this one is a keeper
Before I bought my beloved w210, I was looking at the 740i Sport Bimmer and D2 Audi S8. If you are also looking at these, stop now. There is no comparison. The W210 is the most capable, dependable and FUN car of them all. I have owned mine for 6 months now and can honestly say it is the best car I have owned. It is very comfortable (although the Audi seats have the edge), clearly built for cruising an autobahn at 100mph all day long. This thing just chews up the miles effortlessly. I get between 17-21mpg in mixed city/moderate highway commute. Not too bad considering the Saturn 5 rocket performance that lurks beneath.
Amazing
I have owned Volkswagens, Porsche, BMW, and a 2011 CTS-V Coupe. I stumbled across this 2002 E55 AMG by accident and drove it for the heck of it. Although it needed tires, shocks, and rim reconditioning, I was impressed by the performance, looks, and (now) the ride. This is by a long shot the best built, fun to drive, fastest accelerating car I have ever owned. I constantly confuse so many people by the sleeper look of this car as I leave them far far behind me. I bought this car 10 years old and it is in better condition still than the 2011 CTS-V I bought last year (Which was sold). I cant imagine driving anything but an AMG EVER AGAIN.

One of the Best Cars
Truly amazing to drive and power is unbelievable. Reliability is simply amazing. I was very pleased to own it and would never want to sell it. It has everything from spacious interior to brutal power to smooth gearing to executive and humble looks. I don't think there would be a better car with so many features in this price and Yes, reliability is a dream come true.
Newbie owner review
I have only had this car for a week now but I love it so far. It has amazing power and is really comfortable and classy. I am the third owner and it seems to have been pretty reliable for the other owners, although I don't have all the maintenance records. The only "problems" thus far are the left side of the digital display in the dash is dim and I've had the lamp malfunction warning come on once.
Black Beauty at it's finest
We are the 2nd owner and it was like brand new with only 36k miles on it. It's a 1999 AMG E55 and so comfy. We have not had to do hardly any maintenance to it. It still drives like a new car and i have 140k miles on it now. We love everything about it.

More fun than my classic car
Got this after selling my classic car which was a occasional driver and got lots of thumbs up . But this car has it all I loved the body style and the power is equal or better than my Big Block classic with all the creature comforts and almost 3 time's the gas milage . The only problem is this car is so much fun to drive I let the others sit in the garage,
Best 4 door Sedan Ever!!!!!!
Pay attention to key maintenance issues found on the internet: Transmission flushed history (the fluid IS NOT LIFETIME), crank and Cam sensors, Mass Airflow Sensor, and plugs and O2 sensors. These are actually easy to DIY if you are experienced in wrenching cars. Just have patience. An awesome fact about these is that it has a non-aspirated engine and the suspension is "öld School": no air, oleo, or electric suspension that costs $$$$$$ when they break down. They do eat front tires if you drive them to their potential. I've had many long, 1000+ mile trips in mine with absolute comfort and "performance" when needed..:) First a disclosure...I owned over 8 BMW's before I got the E55. Love the BMW's for their sharp suspension and looks. Still my favorite brand. But as I got smarter (e.g., Older), I needed more comfort in the front and room in the rear seat (especially for the Gkids' child seats). I was very lucky to get my 2000 E55. This is the last of the true AMG's from Affalterbach before MB turned AMG into a brand, not a car built by performance-minded super engineers. So if you want a classic with muscle car + performance (mine has close to 400 ft/lbs of torque... minor chip mod...:)) and stealth looks with superb German engineering, this is your car!

If you own a pilot's license...
This car is very rare and its fast! It explodes past 90% of all other cars made, including many high performance sports cars. I think the BMW M5 is a fine vehicle, but if you want a reasonably priced alternative jet powered sedan...the E55 AMG is the only alternative. The Japanese only wish they could make anything comparible to this German autobahn jet plane on four wheels. If you want to operate this vehicle, be sure to have your pilot's license in order.
wolf is sheep's clothing
Fantastic car choice for the corporate exec. Very understated (people say things like "Is that new? It just looks different." -- The 275-40/18's are a hint something sinister is at play). Muscle car acceleration, porsche handling, and the space to take the family of four to the grocery store! I have left more than a few guys driving Vettes, Boxsters, and Mustang GT's perplexed, trying to figure out how the guy driving the "old man" Mercedes dusted them. 20MPG driving to the office to boot! No real complaints. The performance suspension will rattle your kidneys going over bumps.
Wolf in sheep's clothing; yeah baby!
I love this car! More than enough performance for American roads. This is a performance car that doesn't punish you. Wonderful steady acceleration, fantastic brakes, comfortable at ANY speed. The transmission is very smooth and adapts surprisingly well to all conditions I've encountered. Rather exclusive, not many of these on the road. Once in your life, you need to own a car like this.
E-55 AMG sedan
Overall this is an exceptional car. It excels in character and performance and never fails to impress me with its civilized behaivor. Whenever I get into my other cars I wonder where the power is.
Had to get another W210 AMG
I just got back to the states after 5 years in Germany. I bought a 1998 E50 AMG while there (Same car). I loved it! But it had to be sold before leaving. As soon as I got back to the states I loved my E50 sooooo much I started hunting for a 1999 E55. Power, Style, Luxury, Comfort, Safety, reliability, this car has it all. I will probably keep it forever.
Wonderful Car
This has truly been a wonderful car. It has all the practical needs one would want and also a tremendous "fun" factor when you need it. This is a very fast car and will keep up with almost any car on the road. Good reliability so far, but I bought it used and it did have some warranty work. It has been 100% reliable thus far.
With prices coming down
With prices comming in below 15K for a used 99 model, this may be the best all around sedan for the money. Consistant 20-22MPG freeway. Runs a low 13 in the quater mile stock. Keeps up with most of the performance cars of today, while carring five people in comfort. Although parts are expensive, it is well worth it for a car whose style is as timeless as a Van Gogh.
Amazing Machine
After 3 years and 35,000 miles, it's still a thrill to drive this car. Smooth, powerful acceleration. Unbelievable handling. Spacious and comfortable back seat a rare bonus in a performance car. Expensive to buy, but has been a joy to own. In the shop just ONE time for an oil change and new tires. Hope to own this baby a long time.
e55
This car is the best car I have ever owned. It is the perfect combination of performance, style and comfort. It has huge amounts of torque at all rpms. Very fun to drive.
I love this car!!!!
Wow, did I ever fall into the best car I've ever owned. My wife wanted a Mercedes (we've had 3 previously), and I happened across this one and an E430. I bought the E55 AMG, and man am I pleased. It's like a combination of a Porsche and a Mercedes. Fantastically comfortable family car when the mother in law is in town. But, when I'm feelin' frisky, Katie bar the door. And the best part, the police aren't drawn to it like moths to a porch light. Plus, this car has 70,000+ miles on it, and its as solid as a rock. 20+ mpg is nice also. And to think, I got rid of my Ford Expedition in order to get this car. What a major quality of life bonus!
Great Benz
The E55 ... stump pulling power in an elegant machine. Subtle, sophisticated and faster than most sports cars, the car is a joy to drive and announces that you have arrived.
Mercedes Benz E55 AMG W210
It is an extremely fast car. It has a great hand built engine but could be expensive to repair if something goes wrong. It cannot be thrashed very hard since the possibility of something going wrong increases significantly. It is extremely fast from 0-60 in 5.3 secs. One of the fastest cars I have driven but the ride is not comfortable. Build quality is good but not the best I have seen.
