I am new to the forums. My canyon started this saturday afternoon. Let it cool down drive a quarter mile and the same thing happens. Each time I cleared the code using OBDII and let it set. Eventually the canyon returned home powered by a flatbed with $190. The dealerships can't connect to the recall database provided by GM until 13 Feb. With two people who work and only one GMC ... Well. Just got the truck back from GO GMC repair in Golden Colorado. I think they really fixed it. :) They did replace the BCM (echo skepticism again heard throughout this thread about the efficacy of this), and then found one (or more) broken wires in the wiring harness where it comes through to the driver's door. An initial test showed that the lock/unlock was working 100% correctly, both fro the ... Read More
I've skimmed this thread, but not read every member of the thread (it's long!) ... I'm facing a similar problem with my 2004 GMC Canyon Z71 crew-cab. 1) since 2005, the effective range of the remote lock FOB reduces, some times to mere inches from the cab. Problems historically start about 35F, and if the temp falls below 10F, the remote FOB doesn't work at all. 2) starting this winter, the ... Read More
I should have added that you need to look up the sensor part number in the GM parts manual for a later year. The last time I checked when GM made it available they did not go back and add it to the 2004 and 2005 parts listings. Look for a 2007 or later Colorado / Canyon.
I just googled abs fault and found this forum. I own a 2004 Canyon, it has 65,000 miles and I have done most of the work on the truck. Just recently, my ABS fault light came on and I have experienced the same peddle problem when the light comes on. Just as someone else posted, when you shut off and turn it back on, the light goes out and the ABS ... Read More
I have owned a 2004 Colorado, 2WD, manual, 5 Cly since it was new. It has been a hughe dissapointment. Within the first 20K miles it experienced several ignition problems which ultimately led to a faulty harness in the low speed controls (it was severed somehow). About the same time the airbag warning light came on and sometimes went off. It too was a broken harness. The clutch was replaced becuse ... Read More
Thanks for the information. I'm was also guessing that the failure is in the front sensors. I have not pulled or looked at them yet. I have a 2WD so the half shafts are not a problem. My scanner does not do ABS so I was hoping to get it scanned to tell me what side to look at. After my wasted trip and money with GM getting it scanned I ... Read More
You've probably long since resolved your issue, but in the event others need an answer, I note that the ABS sensors in the front hubs are very tempermental. I replaced my rotors and had to remove the hub from the halfshaft. The sensor is press fit into the hub in the hole where the halfshaft installs. I dinged the sensor putting it back together-barely scratched the metal. But I ended up ... Read More
Well at about 46,000 miles I was having the drivers window/lock/FOB problem, and that's when I found these forums... Now, at 56,000 miles, 2 days ago I hit the brakes, ABS kicks in(for no reason), and then "ABS FAULT" comes up... Much like my previous problem, it's good to see I'm not the only one... I haven't taken it to the deal yet, and probably won't for 2 more weeks at ... Read More
Hearing a loud click when turning knob from cold to hot and back. A/C works great, but no heat. There is tension until the click, then after, there is no tension. Does anyone have any knowledge of the inner workings of the climate control area for a 2004 GMC Canyon? is this an easy fix for myself or do I need to get an entire new control system? Thanks for any ... Read More
I have a 2004 GMC Canyon with 80500 miles on it. I recently had to put in the shop for a total of close to 45 days. During this time Haselwood GM Supercenter was suppose to fix a factory bulletin regarding the head on my truck. After being without my truck for almost a month I got the truck back and it ran rougher than when I put the truck in ... Read More
I have a 2004 Colorado with 58,000 miles on it. It runs very well, yet it clatters terribly at idle and when i throttle up. I have not had my check engine light come on at all since the last time i brought it to the dealer. The last time it had a miss, and the light came on. But now there is no light and plenty of clattering. Some one ... Read More

I have a 2004 GMC Canyon 4 dr and I have experenced this problem. I am in Minnesota so its cold here 5 months out of the year. I did some trouble shooting and this is what I found on my vehicle. My problem was in the drivers door control assembly. I have a schematic of this assembly. I took it apart and checked for water damage and it looked good. ... Read More

I have a 2004 Colorado 5-cyl. w/46000 miles, and am having the same problems you described. I was told yesterday that the head is on back order from GM, and is not expected until March 1st. Does this seem like a reasonable wait time? As you experienced, the cost is not coming out of my pockets, but the inconvience is. This is not my first GM product, but this is the ... Read More
Got a 2004 Canyon 5-cyl. w/ 41000 miles on it. The check engine light came on and it feels like it's running on 3 cylinders. Took it to the dealer and they said that there is a problem with the valves. The entire head and valves needed to be replaced at a cost of $3200. The warranty expired so basically I would have to pay for the repairs. However the service ... Read More

You could have a bad gauge, or a problem in the wiring harness between the fuel sender in the fuel tank and the gauge. Bad grounding in the circuit will cause erroneous readings too.
i have the same problem on my 05 canyon I5 crew 4x4, dealership put some sort of cleaner in it to see if that would fix it, it didnt. have to bring it in next week. any fix for yours??.
Ive bought it the first year it came out. Since ive gotten it the most major problem ive had is the fuel gage. Its never read properly. When im on low fuel and say put in 15 dollars of fuel it goes down directly down to low fuel. Ive took into the dealer they have replaced the fuel senor twice and still hasnt fixed the problem. Anyone have any ideas?
(I have had my brake light switch go out TWICE already since I've owned this hunk of junk Colorado--funny, now theres a recall!!) General Motors Corp. is recalling about 400,000 pickups due to defective brake lights. The Shreveport GM plant makes the three models affected: the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon from the 2004-2006 model years and the 2006 Isuzu i-280 and i-350. GM said some vehicles may permanently lose brake-lamp ... Read More
A rear main seal leak is serious and with your low miles, looks like your truck wasn't assembled correctly. My 2004 Crew 4WD has been solid (almost 28k miles in just over 2 years.) So, what brings you to this forum? Sounds like you had a bad day and just want to complain.... Owned a lot of vehicles over the last 30 years; domestic plus Toyota, Subaru and Volvo. I feel your pain, I was a recent owner of a 2004 GMC Canyon and hated that truck. I thought it looked like a cool truck, but between the touchy brakes ( that they can't fix) the squeaks and wind noise I had enough. You might want to think again. I just unloaded a 2004 Canyon SLE and bought a 2005 4 x 4 Toyota Tacoma. You can't even comapre the quality of a GMC to the Toyota. The GMC is very poorly put together.
Hi, It's me again with tthe 2004 Canyon. I had wind noise on the passenger side door that drove nuts too. GMC fixed it by putting white powder all over the weather stripping to find the leak. It would have been nice of them to clean it off before they returned it back to me. Three months after I owned the Canyon I noticed the driver door part that hold the ... Read More
I just got rid of 2004 Canyon 2 wheel drive 5 cyl. I hope yours is better than mine The squeaks drove me crazy and the interior is not up to par. Your water is coming in from the cowel area under your wipers. My truck had the same problem. I know it is very frustrating, but they can fix this problem. They need to caulk the body seem under the wipers. I hope this helps. My dealer was great about this problem, they had a water leak specialist.
I have a GMC Canyon with 1200 miles on it and it has been at the DLR 3 times now for the same problem Water leaking into the drivers side floor area. Also had a problem with the Rear DS window motor replaced twice. It is now part of the NJ Lemon Law GM has been contacted.
I'm glad you folks generally seem to think the Canyon is a good buy and are happy with your purchase. I ordered one in January 2004 and can't get it. I've heard various songs and dances about WHY it can't be built but the whole thing is getting quite ridiculous. Paint, (ordered indigo blue) tooling, (extended cabs), sliding rear windows, transmissions for extended cab auto 4X4's, even "the vehicle has too ... Read More

A nearby GMC canyon dealer got their first Canyon in and called me to take a look (I had stopped by a few weeks earlier to inquire about the Canyon). I am not a GM fan but this is an interesting truck so I thought I would take a look. The vehicle I saw was a basic extended cab with the I-5 engine. It was fairly trimless, having just arrived (didn't ... Read More
This coming year should be interesting for midsize trucks, with GMC/Chevy, Dodge, and Nissan all coming out with new or greatly changed machines. I personally think an I-5 will be fine. I'm hoping for an American alternative to the Tundra (current smaller version). It surprises me a little that the I-6 in the TrailBlazer isn't an option, surely one more cylinder isn't THAT big a size difference. Pity we have to ... Read More
I agree with some of the other comments posted here and also had a few of my own. first, Chevy's styling doesn't really appeal to me in any shape or form but I would consider buying GMC model since I really like this truck in general.
