 pounds. The vehicle feels surefooted and responsive, but I can definitely tell it's built on a truck chassis and the ride is a bit bumpy. Ours is the base model and doesn't have some of the amenities we've found in the higher trim levels, but is still quite nice. One thing that immediately struck me was that the windows are disproportionately large, which gives very good sight lines. For the interior, the seats are a rather rough cloth, so I don't think I would want to sit on them for an extended period while wearing shorts. There is plenty of room for my 6' 4" frame. The vehicle is tall enough that it's rather high for even me to get in, which may lead to some premature wear on the edge of the front seats as I slide in and out, but my 5'4" wife can easily get in thanks to the running boards and well placed handholds. The third row seats are powered and there are flaps that cover the gap between them and the second row seats to provide a reasonably flat surface for cargo. There are plenty of power points throughout the vehicle. For storage compartments, there is an overhead storage assembly running from the windshield to the second row seats with half a dozen or so compartments suitable for sunglasses, books, and such. On upgraded trim models there is a DVD player, the headphones for which store in one of the overhead compartments. The center console is quite large and deep, and there is a large open storage area directly ahead. One issue is that, because of the sheer size of the vehicle, some of the HVAC and radio controls as well as the front cup holder are at the extreme end of my reach without shifting in my seat. This may prove a problem for people with shorter arms, but probably can't be helped given the size of the vehicle. There is plenty of storage for the back seats. There is sub floor storage in the cargo area, but it is not very deep. I can't fit the 5 pound fire extinguisher I keep in the car in it, but it should be good enough for jumper cables, road flares, and the like. The HVAC system, at least on heat, is fairly anemic and is difficult to balance. This might be an issue for people in colder climates. It does have rear heat, which helps. The vehicle feels solid and has plenty of power. 70 MPH on the interstate feels like it's just loping along and not even trying. Even so, it has been getting 16 MPG in mostly highway driving. This vehicle, like all trim levels, has a 9,000 pound towing capacity and is set up with a 7 round light connector and class 3 Reese type hitch already installed. It should not be terribly difficult to install an electronic brake controller, and I don't forsee any problems towing our 28' camper. The vehicle cannot be dinghy towed behind a motorhome. Snow plow packages are available for the vehicle. It uses load range E tires, which help with handling but are more expensive and make the ride rougher, although this is probably necessary due to the towing capacity. The vehicle looks like it is designed for easy maintenance and repair. The vehicle is pretty maneuverable for its size and a backup camera helps with close quarters maneuvering. It does take up just about every bit of a standard parking spot, so it may be necessary to choose a spot wisely so your doors don't get blocked by neighboring cars. Overall, I definitely like this vehicle. It was purchased to be a heavy hauler, a backup to our daily driver vehicles, and to carry my family of four and all our luggage on vacation, and I think it will fill that role nicely. Overall, I'm highly satisfied.

Underrated but FANTASTIC vehicle.
We bought our 2013 Armada Platinum in February of 2019. At that point, six years old and with 54k miles on the odometer. It had a clean history and services performed on or ahead of schedule at the time we purchased. Since taking ownership, we’ve done a transmission service at 60k and 90k miles, a differential service at 80k miles, and full synthetic oil changes every 5k miles along with routine brake and coolant flush services. Beyond the normal maintenance, the only issues we’ve encountered in our four years and 51k miles of ownership were replacing the starter at 81k miles and the A/C compressor and condenser (condenser wasn’t bad but it’s generally frowned upon to not do both when one goes bad) at 95k miles. Keep in mind that while that mileage was relatively low, the vehicle was eight and ten years old at the point of each service, respectively. We purchased a 48-month extended warranty when we bought the vehicle and it has paid for itself and then some replacing these two items. It has plenty of room for our three kids, aged 15, 11, and 7. We have the 2nd row captain’s chairs, factory headrest DVD system, power folding 3rd row, and power rear vented windows (REALLY useful when a kid “cuts one” in the car…..y’all know it happens) and everything still works flawlessly. No issues with the electrical system, engine, or transmission. For the one reviewer here who said they had to replace the transmission, I’d like to know what their service history was. I’ve spoken with many owners of these vehicles and Titans (which is the Armada’s truck counterpart) and the transmission has never come up as a weak point. It actually shares the same transmission with the 370Z (though with different gearing appropriate for its intended uses, like towing) which is overbuilt to handle the Z’s rear wheel power output. It rides like a truck because it IS a truck. It’s a true, body-on-frame SUV, not a unibody crossover. Still, it’s very pleasant to drive, easy to maneuver, and very comfortable on long trips. My 15-year-old son has even commented on how much more stable it feels to him than other large vehicles he’s driven. Just know that tires matter. We use Michelin Defenders and they’re awesome on this vehicle. The power, smooth highway ride, towing capability, and comfort for a larger family which can all be had at a fraction of the cost of its competitors make this a true hidden gem. Research and review the history if you plan to buy one but just know that if you find a good one, it will service you incredibly well if you simply take care of it. You cannot beat it if you want a full-sized SUV with great reliability and minimal unscheduled maintenance needs. We’re still loving our Armada and I suspect we will hang onto it for a long time to come and see just how much mileage we can get out of it over the next ten years or longer. And for the record, I’ve owned 28 cars in the last 26 years, with a variety of makes and models represented in the collection. I don’t hang onto many of them for too long. This one will be tough to let go of anytime soon, even for me. That’s saying something.

I am 3 years and 50,000 miles in on my first Nissan. I apparently get better gas mileage than most - 18 mpg average - which is bad, but not so bad for the size and power this vehicle affords. Converts from school bus duty to cargo van duty in seconds with ease. It has a very strong, quiet engine and many thoughtful creature features. The interior still looks new even after trucking my kids. The one disappointment I have is the paint seems a little thin. Mine is Midnight Garnet, which is a beautiful color, but it scratches easily. The fact that it is so dark makes scratches more noticeable. I anticipated a utility vehicle designed for family use would have a tougher finish. Otherwise our relationship is a happy one.
