Avoid Isuzu
Due to an underdesign, the engine burns oil FAST! The only fix is to rebuild the engine. This engine is not friendly for the DIY'er.
Best Vehicle We've Owned!
We bought this Trooper new and at 200,000 miles it is still going strong. The interior and exterior still look like new. The a/c gave out at about 120,000 miles. We had to replace the rotors at 140,000 miles and the mechanic couldn't believe it. The muffler was replaced at 150,000. We love the cargo room and passenger roominess plus the durability of the interior. Living in the upper peninsula of Michigan with tons of snow, I always feel secure in knowing I can make it home in all kinds of weather.
2003 Review
Realiability has been a good experience for me.
Trooper limited
Purchased from the original owner and with ultra low miles (15,000) and in as new condition. Handling is a bit ponderous, but it's a truck. Love the dual locking front/rear axles and compared to domestics, very quiet in 4X4 mode. Pig on gas, great build quality. Leather seats are very firm, great for long hauls but almost like sitting on a board for short runs. Biggest sunroof I have ever seen, quality product; too bad GM didn't promote it.
I own a Rodeo and wanted a Trooper
My wife and I just bought our Trooper w/ 133 k miles for 3K. The previous owner told me about the oil cooler o-rings leaking oil. Through the research I had done, I knew this was a common and easy to fix problem. Isuzu fixed the oil leak problem in 98, but it is very common in every year before that. ALL ISUZU'S USE LOTS OF OIL. It does not affect performance or longevity. I feel like I could go anywhere in our Trooper. It still looks sharp, but at 6'4" and 300 lb. it is a little cramped for me in the drivers seat. My kids have much more space in the back seat than they do in my Rodeo.
