We bought the Sprinter 3500 brand new in 2016 with LTV RV Serentity motorhome. On our first extended vacation we have had 2 breakdowns. We travelled from Florida to Colorado for the first half of the trip and the engine blew an oil seal in Montrose, Colorado going up a long grade. Oil covered the engine and body of the vehicle. This was repaired, although oil continued to leak for several more days (residual on vehicle body). Three weeks later, the engine lost power and would only run at 10 to 15 MPH on I 90 heading toward Butte, Montana. We almost lost our lives when this happened. We were able to drive it into Missoula, Montana to the dealership. The next day, service said there was a wiring harness problem and they ordered new parts overnight, but don't expect to have the vehicle repaired for 2 days. We called Mercedes customer care for assistance with trip interruption expenses. We were told that the Sprinter line of vehicles is specifically excluded from their concierge customer care program. So here we are...on vacation, stranded in Missoula and unable to continue to Glacier National Park.. our dream destination and we are stuck with unplanned expenses and non reimbursable reservations. We know that all vacations have to come to an end, but never would I have guessed that Mercedes would be the cause of that. It is really so sad that a once great vehicle manufacturer could become so bad and that they could care less about you as a customer.

Vehicle has been in to Schumacher Mercedes in Scottsdale more than 6 times since it hit 20k miles. ESP Failure. Excessive play on the Steering. Gears Slamming into wrong gear. This van is literally killing my business with how unreliable it has become. I bought the van Brand New and since it hit 20k miles it has been in 6+ times for the same repairs. Can anyone say LEMON? I am currently waiting patiently for a Mercedes Benz USA Buy back - getting ready to hand this over to a lawyer to handle while MB USA drags their feet slowly. This Van is the most expensive work van I have ever owned and it's been a HUGE disappointment. Steering column has been replaced with multiple electronic modules and most of the time I'm limping around to my jobs in limp mode with the check engine light on. Go in for warranty repair and a week later the Check Engine and ESP Failure lights are back on. I HATE THIS VAN - it's GARBAGE!!! Buyer Beware. Still struggling with Check Engine Light every 1,000 miles. Vehicle goes back in to dealer this next week for fix number 15 CHECK ENGINE light.

I have the 4x4, 3 liter engine, 144 base, low roof passenger van. We use it for vacations only. At 26,000 miles the average mpg is 19.3. The van is a little noisier than an SUV but nothing unexpected for a commercial 12 seat vehicle. It runs perfectly with only routine maintenance, the air filter and oil change at 20,000 miles. It is not cheap, dealer charges 350$, but without voiding the factory warranty, you can buy the oil change kit from the dealer for 117$ and do it yourself in 15 minutes as everything is easily accessible. The van is much more stable than it looks but you can feel the lateral wind stronger than in an SUV. The engine is powerful, a lot of torque even at 80 miles per hour. On cruise control it runs uphill on highway keeping maximum speed without changing gears or increasing the engine rpm. In this aspect it is better than all our other vehicles (Toyota Highlander, Honda CRV and BMW 525 xi). I would trade some of that extra power for a little better mpg at high speed as we drive it day or night, summer or winter, camping in isolated areas where autonomy is of concern. The mpg variates greatly with speed, at 60 miles/hour mpg is 22 or better, at 80 miles/hour mpg 17.4. It is fun and easy to drive having the huge windshield and the very high driving position. I sometimes use it even in the city as my commuting vehicle. The 4x4 mode is very capable but a little tricky, in order to connect it you have to be on horizontal ground, stationary or moving at less than 3-4 miles per hour. it only takes 2 seconds to switch but you have to do it before you start climbing. if you did not anticipate correctly the difficulty of the road ahead and you are already driving uphill, you can not switch to 4x4 unless you find a flat portion. Note: 4x4 can be engaged in rear gear as well, so problem solved. The sales person advised me to use only diesel #2 fuel in order to avoid future NOX sensor problems and sometimes drive it at higher speed to allow sensor auto-cleaning. the genuine Mercedes DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) is 12$ for a half gallon bottle that lasts approx. 2000 miles. In my recent vacation in Europe I saw several Sprinters used as shuttle buses in suburban areas, running well at over 600,000 miles (1 million kilometers). With correct maintenance I hope ours will last the same :-) Update: at 48,000 miles the average mpg is 18.8, still running great with only routine maintenance. parts are not expensive but labor is. if you want to avoid paying for repairs, pay attention to the fuel you use: ultra low sulfur, biodiesel max 5%, (I saw chevron and shell gas stations selling 20% biodiesel, which is not recommended by the manufacturer). Update: at 72,000 miles it runs fine, no repairs, only engine oil and filter(117USD and 2.5 gal of DEF 45USD at the dealer, fuel filter(85USD and 70USD labor at a local shop. easy to do it yourself after watching video on Youtube). Average mpg at 72,000 miles= 18.8 (a little disappointing, worse than similar size Ford, Dodge and Chevy diesel engines). The 2.1 liter engine is much more efficient but it does not come paired with 4x4. Update Feb 2021 at 87,000 miles. Runs as new, purchased a Scan Gauge II which shows several parameters, including particulate filter load. Filter at 16% full after regeneration process so no cleaning needed soon. MPG increased to an average of 19 with Michelin all season tires. Very happy with the vehicle. USEFUL NOTE: 4x4 mode can be engaged in reverse as well if you started going uphill on rear wheel drive and found that you do not have enough traction.Update: at 107,000 miles no problems, runs as new. It shows an average of 18.8mpg. Update August 4, 2023 running well at 141,000miles, no problems at all, regular maintenance only (engine oil, transmission fluid, filters, serpentine belt, brake pads)

We were comparing the Sprinter with the Transit Van. Both vehicles offer much for the money. We read that if you stay below 65 mph, your mpg would be fine. We purchased our Sprinter from Nelli, she is great, at MB Laguna Niguel. We checked highway mpg at 60 mph from Laguna Niguel to Oceanside, CA and averaged 29.8 mpg...gotta love that. The Transit diesel on an 18 mile loop averaged 23 mpg. The Transit passenger van includes rear hvac and can be ordered for around $900.00 for other style vans. The Sprinter rear hvac is $3600.00. We purchased a crew van and will put a Dometic 15,000 btu Brisk II heat pump on the roof and carry a portable generator for when we may need it. Also installing two MaxxAir vents to help circulate air while driving. Front air conditioning in Sprinter is more than adequate for first two rows of people. When we finish we will have a very nice mobile office/travel van. Regarding sleeping in the van or camping out, my wife has told me she is happy to continue camping out at the Hilton. The Sprinter will make our travels much more comfortable and allow us to take our dog with us. Will be able to sleep in Sprinter if in pinch. Update 4.3.17. We installed a 4.0 Onan gasoline generator and fuel tank underneath behind the driver. The installation was done by Richard's Performance Muffler (RPM) in Oceanside. It is the cleanest installation of a generator I have ever seen. WOW!!! More expensive than the portable concept, but much, much more functional. Our Sprinter continues to maintain excellent fuel mileage. We went to Las Vegas for a trial run. We were trying to beat traffic going over and averaged 21.6 mpg. However, returning we took our time and even with the hills, etc, we averaged 26.4 mpg. To end the bumps and sways, we followed the advice of many on Sprinter Forum and installed Koni struts and shocks. Further, we upgraded to 1.25" Hellwig anti-sway bar. Again installation was by RPM. The bumps and swaying is gone. Mike Lewis at North County Mobile Electronics in Oceanside acted as our general contractor while putting this van together. He oversaw and installed much of the inside of the van. Outstanding job! The LLM is everything and more than we hoped it would be. Excellent mobile office, superior travel van. Update on 4.3.18...Our Sprinter now has @28,000 miles. We have used it for trips and as a mobile office. We are very pleased with our Sprinter. Updated on 4.4.20...Our Sprinter now has @65,000 miles. Besides being a mobile office, we have road tripped to the East Coast a couple more times. Our Australian Shepherd and our two Balinese cats travel well in the van. We are comfortable. The van continues to achieve outstanding fuel mileage. If purchasing a new Sprinter not certain I would consider a gas engine. The diesel costs more, but it will outlast the gas engine. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we enjoy ours. 4.6.22 Update. 85,xxx miles. Been thru Merceds version of dieselgate. Our overall mpg has been affected we lost as much as perhaps 10%. We can still achieve 21mpg on road-trips. We are considering some upgrades to the inside to make it more functional for our current uses. We wanttobe able to carry two e-bikes inside. We are considering flarespace to provide the room for our vehicle. We are also considering adding power to sliding door. We continue to enjoy our Sprinter. 4.10.24. We continue to enjoy our Sprinter for all the room we have while traveling much more comfortably. Our van has served us well acting as a personal moving van for our children as they attended college and moved to their place(s) of employment. This has continued to be a good choice for us. 10.14.24 Our Sprinter continues to serve us well. We are seriously thinking about transitioning to Lithium battery system, probably EcoFlow. We have had some trouble with the Onan Generator with an inverter/charger system. We traveled cross-country again this summer to help our family with some moves, etc. The Sprinter did all we asked of it. If I were starting over, I would not go the generator, inverter route. I would use an EcoFlow system with a method to keep it charged. Happy Trails, Ron

I purchased the van for private use and will convert it for use as a camper. It's a great vehicle overall... Love the mileage (29mpg on the freeway) and it's really easy to get it around town especially for a big vehicle.

The owner's manual says to read it BEFORE driving your new van(the sales folks won't tell you that) .It'd take you a couple days to do that.This is one complex machine & the poorly written manual only makes it worse.Had I read it 1st I wouldn't have bought this van. I get 24.4 mpg ,have only 800 miles on it so far and have driven it only in snowy,mountainous country.It is so complex I don't like to drive it.Am a retired(for 20 years) fireman with a lot of diesel fire truck experience but this MB diesel is a different animal. I did put nokian snow tires on it & they work well.Mine is a 2 wheel drive.I have a 2000 GMC all wheel drive van that I will never,ever get rid of,it's reliable & SIMPLE.

If you are looking for a full sized van you should really consider the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. I've had this van for almost a year and I have almost 20,000 miles on it. I like to drive it mostly on regional road trips but I've been to PA and back from NV. The gas mileage is decent for such a large vehicle. I've gotten as high as 25 mpg on longer road trips but usually average about 22 mpg. Don't be intimidated by the Sprinter's size. My wife almost started to cry when she saw how big it was. It has the same top-down footprint as a full size truck. It's just way taller. And easier to maneuver (I think). It holds just about anything inside. Because it has 12 seats the payload is 2900 pounds. That's more than some full sized trucks. The Sprinter has decent acceleration (I have the 4 cylinder engine) off the line but lags a little accelerating from 60-80 mph (don't judge, there are highways out west that have 80 mph speed limits). Mercedes governs the Sprinter's top speed at 82 mph. I've heard 85 but I can't go faster than 82. This is a good thing. It drives and handles like a truck and the fanciest thing about it is the logo on the grill. The A/C is decent and the entertainment system will suffice. Overall, it's a well built vehicle that can haul just about anything you can fit inside it.

Aibag red light is on all the time, the sliding door has a plastic chain to Carry the electrical wire. the chain is crack and the electric wire is destroyed. the door doesn't closes properly. the second shift is getting stocked when you drive slow/cold. getting in to high rpm for 3rd shift. 4 months old van with 10.000 miles. Airbad issue repsired by dealer and also sliding door chain. 2 ND shift is still an issue. It's been reported and I'm paying extended warranty.

This Van was a very expensive mistake, bought brand new and has been in to Schumacher Mercedes Benz in Scottsdale 26 Times with the check engine light. Limp Mode has become almost part of my daily commute. The steering column has been replaced twice. Accelerator Drive by wire pedal has been replaced 3 times. The BluDef system has been completely replaced 5 times. Mercedes needs to look long and hard at this turd design. $55,000 Work Van that needs to go ASAP. I hate this thing!

I have had to replace all 4 wheel speed sensors and the transmission/torque converter on my 2016 Sprinter. It was slightly over the 36 month warranty period and was under 36,000 miles when the transmission failed. I have requested Mercedes to compensate me for the transmission replacement, with no success so far. The oil changes at the dealer are quite expensive.

Had a 2016 Sprinter 2500. Purchased new, constantly in the shop for repairs. NOx sensor failure 5 times. Speed sensor failure 4 times. Was in the shop for 40 days during the first 6 months of ownership. Many other repairs were required. Buyer beware, don’t just walk away, run [html removed]

Roof top air has had to be fixed 3 times in the last 2 years. Motor fan inside replaced. Def fluid hose went bad. Clutch fan needed replaced. No gauges for the def fluid until you are low. And no way to measure it so you just guess. Lacks power up hills. Burns through headlights every 6 months and I don’t do much driving at night.
