2023 Chevrolet Traverse
Be aware the V6 will NOT be available after 2023!! 😒 So I had to move my purchase up a year and miss out on the Z71 option. At least I can add taller tires and skid plates later.
I'm trading a 2015 CX-9 V6 AWD which I absolutely love, but it has high mileage and it's just time to move on. I wouldn't touch a 4 cyl CX-9 or a turbo.
I have test driven a few of these Traverses over the last … month and will pick up my 2023 AWD tomorrow from Hendrick.
These are my observations so far ...
The Stop/start which I hated in 2019, has evolved to almost acceptable. 2019 GM had the worst stop/start and NO way to shut it off.
- Now, at a stoplight, you're no longer pummeled with hot air! Yay. As soon as I turned the AC on, the motor started up.
- There is now a stop/start override switch!
- Stop/start is no longer super aggressive
- Stop/start now seems to require an extra hard press of the brake pedal to engage.
Moving on...
-The digital part of the instrument cluster is subpar. It's similar to Camry, but I like the one in my friends Camry better. Just not enough info available on GM screen at one time.
- Analog Speedometer is VERY hard to read. It's gray on white!???
I prefer to see instant gas mileage or tire pressures, but forced to use the Digital speedometer.
- When you set cruise control it adds a 2nd Gray needle to the analog speedo which I also find confusing.
INTERIOR
I prefer cloth to pleather, so any complaints about not being luxurious enough probably don't apply to me.
Steering wheel is now leather wrapped, a step up from bare plastic of yore.
I found the seats comfortable, but they don't get hot on high.
I wish heated steering wheel would be included with heated seats (logical), but ALL OEMs seem to require you to buy a $2500+ technology package to get heated steered wheel!
I never saw the need for cooled seats. In the Premium that I drove, I was shivering. I turned off the AC and asked the Sales associate what do I do now?? He said the seat cooling was on high. OMG, if that's your thing you'll love it. But not for me. 😜
TRACTION
While making a UTurn, I punched it and the front was sliding all over the place. I realized it was in 2WD. I've never seen an AWD vehicle with a 2WD setting! 🤯 I set it to 4WD and tried the UTurn again. Still got some significant wheel spin, though this time from all 4 wheels! Either it has loads more power than my cx-9 OR the GM AWD system vectoring is not very good. I am unable to spin the wheels in my CX-9 no matter how fast I take off, so it was a surprise. I'm planning to up-size the tires anyway so it might get better.
I haven't experienced any push back yet from lane wandering, falling asleep or front crash alert, so I can't speak to those features, except to say I hope they can be turned off!
I typically do not use radar cruise either, I just watch the road ahead.
STORAGE
I was surprised that the interior space was slightly larger than the venerable CX-9, and the rear cubby almost twice as deep. Still don't think I'll use the cubby, unless it can double as a cooler for tailgating. 😂😂
APPEARANCE
I find the lines of the Traverse more appealing than the Pilot which was my other contender. They're both kind of boxy, but the GM seems to have managed a bit of pizzazz. Even the new CX-90 with its $20k powertrain looks a bit BOXY. The Pathfinder also looks nice, especially their off road wheel pkg, but with upper control arm failures, I decided to skip it.
I hope to have 8 happy years with the Traverse as I have with the CX-9.
