What problems occur with the Northstar engine?
I have over 450,000 miles experience with Northstar engines. There is only 4 problems with a Northstar equipped car.
1.) the owner (*note)
2.) Cadillac decided to place the secondary air pump in a very bad place. If it gets wet, it will grenade and its a little pricey.
3.) For some reason the torque converter clutch solenoid likes to … short out. If you can't do the full day to fix it yourself, you will be charged about 700-900 dollars to change the 30 dollar part. I have been trouble free since I added a 3 Ohm power resistor to the circuit. My first engine, I had to swap that switch 3 times. My second car with a the added a resistor one valve change , and it has held for 150,000 miles.
4.) since Cadillac dropped the K chassi in favor of the Buick G (C) platform, its a real bear to work on the engine.
Note: cooling system neglect is the achilles heal of the Northstar engine. If you change the thermostat every year, and the water pump some time after/and every 150,00 miles, you can drive that car like you stole it for 300,000 trouble free. If you overheat it it one time mildly, you will probably be OK for another 20 thousand miles minimum on a very high mileage engine. If you overheat it twice, It will pull the head bolts out of the block, and it is junk.
