Will it start when the temp is warm? And, Is the CEL on when you try to start but not starting? My 1991 would start when warm, or if I put a drop light against the distributor housing for an hour. My 93 Honda does the in and out of gear and surging also. I have no problem starting it at all. Also, when it does this, it is very sluggish when starting to drive. I have the same problem. For a month if I loosen the gas cap and let the air out it cranks right up. It did this for 1 month and last night it would not crank at all. I went and bought a new gas cap put it on this morning and it fired right up. Maybe try a new gas cap/

I wasn't the one who suggested replacing the ECU, although this could be a possibility. You might try going to the underhood fuse/relay box, and disconnect the BACK UP fuse for 10 seconds, to reset the ECU. Thanks...I finally found it! The service code I am getting is 43...would that cause issues with the computers? I believe it is fuel system issues? If not what do I need to do to correct that? fuel problems
i have a 1990 honda accord EX, and lately it's been giving me problems with telling me how much fuel i have. it'll say i have a 1/4 tank, but won't start unless i get more fuel in the tank first. i never get a light that comes on or a warning, it just won't start. this has left me stranded multiple times. any ideas?

one problem after another...

Steady "S" light, sluggish take-off, and acceleration power failure

Hey Bluesman, sounds like the ignition switch to me. Mine quit on me in town one time,but i was able to get it back home by holding the key about half way between start and run. It's an easy fix with basic tools. Have fun!

my 1990 accord will start when i turn the key, when i let off the key it dies. Sounds like an ignition switch (electrical part, not the lock cylinder) problem. If you hold on to the key, not letting it go all the way back when it starts, can you keep it running? The contacts in the switch get worn down.

Hey Blake My Accord EX 93 still has this problem and I was told it could be the TCM. I replaced TCM unit with a used Ebay bought part and the problem was resolved temporary. I had a starting problem that was fixed just a week or so ago. For a while, it had been intermittent, sometimes starting and sometimes not, then it finally quit entirely. It turned out to be a relay switch that ignites the fuel pump. The replacement component was about $90.00, but the labor was about $250 more (ouch!) When the car will not start, you need to find out what is missing. Spark or fuel? That would at least narrow the possibilities. Have you checked the condition of the transmission fluid? A simple drain and fill (3 quarts of Honda fluid) may help. All Accords of that generation shift a little hard, but if the fluid is old and dirty, some fresh fluid can help.

Whatever you do, don't add any conditioner to the tranny. Back when I had my 88 Accord, I had a chat with a local Import service garage. The guy who ran the shop was a former Honda master mechanic who decided to go out on his own. Some 1990-1993 Honda Accords are known to have this problem. I had a problem with the driver side door not opening and took it to a Honda Dealer, he drilled out the lock and put in a new one. The labor cost was a killer and cost me $400+.

Timing Chain Replacement
I have 1990 Accord with 222k miles on it. I had heard that Honda recommends replacing the timing chain every 90k miles. The previous owner had this done at 90k, I was just wondering if this is necessary maintenance, as it's a bit costly.

For your situation, think of your car as having three pieces. - An alternator, which is to put out energy and put it into the battery. - The battery, which saves the energy that it is given by the alternator, and supplies power to the vehicles circuits, - The vehicle fused circuits. Confusing post. Are you saying that you are having random start problems AFTER your battery was replaced and new wire terminals put on? or are you saying........ You've had random start problems, and when you took it for service they replaced the battery and put on new wire terminals. If it's the later, then that is a reasonable fix for random start problems.

I have a 90 Accord with 178,000 miles that has a engine miss only at idle.The car runs excellent through all rpms otherwise and get good mpgs.i have checked for vacum leaks and have found nothing.Im not sure what else to check or replace,any help with this would be appreciated,Thanks

You might check your EGR valve or the tube going to it for a clog or malfunction.

Problem is it is not in the tires but the drivetrain powering the front wheels - you are getting vibrations transmitted thourgh the half shafts to the front wheels from the 3 cylinder operation. I suspect you have a problem with the active engine mounts not functioning properly to offset those vibrations. Yes, yours is an interference engine. A good mechanic can tell fairly quickly if the belt is broken. However it will take more labor to determine the extent of the damage. How do you know the timing belt broke? A smoking engine would not be a symptom of that. At any rate, yes it's an interference engine, at least by my charts. Even if it is interference fit, that doesn't mean you need a whole new engine. You need to calm down and get some good advice on a)what exactly happened and b) what your alternatives are.
