Pros
- Quick acceleration
- Pleasing balance of sharp handling and a comfortable ride
- Stylish interior
Cons
- Not much interior storage space for small items
- New brand with unknown track record
What's new
- More range and power for single- and dual-motor variants
- Single-motor trim capable of faster DC charging
- Single-motor models are now rear-wheel-drive
- Part of the first Polestar 2 generation introduced for 2021
Overview
Polestar is Volvo's electric sub-brand, which means the Polestar 2 shares a lot with the Volvo XC40 Recharge electric SUV. (Polestar calls it the 2 because it's the brand's second vehicle; guess what they named the third one?) The proportions toe the line between car and crossover, and Polestar doesn't help clear up the confusion, calling its compact five-seat 2 a "liftback." That's a self-conscious word for a hatchback with sloping rear glass — similar to what Audi calls a Sportback.

Range
edmunds TESTED
362 miles
Edmunds Tested RangeEdmunds begins with a full battery charge and drives the vehicle on a mix of city and highway roads (approximately 60% city, 40% highway) until the battery is almost entirely empty. (We target 10 miles of remaining range for safety.) The miles traveled and the indicated remaining range are added together for the Edmunds Tested Range figure.
EV batteries lose 1-2% of range per year. Est. range for this car is 308 miles after 8 years.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.
Estimated range mapThis map is a visual representation of the possible one-way and round-trips by this vehicle (on a full charge) from the geometric center of Lufkin, Texas. The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.

Am I Ready for an EV?
- EV ownership works best if you can charge (240V) at home or at work This typically means a 240V home installation, but you could also have a similar setup at your office or other places your car is already parked for several hours each day. Don't expect a regular household outlet (120V) to suffice unless you've got a plug-in hybrid, in which case overnight charging at home is feasible.
- If you can’t charge at home, charging at a charging station could take at least 10x longer than at a gas station With public charging infrastructure still in its infancy, the user experience can be maddeningly inconsistent. Tesla owners tend to rave about the reliability and speed of the company's proprietary Supercharger stations, but rival DC fast options have thus far been plagued by technical issues and overcrowding. It's an evolving landscape and our best advice is to do your research on the available options for the EV you want to buy.
- Adding a 240V home charging system could cost up to $1,600 or more If your existing electrical service can handle the additional demands of EV charging, you may be able to add Level 2 charging at home for less than a grand, including installation. But your costs will multiply if you need to upgrade your electrical panel or add a dedicated circuit.
Edmunds spotlight: More power, more range
Polestar made significant changes last year and it's doing the same for 2024. The most affordable 2 now has its single motor mounted on the rear axle instead of the front, and its battery pack grows from 78 kWh to 82 kWh. Dual-motor models keep the 78-kWh pack. New electric motors are both more powerful and more efficient; output for the single-motor rises from 231 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque to 299 hp and 361 lb-ft. The dual-motor now makes 421 hp and 546 lb-ft, up from 408 hp and 467 lb-ft. Range increases for the Polestar 2 too. The EPA rates the single-motor at a max 320 miles versus the 2023 model's max of 270 miles, while the dual-motor tops out at 276 miles, up from 260 miles.
Competitors to consider
Its high-riding stance puts the Polestar 2's silhouette between the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Depending on equipment levels and drivetrains, it can line up against a variety of other EVs, from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to the Subaru Solterra/Toyota bZ4X twins, and from the Kia EV6 to the BMW i4. Whew. That's a lot of desirable vehicles.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.5/10
How does the 2 drive? We tested a dual-motor Polestar 2 with the optional Performance Pack. At the Edmunds test track, it sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, making it one of the quicker EVs in its class. There's plenty of power available, so you'll never be left wanting on a highway entrance ramp or when passing slow-moving traffic.
The Performance Pack adds a bit more horsepower as well as Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes, 20-inch wheels and some sweet-looking gold seat belts. The dampers are manually adjustable, so you (or your Polestar service center) can dial in your preferred settings. The suspension does a good job of hiding the car's sizable weight, keeping body roll and brake dive in check.
Braking performance itself was solid, with short, consistent stops at our test track and smooth braking on the street. We found the pedal itself a bit stiff, but actual stopping power was never in doubt. The Polestar 2 allows for full one-pedal driving. The steering effort is light, which makes the car easy to park but saps some of the fun from the driving experience.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the 2? Polestar has done an excellent job of making the 2 comfortable. The ride is compliant without being overly soft, even with the Performance Pack's sport-tuned Öhlins dampers and 20-inch wheels. The front seats have enough cushioning and support to make long drives comfortable, though we found the upholstery doesn't breathe well unless you opt for the pricey leather upholstery. It's quiet, too, with only a mild amount of wind and road noise apparent at highway speeds.
All Polestar 2 models come standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, and our test vehicle was equipped with heated front and rear seats. Cars with leather upholstery also get ventilated front seats. The climate control system works quickly to heat or cool the cabin.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The Polestar 2 uses a Google-based touchscreen interface that's reliable and easy to use. Most of the other controls are straight from sister company Volvo and require some time to get familiar with. That includes the window switches, steering wheel and turn signal stalks. The steering wheel controls in particular can be cumbersome as it's not immediately obvious what many of the buttons actually control or adjust.
The Polestar 2 isn't a large car, but it provides a decent amount of space for both front and rear passengers. The car's small size makes getting in and out of tight parking spots relatively easy, though we wish the doors opened a bit wider for easier entry and exit. Visibility is aided by relatively large side windows and mirrors. The rear window is narrow, however, so we're thankful for the standard surround-view camera system. That said, the resolution from the cameras is lacking compared to what you get with a Tesla or BMW.

Technology
8.5/10
How’s the tech? The Polestar's tech has improved since it launched thanks to a handful of over-the-air updates. The 2 now includes Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay, though neither is wireless. A wireless charging pad is standard, as are four USB-C charging ports. The Google-backed infotainment system uses apps like Google Maps for navigation and Google Assistant for voice commands. Both are excellent, especially if you log in with a Google account. Voice commands can be used for everything from navigation to climate control to checking the weather.
Polestar includes a decent number of standard driver aids like blind-spot warning and parking sensors. Our test vehicle was optioned with Polestar's Pilot Pack, which adds adaptive cruise control, a lane keeping system and more. We found the features generally work well, without excessive braking or accelerating with adaptive cruise control and no real false alarms with the emergency braking system.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Polestar 2 has both a hatchback-style trunk and a very small front trunk. The rear cargo area seems larger than its official 14.2-cubic-foot capacity would suggest and the hatchback-style opening makes loading cargo fairly easy. The 60/40-split folding seats open up the area further. Still, you'll get more space from comparable SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Polestar 2 does have a 2,000-pound factory tow rating, which isn't a lot of weight, but some rivals aren't rated to tow anything.
Small-item storage isn't so great. The center battery tunnel cuts into space that would otherwise be for small-item storage. Cupholders are concealed under a sliding and folding armrest, so you have to choose between drinks or an elbow rest. Most other cubbies are modestly sized. Got kids? The rear seat has Isofix anchor points located under plastic tabs. Most child safety seats should fit OK, though installing a rear-facing seat will limit how far back you can scoot the front seats.

Range and Efficiency
7/10
How are the range and efficiency? The Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor, which is what we tested, gets an EPA-estimated range of 276 miles for a standard model with 19-inch wheels to 247 miles for models with the Performance Pack. Our test vehicle was so equipped, but we managed to exceed the EPA estimate in the Edmunds EV Range Test. We drove 268 miles on a single charge, and our consumption figure of 32 kWh of electricity used for every 100 miles of driving matched the EPA's estimate. Overall, the Polestar 2's range should be enough for many people but know that you can get even more range from a Tesla Model 3 or Hyundai Ioniq 6.
Value
7.5/10
Is the 2 a good value? Polestar borrows a lot from sister company Volvo, giving it a distinctly European look and feel. The interior is stylish and simple, though the sea of black surfaces can be a bit drab after a while. The materials, even the plastic bits, feel premium, but improvements in rivals no longer make the Polestar a standout. Pricing undercuts some other luxury EVs like the BMW i4 M50, but the Polestar's price is a lot more than the Tesla Model 3's.
Part of that premium price does include a decent warranty and some other ownership benefits. Polestar's four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty and eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty are pretty standard for the class. Polestar also includes roadside assistance for four years/50,000 miles and three years/30,000 miles of service visits.

Wildcard
8.5/10
The Polestar 2 Long Range Dual Motor, particularly with the Performance Pack, can be a good bit of fun to drive. The Dual Motor's torque makes it feel quick everywhere, and the adjustable suspension does an excellent job of keeping body motions in check. It feels like a proper sport sedan, giving you enough engagement to feel fun without horribly sacrificing comfort or drivability. We just wish it did more to stand out. The 2 is a handsome car, but the subtle badging makes it look a bit like a Volvo without logos rather than a distinct model.
Which 2 does Edmunds recommend?
Polestar offers both the single- and dual-motor 2s in either base form or with a Plus package. Its longer range and faster DC charging capability make the Long Range Single Motor our choice, and a minimal upcharge for the additional comfort and safety features makes the Pilot package a no-brainer.

Polestar 2 vs. Kia EV6
Kia took a surprisingly sporty route with the EV6, which offers up to 576 horsepower in the all-wheel-drive GT trim. It'll accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, but the EV6 GT starts north of $60,000 and is only good for 206 miles per EPA estimates. Saner rear-wheel-drive trims are closer to the Polestar 2 both in range (up to 310 miles) and price.
Polestar 2 vs. Tesla Model 3
Polestar may be a new brand, but its ties to Volvo are reassuring when it comes to reliability and longevity — especially compared to Tesla's inconsistent build quality. The Model 3's price of entry is significantly lower than the Polestar 2's, although there is a commensurate range penalty. Still, Tesla's ample storage space and available self-driving tech make it a practical choice.
Polestar 2 vs. BMW i4
Many carmakers are getting adventurous with EV styling because of the ease of packaging electrical components relative to internal combustion engines. But the BMW i4 just looks weird — because that's what modern BMWs do. At least it's familiar — and that applies to the interior, too. It's just as luxurious as any other 4 Series interior. You may not have guessed from looking at it, but the i4 is what Polestar would call a liftback too.
