The best car you could ever hope for

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
I had the pleasure of owning a 2017 Alltrack for six years, and I can say with full conviction that it was my dream car. The handling was superb, sporty tight steering in curves, and the all wheel drive system never faltered in bad weather. It sipped gas when on the highway, the highest I ever got was 38 mpg on long drives (which I think is very impressive for a turbo-charged gas engine … powering all four wheels). It was a little thirstier in city traffic, often only reaching 22 mpg on short stop & go traffic. But in an average mixed commute, I would often get 30-33 mpg.
I also loved the exterior styling. Volkswagen really nailed the restrained sophisticated look of this car. I had the SEL trim with every possible option and the creature comforts were incredible! Very comfortable seats, responsive collision avoidance systems, killer Fender Audio stereo, and impeccable interior build quality and fit and finish.
Cargo space was also insane. I was able to fill my Alltrack to the brim for several moves and it was always surprising how much stuff I could actually fit in it each time.
The only bad things I could say about this car is that, like many reviews state, the rear seats are rather snug, and would likely only be best for dogs, children, or full-sized adults for shorter trips.
Additionally, I did have a few unexpected repairs with my time with my Alltrack. A new fuel injector harness needed at ~60,000 miles, ($375), two gaskets replaced at 95,000 miles ($850), and lastly, and most concerningly, a new rear differential after mine spontaneously and seemingly unusually failed at 95,000 miles ($7,400!). The VW mechanic I worked with said that he saw the same problem of a spontaneously failing rear differential once before on another Alltrack, but insisted it was a very rare thing to happen, even though he was unable to find a reason to explain why it suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure out of the blue.
Even with that $7,000 bill, I still paid to have it fixed because that is how much I loved this car! No matter how mundane or short the drive was, my Alltrack always made it fun and made me think about how lucky I was to have a car like it. Tragically, mine was totaled in an accident when a teenager was texting and hit me after running through a stop sign, only 4 months after getting the rear differential replaced.
I really wish VW, or even another brand, would make a vehicle of this quality again. But sadly, I doubt that there will be another affordable sporty wagon in the near future with the current trends in the US car market.
If you either have an Alltrack, or have the opportunity to get an Alltrack, I’d say get it! This car will definitely put a smile on your face and leave a lasting good impression. I know that I will be missing my Alltrack for many years to come.
