Used 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Consumer Reviews
I got a Lemon
I had my 2021 Cross Sport SE Premium 14 months before I traded it in. I love the Cross Sport, I miss it, but I think my particular vehicle was a lemon not necessarily all Cross Sports. I love driving it. It was comfortable, and I personally think it is the most gorgeous car on the road, but the issues... The first issue I had was the strut rattle. When I took it to the dealership, they said they couldn't find anything wrong. I persisted with another visit and they had to replace a part of the strut, which fixed the rattle. The second issue I had was with the crash avoidance system. The first time it engaged was not a situation as I was far enough back that I could have avoided the collision, but it engaged and almost killed the motorcycle cop behind me. One thing is for sure, this system defies the laws of physics! I turned the collision avoidance system off so it would not do that again. With the system off. It engaged twice in a 1 week period and immediately after the 2nd incidence the brakes were making a grinding noise. Before I could get it to the shop, the car turned itself completely off at a red light with the error that the door was open. It took opening and shutting the doors several times to get to where I could get the car in park to get it started again. Fortunately I had the oil changed with full point inspection to prove that I had not been riding the brakes. The service department refused to believe the anti collision system could cause the damage to the rotors and I had to fight to get VW to pay for replacing them. The only thing that saved me from having to pay for the replacement is that inspection 2 weeks prior. The electrical issue was a sensor. I had to take it back to the shop a few months later because I was still having issues with the door sensor. This last time, time number 4, was the same door sensor issue. Along with the door sensor replacement, the wiring harness in the door had to be replaces, which they now think was the issue causing the sensor to continue to fail. 4 times was enough for me to get out while the getting was good. I do think the issues I was having was that particular car and I would have gotten another Cross Sport had they had the same or step up from mine but they didn't. Oh, there is also the horrible gas mileage, but it's a V6 so I expected that.

Mixed feelings
I just bout an r-line Volkswagen cross sport atlas v6 with front wheel drive. I test drove both the 4 motion and front wheel drive but honestly for the large price increase I couldn’t justify the large price increase especially with the extra mark ups Volkswagen has added on top of the window sticker price tag due to the chip shortage. I ended up paying an extra 2400.00 on top of the 43,000 window sticker tag price which I think is ludicrous. The color combination and looks of the interior of my vehicle are very unique and beautiful. The exterior is very Audi inspired. The cabin is the largest suv that I’ve ever sat foot into including the front seats , rear seats and especially the large trunk. People who are 6’5 and taller will have no problems at all with leg room when compared to any other suv on the market. If you need a large trunk for luggage the cross sport is very large in fact I cannot fully reach all of the trunk even at 6 feet tall. Some negatives are why make such a sporty vehicle design with such a horrible sluggish v6 engine. I test drove the v6 with 4 motion and the acceleration was even worse from a dead stop. My prior vehicle was a grand Cherokee v8 and a 2016 Kia cardenza v6 both which much stronger acceleration. The acceleration does greatly improve in sport mode at least which is the only way I drive this vehicle daily. The other biggest negative that I have is the horrible sound system for a 43,000 suv. It has no bass and the volume even at the max setting doesn’t compare at all to the Kia product or jeep products. The sound even on my r-line upgraded model was so bad that I literally just added an after market subwoofer with all new door speakers and amplifier. So for me to spend an additional $1,000.00 should help you to understand just how horrible the system is especially if you listen to rap music or heavy metal music or r&b. The ride in the vehicle is great especially considering that the vehicle doesn’t come with air suspension. The seats are very large and provide great comfort for all sizes including larger frame occupants. The entertainment console particular the wireless apple car play and wireless phone charging is a positive game changer. It’s so nice to have all the features mirroring from your phone to the vehicle without the clutter of phone cords. Believe me once you experience the wireless apple CarPlay you will never ever go back to the old cord method. The panoramic large sunroof is large and to my surprise is tinted to provide the right mix of sunlight into the cabin. One thing you will notice immediately is just how quiet this vehicle is. I have gotten out of the vehicle a few times and forgot that the vehicle was still running , thankfully the dashboard alerted me to turn off the ignition. Overall this is a lot that you get for the money regardless of whether you get the 7 seater atlas or the 5 seater cross sport atlas. I reviewed several vehicles from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mazda CX-9, Toyota Highlander , Toyota 4 runner , Kia telluride and non had the upscale looks and fee as the vw cross sport. I added the 5 year 150,000 bumper to bumper extended warranty since I drive around 30,000 miles a year just in case I run into any mechanical issues down the road. My prior vehicle was a 2018 jeep v8 grand Cherokee summit which was a wonderful vehicle even at 70,000 miles. So just to recap the highlights are great Audi inspired exterior views, great ride, largest in my opinion deep trunk space, most leg room in all rows vs anything priced under $60,000.00, great technology and safety features. The negatives are very sluggish v6 engine, and the worse sound system I’ve ever heard in my 23 years of driving. Even my old Buick’s from the 90s Honestly sounded better this.

Spacious Vehicle with Beautiful Unique Styling
I purchased this vehicle in November 2020 and I am very happy with my decision. I have the 2.0T AWD engine which drives very smooth and has enough power for driving around town. Great SUV for big and tall people or anyone would prefer a spacious cabin.
Love this car
I got the top of the line model and I love it. The driving experience is luxurious and similar to Audi (which I normally buy/lease). The design of the car is very thoughtful and while the car is big, it drives small and relatively quick, note I do own the 3.6 V6 and didn’t test drive the smaller engine. The other car in the house is an Audi Q5 and I always choose to drive the VW Atlas cross sport. I would agree with the other reviews that the fuel consumption is relatively inefficient but I don’t drive much so it mattered less to me. I would truly recommend anyone to take this beauty for a spin.

love the design, hate the problems!
I purchased my 2021 ATLAS Cross Sport V6 in Sept 2021. So far the car has cut off while waiting in line at a red light and the eco was off ! Took it to dealership 2 times , they couldnt find anything wrong. They asked me did I have my door open . I said no. They said I forgot to turn off the eco , but I didnt, and I told them even if I did, the car would not just completely turn off and show a message on the console that I needed to manually restart. Their answer for this issue was to video it happening! That's safe, play with camera while driving.! Then I reported that the crash alert would randomly turn on for no reason,, they said that the sensors were very sensitive and red lights could be causing this. Next , I entered my car at night and the auto lights was turned on like it had been since I bought it , but when I started the car, my dash was completely black , and the only thing that lit up was the red indicators lines for the fuel, temp etc.. I finally had to turn the lights from auto to on, and everything lit up. The next day , I turned my lights back to auto and that night everything worked fine. My emergency brake will randomly turn on as well. Brakes sound like they are grinding sometimes, and when I accelerate from a stop light, stop sign etc.. the car will act like it doesnt want to switch gears, it sort of lurches. I decided to write this review because today, I did forget to turn my eco off and when I approached a red light , the car never stopped running like its supposed to . I did go ahead and start my phones video to catch it doing this. And to top it off, winter is coming soon and the dealer said my floor mats are still on back order! I love the way this car looks but I hate that I cant enjoy driving it!

Stay Away
This car has caused me nothing but issues. I’ve had the car for 1 month and a half. It’s been in the shop for nearly 4 weeks. I’ve had nothing but major issues. Car stalling out, push to start not working, car automatically being put into neutral while sitting at a light and car hard shifting when I get off the gas. Seems like that was a transmission. They’ve ordered parts etc. I WILL NEVER BUY VOLKSWAGEN AGAIN.

DO NOT BUY!!!!!!
Although this vehicle is sharp in looks it sucks! Parking brake, lane assist, and park assist came on. Alert that my car is running came on - of course it's on as I'm driving. Windows rolled down by themselves. Doors would unlock except for the drivers side which meant I had to climb in from passenger side. Doors would not lock/unlock at times from the touch sensor. Collision alert came on with no need as nothing was in front of me. As stated before of windows coming down by themselves they then wouldn't even go down when I needed to. Radio would not turn up. We unfortunately bought this and it will be the LAST VW we will buy.

Best SUV I’ve ever owned
I’ve had two Acura MDXs, two Honda Pilots, a GMC Acadia, a Dodge Durango, and a Ford Expedition. The VW Atlas Cross Sport is the best over all. Great luxury SUV

Very “buggy”
I’ve been a Honda owner/lover for decades. Wanted an SUV and was considering the Passport but wasn’t feeling the look of. Saw the Cross Sport and loved it… It’s one of the hottest-looking SUVs I’ve seen. A friend who had a Passat told me great car but expensive to fix… classic German over-engineering. Had a BMW that ran me $3K/yr in repairs. Anyway, decided to lease Cross Sport for term of coverage (33 months) - this would make sure any issues were covered by VW. Outta the gate, little issues - foot sensor on rear hatch never worked correct (VW dealer concedes it’s an issue but no solution). Then the air bag sensor - twice to dealer to have “fixed” (bandaid). Both times sensor came back in as soon as I left dealer. NOW there’s an official recall but the parts are not available from VW yet. Infotainment system: Function buttons work/don’t work. Dash/interior lighting works/doesn’t work. Intermittent electronic issues are a [non-permissible content removed] to diagnose/fix so I have to live with the inconvenience of repeatedly taking to dealer (40 mi RT) w/ issues never being resolved… AND they do not offer rentals while yours is in shop (unlike Honda) so I can’t leave with for thorough inspection b/c I need car to get to work. The car is gorgeous - roomy, cool, stylish and plush inside but the aggregation is over-the-top. I have the V6 and the gas mileages sucks but I anticipated that. Can’t wait until lease ends so I can find another car! SADLY, I CANNOT RECOMMEND. SERIOUSLY CONSIDER SOMETHING OTHER THAN A VW. Dealer service not good, Manufacture’s support non existent! Poor service, poor support, spotty (poor) quality.
Nothing but issues so far
I bought this car with full confidence that I would completely love it. Since getting it in early December, my brand new car has been in the shop for over a month for the engine light already being on and a fuel sensor issue. I receive it back and two days later it happens again. Less than a week later my car is once again having issues and the key will not connect or let me auto lock it from the outside. They replaces the key battery and that was not the issue. Another system failure. Corporate has been beyond helpful but I feel like I made a massive mistake buying this car. Will go back to the dealer tomorrow to get fixed once again. I had better luck with my Jeep Wrangler.. and who says that!

Should be called the VW Junk Box
This is hands down the worst vehicle I have ever owned and it is accompanied by the WORST customer service by VW service centers and VW reps. It lives in the shop. Recall after recall and electrical problems. Stay away. It looks beautiful but don’t let that sway you.

Gave it two stars because it’s a beautiful looking vehicle. I was so inspired by the style let’s look and the upgrades that I got in my Atlas Cross Sport Premium. I drove six hours north just to get it because there wasn’t any in the state. I was so excited to find one and bring it home. Within one week my audio stopped working. Tried all different combinations with wireless and USB connection and such. Connected to the Apple play I could get my messages and phone calls but couldn’t play my music. Brought it into service they couldn’t figure out what was wrong they try to do a hard reset and reset up my phone. System works for about one day and then I have no music. I did the upgrade in the premium package For the Fender sound system and the hands-free with the Apple Pay feature. So it’s been 60 days since I’ve had the car and it’s been in service twice. I have an appointment for the second time for them to look at the audio. The day before I was supposed to go in I was driving on interstate 95 my EPC light came on. Turned out to be a fuel injector failure. So I was able to limp into the dealership north of me. They had the car for five days. But the main reason prior to that was for the audio issues. They never addressed it on the service report. They said they didn’t know what was wrong. And blamed it on my phone. I see on the forms all over the place that people are having trouble with the audio not having volume. Now if I try to trade and I will take a $10,000 hit. I’ve been in contact with corporate and they’re trying to work with me. I don’t know what it’s going to be outcome. I have had two technicians at two different Dealerships tell me that the Atlas has chronic issues ever since the design of 2018. After having such a bad experience in the last 60 days and the research I have done since, I would’ve never purchased this car. I wish I could get rid of it and get something different. It’s useless to me if I can’t play my music. It doesn’t work wirelessly or with USB. It is truly a shame.

Run away from this vehicle!!
Purchased in May 2020 and it’s needed a new steering rack, new sway bar links, new AC Schrader valves, 3 air bag modules and a new transmission after two separate leaks all in under 10,000 miles. Other owners have reported very similar issues. Look elsewhere as there are much more reliable vehicles at this price point.
lots of space
very roomy vehicle that easily accomodates my 6 foot 3 inch frame

Spiffy SUV
Excellent handling and very comfortable. The 4 cylinder turbo is great but use premium fuel for much better performance. Great styling and huge amount of room. No problems after 1:year..Love it! After over two years, I am still very happy with this vehicle. Reliability has been excellent with only a software update needed. Excellent amount of room for an older person with mobility issues.

Nice ride for very tall people
I brought the Cross Sport simply because at 6’8 tall there were no other two row SUV’s I could fit in. The car rides nice and has adequate power for a turbo 4. I love all the technology and it’s pretty easy to learn how everything works. My only complaint is the radio. I think VW should’ve made the Fender audio an option. I love my music and the radio is below average. Other than that I’d highly recommend this car.

Volkswagen Sucks
I brought got this car back in April 2021 and my first issue is that the collision feature engaged when it was nothing in front of me and thank goodness not in back of me either because it stopped abruptly. The car has shut down on me at a red light. The final straw for me to bring the car in for service is when the car windows were coming down by itself and you could not bring them back up. Plus this really loud beeping sound was going off every time I was at a complete stop. The driver contact switch indicator light and the electronic parking brake sensor kept coming on. I honestly did not feel safe in the vehicle. The sales department was amazing but the servicing department sucks. I mean sucks sucks. I have yet to receive a initiated phone call from them not one. Its amazing when I wanted to purchase the vehicle I could not get them to stop calling me or emailing me now its crickets when I need service. That alone confirmed why I would never buy Volkswagen again. I took it in on October 1st and it is now November 2nd and still my car is not ready because of some part is not in yet. The loaner car they gave me the Tiguan sucks too! Feels like a toy. It cut off on me too and whatever sensor they have on the car I can't change lanes gracefully without feeling some type of resistance. Its some feature they have to make sure you stay with in the traffic lines.

4.5 Star Rating….But I do love it
From the moment I first saw the Cross Sport, I loved the look. It’s close cousin is the Audi Q8, which I would take in a heartbeat, but for 80K? No thanks. I bought my 2021 SEL R-Line when it was 3 months old and already traded in. Only had 7K miles and literally spotless. I had done my homework and knew about the lackluster acceleration, gas mileage and the sub-optimal sound system. But that’s only part of the story. The 3.6L engine is powerful enough to tow 5000 pounds with ease. I have towed 2 cars on trips greater than 500 miles and nearly forgot they were back there. I have also taken long trips and and averaged almost 30 mpg at 75mph despite the manufacturer saying it would average 23 highway. The German engineering allows this SUV to feel nimble enough that maneuvering around the horrendous traffic of Atlanta is very doable. I have not had to bring it in for service until this week when suddenly, dashboard lights came on, parking break would apply as I can to a stop and the window would drop down about 4 inches. Turns out it is a door harness recall that they repaired quickly. I have also had my sound system shut off which is very annoying but holding down the off button for 10 seconds will do the trick. I did the satellite upgrade when prompted and it has not happened since. The Cross sport is a smooth-driving vehicle. I have driven 800+ miles straight multiple times and never felt road-weary when I reached my destination. That is almost impossible to do these days. The cargo space is excellent and the panoramic roof is amazing. The ACS truly feels like a luxury SUV. On the 2 occasions when friends drove my SUV, both called me while driving and said “Jeezus dude, this thing is awesome!!”. VW has worked hard on their reliability ratings. I would say they are going in the right direction but this is a fairly new line of SUV for them so I am sure there are bugs to work out. I have noticed that even the negative reviews never complain about driving this SUV. It’s a great truck that all the owners feel proud to own.

Pleasantly surprised
I leased VW Cross sport back in 2021 and I will be completing 3 years now in May. I plan to buy out my lease because we are extremely pleased by this cars performance, sturdiness, and overall ownership experience till now. Touchwood I have had not one issue with this car unlike all the negative comments I have noticed in social media. I use this car for city commute for most part and occasionally take it for long trips. I like the V6 sound, there is some turbo lag but I have got used to it and it does not bother me and I can feel the difference when I drive my wife’s CX9, which simply zooms past without a lag. Overall I recommend Atlas Cross sport and plan to keep it for 2 more years with me.

Jerky ride quality with brake noise
I leased this vehicle, the 4-cylinder turbo SE with tech package. It does not come with memory seat option. Less than 1 year with about 9000 miles, brakes started making grinding noise with any level of moisture on the pad. Dealership said there is nothing to be done because the pads are still new. Worst for me is its very jerky ride quality. It’s definitely not a soft ride, but it’s not a hard ride, either. It’s just very disturbingly jerky going over any irregular surface. Most time, rolling start keep the transmission on first gear which results in jerky acceleration, and accelerating around the corner is also jerky due to incorrect gear selection (too low gear). Also, the passenger side wiper arm angle is wrong which causes even a brand new wiper blade to stutter when going up, but the dealership said the angle was fine. (Seriously?) I cannot wait to turn this in at the end of the lease. The only good quality about this vehicle is the safe feeling from inside due to its size and the thick sheet metal.

Get it for the style, but nothing more
I love the car, got it in white with the black interior. It’s a beautiful vehicle that feels commanding on the road and has PLENTY of interior space. The interior is a let down with cheap plastic everywhere and a smallish screen for the size of the dash, but the whole car feels like a tank, very solid. It also drives like a tank, huge and slow, but confident. Like I said I love the car, but 80% of my love comes from the way it looks especially in R-Line trim.

Beautiful design. Surprisingly nimble and surprisingly quick. No it’s not a race car and no it’s not an off-road vehicle. It’s a street designed SUV and it’s one of my most favorite vehicles i’ve ever owned. Volkswagen not one out of the park with the atlas cross sport.
