My Rally review

I bought the Dart sxt (rally) immediately after it became available in the fall of 2012. It came with most of the features that I wanted, such as Bluetooth, satellite radio, remote start and fog lights. It has the Rally trim, which included the red exterior with black accents, along with the black/red interior striping. The car looks very sharp and its fun to drive. It came with the 2.0 tigershark engine and the automatic transmission, which work very well together. It has served me very well for over 4 years with no major mechanical problems. 11/06/16..update.. The car is still fun to drive but has developed some quirks that I am trying to understand. The security system has a glitch that will cause the doors to lock and the horn to sound while just sitting in my driveway. I had to disconnect the battery a while back in order to stop the horn from blowing. The key fob was not able to silence the alarm. After replacing the battery in BOTH key fobs the problem appeared to be resolved, but the doors will still occasionally lock for no apparent reason.

Second one and still problems

I got my dart when they first came out and loved it until at 911 miles all lights came on and the engine stopped. Took in to dealer they had it for 2 weeks and then told me they couldn't fix it didn't know what was the problem with it. So they reordered me another Dart which took over 10 weeks to get. In rental car all this time. Wow finely got my other new Dart. Keep in garage for the winter now I have it back out on the road was doing good up to 6000 miles. Then when the tranny got heated up and would shift it would raz the engine up to high RPM's and thump really bad and not want to pull very well. So you guessed it back in the shop again. This is really bad in second and fourth gear.

Do you like pain and misery? Then buy a 2013 Dart!

"Never buy a first year model". I should have heeded those words but suddenly found myself needing a new car in the summer of 2013 when my trusty 11 year old Neon was totaled by a hit and run driver. First the pros: coolest tail lights ever on a modern car. The entire width of the racetrack style lamps lit up at night, Overall the exterior looked fresh and exciting. Mine had the Rallye trim level which meant it included the snazzy red and black interior that looked really stylish and sporty. I found the seats to be comfy and held me in place nicely. The interior ergonomics were good overall. The engine, while not the most powerful (2.0 liter), was perfectly adequate, good on gas, and quite reliable... about the only reliable thing on the car. Now the cons. Are you sitting down? This will take a while. -the right side sun visor gave up the ghost one day and fell off. I was in the car when it happened. Very odd thing to witness. You'd think it was an easy thing to reattach, such was not the case and it never happened. This was the first thing to go wrong, and while a little thing, it was like a door opening to a world of misery soon to follow. -the trunk lid liked to pop open at totally random times. Lots of fun when travelling on the highway, or when you come out of a store only to find the trunk open and practically inviting anyone to reach in and take whatever they want. It got to a point where I had to put things in the backseat instead as that was more secure. -the license plate light went out. If only it was a burnt out bulb. The problem had to be traced to a certain wire and it was an expensive thing to fix ($575) as the car was practically stuffed with wires. -the security alarm like to sound itself at totally random times too. I recall a particularly interesting time when a cop pulled me over because it seemed I had stolen the car, when it was just the alarm saying hello to the world. I calmly explained the situation and he was completely understanding and sympathetic. -the clutch gave out at 55,000 kms (34,000 miles). I've been driving stick shifts for years and never ever had that happen to me before. -the front right power window motor had to be replaced twice. -the paint on the hood started bubbling and the metal underneath rusting when the car was just three years old. There was a recall for this, but Dodge did everything in their power to not honor it for me. -aside from routine maintenance items (oil filters, spark plugs, etc.), almost every other part was always on backorder at the dealership -and this was while the car was in production and mine was still under warranty. There were a few occasions where I had to rent a car because the dealership couldn't fix mine in a reasonable amount of time. Seeing as those were not my fault at all, I suggested they comp me at least in part for the rentals. Flat out no from them. In fact, I recall one occasion when I needed one of my hyper-black wheels replaced. I was told it would take a couple days. After which, I was told another week. Then after three weeks, they said nobody has hyper-black wheels. This was in 2015. They then offered to replace all my extra-cost wheels for the basic silver style at no cost and acted like they were doing me a huge favor. Keep in mind, I had a rental car, actually a Jeep Wrangler, for nearly a month and that bill was pretty high. I realized two things: loyalty towards a dealership is not rewarded at all, and that I should have bought a Wrangler instead of the Dart but I didn't know any better at the time. -it had low profile tires that were so delicate, one winter I had to replace 6 tires! I've had it with 'rubber-band' tires as they cannot stand anything other than glass-smooth roads, and around here, uneven surfaces and potholes are the norm. Nothing less than 55 series from now on. -the check engine light came on a lot and just as often would turn itself off. A bit disconcerting to say the least. -the strangest thing to go wrong with the car were the windshield wipers. It's not that they stopped working. Quite the opposite. The couldn't be turned off. As soon as you turned the key in the ignition, they started and wouldn't stop until you turned off the car. I thought it would be a simple fix, like changing the fuse. But here's the scoop -there was no fuse! I was informed by a few places (dealerships and independent garages) that the windshield wiper stalk would have to be replaced, which meant the entire steering column had to be taken apart to get to the necessary area of concern. I was quoted on average of about $1500 for that. But it didn't stop there, that would have been too easy! I was also told that most likely the PCM would have to be replaced too. So add another $500 to the bill. All told, with tax, I was looking at over two grand to fix something which never should have broke in the first place. I told them to forget it and continued to drive for the next year and a half with the wipers constantly going. Embarrassing? Absolutely! But I had had enough of feeding that money pit. -the key fobs were a nightmare and had to be replaced several times when it was clear new batteries did nothing. Am I the only one who misses proper metal keys? They have one job and do it well, and they never break. -the suspension was noisy from the start. Rattling, squeaking, even grinding sounds would occur. -but the final straw was on one very cold night in February when I was about to head home. I went to open the door and the door handle came off in my hand. And that it happened so easily, as if nothing was holding it in place. I tried the passenger side next. Guess what happened! Thankfully I had the car unlocked and very gingerly tried one of the rear doors. It did not break, but I did not enjoy having to climb over the front seat while trying to avoid accidentally assaulting myself on the gearshift. The next day I traded in the car for something else. The funny thing is, that day the weather forecast was wet snow and wouldn't you know it, that was the day the wipers finally died. What a harrowing experience that was! The used-car dealership was a half hour drive away (on a good day). It took me nearly 2 hours to get there as I did not dare take the highway and drove on side streets instead where traffic was light and I could pull over every minute or two to wipe the windshield with my arm. I figured if I had the car towed to the used car dealership, I would get even less money than the pittance we agreed upon. I had this car for seven painful years and accumulated a grand total of only 83,000 kms, (about 52,000 miles). I was so happy to get rid of it and wonder why I punished myself for so long with this vehicular nightmare. All told, with all its problems, it needed about $5000 worth of repairs just to bring it back to normal. I got $2000 for it as a trade-in, which might seem a little low, but considered myself lucky to get anything at all. If I wasn't in a situation then where I needed the money, I would have gladly set it on fire and shot it off a cliff. There were many other problems with the car, but these are the ones I remember most vividly. I'm not kidding when I say this car has had more -and weirder- problems in less than half the time and mileage than my five previous cars combined. To this day, whenever I see a Dart on the roads, I feel a festering ball of nausea in the pit of my stomach. That's how much that horrible car affected me.

To get a vehicle with better gas mileage, I traded my jeep JK with 57 k miles for it. A little over a year later, I wished I had not done so. It’s a fun almost sporty little car to drive and the fuel economy is great. The review would be much more positive except that when the car needed repairs the parts always seemed on backorder. So much so that in the last sixteen months I have been in rental cars of and on for over three months of it. For an economy car, when it runs, it’s roomy exciting to drive and just plain fun, however even with my jeep getting half the mileage it was more reliable and in hindsight well worth the extra expense of the gas.

We purchased the 2013 Dodge dart Lmtd brand new in Dec 2012. Since then we have had two issues with the battery and only recently had to have the entire battery replaced. The Dodge dealership confirmed that it was an internal problem with the battery! Has anyone else had these issues? The car has completed about 26K miles.
