Must Read for Speed3 Owners!
I noticed a black soot material on my tailpipes (which I've since learned is normal for turbocharged cars) but I heard that previous models had issues w/turbo smoking (smoke coming from tailpipe at idle/all engine speeds) & I thought this might be the onset. Videos are online if u Google. Mazda allegedly fixed this in 2010 but there's a "mystery" Tech Service Bulletin (TSB)for service depts to switch owners to 5W-40 synthetic vs. std 5W-30 (what the filler cap & manual says). TSB doesn't apply to 2010 models. My dealer couldn't even find the TSB in their system! Question service depts b/c Mazda N. America doesn't endorse synthetic oil or 5W- 40! Could void warranty b/c manual says 5w-30 oil.
Firecracker
I bought the MazdaSpeed 3 to provide some driving fun. My other car is an Escalade, which is wonderful for long distance trips, but lacks soul. No such problem with the MazdaSpeed 3 - I have had an almost continuous smile on my face since picking it up. I can't get over the combination of handling, performance, comfort and sheer fun in a car costing $25,000. I've had Saab 9000 turbos, a BMW 735iSE, Toyota MR2s and many other great cars but none was nearly as much fun as this. Brilliant.

Fantastic car if you have smooth roads
I owned this car for about a year and had absolutely no issues with it. Added on a couple of goodies (Corksport intake and cat delete, Cobb Accessport) which significantly increased the power without sacrificing MPG or driveability. For the $$ the MS3 really is the performance bargain of the century. Great build quality and reliability, handling, power, it's all there. Don't listen to the weenies who complain about torque steer, it's really not bad or difficult to control. Wheels spinning? STOP PUSHING THE GAS PEDAL. It's not complicated. The only reason I got rid of the car was the ride comfort. We have horrible roads in Ohio with giant potholes and lots of speed bumps so it was just a pain
Black smoke on SPEED3
I bought this attractive, powerful turbo in early August. This was my first Mazda. Within a week, I noticed black carbon build up on entire rear of the car. The exhaust was covered in black soot. The engine performance seemed fine, but I noticed even after warming up, black smoke continued. I am very gentle with the car. I've owned 7 cars in my 24 driving yrs & I've never seen this. Dealership agreed when I returned to have them look at it. After diagnostic testing, they confirmed w/ USA Mazda that the car was operating in normal conditions. Mazda's customer hot line and technical service reps said the same. I'm looking to return this car. I 'd believe it's normal if it was diesel.
Believe the Hype!
Best deal going for the $! Paid $21,900 w/Toyota owner loyalty rebate. Didn't get the tech package but the audio w/std system is great! Single CD is annoying, but BT is awesome. Has built in MP3 plug w/power in center console. Impressed with std opts (dual zone auto A/C, info center w/trip computer, steering wheel cntrls, stainless steel ft pdls). Car is FAST but well behaved on the roads. The turbo kicks in smoothly w/no lag. Downshifts on the highway N/A for passing. Just step on the gas & let the turbo work for you! Tires are VERY loud on the road but grip well in rain. Lights work well at night w/fog opt. Econ-75 mph=27-32 mpg depending upon gradient. Sports car, folks! Not a luxury car.
