Used 2020 Kia Telluride Consumer Reviews
Great looks, unreliable
Motor blown before 20k miles. I thought this was the coolest looking car and I was so excited when I got it. My very opinionated buddy warned me it was “still a Kia.” Unfortunately, I think he was right. Maybe I got the lemon in a bunch, but now the dealer says it’s going to be a month+ before I get the car back due to Covid shortages.
Very impressive so far.
First, let me say that Kia was not even on radar when I started looking for a vehicle, but my wife saw some reviews and suggested I look at one. I was considering several mid sized SUVs including the Telluride, Honda Pilot, Acura MDX, Subaru Ascent and Ford Explorer. In the end the final choice came down to the Telluride (EX model) and the Pilot (Touring model). Several items made the decision quite easy. First the front passenger room in the Pilot is extremely limited and I am only 5' 10" (the driver's side has more room, please note that the front seat legroom dimensions quoted for every car are measured on the drivers side). Second, the Pilot's interior is bland compared to the Telluride. Third, the 9 speed transmission in the Pilot Touring is not very smooth based on my test drive. Fourth, the handling on the Pilot is not quite as good as the Telluride (not just my opinion, look at Consumer Reports [who are totally independent], numbers on emergency handling and braking). Fifth, there is very little room behind the third seat for luggage. Please note that we have owned a Honda Pilot and 6 Acura's over the years so we are big fans of Honda products. The Telluride has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. I find the ride better and quieter than the Pilot. There are features on the Telluride that I feel are better than the Pilot and vice versa, but overall I feel that the edge clearly goes to the Telluride. It is still too early to know how reliable the Telluride will be and how good the safety ratings are going to be so I cannot comment on those. I will say that there is one feature not on the EX that are on many cars and that is the lack of memory seat/mirror settings for the drivers seat. I know many people are complaining about having to pay thousands over MSRP, but if you are willing to search around you can find them for only slight markups. Personally, I think the vehicle is underpriced by several thousand dollars at a bare minimum. There have also been a few complaints about issues, these is typical for every totally new model that comes out and the sooner you buy after initial introduction the more likely it is to have problems as various bugs get worked out.

Engine overheating
My car is not even a year old and well under 10,000 miles. Engine overheating warning issues due to coolant leak. This is now a recognized problem with tellurides. My car has been out of commission for over a month as I really can’t drive it for prolonged periods. And even with this I’m dumping a gallon of coolant about every 4 days. Dealer service department not helpful. I’m very frustrated and completely wishing I bought a different vehicle as I’m sure this may be the beginning of multiple problems
AC Condenser Issue - beware!
Bought a new 2020 Telluride. AC stopped working at 14k miles. As many other owners have been told by their dealership service department, “a rock has damaged your condenser”. $1700 repair once the part is located (it has been 6 weeks and still on back order with no ETA. Absolutely no help from dealer (Liberty Kia in IL) or customer service line. Car drives well, but I would definitely not recommend given the dozens of similar reports, often in first year.
Eye Catcher
The first time I saw the Telluride advertised, I knew I wanted one....It took two months to get the color( gravity gray) and model ( EX) I wanted... Because I was not ready to walk away from from this vehicle, I know I did not get the best deal...For sure, they are proud of the Telluride! Pros: Beautiful, comfortable and roomy vehicle..rides extremely smooth...has Michelin tires ( not Korean tires) excelleration is good, especially in the sports mode ( can't wait to try snow mode), Lots of bells and whistles ( almost too many, as I turned a few off), great metallic paint job Cons: Vehicle manual does not fit in glove compartment ( oops?) so it takes up cup holder room in passenger door. My EX does not have an integrated garage door opener ( should be standard on a $42,000 vehicle) I had to search for my old garage door opener and put new batteries in it.. The steering is really stiff - maybe because I turned off the lane assist. Cluttered climate controls Update: I’ve been driving the Telluride for over a year now. I have had no issues, still a great vehicle. One of the most comfortable vehicles that I have ever owned..
