NOT A COLD WEATHER CAR!
I purchased this car in August. I had a 2010 Forester and loved it. When the new Foresters came out with the improved gas mileage, I bought one. I absolutely loved this car until November when winter hit. Mine won't defrost the windows or the windshield wipers properly. It doesn't heat up the interior of the car. The power windows freeze, and the cool engine light comes on after letting the car warm up and driving it for several miles. Due to the engine running so cold, my gas mileage has almost cut in half during these cold winter months. I have 7000 miles on it, but living in the North, can't keep it. I'm extremely disappointed.

New Engine Needed at 12,500 miles
I was told yesterday that I need a new engine in my 2014 Forester ASAP. They wouldn't let me drive it home and bring it back. Loud knocking in the engine after start up. They told me it was due to oil consumption. Makes me sick to my stomach to think that I was going to keep this car for my daughter to drive in 8 years. Not any more!

Purchase Was A Mistake
After 13,700 miles on my 2014 2.5i Premium with CVT, I have decided my purchase was a big mistake. I kept trying to "get used to" the annoying characteristics of this drivetrain, which include an overly sensitive pedal response, producing a constant "rubber band effect" in city traffic and over revving on the road when passing. I have grown to hate it so much I am avoiding driving it. The gutless engine makes a lot of noise when pushed, but noise does not make it go fast. Additionally, the CVT bucked and jumped when cold for the first 5,000 or so miles of use, and the dealer had no explanation or fix. Not the worst car I have bought, it's close. Updated Review: After 45,000 miles, could not stand the drivetrain any longer. Traded in for a Forester XT, (250 hp turbo) which has plenty of pep, plus a good CVT, and that is saying something.

Oil Issues and Beyond
I have a 2014 Subaru Forester and love it! But, I can echo some of the oil issues. But mine have been minor comparatively. A few times in the last three years the low oil light has come on just before I was about to take it in for routine maintenance anyway. I keep a qt in the back and have topped it off apx 3 times since I bought it. When I learned about the class action lawsuit against Subaru I was quite upset and wrote my car off. I took it to the dealership and they gave me a pamphlet about oil consumption that was kind of pathetic. I know how to check the oil in any car and I expect that any modern car doesn't need that type of attention. I also expect that Subaru (to which I have friends and family that have had several different models that lasted for way over 200k miles) won't ever have a silly issue like this. However, that was 2 years ago and at almost 45k my Forester has been a champ. I also got an extended powertrain warranty from Subaru on my Forester for 8 years /100,000 miles as a result of the lawsuit. So if you buy this car used that should transfer from what I am to understand. This also gave me some much needed confidence back in the model and the brand. All this aside, the MPG are amazing for an AWD car, the interior is roomy and well appointed, it has great acceleration and it has gotten us through some tough snow and adverse weather situations safe and sound. Overall I am quite happy with my Forester and plan to keep it for a very long time. Now that the oil issue is out in the open and many cars have been updated I would highly recommend the Forester. Because without this one issue (albeit, a bad one for a few owners) this is one amazing car.

Subaru Hybrid Burns Gas and OIl
Purchased new 2014 Forrester in July 2013. At 33,000 miles the low oil light came on so I added a quart. It burns a quart every 2,000 miles. Subaru tells me it's acceptable (to them). I called a few dealerships to see if it was true and they all said the same thing. This is our 4th and sadly last Subaru. (GL-10, Legacy, Outback, Forrester). I've tried heavier (5w20) oil with the same results. On a positive note the oil consumption has not affected the gas mileage and the plugs are not fouled. The car now has 75k on it. The passenger srs light has started coming on intermittently and the cvt has gotten noticeably louder. I got a letter from the dealership about an extended warranty on the trans related to stalling. I gotta say I'm not impressed with the car. I wouldn't sell this car to anybody given the laundry list of problems. I felt deprived of the new car owner experience. A Lemon.
