S40'd Out
I've owned my S40 since March of 2000. Since owning it I've replaced the brakes every 10,000 miles give or take a few, the bulbs are constantly burning out, the front cup holder blocks the stereo, I get poor gas mileage, and it seems to be in the shop all of the time. On the upside, the seats are comfy for a car it's size, and it has a peppy engine, and it's relatively fun to drive. Priced with options, it can run fairly expensive. Sorry Volvo, you need some work on this little one.
A Mistake
One thing after another. I have had the care for 2 years, and have spent over $3000 on repairs. Every time I think I'm done, something else comes up. Like everyone else, the headlights burn out fast. Looks like most people say their S40 is fast, but mine is sluggish and I can't figure out how the Turbo works. It seems random. I just had to replace the an axle and all motor mounts ($1900). Bad sensors. Check engine light will not go off... Replacement parts are expensive and hard to find. I am selling it, regardless of my loss, and buying a new Civic.

volvo s40 review
I was so sad to read all the bad reviews of the volvo s40's. My 2000 s40 has been wonderful! I have changed the oil, brakes, tires and battery and that is it!! This car has been great to me! My car has 95,000 miles and still runs great!
New Mom disappointed to give up Volvo
Up until the day I had to put the infant carrier into the backseat, I loved my S40. It's stylish, peppy, and comfortable. Unfortunately, the car is too small to handle a carseat. The front seats have to practically be moved all the way up to accomodate it. My husband feels like he's driving a "go-cart" with the way he squashed in. We did have continuing trouble with the check engine light but a recall has seemed to correct that issue. The radio's reception is poor also. I have had it replaced once and this has not cleared up the issue.
Excellent Road/City Car
Our S40 experience is quite good. The car really handles tight city driving with great maneuverability, and responsiveness, then on to the freeways with no problems. It's got solid handling, good in all types of weather Yeah, the check engine has come on sometimes when I started the engine, then goes off after awhile but nothing to obsess about and is being fixed by Volvo.
