Fun, but not the quality expected
The S40 is excellent with road perfromance, but the continuous maintenance really takes away from the fun. This car, in 2 years, has been in the shop more than any other car I've owned. Very disappointed - 2 brake sets, four new headlamps($15.00 each), malfunctioning engine maintenance light, stuck cup holder (that's useless) and that's not all. Good car for people with lots of money and free time to spend in the shop. I hang on to it because it is a pleasure to drive.
Just thought you should know
Ok, right to it: Cup holder sticks, CD can't be used when using cup holder, radio/cd lights are out, arm rest is cheap and a nusance (pops down with the slightest touch and hits drink in cup holder), head lights go out all of the time, dash board reflects on windsheild making it hard to see when the sun is out, paint job was poor, rear locks stick. Maybe the design has changed in 8 years.

152,000 miles and counting
hello there Volvo world I bought my new Volvo in Sept 1999...its an S40 2000. It had only 2 miles on it and now I have over 152K! Yes...the only mjor repair was new engine mounts 5-6 years ago and a new alternator in July 2008. Im on my 3rd set of tires. The interior is still mint condtion and runs excellent. I am now obsessed to see how many miles I can get out of this car.
Steady if unspectacular.
2.5 yrs and no major downtime....still very peppy....a little bland to look at maybe....stereo could be lots better.
Short of Expectations
I thought when buying the S40 that I was stepping up to a luxury automobile that would cross over into the service provided etc. I definitely thought wrong. The buying and service experience I had with my second car (an Infiniti) was far more enjoyable than the Volvo experience. Owning my Volvo was a similar experience to my experiences owning a Honda which is not what I thought I was getting into. Probably will not own or lease another Volvo. Looking back I should have gone for the Infiniti G20 instead although the car has been "OK".
