CVT Technology and the 2011 Maxima SV

The 2011 Maxima SV is an overall great car. Not only is the sports sedan great for people with kids who just can't bring themselves to travel around in a minivan, but it handles well, gets great gas mileage, and makes driving less of a chore and more of an adventure. Really, I love to find an excuse, any excuse, to drive this car. And it has plenty of room in the trunk for groceries, and for my large dog (who has not quite gotten used to the fact that we no longer have a hatchback vehicle and she can't just ride in there). I don't know how I survived without a dual sunroof, heated and cooled seats, or a heated steering wheel. And the pickup...when you press the gas, it GOES.

Don't compare to Camry & Accord

I recently bought a 2011 Maxima S and could not be happier with the car at the price I paid. I took the 0% NMAC financing, so I didn't get all the rebates; but, at about $26.5k, you have to compare this Maxima to cars like Acura TL and Lexus ES350. The 290HP, keyless ignition, all the safety features, the power seats, 6-disc changer and other features make this car very formidable against higher priced competitors. I know I don't have leather, but that's about all I don't have versus cars like that.

Passenger airbag light malfunction

I purchased my '11 Maxima new on 03/31/2011 and have had an issue with the passenger side airbag light coming on with an adult passenger in the seat. When the light is on, it reflects that the airbag is in the 'off' position. I have brought the problem to my dealer's attention, Giles Nissan, Lafayette, LA ever since my first 3,750 oil change service, and was given a variety of reasons. At first the dealer could not locate the trouble then I was told that it was normal. I finally brought my wife with me and rode with a service tech who witnessed the problem. Since then, different techs at different times have experienced the light on, however the issue has not yet been resolved.

Wow I went from a 08 Maxima and now in the 2011 all I can say is Wow...Nissan you did right on this model..better turning radius, more comfort, tons of options, and 20 more HP. This is my 3rd Nissan and it cant get much better. Only dislike I have is that they do not have the rear back up sensors like my 08. Other than that fun to drive and turning heads. Paddle shift is awesome. PRICE was great compared to other vehicles...and Nissan is extremely LOYAL to past customers. This is the ONLY car out there that gives you the options that you want and need at a affordable price. Interior of my car is to say the least STUNNING!

I bought a 2011 SV with Premium package in February. I previously owned a 1998 Maxima SE 5speed manual that I bought new. This new Max has better steering but the CVT in automatic mode is awful and the torque steer at higher speed (75-85mph) is dangerous. My dealer experience also left a lot to be desired.

Transmission Failure!

I have a 2011 Nissan Maxima, and the CVT transmission has failed on the vehicle. I researched the web, to see if there were any other concerns with this type of transmission, and I found that from 2003 - 2010, a large range of Nissan vehicles had their warranty extended from Nissan, due to the CVT transmissions failing on the vehicles. Being that my vehicle is a 2011, their corporate office is saying that they will not assist me with repairing my vehicle, due to the vehicle being ONLY ONE (1) YEAR OUTSIDE OF THEIR WARRANTY EXTENSION ON SO MANY OTHER VEHICLES. Funny, there is an article listed on edmunds.com, on a 2011 Nissan Maxima CVT transmission failing him just after his warranty expiring (A 2011 MODEL). I am in the automotive industry and have a large influence in the Memphis area, so I am informing everyone that I know, to not ever buy a Nissan product, due to them not wanting to own up to their engine concerns and problems.

This car has more ratttles than a babies crib! I can't even find them all. I can't open the sun roof it rattles so bad. I have one coming from the back some where. There are others. The seats belts scratch up the inside of the passager sides. I also have a strong gasoline odor at times. Car is on its way to the shop.

I purchased my 2011 Nissan Maxima in November 2011. I have had an issue with the passenger side airbag light on with an adult in the seat. I have taken the car to the dealership on numberous occasions and was told it was normal. I called Nissan and talked with some named Tim, he took my information over the phone and said he would get back with me in a few days. He called my husband and told him the seat was functioning properly, that the adults weren't sitting in the seat properly. I called him back with no response. How can they say it is functioning properly no one at Nissan or the dealership will ride in the car with me so I can show them what the car is doing. Very disappointed..

The short list was between Genesys V6, Infinity G37 and the Maxima. The $ value proposition favored the Maxima hands down and the test drives sealed the deal. Perf & Tech packages were added as I wanted all the bells & whistles. My three month ownership experience vs. expectation align well. The V6 is more than enough @ 290hp with a responsive power train. The suspension is smooth without being cushy. The interior while below the Infinity does not leave one lacking. Visibility & ride quality are tops. Driving this car is pure fun. Thanks to the DVD tool grasping the all the technology was simplified. Premium Fuel is a downer and something Nissan should address especially @ 26 mph highway

I bought my 2011 SV Sport right as the 2012s were coming out so I got a decent deal. I was really looking at Infiniti G37s but those dealers werent negotiating. The sport package is the best looking version, IMO due to the 19 inch wheels and smoked headlights, and its equipped with some of the extra goodies I would have wanted anyways. As of 9/17/12, I am just shy of 7000 miles on the odo.

BUYER BEWARE!!! Have a 2011 Nisaan Maxima SV. I've read the reviews and seems I'm not the only one. I just hit 88000 miles and transmission went out without any warranty. Contacted Nissan and was told if I would have had a 2010 or older I would have extended warranty from Nissan to cover it. What do they think their problems just stopped after 2010? I've read hundreds of reviews on multiple sites and all say the same thing. These transmission they put in these cars are junk. DO NOT BUY A NIISAN PRODUCT. That's the best advice somebody can give that you should heed

I now have 14,000 miles on my maxima SV premium edition and I have to say I won't buy another nissan product. I have had a bad rattle in the car since day one, headliner above the back seat(they made it little better recently). Front hood rubber seal keeps popping out of its space. A creaking dash/windshield area? The car went into a lockup mode last week and had to be towed to the dealer and the whole computer system rebooted. Now I have two more rattles in upper dash and climate control area. I have only owned 2 nissans, altima before which I loved, now maxima. That's a bad satisfaction ratio. Owned plenty of toyota's and honda products with no rattles or issues above 100k miles.

Bought my premium SV with every option possible in January. Amazing! I was totally impressed with these cars when my brother bought a 95 fully loaded. I loved driving that car. I love this one even more! Room? Tons. I drive co-workers to lunch too, and they are impressed with the room in the back seat. One owns a 2002. Noticeably more room here, which was intended! The AC blower is pretty loud, but that is because it is blasting you with lots of cfm. This is great when you come out to a hot car after work. What did the other person mean about the accessory? If you want the car accessory on, don't press the brake & push the button. Push it again for ON. Push it again for all off.

48000 Transmission fail update

This is a beautiful car but I question the reliability of the CVT transmission. My car has 48000 miles on it, service as recommended no warning whatsoever the transmission failed the factory warranty expired 12-19-2015 the day before the transmission failed . Nissan tried to make me pay for the repair which was $4,500. I had to contact Nissan corporation and go to arbitration to resolve this matter after a time-consuming ordeal they agreed to fix the vehicle. I am Not sure if I'm planning on keeping this vehicle the CVT transmission is definitely a flawed design. I wish Nissan would stand behind their products I don't know if I would ever buy another Nissan product moving forward. So I'm still driving the vehicle since the new transmission was installed. I have put 5496 miles on the vehicle since install and some days it concerns me. I'll keep you posted. February 3 2022 Believe or not since the last replacement transmission its held up just fine now with 156000 miles on it. Hopefully this one will last much longer its due for another transmission service. The key is getting service every year and maybe those CVT might last.

Love everything about the car except the rattles. I hear one above the steering column. There is one on the plastic piece that has all the temperature and radio buttons. I hear one over by the passenger side where the seat belt is located. Of course these rattles come and go. I took it to the dealer who appearently fixed a rattle but I couldn't tell. Also said that the rattle where the radio butttons were couldn't be fixed yet they somehow made the rattle louder. You also can actually see my passenger seat vibrate as I'm driving although the wife doesn't mind it:)

I traded an '06 Maxima SE for the '11 S. I love the styling, inside and out. Very classy in black. Power is great, although there is some torque steer. Comfort is great, and the inside controls are much more user friendly than on the '06. Trunk space is less, which could be an issue. The radio is much better quality than the '06. It's fun to drive, and it handles well. Now for what I don't like. Under heavy acceleration the engine is very noisy, almost irritatingly so. Also, there is significant wind noise starting about 40 mph on up. The ride isn't as smooth as my '06 either. Maybe it's the Goodyear Eagles---my other one had Bridgestones. On windy days, the car is buffeted.

Owned 1992 SE, bought new, drove it 120k miles-no trouble great car. Next came 1999 528i, bought new in 2000, drove 135k miles...spent way too much in repairs and maintenance-tired of getting robbed by the dealers. Love the new body style of 2009 Max...bought new in Jan 09. Tested A4, ES350,G35x, Acura TL. Nothing close. This car will crush the 528 anyday. I have almost 80k miles now-only investment has been gas, oil changes, one set of tires all around and front brake pads only-everything else still original and looks great (yes garaged). The cost of ownership has been incredible. Yes I will get another Max.

I did a lot of research before deciding upon this car. Most important to me was safety, after being in a car accident a year ago it was clear to me that if someone can hit me out of no where, I need to make sure the next vehicle I have stands up to impact. This car has a 5 Star Safety Rating and side impact is well covered! The inside of this car makes you feel like you're wrapped in bubble wrap and foam! It has all the comfort and bells and whistles of a luxury car, with all the speed you need to safely get onto the highway of a sports car! I'm very happy with my new 2011 Maxima!

I bought a 2011 used in 2014 on Christmas Eve. It had 42k miles. A pretty black cherry SV with 19” wheels. Five years later my cost of ownership has been zero minus tires, brakes and fluid changes. I track all my cars and I haven’t spent one breakage repair dime on this carbon 5 years! Out of all the European and American cars I’ve owned it is def the best combination of power, comfort, style and gas mileage. I’ve Driven it across the country (at 95k miles) and it was just a joy to drive. It now has 109k. I really want to get a new car but just can’t get out of it. It still runs great and looks new. I don’t like the redesign Maxima Looks but didI drive one and man is it great! The new Altima looks beautiful tho. Any person now looking to buy a used car for under $10k you can’t find a better vehicle!

I have had this car for a little over a year and I am very impressed with it. It gets a little better gas mileage then the 2010 Lacrosse that I traded for it, but the power is sooo much better. I can actually merge into traffic now. Yes you have to use the Nissan Synthetic Oil (about $90 an oil change) and premium gas. So it is expensive to maintain, but it has never had an issues, is beautiful inside an dout and has plenty of power. It's is well worth the extra cost.

I purchased a 2011 Maxima with premium and premium tech packages one week ago. It is a gorgeous car which is tremendous fun to drive. My previous vehicle was a 2009 Altima, and I can definitely notice a performance difference with only 20 more hp. There is plenty of room for all 4 of us to fit comfortably even with the slightly lower dual panel moonroof. The driver's seat is particularly comfortable. I bought the car in the Summer in Texas, and the chilled driver's seat is a tremendous bonus. The rear sunshade makes the clips on the carseats easier to touch and handle. We live in a city of 100,000 with a lot of 1-2 mile trips. Horrible town mileage (14-15), but 29.5 @ 70 on a highway trip.

Just a smooth ride! Love this car. Don't have any issues. My AC is super cold, love my cooled driver seat, no rattles, bluetooth is smart. It recognizes who gets in the car more, me or my wife, and automatically connects to the most frequent driver. This car has THE BEST stock stereo I have ever had. The BOSE is awesome. You really don't know how good it is until you turn it up to just two or three bars below max volume and set the equalizer like you want. I am a spirited driver. My main car is a Mustang GT. This car has plenty of power. More torque steer as my tires wear and get older. But the handling is still superb. Suspension is tight but smooth.

I have a 2011 Maxima with premium package and overall I absolutely love this car. I moved up from my 2009 Altima SL and couldn't be much happier. The only problems are interior noises from the radio/climate console (which i think could use a redesign), what sounds like the rear window, and vibration and noise from the front passenger seat when unoccupied. The noises seem to be worse when it's colder out and I haven't owned it during the summer yet so I'm hoping to see a reduction of the noise soon. Other than that, I feel the nav and voice recognition system do not work very well. Otherwise, the look and feel of the rest of the car is great and think it's a great car for the price.

3.5 SV silver premium package. Fun to drive but babying it through break in period. It was this or a 2011 Charger AWD max, tough choice for me. Loved the charger but just found the maxima more refined and comfortable for 20k miles a year and concerned with dodge reliability. But I gave up the Hemi and AWD for the maxima. Love the car more everyday I'm in it. I get alot of looks because maxima's are a rare care now, which I love. The hood and the bulges make the car pop from inside and out. I had an 08 altima 2.5SL lease before and loved it as well. Maxima is twice as much fun to drive so i bought this one. Getting 20mpg around town so far, no highway trips yet. Torque steer is present but ok

I have a 2011 Nissan Maxima which I bought brand new in November 2010. The CVT transmission shut down while driving! The car has only 53,146 miles and no other mechanical problems. I found out Nissan extended warranties on 2007-2010 select vehicles including the Maxima due to CVT transmission problems. My car was towed to Nissan early Monday morning. I was given a toll free number to corporate office for possible assistance on Tuesday and they kept my car through Friday before coming back to tell me they would not be assisting me. I asked what criteria was used to make that determination. The agent stated the same info I had given them on Tuesday morning, i.e., how many miles are on the vehicle, the warranty, etc. They had no intention of assisting. What a waste! It is all about the dollar. The car is cosmetic, just looks good, that's it! She said it was 15 months outside of warranty when in fact I bought an extended 6 year/100000 mile warranty from Nissan when I bought the car. The warranty expired 3 months ago in November 2016. They stated they did not see the warranty in their system and it must have been an outside warranty sold to me by Nissan. All CVT transmission cars should be recalled. It is like a ticking time bomb. They are waiting for something drastic to happen before being forced to recall. What a waste!

4000 Mile Update, love it with a few gripes.

My overall satisfaction with the maxima has been very good, not spectacular, but very good. Lets get the bad things out of the way first. Annoying rattle coming from the rear deck, rear deck speakers, brake light or somewhere. I have never owned a car with any rattle before so not impressed, it didn't do it when I took it in of course but will keep looking. On sunny days the auto climate control fan speed stays on way to high, will never calm down. My 08 altima didn't do this. The passenger seat is one of the most uncomfortable seats ever ridden in, thank god I never have too. It sits to tall, almost like it was designed for a kid, and much more adjustability needed.

I've had it long enough to ensure a quantify review. I've had no issues with anything in or in the car. Mine is maxed out and is a pure pleasure to drive. No Mechanical issues whatsoever. My has the sport suspension so its a bit bumpy on poor roads, on good roads its a dream. The Trans in this car is not for performance, its to save on gas, its NOT a sports car regardless of what Nissan says, cvt cant be a sports transmission. I find myself using the paddle shifters much of the time.

Aswesome Car

I just purchased my Maxima with premium pkg 3 days ago and let me tell you this vehicle is aswesome. I traded in my nissan Rouge and what a difference I actually took my daughter to purchase a nissan altima coupe another aweswome vehicle but after test driving the maxima I was offered a deal I couldn't pass on. The ride was smooth and the power is unmatched great value for this car compared to others I looked at like BMW, Audi and Volvo. I wish I would have opted for the Navi system but im sure I can get a nice portable one much cheaper. I am glad I purchased this car i'll be traded into another one after my lease ends it's the car for me.

I was driving an Altima coupe 3.5, for two years before someone hit it. I enjoyed that car a great deal. I always believed the drive btween the Altima 3.5 and the Maxima 3.5 was similar.. Wow far from the truth. The Maxima feels stronger, drives stronger and the engine sound is wonderful.. The tech features in the Maxima looks and feels leaps and bounds beyond the Altima fully loaded. The Altima is a great car but it's no Maxima. Neither is the Accord, Camary, Avalon, 2.0 Sonata, which I test drove before driving the Maxima.. What a car... Maxima SV with Sports Package.. you cant go wrong.

Superb Mid Size Performance Sedan!!

Having owned this car for a while now, I have to say that is still blows me away. It really has excellent power, on par with my tweaked 320HP Subaru Legacy GT I once owned. Gas mileage is averaging 25mpg in mixed driving, but have seen as high as 28mpg in heavy highway stints which is very good for a nearly 300hp V6. With the sport package the car handles very well with little body roll while still being comfortable. Interior is on par with entry level luxury model like the Infinity G37 and Lexus IS. Ride is quiet making it easy to converse with passengers or to hear audio details in the rather good Bose Stereo. Car is very handsome looking and muscular without looking overdone.

Good car. Better than the 2007 TL that I traded in for. Good ride and comfort. Nothing is wearing out. Only one problem is the front drivers seat is loose and can only be fixed with new parts, which are too expensive so it will stay as it is. Doesn't effect driving, just annoying sometimes.

Dual Sun Roof Disaster

Nothing but problems with my 2011 dual sun (or moon) roof. Last summer car was brand new and in the shop of a month. Well summer is here again and the car is back in the shop. I'm not sure if its the tracks that have a problem when they get heated by the sun but I feel like I got a real lemon. Everything including the roof lining interior has already been replaced once. Here we go again ;-(

overpriced piece of junk. this is by far the worst riding car ive driven or been in. you feel every bump in this car even if the road looks smooth you feel everything, and god forbid you are accelerating when you hit a bump, you better be holding on to the steering wheel with two hands as tight as you can. besides the ride its not a user friendly interior either. the position of the power windows is on the dash toward the left of the steering wheel, making it almost impossible to adjust the mirrors while driving. 36k and no memory seats or heated mirrors?! what a waste of money. horrible gas mileage

Its great for that quick heading to the market, short trips to the country as long as as the roads are dry clear of snow and rain build up. The steering is great at that point, however, when the conditions get wet our icy, no matter how much asked is reduced there is still slippage.

This is a decent all round car which Nisson likes to advertise as sporty. The styling is so/so but the thing that really holds it back is the dreaded continuously variable transmission (CVT) While having just shy of 300 horses the car is a major dog off the line. The CVT makes a loud howling sound but it lacks the snap of a normal tranny. Additionally, handling is mediocore at best. I only kept the car through 20,000 miles but had no mechanical problems. Traded for a leftover 2015 Toyota Avalon, my second one.

Car still runs great after 9 yrs. However, every time it rains , the interior gets soaked. Water either coming through sunroof or windows (both closed tightly). Yes, we unfortunately have no garage and experts have said tree sap has blocked some of the drains that allow flow of rain water out of the car. Dealer wants a fortune to investigate. So we bought full size cover to put on when ot rains

Fun Car

I have only had my car for one day but already a few things I like/dislike. I really love the comfort and power of the car. I have the Prem Package w/ Prem Tech package. The nav is good, not great. Thus far the most disappointing thing is the Voice Activation System. It takes too long to do anything with it. Like, when you press the button, it ask questions and you have to wait until the thing is done talking before you can talk. Then you move to the next level and it ask another series of questions that you have to wait through. Then finally you get to do what you want. They need to add short cuts. I might not be doing it right though. I can't complain though, great car.

Picked up a 2011 Maxima two weeks ago -- Professional Trim. Love it!! Great styling and drivibility. The features - - XM, NAVI, Moon roof, specific driver setting, engine response -- are nice. Car has smooth ride and suspension. Great pick up and power when using the paddle shifters or "manual" shifitng. While I use it primarly for myslef, back seat has been able to comfortable seat 2 back there.

Recently purchased a maxima after driving several other cars, TL, AUDI, BMW, Infiniti. To me it was the best value. I also saved much more off the list price due to dealer incentives and supplier discount I received from my work. This made it the best value for me. It does feel better to drive and much more quite than my TL. Roomier than the others I drove an I like the looks

My second Maxima

Compared to my 2000 Maxima, they fixed the turning radius. The view over the hood is spectacular and the side mirror view is sweet. The acceleration with the CVT is awesome. The transmission is always running in the sweet spot. No engine torque in the steering wheel. The seats fit my 6 foot 3 inch frame and they're heated/cooled for the driver. The iPod interface is perfect, streaming audio or plug into USB to view my music on the NAV display, which also plays DVDs in park mode. On hilly roads, the paddle shifters come in handy for engine braking. I have the Premium addition which is a good balance of sporty feel with comfort every day driving. Nissan hit a home run with this model.

This car is poorly designed in relation to safety features. If you want a safe car, stay away from the 2011 Nissan Maxima's or all Nissan's in general. IF you get into a minor car accident in this vehicle you will have major injuries. This model 2011 Nissan Maxima is defective, unsafe, hazardous, and life threatening. Do not ever buy a 2011 Nissan Maxima, no matter how pretty it seems. Don't ever get in a 2011 Nissan Maxima. Don't drive next to a 2011 Nissan Maxima. Don't let anyone you love or know get into one of these cars. This car is nothing more than a death wish. STAY AWAY!!!!!
