Stan the Man
This is my 10th BMW that I have owned or leased over the past 36 years. I went from a 5 series to 4 7 series to 4 x-5’s. After 122,000 miles on my 2008 x-5, which was the most reliable BMW I have owned, I decided that I needed more safety features. So, I spent over a year researching my next car. I read literally hundreds of reviews on BMWs , Mercedes , Audi, and Cadillac. A lot of my friends have Cadillac XT5’s. I priced one out but did not test drive one. Nice car but just not my type and with all the safety features, the price was within $100 a month less that a 2019 x-3 with a 3 year lease and 36K miles. After pricing the car at 4 different dealerships, including the one I have dealt with for over 30 years, I was shocked that they were the most expensive for my lease, almost $3,000 more. I did not bother to return to the dealership to try to have the price matched as i was very put off that with my dealership loyalty and USAA number plus loyalty points that they were so disinterested in my new business. So, I took delivery of my x-3 3.0 a few months ago. I will admit that I had a tough time downsizing from an x-5 to an x-3 as I always thought of the x-3 as a car that was marketed for women. Now that I have transitioned to my new computer with a car attached , all I can say is how off base my thinking was. My car has every safety feature you could order. I even refused to take delivery until they switched out the non run flat tires that came with it from Bridgestone Duelers to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires. Tire Rack gave the Bridgestone tires a terrible rating while the Michelin’s got the top rating for all season tires. Shame on BMW for trying to deliver such a great car with lousy tires. Needless to say, my car so far has exceeded my expectations. It is almost as long as my dearly departed x-5, rides better, and has so many unbelievable safety features that I read the manual twice and then had 46 questions to have answered when I went back to the dealership a week later for their suggested driver’s course. I am very happy that I pulled the trigger and went with the x3 over an x5 or any other car. I have ridden in a Cadillac xT 5 and test drove the BMW 330 , 340 and rode in X3 4.0. I know I made a well researched out decision. As an aside, my service rep at my old dealership said he had several of his customers relate the same pricing experience they had recently and as I did, leased or purchased their cars elsewhere. I will continue to service my car at my old dealership as their service and rep are excellent. But, I will no longer refer my friends and associates there other than to give them the same feeling of satisfaction when they see how much they can save by comparison shopping. Talk about customer loyalty. Apparently, it means nothing. The downside. My wife who has a 2009 328xi with 37,000 miles and is in almost showroom condition now wants a new 3 series with all the same safety features. At Is have done enough research to make this a short project. In passing I should note I got an elevated t UCB deck because I got non run flats and wanted a spare tire. No regrets.
Could be better
I have owned my X3 for nearly a year now. I enjoy driving it on long trips, the seats are firm, well made and comfortable. I have the Cognac leather with Sapphire metallic paint. It’s a very handsome SUV. Driving around town is another story. I find the twin turbo difficult to gauge when accelerating, it is hurky jerky. Very difficult to control the “sweet spot” for comfortable stop and go driving. Brakes are excellent. Gas mileage is averaging 22.5. Most of our roads are straight, smooth and long from light to light. I went to Vegas a month ago and only averaged 23MPG. This is a disappointment. I have owned many BMWs in the past, and have found MPG to be more than accurate from the window sticker. My other disappointments include the integrity of the build quality. There were three trim areas on the SUV that were delivered loose. One piece on the back fell off. I had a mystery rattle that I had a heck of a time locating...it was above the rear view mirror. It has been in service now 3 times for an engine light. I don’t know if I can buy another BMW, except to feed my ego.

Disappointing..look elsewhere
The performance of this vehicle is pretty good, and at times it does feel like the ultimate driving machine. However, it is far from perfect. Before this car, I wouldn't drive anything but a BMW. I knew that BMW was known for having poor reliability but I never experienced it before this X3. I was already having issues at 1,800 miles. The sunroof cover was rattling, and the M badge fell off of one of my wheels. Apple Carplay was glitchy at first but a phone reboot seemed to help. The digital display screen failed and had to be replaced. The tires (Bridgestone Summer tires) are the worst I've ever experienced. BMW had to replace them at 7,000 miles due to premature wear. My new set of tires had multiple issues as well - never again. I'm a bit disappointed, not because I thought that BMWs were reliable, but having this many issues with a brand new one right off is disappointing. I switched to an Audi that is built in Germany and am so much happier - wish I had started there.

Good Overall except for Loud rolling/humming noise
This is my 4th BMW and the 3rd X3. Overall I was happy with the 2014 & 2017 X3s (AWD). The notable shortcomings were knocking sound at the back especially on uneven road surface, some rattles, overly sensitive parking assist and the power liftgate on the 2017 that doesnot always respond when foot is swiped underneath. The knocking sound was remedied by dealership by inserting some padding in the luggage compartment. This disappeared for a while but subsequently came back at the time the car's lease expiry. I got the 2019 X3 3.0 AWD at the end of April 2019. Overall I find the ride of the car good & better that the 2017 X3. However, subsequently I started to be very disappointed of the unusually loud and very annoying rolling/humming sound. The dealership explained that this is usual for the car. However, in a subsequent comparison drive with the car provided (same year model & same run-flat Bridgestone tires) by the service department of the dealership showed that the service car provided was quieter. I also did a comparison drive against the car of a friend (same model year and same tires) and again noted that my car was a lot noisier. I will be again bringing back my car to the dealership by I seriously doubt that they will be able to remedy this issue. I m considering switching to the GLC 300 or to the Q5 but I will probably wait for the 2020 models. The 2019 X3 also continues tp have an overly sensitive parking assist as it goes into this mode when ones get near a car at the traffic light. Were it not for the loud rolling/humming noise which should be present in a luxury, I would have been very happy with the 2019 X3.

Oh Yes
I have been fortunate to own some nice performance cars in my life...GT Mustang, Jaguar XKE, Porsche 930, Triumph GT6 and some other decent runners. But, overall, with all things considered, performance, fuel economy, insurance cost, interior room, handling and appearance, I would have to say my 2018 BMW X3 M40i is one of the top two. It's great. I get decent mpg around town, about 22-23 and nearly 30 on longer highway trips. It is comfortable and so far, except for,one small rattle, absolutely no problems. Try the rest buy this one.
