Windstar Woes
Transmission failure at 54,000 miles...problems prior to failure. Eng frequently will not idle after start. Valve(?) noise when engine is cold. Door seals poor with resultant loud road and wind noise. On board computer for system information malfunctioned after one year. 2nd Windstar...will not purchase another and probably will not purchase another Ford product!
Very Good Hauler
This is my wife's van, and she won't give it up! Primarily because of it's versatility, hauling grandkids, groceries, garden stuff, etc. One of our boys uses it to take his mountain bike to all sorts of places. Our dealer is very responsive and timely with service work. We also have a Lexus which has the best service we've ever experienced and while I wouldn't put our Ford Dealer quite on par, they are not far behind. The van has just over 27000 miles and we have had no problems at all since one minor fit & finish complaint at delivery which was corrected with no hassle.

Beyond Good
This mini van is nice and comfortable for the whole family. Great for long trips. I got up to 600 miles to the tank on long distance. Need more pep small engine for heave cargo. It has 3.8 Liter, 200 hp, 26 gallon tank. I am some what happy, but there's room for improvement. Local mpg I only get 400 miles to the tank.
1999 Ford Windstar SEL
The Windstar isn't a good car. The engine is noisy and rough. The transmission in our car had to be replaced after 13000 miles and made rough shifts. The ride is pretty good and the seats are good. There is also a lot of space in the back as well as the cargo area. The problem is that the all the very heavy rear seats have to be removed. The V6 engine is fairly powerful, but it isn't fast at all. The wind noise is the most annoying part of this minivan. The Windstar should get good gas mileage, but ours averaged 14 mpg with a roof rack. The Windstar is a good used buy, but if I were able to make the purchase again I would have chosen the Honda Odyssey.
Ford Windstar
It sways too much during normal driving at safe speeds. There have been three recalls in three years which says a lot. No improvements in at least thirty years in the electrical system. Fords have problems with tail and stop/warning lights frequently burning out and the modular problems which I first incurred in my 1978 Mercury Colony Park to this day are not corrected. On steep inclines when shifting from park into gear, there is a loud clunk in the transmission yet Ford claims they do not know the cause.
