Where has this car been all my life?!?!

Let's get the disclaimer out of the way first; this is my first Porsche, so I can't do the sound comparison - I'm happy, but I can't compare to "back in the day." What I can say is that this is one fine, well-built, high performing vehicle. This car simply attracted me, especially after I couldn't find much else that appealed to me. Several makes and models seemed to be going for luxury at the expense of performance. I've always preferred cars that I drove, rather than ones that drove me. And those were getting increasingly difficult to find. I've always driven manual transmissions, and several "sport sedans" and even "sport cars" were abandoning them. So I plunked down a deposit in mid-July, knowing I wouldn't get it until around the first of December. It was worth the wait. Is the Porsche 718 Cayman inexpensive? No. But it's also not cheap, either. This is a well put together car with very good materials. It has an intelligent layout that is pretty darn intuitive and easy to understand. It has the smoothest shifting of any of my previous ten cars. I'd always wondered if a car can really feel like "it corners on rails"; now I know one can. The handling of this car, and its responsiveness, is what I'd dream about if I dreamed about "the ultimate car." I wanted a car that would be just plain fun to drive on meandering country roads, and now I've got it. We've all had that one car we felt connected to - I had mine in my late 20s. But this Cayman looks like it will rival, and likely surpass, that connection. I suspect that in a very short time I will know what the car will do, and it will know what I'm up to. I've only had that one other car that generated that level of trust. And the look of this car is stunning (and with better lines than the previous Caymans). Also, a plug for Sun Motor Cars in Pennsylvania, an excellent dealership, is in order. So let's sum it up: looks, handling, the fun quotient, comfort, acceleration, a (gasp!) car with a manual transmission, that feeling of connection, a car that exudes thoughtful class and excellence - yes, this new Cayman checks all the boxes for me. One. Fine. Vehicle.

718: there is no substitute

Having been interested in Porsche for many years, I began reading reviews of the new 718 series as soon as they began to appear. I finally got the chance to drive one (a base Boxster) about a month ago, and I was very impressed: it was superior in every respect to the 2014 Boxster S that I was driving. After thinking it over for a while, I returned to my dealer last week, and drove the base car again, followed by an S. I was again impressed by the base car, but the S clearly had higher performance. Having had a Boxster, I decided to buy a Cayman this time: better visibility, the ability to take it through a car wash, getting away from troublesome sun glare with the top down and less expensive. My dealer (Checkered Flag in Virginia Beach) gave me an outstanding deal, and I bought my new Cayman S on 11-29-16. If you have read reviews that whine about the noise of the new engines, ignore them: the new engines have a bass note that is very satisfying. The 718 is also superior to its predecessor in every respect - better steering, better ride, better handling, better acceleration. I am very pleased, as anyone will be who is looking for the quintessential sports car. Update, 12-2-18. After having this car for 18 months, I got very tired of it. The instruments were hard to read, the controls were hard to see and use safely, and the blurpblurp engine noise got to be very tiresome. In addition, an oxygen sensor sailed after only 2,000 miles. Overall, a nice car, but I will never buy another. I traded it for an Audi TT RS, which is a much better car.

Porsche is right - there is no substitute

In 2018 I bought an Audi TT RS, which I thought was nearly perfect. That feeling lasted until I drove a high mileage 2012 Cayman R a few days ago. I was very surprised by how superior the driving experience was to my Audi. Two days later I bought a well optioned 2019 base Cayman with PDK, which felt very similar to the old R that I had driven. I bought a base car rather than an S because the performance is outstanding, more than sufficient for my needs, and it was much less expensive. I am delighted with it, and have resolved to never again buy any sports car but a Porsche. Excellence is expected, and always delivered.

I've owned an Porsche Panamera 4 for several years, but decided to trade it in for the new 2017 Porsche Cayman S. One word, "WOW", this vehicle is a totally Amazing. I enjoyed my Panamera 4, but driving the Cayman S will put a Smile on your face for hours. This vehicle is responsive, amazingly fast, and you'll fall in Love on the test drive. I researched this vehicle for several months and the reviews were excellent. After owning my Cayman S for 3 weeks, I have to agree with the Five Star reviews. I love everything about this car, the ride, handling, responsiveness, comfort, and true Porsche Driving experience. I thought I would miss my Panamera 4, but once I got behind the wheel of my new Cayman S only one word comes to mind, "Wow".

UPDATE: Very stable, comfortable, and easy to drive. Still feels like new. No problems. ORIGINAL: Glad I opted for this brand and model. Well made; high quality comfortable to drive for me and my wife; and sufficiently fast. Handles like a slot car on steroids. The PDK transmission is impressive. Unless you run 10,000 mile annually, I would not purchase the maintenance package--not worth the cost.

A wonderfully performing two-seater, with an excellent sound system by Bose. Has superior handling, particularly at speed, and acceleration above sixty miles-per-hour is phenomenal. The engine can be a bit loud during acceleration, but the sound is terrific.

My last car, again?

My first Porsche was a 2005 911S Cabriolet. Bought it new off the lot, owned it for 5.5 years, great car, but last year was painful with out of warranty repairs. Sold it and went 2 years Porsche-less before ordering a 2014 Cayman S. Took delivery in May, 2013, and the bond was immediate. Not quite as quick as the 911 in a straight line, everything else was an improvement. Mid engine handling and balance was superb. Thought I was going to keep it until wheels fell off - its or mine. The 718 switch to 4 cylinders further added to my commitment to the 6 cylinder 981 model. Then…..the Cayman GTS 4.0. I had been previously tempted by both the 981 and 718 GT4 to trade up, but the track focused nature was holding me back. In 8 tears I put 50k miles on the Cayman S with 60% tread remaining on my second set of Michelin Pilots. Same driving would have required 4-5 sets of the sticky Michelin Cups on the GT4 at $2k+ a set. Not a deal breaker but a consideration and an obligation to at least take it to the track a couple of times a year. The 718 GTS 4.0 was perfect alternative for me. Same engine as GT4, better ride on public roads, and all the car i would need to enjoy an occasional track event. I go with 6-speed manual always, for engagement and enjoyment. I went with LWB (carbon fiber) seats that are fantastic and will encourage me to stay in shape. Everything else is perfect, with slight to significant improvements over my 2014 Cayman S. And the GTS is significantly quicker than my former 911S. This may just be my last sports car. Or at least one I won’t trade if I get another. The 911 has grown into a mini-Panamera GT car. Phenomenal performance but without the intimacy and visceral feel of the smaller Cayman. The Cayman remains analog in a good way, the 911 went a step too digital with the 992 for my tastes.

Ok, the base 718Cayman isn't the fastest little thing out there, but it isn't meant to be. Sure you can spend upward $100k for the GTS, but really, how many need that much power? If you are tracking, sure..,.but otherwise the base will put a smile 😊 on your face every time. Handling, steering, braking, and killer great looks, yes, for almost all, you are good to go. I bought the 2022 718 base with no regrets, driving the mountain roads of Colorado, awesome!

Big step up for me car-wise. Considered a CPO but based on used car prices, it actually only came out to be a few thousand more to build/buy new. This was a Covid-life crisis purchase for me… and the teenager in me who loved wringing out Honda 5-speed Civics, is in heaven. Thank you Porsche for still making these available. I can’t say anything else that the 2 decades of Car & Driver 10 Best hadn’t already said. It’s a sublime sexy beast, and I have a base model with no performance upgrades. My wife, who understands my car disease but has never cared for anything I’ve owned… even she can’t deny a smile and laugh when we’re in the thing. I am tall at 6’4 and while the cabin totally fits me, easily, the ingress and egress is obviously eventful, haha. I think my desire to not scuff the sills, doors, and/or rub the bolsters makes it even more stressful of a experience. I’m still trying to find that sweet spot comfort setting (manual sports seats plus) but really, the cabin is a pure joy to be in. This is my daily driver, at least for a couple years when we upgrade my wife’s car, then it may become a 2-3x/week driver. So far getting 19-20 mpg in city traffic with sport mode and exhaust on. The only premiums I checked were folding mirrors, ventilated seats, and sports plus seats. The standard 18-inch wheels just give it that old school roadster look… and the drive, while certainly sporty, is actually great, biggest win is it’s wife-approved. I love it and with only 350 miles into ownership, I already hope to be a P-car guy for the rest of my life.

Some Cayman Love

MiamiGT4, 09/09/2022

OK, so I may be biased, but owning 3 Caymans has given me some serious love for the 981/718. My first Cayman was a 718 GT4 that I bought in summer of 2020 when the market for everything tanked and you could get one for MSRP. My intent was to track the car but when I received it with 13 miles on the odometer I said no way was it going to be in harm’s way. As the prices started to creep up I bought a Sapphire Blue 2014 Cayman S with beige interior and now use that as my daily driver and track car. Have updated the brakes to yellow caliper Brembo GTs, ducktail spoiler, GT4 side vents, GT4 rear diffuser, and a TechArt front spoiler and running Cup 2s. The GT4 and 981CS are somewhat familiar to each other but very different in feel. The GT4’s steering has an indescribable feedback, it’s amazing. The ceramic brakes are otherworldly. The entire car feels slightly bigger (exact same size) but far more planted. On rougher roads it feels like the GT4 is actually pushing the tires down into the road surface, the Cayman S feels like a very good road car, but not at the same level as the GT4. So the third Cayman? A GT4RS, currently in production, due in by mid-November. It took me having to trade in my GT4 early to score an allocation, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

So Edmunds gives the GT4RS low scores in comfort and practicality? lol, good to know. So, after 15 months of owning my GT4RS (after a 718 GT4, 911 times 2, 2 Ferraris) is that I’ve never felt a car more planted and exciting to drive. The sound is every bit as crazy as has been reported. I have PCCBs and the feedback and feel is unreal. Most performance cars feel like a road car that’s been modified for the track (I’m talking to you BMW) while this car feels like a track car you can also use on the roadbb. Mostly.

She’s got curves, turns heads, accelerates quickly and will be every bit as good to you as you are to her... the Cayman 718 is a goddess. Take her on a back toad, sling her around a few curves and you’ll realize you just met your plus one, your soul mate, your better half. Do yourself a favor and buy the car.

Having owned nine Porsche models from 1986 through 2021 I decided to buy the new Corvette when I saw a picture of it. Well, let me tell you something my Lexus IS300 Reminded me that the Corvette is just a beautiful smooth running car with 230 hp more than the Lexus. You can’t compare the fun factor of a Porsche to the Corvette so I decided to sell the Corvette and buy the Cayman style edition. I still on a beautiful 2004 Porsche Boxster with a six cylinder and wasn’t sure if I would like the four cylinder. 300 hp later I love this car, Beautiful, tight, and put a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel more than the Corvette ever could. Really don’t know what else I could say. Maybe I’m just a Porsche guy at heart but I know what I like and I love this car.

I really like the clean lines of this car. It has the performance and quality of the brand, at a more economical entry point. The 300 hp twin turbo flat four provides more than enough power to push the car toward the more aggressive limits of road or track. The lowered sport suspension can be felt in the handling around tight curves. The overall fit and finish is spectacular. The sport chrono package provides an additional level of performance for pushing the car to a higher plane.

I have been considering a Porsche for years. I was considering purchasing a sports car and looked at the BMW M4, Audi S5 and RS, and a few others When Porsche announced it was no longer going to make a gas version of the cayman I started to seriously consider purchasing one. I test drove several caymans and even test drove the 911. All of the vehicles I considered were great vehicles. However, I kept coming back to the cayman was just far more fun to drive. Part of the fun factor is that the caymans I was testing were a manual but it was also the engineering of the vehicle. When my wife came on test drives with me she ended up having the same response - “ the cayman 718 as most fun to drive”. I pulled the trigger on a 2024 cayman style 718. It’s been an awesome vehicle to date.

Costs for maintenance seem pretty high, but it is a Porsche. Cost of the car was fine, it's when you start adding options. Yikes! Great car, fun to drive. Sounds OK, but not a beast like the flat 6.

We traded a Porsche Hybrid Panamera for a Porsche Cayman S ... what a joy this new car is to drive. EV might be the future but for right now, if you want to 'drive' the Cayman S offers a lot as a daily driver. Wish we traded earlier! (Don't get me wrong the Hybrid Panamera was great while waiting in the car during COVID, but battery portion does have growing pains as we found out).

But, I still prefer my NC Miata Club (6M)

Pure theater and sense of occasion, exactly what I’d expect from a $100K+ sports car (bought my last dream car too, a 2.2 S2K). Impractical and unusable as a daily driver. Car is in desperate need of a lift kit. I can barely tolerate it as a 3rd car. I have as much, and carefree fun canyon carving in my bone stock NC Miata. But the Mazda 4 banger can’t compete w that flat 6 sound! Knew GTS 4.0 was a better fit for me, but at the end I chose the GT4 for potential appreciation, when Boxster/Cayman twins go electric. Glad I did, because 1st year GTS 4.0 was immediately recalled for engine replacement. At least I bought before it was discounted, and under MSRP early 2021. RS is out of reach with markup. If I only have 1 Porsche, I want it to be two door n manual, and of course, that flat 6 (NA) soundtrack. All the premium audio I need! Though gf’s 987 Boxster sounds better, even w/o the sports exhaust. Blame EU for tightening up emissions reg. And yes, Porsche comes with Porsche maintenance costs.

Have only put a few 100 miles on it, but so far so good. Good power and handling but way over priced Added Soul over axle pipes and exhaust. Good sound when on the gas but a loud drone around 2500 rpm

This is a great sports car that delivers performance in every way. The ONLY drawback is in the tech area. Other cars in this price range offer more up-to-date tech. But the rest of the experience more than makes up for wired apple car play. I would make the purchase all over again!
