Great Car If You Can Find a Good One
If you like the way the car looks and drives and can find one with relatively low miles, that has been maintained and hasn't been too abused, go for it. I'm happy that I did. The S Type from 2003 on has an improved drive train, interior, and reliability. Stay on top of leaks and maintenance and it should hold up fine. The car drives super smooth and with the NA 4.2 V8 is pretty quick. If you want to have the most elegant car at the drag strip go for the R model, if you don't like to drive fast a V6 model is the most plentiful and still has 240 HP for passing other cars. Ford has made Jaguar a better car and much more reliable than the ones from the 80's and 90's, going from the bottom of the reliability lists to the top. With the rear seats folded down there is a lot of storage in back, making it practical too. Don't use the car for carrying gravel or firewood though, the car is too dignified for that. Because most people think that a Jaguar is going to explode at any moment they are a bargain for what you get too.

A great luxury car value after New wears off
18 months after buying this Jag, and 17.000 miles, I still really enjoy driving it. I was amazed to find, on long, 75 mph desert highways that the mileage with this V8 went over 40 mpg consistently; that included 5,000 - 8,000 foot changes in altitude. At 83,000, I started to lose coils (COP). after 3 failed done separately, I did the other 5 in a batch. You don't have to pay $169 each at a dealer. The coils are available online for as little as $18 each. Of course, the first 3 I bought were "I need it now" and purchased from Autozone for $50 each. Not that bad. First failure I replaced the spark plug too, but it was in such nice shape I didn't on the other 7 cylinders, and my performance and mileage are still good.

I love this car!!!
I bought my car in 2005 with 10k miles on it. It is my all the time car and now has 97k miles on it. The only problems I have had is the front driver side barren went out, replaced the brakes twice, and the electronic e-brake went out (which I have not replace). I do not considered these major problems. I love this car and complete recommend it to any one. I do not plan on replacing it anytime soon. I have been through 2 major accidents and have never been hurt. The car still rides smooth and if you look at it you would never know it has been through the accidents.
WOW!
I just purchased a 2003 S-type. I couldn't be happier. It had 82K miles on it and drives like its brand new. I cant believe I own a Jag. I happy as heck......
Unbelievable!
This car is nothing short of incredible! Be prepared for massive stares of envy wherever you go. It's nice to have a vehicle that has enough speed to leave, even those hemi powered vehicles gasping for breath. The passing power is world class. It leaves all but the world's fastest cars on the highway. Plain and simple. This car will stop, corner and then speed with the same authority as any performance car costing over a hundred thousand dollars. I just love this car.
Life Cycle of the S Type
I purchased this car from a private party that fell on hard times after only putting 4100 miles on it. I love the styling of the vehicle and wanted the 4.2 liter V8. This car was to be my dream car. After seven years, I have to admit that it has lived up to most of my expectations. The original warranty, and then the extended warranty I purchased later, covered just about everything I could have requested. I get approximately 22 MPG with about 80% of my driving on the freeways of Southern California. By using Michelin touring tires I find that the ride cushion and quietness are better than I had expected. I compare the acceleration with what I had as a kid with my '64 Olds 442.
A real head turner
Bought this British Racing Green vehicle from the dealer with 41,000 miles. Came with a 100,000 mile warranty. Car is immaculate inside and out. Added beehive grille, chrome pillars and side mirrors. Vehicle looks like it just came off the assembly line. Power is awesome, car is quiet and comfortable. Vehicle now has 131,000 miles and going great. Biggest expense to date was replacement of passenger side Xenon Headlight Assembly (leveling device went). Real pain to change burnt headlamp bulb. Bumper needs to be dropped adding a big cost for a simple problem.
What's not to love!
This car is an absolute pleasure. It's everything I hoped it would be. I have no complaints. Friends told me not to buy it, but its performance has proved them wrong, not to mention it's classy appearance. Buy one, you won't be sorry!
I love it
My cat had 30k miles on it when I bought it. I was very impressed with the power from a V6. As far as reliability goes--a bolt fell out of the J-gate at 35k, temp sensor failed,so no heat, a PLASTIC part of the self adjusting HID lights failed. All fixed under warranty. Now at 70K I have spent $1200 in the lst week to replace the PLASTIC radiator overflow tank and then a radiator hose with a PLASTIC part in it that broke. Jaguar- -do you see a trend here??? Great looking car, great driving car, comfortable and economical in the gas department. I drive on flat highways in Florida and see low 30's all the time. If you put your foot in it, it will growl and take off. I love the exhaust growl.
Great Performance and Style
This car is startlingly fast! Despite being a 4000 lb luxury sedan it corners like a sports car. Breaks are great! I get tons of looks and compliments on the styling. The R has much better proportions than the standard S-Type. The wood and leather interior is very classy. I prefer it to the modernized XF interior. Dealer Repair costs are extremely high... especially if there is only one Jag dealer locally. Most independent shops refuse to touch this car, however even after 80,000 miles this car has only been to the shop a handful of times. My only real complaint is about the small size of the tank. I travel a lot and I wish I could go over 400 miles between petrol stops.
Wow....Former Lexus Driver is wowed by
I owned five Lexus Cars before jumping to a Jaguar S Type R earlier this year. The folks at Lexus seemed to have no interest in retaining a repeat customer, (my wife and I both had them, LS 400 and RX 300). I am so happy I made the switch. The staff at the dealership is fabulous, they actually remember your name. And contrary to what folks have said in the past, this Jag works great, NO repeat NO quality problems. I can't think of a rattle or a squeak to complain about. You have to drive this car to appreciate it..a nice commuter car during the week and a hell raiser on weekends... I'm a convert..I might just end up with five..
Wow, I love this car!!
It's been just over a week and I am deeply in love with my Jaguar. I moved from a Mustang GT to the Jag and the change is amazing. The elegance of the car enhances the great look. You feel like you are in an expensive resort. The deep hue of the wood, the buttery soft leather, the smooth coolness of the steering wheel, just perfect. The refined ride is a great complement to the quiet interior and the nav system is easy to use. I Know it has only been a week, but wow, I love this car!!
Awesome
I have had this car for about nine months and I haven't had any problems. The car performs very well and is certainly a head turner. I have had many people say that they really like the way that this car looks. I appreciate the new renovations this year as opposed to the last years model.
Love this car
We purchased our Jag used a few years ago. It had about 48,000 miles on it at the time and had been a lease vehicle. We had some initial mechanical issues. But after we got those straightened out, the car has been wonderful. I absolutely love driving it and will probably keep it until the wheels fall off.
Don't mess with gorgeous
Outstanding bargain as a 2003 thanks to Jag's old reputation for unreliability. Best performance sedan under 60K. Has been very reliable so far. Nothing more than scheduled maintenance. Impressive performance, especially if you factor in the automatic and all the Jaguar nanny electronics (delimiter, Traction, etc). Gorgeous exterior that gets looks everywhere. It's acceleration sneaks up on other performance cars, especially M3s and M5s. Interior fit and finish is excellent and sumptuous. Brakes are grabby (good) and stop the car with authority. The mesh grill and fat 275 tires make the car. Supercharger whine is music over 3500rpm. Butt-dyno feels like a 4.8-4.9s car, not 5-5.2.
Clock
The clock needs to be easier to set. I gave up on changing it for daylight savings time. I love my Jag. My son bought it when he got out of the Navy. One month later he said he was going to trade it in. That it was an old man's car. I told him I would give him my 2002 Chevrolet Impala that was paid for and I would take over the Jag. I got the better deal.

What a Lemon!
We purchased used in 06.3 1000 miles. Fair price.Cool looking car. My wife thought it was the 2nd coming,I couldn't get her out of it. Thought this was a good investment for years to come. Thought it would be reliable, considering it was a jag.The first 2 years were ok-the tranny and oil pans were leaking, minor really. We had them repaired. The last 1 1/2 years have been difficult to say the least. The car has had its instrument cluster put into a fridge, dash lights have done off/on while driving at night, cd player problems, heating controller malfunctions, exhaust issues, other elect issues, and most recently the lower control arm needs to be rpl-it leaks($1100.00) Show me the money-looks great!
Mustang to Jag
Like MikeL, I went from a Mustang to Jag. Jag was a executive car for major dealership, so I'm first private owner. Was well cared for and maintain. Most think it's brand new. No problems whatsoever, and the guys at the dealership miss her. Love the ride as extremely quiet and relaxing. All black leather with silver exterior nice, but heats up in the summer sun. Garaged most of time. AC quiet even at full blast as to not drown out cd. All in all, excellent and attention getting ride. They lose value after newness, as the window sticker showed $47,478 and I got this perfect specimen for under $10,000. Maybe the economy and I was paying cash. Couldn't think of a greater value.
Nice Ride
It is still very new, just over 1000 miles on it but I really like the ride and handling. I kind of wish I would have purchased the v-8, this is my first 6 and while it is adaquate, I miss the power of a v-8.
sassy kiytty
bought this car from a female friend.i'm the third owner.this car is wicked fast.definitly an eye catcher from both sexes. my first british car and so far so good.awesome car.

Former Vette Owner Sold on Jag S-Type V8
With only 1,500 miles on the odometer, I absolutely love my 2003 S-type. Having been used to gut wrenching off the line performance from my Vette, I was really apprehensive about the major shift in ownership. The Jag is second to none on interior and exterior quality and workmanship (something that has always been my sore point with the Vettes). The 4.2 Liter has not disappointed me in the least. The seats are excellent in comfort and the high quality of leather is wonderful. Did not go with the sport option, mainly as an an eye appeal decision. I like the natural wood, and chrome trim rather than the gray wood. Just a wonderful car inside and out.
SO FAR SO GOOD
HAD BMW'S AND MERCEDES IN THE PAST. FIRST JAG AND SO FAR I LOVE IT. EVERYTHING WORKS ALTHOUGH SO FAR THE GAS MILEAGE ISN'T SO HOT. AVE. 21 MILES/GAL. THE ONLY TIME I SEE THE DEALER IS WHEN I GO FOR A WASH I THINK IT'S THE BEST LOOKING SEDAN ON THE ROAD. CHANGED TO JAG CAUSE I GOT FED UP WITH GETTING RIPPED OFF EVERYTIME I WENT IN FOR MERCEDES SERVICE. THE DEALER WAS ARROGANT. HE THOUGHT HE MUST BE SELLING POPE MOBILES. YOU MIGHT AS WELL HAND HIM YOUR WALLET WHEN YOU ENTER THE SERVICE AREA. ALSO HAD FOUR MERCEDES AND WITH EACH ONE THE QUALITY PROGRESSIVELY WENT DOWN.
Turns more heads than any other car yet
I took ownership right after the 2003's were introduced. Gas milage on trips is about 31 mpg traveling between 70 and 80 mph. overall has averaged 25 mpg. Outstanding!! There were a few minor problems but the dealer here in Austin, TX took care of everything in a very satisfactory manner, and always provided a Jag loaner car. It is the best car I have owned for driving on the highway and around town. I usually have driven Cadillacs.
Great Sports Sedan
I purchased a 2003 S-Type with the 5- speed manual transmission. Great performance, smooth shifting, very nice exhaust note on acceleration. Absolutely no problems to report. The car is beautifully styled inside and out, fit and finish is top-notch. I average right at 20 mpg around town, and took a 4 hour highway trip recently and the computer indicated 31.5 mpg. My third Jag and the best yet.
Excellent All Around Luxury Sports Sedan
This car flat out moves. Very fast acceleration and very good braking. This car has a nice balance of ride and handling. The one wheel drive will spin very easily though, positive traction should definitely be on this car. The fun part is that it will smoke the tires at will if you are into that type of thing (who... me?). The interior is gorgeous, the seats are uber comfortable and the car is very quiet... until you gas it hard, that is. People often complain about the loudness of the supercharger, but I love it. People stare at this car, it is definitely a head turner. Have had no problems with this car yet.
cal
Great handling car, lots of fun to drive. Could use a little more power, but good for a V6.
Stype R
The car is wonderful. It's looks, the quality, the finish, the fit..all first class. The engine's whine is so neat to hear yet it's not overly invading into the cabin. All I want to do is drive the car. Even a few BLOCKS!!! The dealer was top notch also. The style vs. the sporty nature of it is something that words cannot describe. People stop me all over the place asking me what it is and are stunned at it's looks.
Beautiful 390 HP Jag
Beautiful car with tremendous speed. I bought this car with 51 mi on it from a private owner. I now have 60 mi on it and have the following to report. The supercharger in the car works great, and I love the fact that I can beat almost anybody that pulls up next to me with such a classy vehicle. I also get many compliments on it. Now for the bad stuff. The dual heating system in mine is already having problems and heat seems to blow from some vents when the AC is on. I'm told it's a $1500 problem to solve. Also the plastic bevel and cup holders in the back are cheaply made and will break. Visor mirror covers are made of the same junk plastic and have also broken. Still like it so far!
Great car.
This is just a great car. I fell in love with it the first test drive. A great car.
Tea Cup Holders
Great Car...Just a few minor interior changes would make it even better. Cup holders in front are small. Maybe the English have small tea cups. That's all. See John Rubik in sales he was great too.
Improved Driver features
Having purchased a new 2001 S-Type and enjoyed it for 2 plus years, I traded it in for a new 2003 4.2 S type after seeing the improved design regarding placement of navigation display, telephone, audio and climate controls. The car is a pleasure to drive. Excellent handling and great power. Head room and trunk space are a little tight.
My Ride Jaguar S Type
Having done my due diligence test driving a used BMW and Benz - both fine my wife loves hers - I selected Jag 03 S Type V6 with 18K miles + factory warranty. No paintwork, no smoker, fully loaded, all keys and manuals. Out the door from used dealer at around $20K maybe the best used car I ever bought. Love the ZF 5Spd automatic - snickity snick - there's a learning curve to get the RPMs up there where it's fun to drive. Mine is dark grey metallic, light grey fine leather interior. Looks right at home at the Country Club and in a pinch I've even lowered the back seats and hauled 8 ft lumber! Great car, buy it right, find one with some warranty and enjoy!
Silk Cat / Sharp Claws
After 52,000 miles still an amazing driving experience. Rock sold body structure and build quality. Still turns heads and elicits admiring comments with its timeless design. Engine and powertrain among the best on the planet. Rocket-like acceleration and cat like handling when you want it, civility when you don't. Had a failure of the adaptive HID headlight (left side) out of warranty, but Jag paid 1/2 the bill. Just noticed grease seal leak on right rear suspension. Interior temperature sensor replaced last year to fix malfunctioning A/C. That's it for repairs. Mid 20s highway mileage very reasonable
The S-Type is solid and stylish!
The S-type Jag, 4.0 V-8 sports model is one hot machine. It doesn't lean into sharp curves, but hugs the road like a magnet on a refrigerator. This car is solid, with no squeeks or creaks. Don't confuse it with your father's Ford. Don't confuse these beauties with Jags from the past that had electrical and other problems. Ford has focused on quality - and they have delivered.
Jaguar S type 4.2 Sport package
I have had this car a short time and put 2500 miles on it. This was more than enough to tell I made a good choice. It handles like it should have no fenders and paddle shifters (just kidding). Seriously the best handling sedan I have ever driven and I have owned three BMW's in the past 15 years plus a cadillac STS which was somewhat of a dissapointment in all respects. This car has looks, performance, and handling. What more could you want.
interior quality design flaws
Bought the car new. The interior is made cheaply and has flaws. The headliner fell down after a few years and is expensive to replace. The vanity mirrors have covers that break off easily. The cigarette lighter works some of the time. The clock and radio require the manual to reset as it is not easy to remember.
The Cat's Meow
This car has standard suspension and has excellent handling and braking. The interior layout is just fair. It lacks thoughtful displays a dedicated driver needs; eg, the information panels are tiny, LCD panels that cannot be read when wearing polarized lenses. The old J-gate transmission shifter needs updating. The auto on/off lights and wipers are terrific. The seats are extremely comfortable, even in back, where the seats can fold down. Unfortunately the trunk is so designed as to limit access of some larger boxes.
Unreliable Jaguar
Excellent driving car and good road mileage. But just spent $4,523 for repairs on a car with only 43,652 miles on it. Bought it with 20,000 miles on it and have taken it to only the dealer for service. Head light leveling device went out, $932.75. Clunk in rear end at low speeds, replace flange-output, $586.63. Brakes and rotors,$1,779.57. Dealer said sorry for first two items. I expected to pay for brakes. They said it is out of warranty, which is 4 years or 50,000 miles. Even Hyundai has a 10 year and 100,000 miles! I have owned three BMWs and great backup in the past. I owned a 62'Jaguar XKE convertible and loved it's driving but hated it unreliability.
Awesome!
A very fast cat! It has more than enough power and it's there when it's needed. Comfort is outstanding. Turns are effortless, does not driv like a 4-door. I just wish it would stay on the road and not in the shop. first a fron right suspension problem. Brakes (rotors and pads) needed replacement just after 25,000 mile and it's in the shop again for an electrical "glitch."
love it
The car is 70% redone for 2003 and yet I have had absolutely no problems since delivery. The dealer was business like, did'nt waste my time and delivered when he said he would, with the equipment I ordered. The Nav system is superb, you can't fool it. the tranny is fun and love the J-gate.
Raves for the S type
The styling is both striking and beautiful with a reto flair that exhudes an elegance not found in other automobiles today.
Not like Jaguars of the past
This is my second S type. I bought a 2002 S type 4.0, liked it so much I put 24000 miles on in 11 months. So I decided to upgrade to the S type R and it is a headturner that is an absolute pleasure to drive. Despite the supercharged power I still get very good fuel economy. Its like driving a Porsche sedan.
New to Jaguar - and Loving It!
I just leased a 2003 S-Type V8 as my new company vehicle and I'm very impressed so far. The car looks great, commands a ton of respect and goes much quicker than I would have imagined. The fuel economy is not great and I've noticed the brake dust problem as well but it sure is a heck of a lot of fun to drive!
The 2003 S Type
It's the little things that annoy me. The automatic trunk release doesn't always pop open all the way. The climate control stopped working and got stuck on hot, very hot! Overall the car has a nice smooth ride and it's very comfortable. All the luxury features are a plus. The car has excellent accelaration with all the controls at your fingertips.
cant believe its a jaguar!
after 13 bmws, i made a move for the jaguar because of its standard safety features and its timeless beauty. I also opted for the V6 which i knew is a derivative of the Ford Duratec, one of the best and most reliable 6's out there. nothing has disappointed me; i got the sport package which better approximates a BMW type of ride and has bigger brakes-a plus with Florida drivers! And the ZF 6 speed automatic is superior to anything short of the 745i. Put a thousand miles on the first week of all types of road conditions with 23 MPG! So far, so great!
What a Fabulous Vehicle
If there is a more satisfying luxury mid-sized ride in the world, I don't know what it could be. The S-Type Jaguar is the first of many fine autos I've owned that meets or exceeds all of my lofty expectations. The only negative is that my standards have now become so demanding that I suspect I can never be as happy with any other car. The fit and finish is superb and the styling is the best of any other car in its class. The only equipment improvement would be to create a more compact key remote design (it's impossible to attach other keys with the current fob). Be sure to get the Performance Package with adjustable pedals and steering etc.
lease
great car, but not happy with morning starts, car seems to miss , like an old type car with a carb. and i use top grade gas 93 and 94 oct. also this ten 10 thousand mile oil and filter change is a cock of bull. i had it changed at 4000 miles and i will have it done every 3 to 3500 miles to protect engine .
S-Type R is incredible...Wow
Wow, what a car. I'm so glad I did not buy the M5. Power, style and that beautiful retro Jag look. Seating for 5, the smooth transmission (that is also in the 745iL) and much more power than the 911. It is still a very unique car because the R just came out in '03. I hear that the model goes unchanged into '04, which says wonders for the engineering of the new R.
Love this car!!
Just purchased an S-type 4.2 after trading in my Mercedes E320. Wow what a difference. This car will blow anything away with its 300 hp. I noticed after having the car for just a couple of days that they brakes were squeaking. The dealership ended up replaceing the brakes in the front for FREE. Something that is not even covered in warranty, so needless to say, we are happy. I love my British Racing Green Jag!!!
Quick Silver Cat
Great combo of performance, style, and luxury. Competent handling at 8/10ths, great acceleration only limited by "open" rear end, electronic trac control and lazy ECU that limits revs in lower gears. Incredible suspension for great ride and good all around handling. Gets more looks (especially females) than my M5 and is much a more enjoyable ride around town. Had a few annoying but non-critical electrical glitchs, overall releiability is good but build quailty is only average. 28 mpg on the hwy..WOW. I love the car... it's unique, stylish, comfortable, quick, and overall a very competent sport sedan. Used prices offer an incredible value if you're the buyer. LOVE IT!
