Europe is a completely different market from the US and car prices are all much higher than in the US. A VW with an automatic xmission is a sin..... A manual xmission gets better MPG, lasts the life of the vehicle and rarely fails. You are mistaken about the 1996... it goes back a LOT further than that. That 2.0L 8-valve can be traced back to the ORIGINAL watercooled VW rabbitt in 1974. I got quoted $25,620 for Golf 2010 4dr DSG TDI with sunroof and rear side-impact airbag. The problem is that the dealer told me that what i want specifically does not exist in the state. Yep, the new Jetta Sportwagen/Golf is lovely and of the perfect size. Without any explanation, on 05/28/10 VW announced that 2011 Jetta TDI production will be delayed until January 2011. I wonder what's going on? They said the same TDI engine will be carried over, so no major engine change is in the works. The current Sportswagen is the upgraded design. It is the same as the Golf Wagons sold in Europe. Not sure what the new Jetta sedan will be built off of. I like the front end on the 2010 Sportswagen much better than the older model. And they are a good seller for VW. My choice of what VW is currently offering.

Volkswagen Credit's May buy rate lease money factor and residual value for a 36 month lease of a 2010 Golf TDI 4 Door with 15,000 miles per year are .00202 and 55%, respectively. I strongly suspect that VWoA has loaded up the TDIs with the nav system and lots of other goodies because they cannot make a profit selling a base model. Last week I paid a deposit for a 2010 VW Golf TDI, 2DR, MT, grey metallic, with Emlich VW in Denver. Purchase price was MSPR ($23,388) which included cold weather package and car mat options. That is similar information to what our store received yesterday from our regional rep. VW plans to import no more Golf TDI models for the 2010 model year than they did Sportwagen TDI models in 2009. Does it retain its value after 3-4 years like a Civic? Corolla? VW as a brand has a higher retained value than Honda or Toyota. Model specific I can say that TDI retained value for Golf is predicted higher than Civic or Corolla, for the gas Golf I can't say.

I am not sure where you live. In CA the average 2010 Prius is over $29k. The dealer with the largest inventory only had 3 Prius out of 14 under $29k. Making your calculation more like $580 per MPG. Sounds like you made a good buy. The Golf TDI price is about what people were getting a loaded Sportwagen TDI for a few months back. As a comparison, the largest inventory of 2010 Prius in San Diego are priced from $25,980 to $33,400. Most of the inventory is over $31k. Makes the Golf TDI a better buy. Wayne has done amazing things with Gassers and hybrids both. He got close to 40 MPG from a stinking Ford Ranger. I don't think he does the long haul stuff like the Taylors. jpeters1970 I have had a few VWs (late 90's). Seats were HORRIBLE. I'll take my Prius any day over a VW. Have you driven the current VW Golf and Jetta models? Or are you comparing a 2010 Prius to 1990 VW's? VW TDI Great Seats VW has better seats than Toyota, and superior interiors too.

2010 Golf TDI pricing Apologize for the incorrect link earlier, and thanks for providing the correct link. I'm on TDY and my internet connection was terminating soon. Golf TDI is highly contented compared to past Golf TDI trims. Still, it is priced at a substantial premium and I expect the cost of entry to be a problem for non diesel and non VW fans.
