Comfortable long distance runner
I bought this vehicle in December 2018 with 53K miles from a dealer in Phoenix. Originally, it was sold in San Diego and later re-registered in Arizona. The best part, NO RUST! Obviously, the warranty had run out by the time I got it. I was looking for GLK's in the Lincoln/Omaha area, but only found 5 or 8 models for sale. I lived in Phoenix for 20 years and was not too surprised to find 65 models for sale there. 6 were GLK 250's with the 2.1 liter Diesel engine (OM651). I had long been looking to buy a Diesel vehicle. Contacted the dealer and bought the GLK sight unseen and had it shipped to Nebraska. When I finally saw the car, I was quite pleased. Interior and exterior were flawless and it ran beautifully. About six months later, I took it to the dealer in Lincoln for service and a thorough checkup. They gave me a good report on everything and the service cost me about $400. That included a loaner (2019 GLA 250, with about 3000 miles). The oil they are using is Mobil 1 and the OM651 engine requires 5.5 quarts. The biggest problem I had was when the check engine light activated. Visit to the dealer showed a problem with the AddBlue (DEF) tank. That tank seems to have a number of problems in all models with Diesel engines. You can find many entries on the web. The tank is designed to last for the 10K miles service interval. Anyway, that "little" problem ended up costing me $2000, including removing and reattaching the tow bar. I am now adding DEF to the tank to keep it as full as possible to keep the heating element submerged and prevent corrosion. DEF is water based and that is a problem when temps go below freezing. Dealer had to order parts and I had a new (1000 miles) GLC 300 loaner for a week. For the service in 2023, at 96K miles I had the dealership check the brakes. Brakes were still original and had accumulated some corrosion and needed to be fixed. Mercedes will replace the rotors on a brake job. That bill was $1900, with a brake special discount of $250 ($125 per axel) and also including the regular 10K miles service. Took the car in on Thursday and had a loaner over the weekend until Tuesday. I now have almost 103K miles on the GLK 250 and it probably needs some cooling and heating service, flushing radiator, replacing hoses. Haven't had any problems with A/C and heating and I'd like to keep it that way. So, it's certainly not cheap, but considering that I had a service and tuneup done on a Chevy pickup and was charged $1100 by the dealership, is it really that more expensive to have a Mercedes? The DEF tank problem is due to stupid regulations regarding Diesel engines in CA specifically and the rest of the USA in general. My brother, in Europe, has a 2014 E 250 with the same engine/4matic combination and NO DEF tank. Only trucks use DEF/AddBlue there, not cars. The tires originally installed on the car were Pirelli Scorpion Verde. I always thought, they were a bit noisy. Also for 60K mile tires, they don't last even half the distance. I bought Michelin CrossClimate2 tires 11 months ago and they are running a lot quieter than the Pirelli's. Interior with the MBTex still looks like when I got it and so does the outside, despite the summer bugs all over the front. I keep washing it. Mileage from fill-up to fill-up is between 32 and 34 mpg. One trip I actually managed 38 mpg, with a 10 - 15 mile tailwind. In winter driving into the wind, the mileage drops to maybe 30 mpg. Overall, I love this car and the way it drives and handles, especially with the Michelin tires. If I had to replace it, the GLC 300 would be on top of the list. Although, I would like to be able to get a GLC 220d, but I'd have to move to Europe to get that.
