S40 Volvo Desires
If you like small cars, this is an excellent choice. Drink holder in front is about as convenient as reaching for the one in the back. Option pricing puts this car way into stratosphere for what you get
Volvo.............NOT!
I've owned this car for over a year and had to replace the brake pads twice. I've just about experienced every negative comment that is written in the reviews: from replacement of bulbs, wind noise, rattles, brakes, engine lights, etc. It is a great car in many ways, but the reliability is horrible. Although the S40 is cheaper than most of the foreign cars on the market when compared to BMW, Audi, MB etc..the cost of repairs and regular maintenance can be astronomical once the warranty expires. I would definetly not suggest this vehicle to anyone.

Excellent Road/City Car
Our S40 experience is quite good. The car really handles tight city driving with great maneuverability, and responsiveness, then on to the freeways with no problems. It's got solid handling, good in all types of weather Yeah, the check engine has come on sometimes when I started the engine, then goes off after awhile but nothing to obsess about and is being fixed by Volvo.
I do have a choice
When I purchased the car it was shared that I would only pay for oil changes and everything elso was covered. Not true as I have come to learn as I open my check book one more time! I have had a number of rattles, that have never been fixed, and I need to book my service appointments weeks in advance as the dealer has no loaners, it was even suggested once that since I worked near my dealer I arrange for a coworker to pick me up, something I did not appreciate.
Lemon
Ive had the car for two years and only have 9,000 miles on it. Saying that you would figure it would be in good shape, wrong. This is the list of my problems so far... lights, seat, speaker, cupholder, tires, stalling, faulty breaks at 6,000 miles, a new break problem now, gear shift sticks, wipers.... the list goes on. I have one more year on the lease and think Im gonna get rid of it even thought I will loose money. This is a lemon, it has been in the shop sooooo many times. Save yourself and by something else!!!!!!!
