2006 Buick Rendezvous
My father baught this car as a demo new and I remember thinking it was a very funny looking car, but he seemed pleased enough with it and many people were impressed by it's looks at the time. I did drive on a road trip solo when it was fairly new and I'd have to say it was ok. I was used to driving trucks and sports cars, but after a few hours of driving it grew on me some.
The vehicle … it replaced was a suburban, which was kept as a spare, and in some ways the Buick had more room up front. It's an odd car to drive. Like nothing else I've ever driven. It's based off a minivan, but minivans are light. This is a heavy car. Around 5000 pounds. It's tall and you sit tall, but I'm a little under 6 foot and I have at least 6 to 10 inches above my head. The stearing is light and tight unlike a truck or SUV. The front wheels are close. There is a lot of low frequency road noise that travels through the bottom of car and tires. The quiet tuning almost eliminates loud music or deisel trucks next to you, but with the radio off. You here the road. The interior up front is large, but not wide. It's almost bus like. It is comfortable, but clumbsy. At the time I daily drove a mustang Cobra and f250. I had also drove a minivan a year or so before parts of year as comparison. The best way I could describe the Rendezvous is to say we're going to restyle a minivan like an SUV, shorten it, lift it, weigh it down with a larger motor, body panels, laminated glass, sound deadening material, through in some Tahoe seats, and add a very soft fully independent suspension. It somehow just works and it kept working. Go 15 years later and it's been driven by husband and wife. Loaner to children. And first car for a 16 year old. My dad was going to donate it after having power stearing issues and I had borrowed it while having some car issues of my own . The starter went out at 306,000. It was a come get for free, donate, scrap, whatever. After a few weeks I said, if your going to scrap it, could I have it. Sure. .. So a little cleaning, a starter and some power steering lines it continues on as a daily driver.
What's crazy is that the car continually amazes me. It now has 325,000 miles on it. The only items that have been replaced are the brakes, the starter, and the power steering pump and hoses aside from normal maintenance items like tires, batteries, hoses, and fluids.
Until I get in this car and see that dash board, I don't particularly like it, but when your in it and cruising at 75 you can't believe this is American made car. Not 17 years later.
The build quality of this car is unbelievable. I know the earlier ones had alot of front end issues, but that must have been resolved.
As it's aged it is a quieter, softer ride, and it's new higher end sedan nice. Nothing in the interior rattles, the seats have no rips or tears, no cracking leather, maybe vinyl?, Cxl? Everything works and it's comfortable. The paint still shines. It's unbelievable. A 325,000 Buick with no major problems, repairs, and it still looks good and drives well.
