Happy with M2
Don't know what people expect. If you are looking for a high end expensive sports car, shop on! With the 5 speed, this car has more than enough get up and go, and is a blast to drive. First gear could be a little taller. Seats are frim but nit uncomfortable. It handles like a go cart, and rides like one too, that's the car's design! It holds the road like glue, but picks up all the bumps. I live in Hampton Roads, VA, mostly highway driving, and with premium gas (which I recommend for performance) I average 38 mpg if I drive conservatively. Get a K&N air filter for the performance tweak, it's worth the money and the filter saves $$ in the long run as it is washable.
The Little Zoom Zoom
I have now had my 2012 two years and it has 31000 miles. The manual transmission, steering and handling are all very good for a car in this class. I also like having 4 doors on a subcompact hatchback. If you are looking for an inexpensive practical fun car this is it.

Mazda2
Great little car. Not for winter driving but overall an enjoyable ride. 5 spd. Manual that’s still fun to drive! 56,000 miles and no problems. Solid car. Almost 10 years old and still super reliable!

Great Second Car
I just purchased this vehicle. I was looking for a second car, since I'm retired and I sold my car to my daughter. I did research on all subcompact cars available and drove my top three choices. For the money, Mazda 2 was the least expensive and I have had gas mileages from 35 to 40 mpg which is a combined city/highway useage. I chose the manual because of the size of engine, I could change gears when needed faster than an automatic. I don't regret my decision in a time of our economy and gas prices.
A true Zoom-Zoom
Purchased a M2 just in sept of 2011. I love the handling on the car and yes it may be a bit short on power aka 2 least powered car sold in US market but it's light weight and amazing handling makes this the perfect city zipping car. I went with the sport because the touring is a waste of money. you get "extra" stuff you don't really need, plus for those that want to autocross the sport weights less. I'd rather add my own aftermarket gear and tuning. such as adding a in dash nav, if you have the touring version adding a in dash nav will make most of your wheel control features useless. lastly, this is a great car for easy upgrading and aftermarket work.
I've waited two years
I drove a 2002 Protege5 for nine years, the longest ever for one car. I enjoyed it. It still looked good, but I was bored, so bought the 2011 Mazda 2 hatchback. Not good, Too light, skips all over the road, trunk and back seat, too small. The economy is awful, but I would like to trade the car before it begins to have trouble. I've only 12K miles, have driven two, less than 1000 mile each round trips. Taking a 800 mile round trip in two weeks. Highway mpg sucks. How can a good, 2002, go to a poor, 2011, like that? Angry
Just what I needed
Just bought the 2011 Mazda2 to replace my slowly dying 1999 Nissan Maxima. It is awesome. The savings on gas is unbelievable. I drive mainly around town (work commute is under 4 miles on surface streets) and it handles beautifully. Contrary to the "pro" reviews, I don't find the engine noise loud and the acceleration is fine. This car has everything I had in my Maxima with the exception of cruise control (I wasn't interested in paying extra $ for fog lights, cruise control, and red seat piping on the Touring edition). Oh, and did I mention, my 16 year old thinks it is awesome!
Disappointed
I was wanting to buy a new car for my wife and we wanted a smaller car than the 96 Maxima and better gas mileage. We looked at Toyota Yaris, Prius C, Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and the Mazda 2, as well as Ford Fiesta and Chevy Sonic. We ended up choosing the Mazda 2 because it and the Fit were the only 2 assembled in Japan. I wanted the Japanese quality. I am very upset with the dealership and not real happy with the car. We've only had it for 5 weeks so maybe things will improve. I knew it was not a "road" car and after 2 hours in it my back was very sore. It does not get anywhere near the gas mileage they suggest and I've always gotten more mileage than the window sticker says I should
Loved it; hate it now
I bought my 2011 Mazda 2 new back in November 2010 and initially wrote a glowing review about fun it is drive. Well, it's fun...when it's not in the shop. Once I hit 15k I've had nothing but problems specially with the brakes. The dealer tells me they are safe and that they squeak because of the brake pad composition but why didn't they squeak for the first year? Squeaks at low and high speeds and is embarrassing. I also has to flush the transmission at 20k because the fluid it comes with is cheap junk. At 22,300 miles I'm trading for a Honda Fit this weekend. No more mazdas for this buyer. Don't buy this car; save your money, take on a bigger payment and get a car with a better warranty.
Fuel efficient asf
After owning the car for a few months I can confidently say it’s a great car. Not a good for long road trips but manageable. Is good for city driving and for blasting down the highway at fast speeds. The interior is not as bad as people make it out to be. If you take good care of it, the dash and interior will remain nice (obviously) The only complaint I have is after using the handbrake for so long it has become loose? The hand brake still works no problem but it wiggles from side to side if it’s off. The car has a good sound system and can handle heavy base or just loud music. Good car, drives and handles well.
Great car
Great car. Bought it with 104,000 miles, now have 144,000 miles. I bought it with an acceptable mecanical condition, that needed very much maintaining and changing parts. But again, bought it pretty cheap. The car runs very great. I have the automatic, yes it has long shifts and it's not the fastest or most responsive in the freeway, but going at about 70 mph or below no problem, in the city is where it shines. I have good driving habits, not a turtle but also rarely accelerate to the red line. It gets me about 29 mpg avg, which is great for a 4 speed with 144,000 miles, original engine, original tranny, and I would say I drive 50/50 city freeway. It has made 7 12 hr trips (i leave to go to college), and has been in rough roads. GREAT CAR. Just give it good maintenance! Oil changes, TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGES, air filter, clean the MAF, change the spark plugs every 3-4 years, and you'll see that this thing is good. Downsides: Obviously the size, but I would say given what you know you are buying, the suspension. I got it with a worn out suspension, and I've replaced all parts (struts, shocks, ball joint, linkage, and even tie rods) with good brands (either oem, moog, bilstein). Car handles great, but in rough roads you will still always feel everything. It using small tires also has to do with this. And since it's an older car, plastics aren't very stable now, so on imperfections you will hear and feel it wiggle or rattle.

Best car ever!
I purchased my green Mazda 2 (2011) in 2014. In 2023 it now has over 250k kilometres on it, and it doesn't cost me a dime to drive except for the normal costs due to maintenance. Never, ever has this car let me down. I'm just getting the front brakes done this year. First time ever. Get lots of comments on this lovely green colour.

Makes Getting Groceries Fun!
Sure, 100 hp is not a lot, and it (automatic) can be a little funky with the gear changes. Normally, you may experience a slight latency between hammering your fit down and the engine response. THAT BEING SAID— even in the automatic, you can drive it like a quick manual. Turning off overdrive functions like it's sport mode, giving way WAY more pedal response and increasing the rev limit. Cons: excludes the highest gear, so to really drive the 2 with some spirit on the automatic, be ready to read the engine and switch overdrive off/on depending on the gear. It makes even the auto very involved and really tons of fun. As previously mentioned, the steering responsiveness is so sporty and precise, it made me second guess whether it was electronic or hydraulic. Unlike many modern cars, it isn't *too* soft, and gives you a go-kart-like driving experience. It could use a little more power, but frankly, this obsession with through-the-roof power numbers comes at a loss of the small joys of everyday driving. Where a 500hp mustang can be a blast at the track, this little car can make trips to target or on some local backroads a blast. It grows on you and the more you drive it the more you become infatuated with the experience, the look, the quirks. I have gotten this thing over hills and around corners on some country roads at 80-90mph and it felt like it could do more. Maintenance is cheap and the car rarely complains. I bought mine at 87k miles for 4k, have absolutely thrown it about, driven across the country several times, and even installed a hitch and pulled a small boat for 2000 miles. I have performed every kind of odd test you can imagine, and I can say I would buy it again.

Automatic transmission is terrible
The car is great, but NOT with an automatic tranny. I would have bought the stick but my wife can't drive a stick. I miss my Echo, that was the best car I've ever owned. The ride is fine. But getting out into traffic is dangerous. The acceleration is very laggy. There's a delay. Going around corners is sketchy because throttle control is a guessing game. You step on the gas and it's a crapshoot what's going to happen. There's no gradual acceleration, it hits - reminiscent of a 2-stroke dirtbike. The cruise control buttons are my least favorite of all the types I've had. The fuel economy is not what I'd expect from a tiny car. The driver seat is all the way back and I'm 5'8".
Mazda 2 not for you
