Buyer Beware
I've only owned the car for a few months and have had it die on me twice. All 2001 Audis have faulty engine coils, mine have broken twice already and supposedely have now all been replaced with new non-faulty coils. In the process a tow truck ripped off my front spoiler and I fought with them for over two moths for replacement compensation. My dealership was unsympathetic and useless. I bought the car based on reliability and customer service, I have found both to be completely lacking and unsatisfactory. Never buy an Audi without the original warranty remaining. Instead, go buy a Lexus or Acura, that's what I'll be doing next.
bet your life on it
Let me start by saying that I was in a head-on collision just 2 weeks ago and my 2001 A4 performed just as it should have, safely. It is an incredibly solid and safe automobile. All the minor complaints (lame cupholder and small back-seat) I once had about the car have receded into the past. To be able to walk away from a bad accident is the best testament anyone can give for a car.

Unreliable Disaster
Read the reliability reports. Everything in there and more has gone wrong with my Audi. The sludge problems w/ the 1.8T, in my opinion, are the engineering equivalent of a surgeon leaving a scalpel inside you.
one great car
Awesome really fun car...i have a BMW and this Audi....love them both...I will be buying another...I hear the 2004's are even more evolved..
Disappointing
The car breaks down, the dealers can't figure out how to fix them, and Audi can't supply the parts. In addition, the resale value drops like a stone after purchase. Don't do it.
Great traction
The steering with quattro is fantastic - travelling on a wet and rainy I-95 at speed, a wheel cover from an oncoming car, came over the central median - closing speed at least 140 mph. I swerved to avoid a direct hit the car calmly swung right and then back left to avoid the wheel cover and the car on the inside lane without missing a beat - having owned a BMW 540i previously I can safely say that had I been in that car I would not have stayed on the highway ! Also the handling is exceptional in snow conditions - brilliant, cannot say enough good things about the handling of this car.
A perfect blend of sport and luxury
I have owned my A4 for seven-plus years. Like any German car, service isn't inexpensive, but the key is keeping up with regular maintenance. My car just hit 100k miles and it still makes me smile when I turn the key. No major issues. Lots of fun to drive. The quattro AWD system is a dream in snow. I have owned three Audis (2000 A6 Avant; 1997 Cabriolet; this A4) and I loved them all.
Audi A4 Turbo Sedan
Fun to drive. Great handling in tight turns and high speeds, great mileage, interior is very well styled and audio system is good. Beautiful exterior design, and center panel is awesome, glows red when lights are turned on.
28 mpg in town
I love my A4, it handles great and have had no problems. I run 87 octane and regularly get the oil changed (synthetic) I get about 28 mpg in town. Best car I've ever owned.
Highly recommended
I've had my 2001 A4 for a year and a half now, and am still as happy with it as the day I drove out of the dealer's lot. This car is a keeper.
Fun to drive and practical
This is one of the rare fun to drive and practical cars out there. The extra cargo capacity comes in handy when it's time to go to the mountain with the kids...
Too many problems
Bought my 2001 A4 2.8 Quattro last year as a cert. pre-owned. Had to replace the CD player within the first week of having the car. Since then I've gone through 2 more CD players. The electrical system is faulty and just recently I had to replace all the tie-rods which, last year, Audi deemed not covered in the warranty...Thanks Audi. I've dropped over $1500 on top of payments this year on the car. Having to put premium in it is killing me because it only gets 21 mpg, especially when gas prices are $2.50+. Save your time and money. Go get something else.
Super automobile
A great car to drive both in the winter and summer. No problems in the snow and ice. I love to have people test me on the freeway, the turbo will blow them away. this car looks great both inside and out. I love the way the seats feel and the comfort they provide. I don't have anybody to sit in the back so there is plent of room for the kid. Had minor problems with a faulty read from a loose sensor.
60000 Mile failure
I love the driving experience of the A4. The handling is phenomenal and the comfort is excellent. Not to mention the heads that turn when I'm going down the road. The only issue was that after 2 months the engine failed and has to be replaced. It had only 60,000 miles on it. I would not wish a 1.8T engine on my worst enemy. Nor would I ever puchase another Audi.
50k Summary
Well, it's 50k later and this car is still so fun to drive. (I highly recommend the sport package for improved handling and low-to-the-ground stance.) With routine oil changes and TLC, she has held up remarkably well. The engineering is impressive and the styling classic. Some have said reliability is an issue, but that's not what this car is about. Performance, stlying, and design inside and out - that's Audi.
So far so good
I've owned this car for about 8 months, and so far I love it. The driving position is ideal (unlike other reviewers, I love the position of the armrest), and I find the car to be very comfortable for both short and long trips. Not to mention the fact that it is gorgeous! Truly one of the best looking cars on the road. Nothing but good things to say about the service dept so far (hopefully that will stay the same when the warranty runs out later this year)
Excellent
I love this car. In the 3 years I have had it there has been virtually no problems, it gets great gas mileage for a performance car, and it's solid all around. I like it so much I'm going to buy it off the lease cause I won't be able to get the quality of this vehicle for the price range I can get it vs. getting another car.
Buy an Acura instead
Do yourself a favor and buy an Acura or a Lexus instead. This isn't a truly awful car. My Ford Contour was a truly awful car. But this isn't a good car. I have had annoying problems since I drove it off the lot. Everything from the vanity light going out to the wiper blades hopping to the car not starting! The brake squeal is insufferable and is part of the design of the Audi brakes and they won't do anything about it. These problems are not acceptable and downright embarrassing from a $30k car.
'01 have trans problems-still fun 2 drv
I have had the 99 and now the 01 - the 01 has a lot more problems than the 99, expecially a very rough and uncomfortable transmission - also fuel economy is very very bad for this car, average only 17 - maybe because it is so fun to drive and zip around everywhere. Despite these problems, i still do love to drive it, but it will probably be my last Audi.
2001 A4 1.8T FWD
Great car...only wish I had held out for the new body style in 2002. The only problem I have had in the 3 years since I bought it new (knock on wood) was a reoccurring blown front door- speaker. I do not regret not buying the quattro as I do not live in snow- country.
Glenn's Audi Review
This is the best car I have ever owned. I used to own a Mercedes C230 Komprssor, and liked it, but this A$ I like even more. The dealer has been outstanding, as well. I would highly recommend an Audi to anyone.
Fun car to drive!
This is a very comfortable and fun car to drive. I like the feeling of control when driving the car, thanks to the Quattro transmission. I've had only one minor problem with it. An aligment wheel which got covered by the waranty. The sad thing with these luxury cars is the depreaction which is pretty steep. My only regret with this car is its lack of power (1.8T engine). It sometimes feel underpowered. My next car will also be an A4, but this time with the bigger engine V6 or even the S4 if I can afford it.
Not Worth It
I have a '67 Mustang that has less problems!!!. Nothing but electrical problems since I've had it. ABS unit needed to be replaced twice (without a warning light...that's comforting), control box for door locks had to be replaced (couldn't even get in the car!!), most recently, had to have all dashboard electronics replaced after radio froze (couldn't change stations or anything) and dash disply went dead. If you have to have one, lease, and not for longer than the warranty.
I'll Miss Her
I love the car overall. The transmission went out at 4000 miles. Slow off the line.
I can not recomend this Car
56000 miles Failed and paid for by Audi's warrenty: Temp sensor & gauge Steering colum and rack Turn Signal cluster Clock spring Digital display in dash coil pack oil pump oil pick tube this all totaled $4000.00 in repairs that Audi picked up most. This is not uncommon research audiworld.com for the problems others are having. Look elsewhere for a reliable car
Audi A4, great car
I love in Colorado where the quattro is very nice to have. I have just over 45,000 miles on my A4 and it has been very reliable. The only problem I have had is with the driver's side window 'whistling' a bit. After 3 trips to the dealer, it was finally fixed, under warranty. Other than that, I absolutely love the car and plan to purchase it when it comes off of lease in August 2005.
Exceptional
This car is exceptional in most every way. Classic AUDI handling/cornering coupled with the luxurious appointments. What I really like about this vehicle that no one speaks about is the TURBO aspect. It can be changed out with an aftermarket configuration and squeeze out much more performance with ease. It is not unrealistic to get 325+ hp out of this vehicle. Overall I think the AUDI A4 is absolutely beautiful.

awesome car!
An amazing car to own. It still puts a smile on my face quite frequently.
German cars: Love Em!
This has been a great car for us. It is a lot of fun to drive and everyone at the dealerships go above and beyond to service their customers. We've had the car for almost four years now and all that we've had to do is have the oil changed, which is included in the warranty. Owning our first Audi has been a great experience and I often recommend the A4 to others.
New to Audi
Purchased a pre-owned 2001 A4 1.8t Quattro. Sales experience: Best I've ever had. Audi of Mendham, NJ, was fantastic in every respect and exceeded my expectations. Also looked at Infinity I30, Lexus ES300 and Acura TL. Infinity was more luxury oriented but dealership was beyond horrible (Lynnes in Bloomfield, NJ). Lexus was too expensive and the 2002 model made the 2001 look like crap (styling changes). Acura was great but exterior styling for 2001 was bland. The Car: Have to get used to turbo power coming on, but it does. Feels very luxurious, yet sporty enough to keep you "cool". Grips the road with confidence. Small interior can be a problem
A4 Quattro
Extremely capable car. Even with very little tread on summer tires I had very little trouble negotiating a 2 inch snow/ice drive to work recently. Excellent gas mileage for a performance car. Drive train makes even a fat footed driver seem like a pro.
Simply Unmatched
The car is far superior to BMW 3-series cars. It is a masterpiece of German engineering. The car scores far better on power, performance, reliability and ofcourse price.
Great Car
This is not the quickest car out there, but it has great handling and is fun to drive. Lots of great feautres for a reasonable price. Looks great inside and out.
Bling Bling!
This is my first real car, and I couldn't ask for more. I have a huge grin on my face everytime I see a windy road! This car handles like no other. By handling I don't mean Cadi style, I mean it hugs the road. Quattro confindence is a must for a skier.
Not What I Expected
I had high expectations for my Audi A4, and they have been dashed to pieces. I have had the same problem many others have had with engine coils (car broke down completely 3 times this year alone!) My dealership covered the repairs, but the hassle factor was extremely high. I also had to replace door speakers and had a problem with my driver's side airbag. My check engine light is on right now and as soon as I get it back from the dealership I am trading this car in. My mother also has an Audi A4 that she has had much worse problems with (replaced the entire engine twice along with the transmission!) My "Audi Experience" has not been a good one!
Best buy I ever made
I got the car in July 2001 and have not had any problems with it. Features I got are manual transmission, Bose sound system, sports package, winter package and leather interior. Everything was well worth it. Only car I know where the doors all open 90 degrees. How many cars do you know with a FULL-SIZE spare tire just in case and 8 (count 'em, 8!) airbags? Fun to drive in summer and winter. Only regret is that I could not get an S4 Avant!!! BMW owners just don't know what they are missing.
Audi makes great cars
My 2001 Audi A4 1.8T quattro Sedan handles well and is easy to maintain. I only wish there was a little more power with the AWD system. I have no regrets buying this car!
Handles Like a Champ
This car handles like a champ. There is no system in the world better than the Quattro all wheel drive. I cant ger over the power and capability in the rain. The car could use a little more power. But with a chip, it makes it MOVE.
2001 Audi A4 1.8 Turbo: My Supercar
This is the best looking Audi to come out of Ingolstadt. I still have a great looking and very reliable '85 Audi Coupe GT and so I decided on getting another Audi with the latest technology. The Xenon HID headlights are amazing in how well they light up the road ahead as well as to the sides. I get outstanding mileage on the highway (33mpg) yet the motor feels very strong and tight. The seats could offer a bit more thigh support and aren't as plush as in my old Audi but it's still a comfortable ride. The only problem I experienced was the driver's airbag warning light repeatedly coming on despite dealer resets. The fix was a new airbag installed for free .
love it
The car has been very reliable, and I have had no major problems. It handles great; it is fun to drive on twisty roads, and is good in snow as well. Power is very good considering actual displacement of engine, but it isn't as torquey as say a Volkswagen VR6 or a BMW inline 6. Mileage is good -- I get 28 mpg on the highway going 80 mph. Very nice looking inside and out.
My favorite car, ever.
I chose the A4 over the BMW 3-series because you get so much more for your money. I've never regretted it. It handles great, has excellent pickup, and, with the Quattro AWD, I am safe and glued to the road. Fit and finish are tight, and there's a feeling of solidity. I think the 1.8T is one of the best small engines ever made. I've never had a disabling mechanical problem. There was a recall for replacement of faulty coils, but I never had the faulty coils. Reliability has been excellent.
Service center wait times
Although I love my car I would not recommend it to anyone. Last month my window regulator shattered and stuck in the down position. Columbia SC service wouldn't see me for 2 weeks - had to travel 2 x the distance to Charlotte where it took 3 separate trips to fix problem - over a month to fix a window so it would roll up and down also left tape residue ruining tint job. Great car - Bad service
Who are some of these reviewers
I have enjoyed my A4 very much. Can't add much to what other have said. My experience with the coil recall was totally unlike another person has reported. Before I had the coil recall work done, I received multiple letters from Audi USA reminding me to bring in my A4 to have ALL the coils replaced FREE of charge; and if I had already paid to have them fixed, to send them copies of the invoices so they could reimburse me IN FULL.
I dont know why I like Audis, I just do
I bought my 2001 Audi 2.8 almost 1 year ago. It has been a great car. I took it in today because the check engine light came on (becuase the gas cap wasn't screwed back on correctly) Ahhh! Oil changes are about $85 which is a lot, but it's good for 6k miles. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for paying that much for an oil change, but that's how it is. I love having a powerful car. Brakes work great! Almost too well. All my friends love driving my car, it's fun!
Outstanding Car!
I own three Audis: a 2001 A4 2.8Q, a 2000 A6 2.8Q Avant, and a 1997 Cabriolet. All three are wonderful cars, and serve different purposes. The 2001 A4 is great fun to drive, and at 30k miles, I've not had one mechanical problem. Also, the 2.8 engine does not have the coil issues present in some 1.8T engines. The design of the '01 is a classic: clean lines in the Bauhaus tradition. Note: At 75K miles, Audi's can have gasket leaks (my 2000 A6 Avant did), but that's not uncommon for any German performance car. Fit and finish are flawless, and my dealer (Nalley Audi / Atlanta) is first rate. I will own nothing but Audis!
1.8T Bad Engine Design
The car's great when it works, but after all the problems the world knows about with the ignition coils, it also has a bad oil filtration system and timing belt tensioner. Read the bulletin boards for huge repair bills and horror stories of oil pumps seizing and engine belts falling off. Mine went through two oil pumps and found out the valves needed replacing - all of which Audi refuses to pay for. Bad engine, bad company. They tried to make it right when it was small stuff like the coils, but now that it's big engine bills they're stone walling it. These turbo engines can *ONLY* run on synthetic oil. Yet the dealers have strict instructions otherwise on leased cars. Bad.
2001.5 A4
I haven't had any problems with the car other than rear wheel bearings and front tie rod ends.
not so overwhelmed
I think part of the problem is that i had built this car up in my head during the 4 month period i was waiting to receive delivery of it. the 1.8t, although peppy required a chip to satisfy me. my older vr6 put a much bigger grin on my face. other than that. the car has really loosed up quite a bit. which is very disappointing for a $32,000 car with all the tricks and german engineering.
A Good Car, A Strong Car, A Good Choice
A petite car with the power of a bulldozer. It's a car to drive when you want to pass another going uphill, downhill, and, any other way you need to drive safely and quickly; To feel it grip the road on icy, waterey, snowy roads you'll immediately be thankful for selecting a car with AWD- it's an awesome feel of safety, comfort and security.
