2021 Mazda CX-9 has all the room and luxury
If you are looking for a lot of room, but not really looking for a vehicle to go 4 wheeling and towing a boat with, then the CX-9 is the car for you. We have had the car for a month now and talked to several previous owners of the CX-9 and they all recommend this car. We love all the options and the room. We opted for the Grand Touring, not the Signature because we didn't want the console between the captains chairs in the 2nd row. We prefer the walk through. But we didn't lose any other options except for the Napa Leather....which is nice but the regular leather is nice as well. For that reason we couldn't see spending an extra 5K on the Signature version.

Great car and a great value
The CX9 is luxurious and fun to drive. We have the CX5 as well. The power from the 2.5 turbo is great. We live in the mountains and the torque is plentiful. Not as big as some of the competition, but makes up for it in nimble handling.

Love My CX9
I traded my 2019 Lincoln Nautilus Reserve in on a 2021 Mazda CX 9 Carbon Edition. I thought I would miss my V6 twin turbo but I do not. My Mazda is fun and easy to drive, has a lot of features, the color in the Carbon Edition is great with the red leather, and overall I am completely impressed with this vehicle while also saving $20k compared to my Nautilus. The storage in most 3 row SUV’s in this class is smaller. I think it’s fine.

The 3 row SUV for the driving enthusiast
After moving back to the city, it was apparent that my 20 Toyota Tundra Platinum was no longer in it's element. I moved into a house with a small garage and could barely fit the truck in the garage, and driving in the city was cumbersome. It was a difficult decision to let this fine truck go, but now I own a 21 CX-9 GT in soul red. Initially I wanted a Signature, but decided that the 2nd row bench seats was going to more useful than the captain chairs. The Mazda is such a joy to drive. It feels much smaller on the road than any other 3 row. The driver inputs are met with precision. The powertrain is smooth and well calibrated. The 2.5L turbo with its 300+ft of torque gives a nice shove at low rpms. This engine is not a screamer, very seldom will you need more than 4k rpms. Because of this, the engine never feels taxed. The transmission shifts quickly and is always ready to downshift. The paddle shifters are very useful for saving the brakes on mountain drives. The brakes are powerful and direct. The cornering limits are very high with very little body roll. The driving position is perfect and the seats are very supportive. The heated and ventilated function work well for keeping my back comfortable. I love the infotainment setup. The scroll wheel takes about 5 minutes to figure out and is much better than the distracting push button screens found in most of the competition. The Bose stereo is very impressive, it has a very clean sound. The HUD is easier to read and keeps my eyes on the road. Another feature that I love is the front camera and 360 degree camera. A big plus for getting my car in my small garage. With all the positives of the CX-9, the only weakness would be the lack of cargo/people space. I rarely have more than two passengers in my car but it is nice to have the third row for occasional use. And honestly if you need something to haul 6 or more passengers, a minivan would be a better choice than any 3 row crossover. If you enjoy driving and need something a little larger than a 5 passenger crossover, I would highly recommend an extended test drive of a CX-9. It will put a big smile on your face.

Fantastic Choice
I knew the CX-9 was a good suv but I didn't it to be a GREAT suv! Styling is superb, engine is very smooth and torquey. The materials on the inside of the driver cabin is on par with brands costing thousands of dollars more.....I traded in my 2016 C300 and never looked back. Really didn't need the 3rd row for it just my wife and I so we fold it down when we need extra cargo space. I would recommend this vehicle for anyone looking to not look like the others
Can't Beat the Value
Been looking at a lot of SUV's to replace my wife's 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE. By far the Mazda is the most luxurious option for the price. Went with the Grand Touring for all the features plus wanted a second row bench seat. Rarely use third row but need the cargo space. I drive a BMW X3 and I have to say this car is loaded for the price with the same quality, fit and finish. To get all the features in a BMW you would pay another $10-15k. Considered another Highlander, Santa Fe did not look at Palisade. After seeing it and driving it there was no comparison - it's that good. Time will tell if it is as reliable as the Highlander was for us buy Mazda rates high on all the quality surveys. Recommend you add this to your list!

Get the extra's - it's so nice to have heated/cooled seats and the extra features that come with a Grand Touring model are so worth it!

Navigation, heads up display and electronic issues
Took my 2021 CX-9 Grand Touring into Mazda 3 weeks ago for the entire computer/electronic systems not working. No radio, no navigation, no heads up display, the charging ports were not working, no clock, etc. They had NO fix for it and said that Mazda is aware of the problem and working on it. This was 3 weeks ago and still no fix and no one is returning my calls. I only had the car for 9 weeks when all this happened. Not happy and Mazda is not offering any help, answers or doing anything to make this right. UPDATE: Mazda says they finally have a fix for the computer system. It needs an update and they say all the 2021 Mazda CX-9's will need this update. They have taken care of the issue. Will let you know how the update/fix works after a few thousand miles.

Love This Car!!
Love driving this car and all the bells and whistles it has! I had a Mazda CX-5 before this and it is one of my favorite owned vehicles.
Great vehicle with a terrible flaw
Purchased a 2021 CX9 Signature, Soul Red Paint, Parchment Napa Leather. Vehicle had a good build quality and looked really good. Also drove very nice, but the safety features were useless, blind spot and lane departure warning were not accurate, the collision mitigation or brake assist rarely worked. The 360 camera quality was amazing. But all those perks are overshadowed by the terrible flaw which is the Turbo Engine problem burning oil. Every 3500-4000 miles the vehicle would run out of oil, Mazda is aware of the problem and their solution is to top off the oil. They are currently being sued for refusing to repair the valve stem defect in their engines, they are probably topping off the engine with oil until the vehicle warranty runs out so the customer is liable to pay out of pocket. Hopefully they lose the lawsuit and are forced to repair their fault engines. Will never buy another Mazda, a shame since the car looked good and rode well.

Great driving dynamics with unreal suspension
I just bought a 2021 Mazda CX9 signature series so this is just my opinion having driven many cars over the years last 37 years, from American cars to foreign cars I’m strictly at a Japanese guy’cause of their Reliability so I’m biased here. I own a 2016 Mazda CX5 bought used. I prefer the Mazda strictly because their suspension and their ride quality and having owned Toyotas and Hondas for most of my life I purchased the 2016 Mazda CX5 with 43,000 miles on it over the last 4 years and put over 97k miles on it and has been repair free minus maintenance. I usually purchase based out of three facts for vehicles. The first one is the suspension and ride quality of the vehicle the second one is the amenities inside and out the third one is what the vehicle looks like. In my opinion the 2021 Mazda CX9 signature has all the amenities I was looking for minus the panoramic roof which I would like to have seen in the vehicle so that is a letdown. The car comes with Soft Napa leather interior is great with stitching on the sides of the seats. The soft touch material inside and the aluminum and the wood trim not sure if it’s real or not makes the vehicle look quite nice. The biggest Fact of this vehicle is how Mazda can maintain such a nice sport ride without compromising what the car feesl like on pot holed ridden streets. The drive quality and the way it takes on rough city or rough town streets. I hate the way Hondas and Acura’s feel. I own an Acura RLX and on smooth roads, it drives really nice, but on pot holed USA streets, you can feel it in the cabin as well the car feels like it’s a tank. The Toyota is much nicer on the road, but the cheapness even on the platinum editions feels well, cheap. The second facet of the Mazda is how the seats feel and how nice the second row captain’s chairs are Which are also Napa leather with stitching. The seats feel like they hug and contour you. However this vehicle is really not for very large people as it could be kind of tight feeling inside that cabin. I’m 5,11 and 190lbs and have no issues, as I sit in the seat. I don’t have my body fat that goes over the seat so for me it’s comfortable and form fitting. However the seat is not that large to accommodate kind of heavy set folks. The last is the cars looks awesome and I think personally better than its biggest rival the Highlander. I came very close to buying the 2021 Hybrid Highlander, and when I found it was a 4cly and people complaining how uncomfortable the seats were, I said NO WAY. I owned a 2010 Highlander limited and that vehicles seats were just outright TOUGH TO SIT ON. If you have enough butt cushion than that would not have been an issue. As I as hardly any butt it was a difficult 10 years of ownership. I have the 2021 cx-9 soul red signature model and under the sun, the cars paint job looks like it comes from 100k car price point. Phenomenal.. I love this new car and would recommend it highly.

Fun SUV for enthusiastic drivers
I think it is time for me to give my review on my Cx9. I got the touring with the premium package and I think at this trim level it has all what you need. I’m not into all this new technology like lane keep assist or collision braking, etc. I like to drive my car. The only feature I found helpful is blind spot. I only had it for a year and I haven’t had a single problem which is expected from a new vehicle. Well, this is what I think about the Cx9, it’s a great SUV with great driving dynamics and going through curvy roads drives like a dream. Has a very nice torquee engine with enough HP. It has that zoom zoom from Mazda. In terms of reliability I can’t really comment on that since I only had the car for a year and only 12,000 miles on it. The 2.5 turbo engine is pretty new and there is not a long record to called it reliable. This is my 1st Mazda and I’m really happy with my purchase. I hope it last a long time that’s how good and fun this SUV is that you don’t want it to died. Interior is really luxurious and well built. Only thing about this SUV is not for someone who is 6’ or more In my case I’m only 5’6 so is perfect. Mazda is coming a long way and has made some great progressed since they separate from ford . I hope their cars are reliable in the long run and make costumer want to keep purchasing from Mazda. Their cars are fun to drive and I hope they don’t change that. Test drive one and make a decision and by the way the 4 stars is only because I don’t know how reliable this vehicle will be in the long run. I’ll keep updating in the future and I hope only to say positive things about This nice SUV. Update 12/21/2022 I traded in my Mazda CX9 after 18 months the car started burning too much oil. I know that turbo engines do that but this was too much. Oil change was done every 5k and after a month the oil looked black and level was low. The car only had 17k miles on it and I think having this kind of problem with such a new car is unacceptable. Mazda has a big issue with this engine and the non-turbo engine does not get exempt from this issue. This was my first Mazda and I’m disappointed and I just had a feeling this was not going to be a reliable car. Not even my 200k miles toyota Corolla burns oil like that and oil is always clean. Mazda should focus more on reliability rather than luxury. For me reliability comes first. Sadly all car companies are focusing more on technology and luxury rather than reliability. Toyota still makes some reliable cars but not all. So just do just research before making your decision.

CX-9 is the perfect fit.
The Mazda CX-9 offers a great mix of luxury, features and driving dynamics to make it the perfect fit for a family wanting to downsize but still needing 3 row flexibility on occasion. The CX-9 is a bit smaller than some of its closest competitors but makes up for lost space with excellent materials and fit and finish. You will be hard pressed to find another three row SUV that offers anything close to the CX-9’s driving experience and features without spending thousands more.

Mazda CX 9 Signature Review
I recently purchased a new Mazda CX9 Signature and must say I am disappointed that this is what Mazda considers there top of the line. I award it a minus 3 stars. Pros- Very attractive and well appointed car. Ample cargo storage. Appears to be well made and constructed. Drives and handles nicely. Cons- The car is not made for anyone over 5' 10' / 200 lbs. The cockpit is very tight and hard to get in and out of, as the door is narrow and the top of the door is very low. Limited storage in the center console and difficult to access when driving. Tailgate: I constantly bang my head on the tailgate and have it adjusted as high as it will go. Seats: Although the leather looks very nice, they are extremely uncomfortable. For me, they are very tight and short. On a recent trip back east, both our butts were very sore, due to the hardness of the seats and we felt more fatigued than normal. Seats comfort feels more like what I would expect from a Ford Escort, not good. The Entertainment / Nav. System is clumsy and not user friendly at all. For a car that is considered Mazda's top of the line, we were very surprised the side mirrors are not linked to the memory seats, they do not tilt when you put the car in reverse and the drivers seat does not have a power extender for taller drivers. Mazda has a way to go, to compete with Toyota, Subaru, Hyundai and others in these areas.
Better than I imagined it would be
I have a lot of faith in Toyota’s products but I must say this Mazda is a solid vehicle - reliable reliable reliable. That’s what matters most to me. Our 2016 CX9 has had zero problems, it’s a blast to drive (for what it is, a fwd crossover), gas efficient, and looks absolutely beautiful (again, for what it is!). Highly recommend

A must try , look an buy!
So here's the deal . We've owned our 2010 Mazda 3 for 11 years without one single problem . SO I needed a 3 row 4WD ... Ie. Colorado winters to drive the grand kids around . Looked at numerous models an not one lived up to the CX9 for comfort, looks , affordability an most of all driveability. We chose the touting with upgraded paint , captains chairs an 12 speaker Bose sound system . Am I happy...yes . Go drive this 4WD beauty an you will be too!

Don't understand everyone's love of Mazda
Like the title says, I really don't understand the love of this vehicle other than that it depreciates quickly so you can get a lot of features for less. Wish we could go back in time and pay the extra for a Highlander. The CX9 is large on the outside (over 199 inches and a Grand Highlander is only 201 inches), but interior is super cramped. We only have one kid, so thought we were okay when test driving but small interior has proved challenging on multiple occasions. Also, the car has a crazy weak HVAC system and the car never feels cool - just have a fan blasting at near high speed (super loud) trying to make you think you are cool. Also, the lack of vents in the third row is criminal since the AC can't even cool the first two rows adequately. We also have the infamous oil consumption and suspension rattle. While Mazda's are known for their zoom zoom, you acceleration is lack luster unless you floor it past the pedal click to get full acceleration, but with the oil consumption, don't want to drive it hard and cause the valve gasket seal to fail (unfortunately our vin doesn't quality for the TSB). Let's just say, I'm looking forward to unloading the car soon even though there will be a large depreciation hit.

Great driving car
I really don't know why more people don't buy this car. It has "zoom zoom zoom"! Engine has lots of torque and car handles really well. It is a great value compared to the competition.
The part just fell off
The drivers side plastic rear mud flap/tire well over assembly fell off on highway. I brought it to the dealer and he said it happens all the time. It’s a $189 part plus whatever labor will be. But the part is not available anywhere. Seems like Mazda should secure the piece with more than plastic. Car only has 15,000 miles. How many of these things am I going to have to buy over the life of the car?

The most reliable Range Rover is the CX9!
I bought the Kuro (carbon) edition here in Canada. Excellent vehicle. Zero issues in 18 months of care free driving. Handles excellent, sporty and practical. Very stylish. Rear third row is really for kids ((I never use it and it is always folded down). Reasonably priced when compared to the likes of Range Rover, BMW etc. The infotainment is a bit slow on turning on the car and can be a bit clunky but otherwise it’s fine. The black interior surfaces are dust magnets. Would definitely buy another Mazda. I was an Honda guy, but Mazda have surpassed them. Zoom, Zoom.

good so far....
We got our Mazda back in June of 2021, we loved all the features although we dont use them as much but any how i feel its time to write a review about how my suv has performed. We fell in love with our Suv because it was the only 4 cyl vehicle with a 3rd row, everyone else had a 6 cyl suv and well the kia sorrento was out of the question due to shortages and Covid. Anyhow, my suv has about 67k miles, yes we drive a lot, and so i tried to change the spark plugs and i guess the dealer does not have anything as of 4/ 21/23 and I have also noticed that the automatic folding mirrors began to fail, so now only one of them folds properly, on top of that I also noticed the burning of engine oil, yes we top it off but after another few thousand miles its back to low, and no there are no leaks because I have a pan under my suv, so I must have an extra container of engine oil. To be honest, it has been a great Suv but i think its time for something new and for the price we paid, about $55k, I am certain I can find something much better with a panoramic sunroof and more engine power for less money.
Luxury alternative - $20k less expensive
Traded in a 2018 lease of CX-9 Touring with Premium. The signature is so much nicer and the 360 camera, heated and cooled seats and overall quality and design compete with luxury models like Acura MDX, Lincoln, Volvo and yes even BMW, Audi and Mercedes (I've owned or leased most if not all of these brands - right now our other car is a Mercedes). The car itself is great but where Mazda fails is the dealer experience. The sales process is like a used car deal and the support falls short. When I picked up my car, it was missing a bumper black cap and a second key. 4 weeks later I'm still waiting. But to put $20k in my pocket, I'll put up with it. The car is well worth the price.
My Cx-9
Car is an excellent all around SUV , across the board it excels. I would recommend spending time with the car salesman getting a thorough understanding on how the infotainment system works.

Great Car w two Glaring Annoyances
The 2021 CX-9 Signature is a beautiful car. The red paint is incredible. The captains chairs, front and back, the wood trim, interior/exterior lighting are all high end. The new grille really stands out as well. It dampens road/engine noise very nicely. It’s other features carried over from previous years are still top-notch: iActive cruise control, lane departure, head’s up display, and more. The infotainment display has been enlarged with much improved resolution. A lot of aspects of the vehicle can be customized by the owner such as interior lighting, turn signals and headlights. The car is fun to drive. The new paddle shifters are fun, but I rarely use them. I find them awkward to use when turning - which isn’t an issue with one hand free to operate a shift lever. But that isn’t a complaint. Why does this review get three stars? Two reasons: 1) The infotainment is always on and it is annoying especially when starting the engine remotely after forgetting to turn the volume down (hitting mute before stoping the engine doesn’t work. It comes on unmuted next time you start the car). This is incredibly annoying. I don’t know why other reviewers don’t comment on this. So many features are customizable but you can’t turn off the radio (or at least let it stay muted until the owner chooses to unmute)? (Update: I’ve since discovered that it can be turned off in the “Source” menu. I’m glad to know this, but it takes several steps to navigate there. What ever happened to “On/Off” switches?) The outside rear view mirrors are not programed with the driver’s seat position. How does this continue to get past the designers? This is a Signature edition car? Related issue: If you start the car remotely and then unlock it using your fob to get in, the engine stops (OK) but the custom seat position is disabled.?? I’m sure this has something to do with the added level of security (engine shuts down when opening the door). I wonder if the same thing happens with a Lexus?

The vehicle is fantastic...except for the tires.
The reason for a 4 star is that all 4 tires are cupped at 34000 km (not miles) .and my vehicle was served by the dealer as per schedule Including wheel allinement and rotation. That is less than halve the km I expected. And my dealer said oh well that happens sometime.
Vroom
I love my new vehicle took a little getting used to since my old car was smaller but it's been smooth sailing and with all the features it feels great also love the back up camera

My second CX-9
I loved my first one, 2008 car of the year, but decided after 13 perfect years (53,000 miles) that I should learn the new technology so I essentially gave it away. It is still running today. Regarding my 2021, I have read that it's not good for tall people but it turns out that it isn't really good for very short people. I am 4'11" and seat is as high as possible but I feel it should be higher. I bought this car online during covid and therefore never saw interior. I requested light colored headliner and seats and assumed incorrectly that rest of interior would be light, like my tan interior in 2008. It turned out to be black, like so many other vehicles today. I really hate the black interior and may have decided against this car had I seen it. One other complaint is the heated seats never get as warm as domestic vehicle seats. The dealer lied and tried to tell me my car does not have "heated" seats, only "seat warmers." My vehicle sticker says heated. Other than these complaints, I still love my CX-9 and I was unhappy to hear Mazda will no longer manufacture the CX-9 model. I am hoping my 2021 will be as great overall as my 2008.
Amazing
Quality inside and out. Quiet on the road. Rides like a luxury suv, drives like a sports car. Even thought its only a 2.5 turbo, it has alot of torque and plenty of get up and go. Great safety features. If you never owned a Mazda, need to check one out.

Lots of features for less money than other brands
We purchased this car used with just over 26,000 miles on it. We have since put 10,000 more trouble-free miles on it. It's much longer than our previous Outback, and I had to move the wheel stops for it to fit into the garage. It's wide inside, so passengers don't feel scrunched together. Because of its size and weight, it gives us a very smooth, quiet ride. The front seats are very comfortable, with plenty of adjustment. The acceleration is adequate, but the car could use a few more horsepower. The adaptive cruise control is easy to set up the way you want it, and the media center apps are fairly easy to set the way you like them, much easier than my wife's Audi is. It comes with wired CarPlay standard, but I easily added a wireless dongle to avoid plugging and unplugging my phone several times a day. The sound system is another bonus, as it sounds great. There is plenty of storage space except for the front center console storage compartment. I am the primary driver of this car, and although it's much bigger than what I was looking for in my search, this Mazda was the overall best choice of the other cars I test drove. My mechanic tells me this car will easily see me to 150,000 miles with little or no system failures. Now, the negatives: On highway trips, we are averaging just 23 mpg, considerably less than my wife's car, but it must burn premium. Factoring the cost difference of premium for her car and regular for mine, the cost penalty is small. The adaptive cruise control is very slow to accelerate once you re-activate your set cruise speed with no car in front of you. I do have to use the throttle to speed it up enough to not get honked at by the car following me. The biggest downside for me is that since the rear hatch curves down at the outside corners, I am constantly hitting my head on the corners. Even with the hatch at the highest setting. With what I know now about the pluses for the CX-9, I wish we had a bought a new CX-9 instead of the Audi for my wife when we were shopping for her. I feel we would have a better car at significantly lower cost.
