CX-90 competes with prestige brands? You betcha!

Purchased the Turbo S Premium model -- 340 HP. I read dozens of professional reviews before test driving locally and buying. Brand new vehicle so you may have to expand your search away from home to find the model / trim that you want. I got the version with captain's chairs in 2nd and 3rd row so mine seats 6. Bench seat also available if you prefer that. Pros: great acceleration with top notch handling and comfortable ride. Soaks up bumps well. Very quiet on highway. Great Bose stereo. I have to disagree with many of the professional reviewers -- I like the scroll wheel interface rather than touch screen -- less distracting. Bought a brand new 2021 Audi Q7 and got rid of it after a year -- great vehicle but I hated the touch screen interface -- Audi not intuitive and very frustrating. I had a 2019 Mazda CX-9 for 4 years and liked the interface - one of the big reasons I was attracted to the CX-90. Cons: as other reviewers have noted - limited space for storage in front cabin and behind 3rd row. Turbo S Premium model that I bought does not have ventilated front seats, so you may want to avoid black interior. Paddle shifters are there, but I prefer to shift with my own with the gear selector as I did my old CX-9 but can't do with the CX-90. Overall, I think that Mazda has hit a home run with this vehicle. Those looking for a prestige brand or more cargo room will definitely look for another brand. But I like it better than the 2021 Audi Q7 that I owned. Dealer experience: Picked up the CX-90 at Huffman Mazda in Louisville, over 100 miles from home to get the model I wanted. Well worth the drive - top notch customer experience, no games, no nonsense customer experience. Finalized a very fair deal via email and phone.

Beautiful but not reliable

There are a ton of pros about this car. It literally checked all the boxes that I didn’t even know I had until driving it. I have just over 6,000 miles on it after owning the Turbo S Premium Plus model for 6 months. I’ll try to keep this short and sweet. The pros are numerous: ride quality, aesthetics, quiet cabin, safety, etc etc. but the cons, though they are few, are now outweighing all that this car has to offer. It’s been in the shop 5 times. Much to Mazda’s credit; the customer service has been phenomenal. But I’m tired of taking it in. The problems I’ve had: Driver side mirror shakes at high speeds on the highway. Which they have replaced but the new one shakes the exact same. Two separate recalls. Minor in nature. Front doors rattling. Fixed by the service department and quiet as a mouse now. Grinding noise heard 100% of the time coming from behind the steering wheel. Which I have to take it in the shop in a couple days. I’ll update after that ordeal. And the biggest one: the transmission is anything but smooth. It is clunky. Jerky, jumps, delays, and down right irritating. To the point where it’s kind of stressful and does not leave one with the feeling that this vehicle is not going to last. I would not recommend it. As nice as it looks. They missed the mark on the transmission and build quality.

Near BMW Performance & Lexus-like Quality

My wife's 17 year old RX 400h has been remarkably reliable, but needed replacement. We cross shopped multiple brands, including the Kia that Edmunds rated a bit higher than the CX 90. In my view that comparison review is valid, but only if your primary use case is as a younger family that needs to haul a soccer team, or if touch screens are more important to you than stopping distances, gas mileage, insurance costs, and quality. Remarkably, the CX 90 PHEV is a driver's car - an actual driver's car that's also a spacious hauler. We were shocked by the excellent handling and tight turning radius, and then I realized that the CX 90 PHEV is a mid engine design! The gas engine and electric motor are both behind the front axle: a "front-mid." For us, better handling, better braking, better quality, a gorgeous interior with properly firm seats, and radically superior fuel economy are a winning combination. A worthwhile tradeoff vs. a few extra cubic feet of space. You should also check insurance rates in your area. Kia/Hundai only added engine immobilizers in 2022, so at least where we live they're still being targetted by thieves and insurance rates here are higher for them. To top it off this is a PHEV that can tow 3500 lbs and run electric for all of our local driving. No other brand offers a PHEV 3 row in our area excepting the much higher priced and (sadly) lower quality Lincoln. In our view Mazda is no longer a direct competitor to Kia, Honda, Hyundai or Toyota - they're offering near BMW performance with Lexus-like quality at lower prices than traditional "luxury" brands. We highly recommend you consider this model.

Purchased mine on 9/25/2023, and, I still have smile on my face. My wife and I are in our mid 70's, no grand kids yet, and, this was the perfect SUV for us. I'm a Mazda fan and still own a 2013 Miata MX5 converitble as my fun in the sun toy. The Preferred Plus trim was perfect of us as we needed a 2nd row bench seat, which is not available on upper trims, for our dogs. 280hp is more than enough power for hwy merging and has ample passing power when needed. Like all Mazdas this is a "drivers vehicle". Great handling, good power, and, the fit and finish is fantastic. Test drove the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and, Hyundai Palisade, which were okay, but none of them drive like this CX90. Yes, those have more cargo space, and, legroom in the 3rd row, but that was not a necessity for us. I traded a 2018 VW Atlas V6 I had for 5 1/2 years and it was cavernous like the other 3 I test drove. However, none of these are a "drivers vehicle" like this CX90. The Turbo charged 3.3 liter at 280hp uses regular gas, and, gets better gas mileage than the others. If you want a midsized SUV that has more than adequate power, fantastic handling, and, the best fit and finish of any vehicle in its price range, the CX90 is a real winner. Especially in the Preferred Plus trim. It's both Zoom Zoom, and, superb handling all in one package. Personally, I don't have a single dislike.

Sporty PHEV 3row SUV

Been a Toyota guy, but after months of trying to buy Grand Highlander max hybrid. With limited availability and once trim line was available, there were added accessories, added cost over $3-4k over MSRP. Started looking at Mazda, didn’t know they made a 3 row SUV, let alone PHEV. Test drove CX-90 PHEV, blew me away. Much nicer interior (luxury) and exterior vs Grand Highlander max interior n exterior. But also Grand Highlander does not have a PHEV ! Living in the city I make many short trips during the week usually under 20 miles a trip. All electric mode range is up to 25-26 miles in CX-90 PHEV. Have had this CX-90 over a month and still haven’t had to stop by gas station to re-fuel. I just plug in CX-90 PHEV every night, next morning battery is fully charged (I normally just charge to 90%) But the driving experience is the best part of this sporty 3row suv vs family suv. Put this CX-90 PHEV in sports mode, it becomes a different beast, it just takes off when you floor it , the steering is so intuitive, you feel really planted to the road, especially on curvy roads. And you honestly forget this is a 3 row suv. This is a 323 HP suv hybrid PHEV not a Tesla. I test drove a Tesla Y extended range, very nice. But for me the Tesla is so plain inside and the exterior design seems really boring. I needed more interior room for my needs. And to my surprise , Mazda blew me away with interior and exterior design. Plus if you want to save $7500 on CX90 PHEV off MSRP go the leasing route, which I did ! Honestly if you haven’t test driven a CX90 , really should give them a test drive. I’m very happy I did !

CX-90 Turbo S Prem Plus in Artisan Red and Tan Int

20,000 mile update: Coming up on 2yrs ownership. My full review below still holds true. ALL the 'new for 2024' features still impress me, the fuel mileage is still 24city/29.5+ highway, and we still love the look/interior/engine-trans. After 1yr using Premium fuel, we began only using Regular Unleaded with no real change perceived in performance AND it makes me smile at the pump to use the lowest-cost gas when my neighbors are pumping premium. Only downside to ownership is the many recalls of this 'first-year' model AND that our local Mazda Dealer has totally FAILED in providing and "upscale, luxury ownership experience". I am very happy with our new 2024 CX-90 which replaced a destroyed 2018 CX-9 Signature (Auburn Leather interior). Bought one of the 1st ones in GA on Mar31st, '23. Have driven 1,300 miles in the 2 months I have owned it and done both sporty driving and one long, 200mile, roadtrip at 60-80mph the whole drive. 25mpg combined and 29.5mpg highway! I will be brutally fair in my likes and dislikes: LIKES: 1. This 3.3L Inline6 turbo and new 8spd auto tranny are a gem! Powerful and smooth, 340hp with Premium gas BUT the owners can choose to fill with Regular and power only drops to 319hp and no change in the 369lb-ft torque! 2. That large glass pano roof is great and it should have been on the later CX-9s too. 3. At the top trims ($59K+) the Tan or white interiors are amazing (at lower trims I would have wanted the "Greige"). My Tan interior with exclusive 2-tone leather wheel is very upscale. 4. Heated and cooled seats in ALL Capt chairs (4!). 5. The Driver Personalization features and the sporty way this SUV drives makes me smile everyday, wow. DISLIKES (well, I dont really dislike anything...so these are just "misses" for the Mazda engineers); 1. The seats are FIRM (good for sporty driving) but my CX-9 Signature was a good bit more comfortable when driving over an hour. 2. Very little room for your feet in 3rd row IF you have 2nd row Capt chairs. Having the center console in 2nd row makes this situation even worse. 3. The Pano roof only opens up about 6 or 7 inches...should be TWICE that since this vehicle is so large. 4. The best real wood accents are ONLY offered in the White interior AND only if you are at Turbo S PP trim (max trim level at $61,000+). The other trims (including mine) have a darker, more "processed" wood trim which actually doesnt look natural AND has been reviewed as fake wood applique by reviewers (even though Mazda USA confirmed my Tan interior had real wood). Either way, this brown CX-90 wood looks fake and my CX-9 Signature had MUCH nicer interior wood. 5. The rear window glass doesnt roll all the way down into the door! Now I KNOW you cannot push a big piece of glass into a small space AND the rear wheel well is the reason it cannot go fully down, I get that...but at $66,000 including tax, youd better ENGINEER it so it disappears, period. Otherwise charge me 40,000 dollars for this CX-90 so I dont feel bad when I roll down the rear window and it feels like I am in a KIA Minivan because my window stops 3/4 of the way down. These small dislikes are VERY minor compared to the GREAT driving experience and this hot new Inline6 turbo motor! I smile every time I drive it fast and every time I gas up and see I got 25, 26, or 27mpg on that tank while my neighbors are getting 16-19 in their 6 and 7 seaters. THANK YOU Mazda!

I have owned my CX-90 Preferred Plus for several weeks driving it so I now am able to provide some perspective. I traded in a 2020 Honda Passport. Similar horse power but different torque. Quarks.....The main thing that I have to get used to is the Hybrid system of how it starts the car going. Not necessarily something that bothers me but something that is different and has to get accustomed to because is is a bit jittery for a brief moment getting going. Charging pad is a bit sensitive to make sure you get your phone just right. Not a ton of storage space for stuff. Likes....Driving dynamics are simply awesome. Steering, braking, acceleration very responsive. Interior is well put together with nice touches even at my lower trim. This car is way more responsive than the Honda Passport with similar horsepower. I know the torque is what is really pushing this but still what a difference. Ride quality is nice with pretty comfy seats (I am 6'1 and a bit on the larger size:) with no issues in the seats. Quite interior, good ample outlets. 3 row seats are usable which is all I cared about since I am not putting someone back there all the time. Bottom line...if you value driving dynamics over utilitarianism than the CX-90 might be a good option. If you want more loading space there are better options. Updated after 20K driving. No issues, still a great car to drive.

Mazda CX-90 is this a Lexus?

Here is what I like: Great adaptive cruise control! Nice comfortable and good looking seats. Nice sound system. Nice MPG for such a large vehicle. Good looking vehicle. Well functioning climate control. Ride is quiet although not BMW quiet. What could be better: Acceleration from a stop. Takes a while to get going. Front air vents are curved towards the door. Be careful that you don’t bang your knee getting in the front seats. Price is a bit high.

We had been shopping Acura, Cadillac, BMW, Honda, Infiniti, Lexus, and Lincoln for over a year. and the new Mazda CX-90 blew them away. Much higher reliability and build quality. A sporty luxury SUV, with Second row heated captains chairs and cargo room behind them with third row down. No need for the turbo S, the regular turbo gives this stylish SUV 320 lbs of torque immediately on regular gas, I can always drive in sport mode if I need a ticket. We visited our local dealership and test drove the CX-90 in Artisan Red, with Turbo Premium Plus options. The first one they received. Test drove it and bought it immediately. It’s a big AWD turbo Miata. We’ve had it for a month love the looks and handling. Our kids love the captains chairs.

Major repair with less than 5K miles

We purchased the CX90 to replace a 2023 CX5 in order to have more room and a better ride. This is our 7th Mazda we have purchased since 2006 and have always enjoyed reliable vehicles. This one is not fitting within that category. When we took the vehicle in for its 5K oil change and a software update, the technician noted a leaking drivers side differential seal. This repair has now taken over 3 weeks and the dealer has informed us that obtaining the parts and special tools to complete the repair could take months. This is not the quality of vehicle or the service of vehicles I have come to expect from Mazda. Mazda Customer Support has been contacted and they are working on a solution.

From Acura MDX to Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus

My son is a new driver... The family Acura MDX has carried us safely on many adventures for well over 180,000 miles and now it is his safe passage for the future. The “trade-off” is that I have to take on a car payment once again, however, the CX-90 PHEV Prem Plus has not disappointed and has proven to be worth its price tag! We have already taken it on a trip over 500 miles, through rain and snow with no issues aside from the bumper sensors being temporarily blinded by road spray and dirt. The electric ride is smooth, and the sport mode is useful to get around slow moving vehicles on single lane, country roads (of course in safe passing zones). I look forward to driving it for years to come, but am admittedly nervous at the level of technology built into the first year vehicle that could pose long-term concerns - time will tell.

Love the CX-90 PHEV A LOT

I sold my previous Lincoln Corsair GT due to the recall on the engine fires. Decided too long to wait for a solution. Started looking and placed an order for the 2023 Cadillac XT4 Sport but 2 months later the dealer had not even placed the order with the factory because of allocations. Terrible experience. Turned to Mazda after finding the CX-90 PHEV in Artisan Red with white interior. Stunning interior and love the incredible red paint which changes colors based on light and curves in the design. Love it. The ride is incredible and super quiet due to the double pane glass. The gas mileage includes 28 miles of EV miles and that covers most daily trips for me. So, I'm getting eMPG of 76 which is incredible. I fill up maybe three times a year. The car has been superb since we moved and were able to load up a lot by lowering all the seats. Better than a pickup truck in my opinion. I have really been impressed with the Mazda sales process since the sales reps are not paid commission but straight salary. They get bonuses though but they are not desperate like some car sales reps are. They are more like Tesla in their behavior. The sales process was great and I had no bickering and got the car I wanted the day I picked it out. Was incredibly smooth and stress free. After getting the car, I researched Mazda's history and focus on engineering. Mazda uses a much thicker steel when creating the car and their paint process is well known as unique in the industry due to the levels of paint they do. I am really impressed with their plug in hybrid technology which I believe is helped by their Toyota relationship (Toyota owns 10% of Mazda and Mazda uses Toyota Finance). I'm quite impressed with Toyota since they lead the world in hybrid technology and was glad to find out of their relationship to Toyota. Update 6 months later. Superb car. No complaints and only praises.

Mazda zoom zoom frustration

I have owned several Mazda vehicles: CX7, CX9, 626 and now the CX-90. By far the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Purchased the first vehicle and not even 30 days in the car would stall and not start. Took the vehicle in to dealer and when I picked it up it staled again and I told them I wanted a new vehicle. The vehicle was changed out and now I have a Mazda that has had 7 recalls in 6 months not to mention the fact that the vehicle stalls when I accelerate and need speed to turn or get our of harms way. The vehicle also stall and speed drops from 60 to 40 instantly and takes about a minute or two to pick up speed again. The worst part of the vehicle is when I turn right or left or go up onto my driveway the loud sounds it makes something like old springs on a bad mattress. The car has been in the shop and Mazda cannot figure out what is wrong with it. This is my third attempt to repair and nothing. I have been in contact with my dealer Sports Mazda South in Longwood as well as Mazda Corporate and noting has been done. I purchase a new vehicle so that I would not have the problems that come with a used vehicle only to be in a worse predicament. As a former true believer in the Mazda brand I will no longer purchase a Mazda because they do not stand behind their product!!

My first year model Mazda CX-90 was a dud!

My 2024 Mazda CX-90 Turbo Preferred was back to the dealers over 20 times in only 3200 miles! It had issues for the major recalls including loss of power steering while we were on a trip. I had to deal with this steering for over 425 miles until we returned home. It had --2-- new 12V starter batteries replaced (a 3rd new battery was installed) until Mazda finally figured out all of the batteries had been undercharging due to buggy software. That issue included a dead battery (#2) only 2 weeks after it was installed and right in my driveway one morning. The low battery (and loud) alerts continued to show up far too many times even after that issue was finally resolved. Other issues were defective rear radar sensors and what seemed like an odd AWD sensation where it just would not seem to hold the grade of road smoothly without a lot of minor steering wheel correction left and right. This was more pronounced at highway speeds. (the gas only AWD I have now tracks perfectly on all road grades, unlike my CX-90 did). The list goes on. Well, at 3500 miles on the ODO I finally had enough and I traded it in for a gasoline only vehicle (not a Mazda!). This experience made me a Hybrid hater, at least for the time being. Mazda's reputation for excellence won't be affiliated with this new first-year model. My CX-90 was one of the first off the assembly line (manufactured late 2023) and thus, had the full gamut of issues due to Mazda design failures, faulty vendor components and many software issues/bugs. The dealer was great to assist, but, as I told them, they were held responsible trying to fix my lemon told to me through Mazda and I had a whooper of a buggy CX-90 right from the start of ownership. When I informed the dealership I'd traded it in elsewhere, they seemed relieved and also a number of their employees said they fully understood why I did that.

2024 CX-90 Low Hybrid worst vehicle we've owned...

We owned a newly purchased CX-5 and it had zero issues. We then traded it in 2 years later for a more spacious 2024 Cx-90 Low Hybrid. Issues began at only 250 miles on the Odo. Low main battery issues, including dead battery, and constant annoying low battery warnings on dash and through speaker system. We had the power steering fail during a trip and had to drive with a disabled power steering for over 350 miles until we got home. We had both rear radar sensors replaced because they failed. Our dealer replaced the stock battery twice and we were on our 3rd new battery with only 3500 miles on the odo. Mazda tech support finally figured out the alternator and regulator was undercharging the batteries that had died. It took 7+ visits to get the batteyr issue finally resolved. We had every recall Mazda had for our VIN. Finally at 3800 miles on this car, I'd had enough of the dash warning (drive vehicle to charge battery) as that kept coming up all of the time. The dealer did so many software updates, I honestly lost count unless I looked through my stack of invoices. I ended up trading my new 2024 CX-90 for another make that was gas only. I'd had enough of the many tech issues that Hybrids have plus one lemon of a hybrid that Mazda introduced far too early with many issues along with it. While Mazda is considered a reliable brand, that will not hold true at all for it's Hybrids, be it the low Hybrid I had or the PHEV plug-in either which has even more issues than mine did. Given the recently introduced Mazda 2025 CX-90 has already had one or more serous recalls, it's "here we go again" with this risky model. Avoid the CX-90 altogether until a model year comes along where the vehicle proves to be far more reliable. ...and 2025 isn't going to be that year!

I have a platinum plus phev. The look of the interior is fantastic. All the info, nav, phone. Android auto ac. Settings simple and easy to use and clever. Live the seats. Love the ac. The battery ev is the only disappointment. 26 miles gets used quickly. Driving in Normal balances it out. I needed a bigger vehicle for my big gorgeous dog, beach equipment etc. I like luxury and needed space mazda does not add 5k surcharge ir dealer ad on. I love my new car

Mazda really dropped the ball on this vehicle just to get a 2024 on the market in 2023. There have been numerous recalls on this new vehicle. I have spent more than 20+ hours waiting in the service center waiting area while new parts or reprogramming had to be done. This is not normal Mazda quality control. No one should have to go through this on a new vehicle. Shame on you Mazda

Bought brand new From the start problem with the on board computer. Engine light on. Infotainment center screen had to be replaced 7 recalls within 6 months from purchase. Had to re- program on board computer. Left suspension noise. It has to be replaced. Waiting for the part Driver mirror vibrates at high speed. It will have to be replaced Waiting for new one.! Electric wires tubing covers are based on a soy component plastic that attracts rodents. Car in the shop for wires replacement. Again no parts. Infotainment system is outdated with no touch screen features. I would not recommend buying a Mazda CX90. Servicing the cars also takes for ever. We will sell this one at a loss when out of the shop.

This vehicle was absolutely rushed to market and without proper testing. Outside...beautiful. Horsepower and handling (2nd gear and above)…beautiful. The interior is luxurious looking at first glance but there are so many reflective surfaces that while driving in the FL sun....it is actually hard to see at times…especially trying to use the side mirrors. Don’t get the white interior if you do buy this vehicle. The heads-up display...pointless during the day with sunglasses on. It is not bright enough to see it. The transmission is so clunky that the first thing that you have to do every time that you get into the vehicle is disable the i-stop by a hidden button down low under the steering wheel and out of sight. If you leave i-stop enabled, the car shuts off for like 10 seconds at stops and then starts again. Owners manual says that a complicated algorithm determines how long to leave the engine off as not to disrupt the AC and power usage inside the car. They did not test this vehicle in a hot climate. Aside from pointless wear and tear of restarting the engine, the i-stop makes using first gear even clunkier / more jerky. Literally, first gear is like a 16 year old learning to drive a clutch. The salesperson has a fancy explanation about all of the technology and passive hybrid systems kicking in as the car starts to move. I've complained to Mazda Service Managers numerous times and the response was....it is a clutch system and not a continuous variable transmission (aka...nothing can be done about it). In the last 15 months, the car has had 7 or 8 recalls…I’ve lost count. The latest is the radar system mistakes phantom objects ahead and suddenly brakes causing rear end accidents. My CX90 has suddenly braked on the highway while in radar assist cruise control when a vehicle is slightly ahead and in the lane next to you. Even worse if it is a tractor trailer. My canned response to my wife's hairy eye-ball is...."it was the car...not me." The car's software has MAJOR bugs....MAJOR. The worst being that while driving on the highway at high speeds....the I-Active system randomly crashes for 20-30 miles until it can reboot itself or you pull over and restart the vehicle. While the I-Active system is down, you lose several safety systems like 360 degree alert of nearby cars, blind spot monitoring in side mirrors and other crash prevention systems. Basically, your top of the line, technology packed, 5 star safety rated SUV is now a bare-bones vehicle with huge blind spots while driving high speeds on the highway. I’m a software developer and have pinpointed the issue thru trial and error as speed related and taking in too much information through sensors. If you stay out of the fast line and drive the posted speed limits…it crashes far less. I took pictures of the dash showing the error “i-ACTIVESENSE temporarily disabled. Rear side radar obscured. Drive safely” and how it was perfectly sunny outside…no obstructions like rain or mud. I even took pictures while on a road trip to show the error/mileage of how often it crashes and when it finally reboots while driving at high speeds on the highway. I left the vehicle in the shop for weeks so Mazda Engineering could investigate. Their response was “no error codes are written to the computer so they cannot debug it.” Hello…I showed you pictures of the error messages. The shop manager searched the internet and other CX90 owners are reporting the same. Still no software fix. Still no acknowledgement of the problem. Next step is to report this problem to NHTSA to hopefully force a recall on it. Facial recognition software...seriously flawed. 9/10 times it doesn’t recognize you and defaults to Guest so you have to go through the menu system to pick your name to get your personalized car settings like seat position, steering wheel, dash layout, radio station, etc. Apparently, Mazda may have fix for the facial recognition glitch…we’ll see. Infotainment software...Satellite Radio locks up and fails to start or play at times. You either have to restart the vehicle to reboot the system or you have to keep changing Entertainment Sources to get Sirius to work again. Mechanically…only a few issues to report. The driver side mirror vibrating has been fixed once and still vibrates a little. Doesn’t sound too bad until you look into your rear-view mirror glass and the cars are blurry. The front suspension creaks like a rusty spring coming out of your driveway. Mazda’s fix….a little grease for now. With just 9K miles on the vehicle the rear brakes squeal. Embarrassing when you are in a drive thru line in a $60K SUV and people are looking at your high pitch squeals. Plastics on the rear tail gate come loose. Mazda’s fix…a little adhesive for now vs improving the clasps holding it on. BTW…it is loose again. Another reviewer commented on how Mazda USA is trying to right the ship with the CX90 and provide good customer service. I completely disagree. They are in damage control mode watching their luxury debut flounder. In total…my CX90 has been in the shop for 2 months across the various recalls and complaints. Two months paying for a vehicle to sit in the shop. I called up Mazda USA customer service back in March going back and forth with them on the I-ActiveSense crashing and my frustrations. As a courtesy for paying for a vehicle to sit in the shop, Mazda approved a refund of 2 lease payments to offset the inconveniences. It is now August and Mazda USA still has not refunded the lease payments to me. I’ve called and complained to the case worker numerous times. Their responses have been…the finance department is backed up, it takes a while to process, it now takes 16 WEEKS to process a refund [early April to late August is now 18 weeks and counting], and they have assured me that it has been escalated. I bought the CX90 when it first debuted because my Mazda6 lease was expiring. I wanted luxury for my next lease and the CX90 looked good. About 5 months after signing the lease, Mazda USA drops the MSRP by $5k. Thank you for being a loyal Mazda customer but we are going to instantly devalue the equity in the luxury car by another $5k but leave your lease as is. My advice to potential buyers….DO NOT buy a Mazda as their quality is on a downward spiral and especially DO NOT buy a CX90 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus fully loaded luxury vehicle. I have leased 2014, 2018, 2020 Mazda6’s, my wife had a 2018 CX5, my kids had Mazda 3’s. Each year the cars progressively get worse to own and software gets worse each year. Thankfully, I lease them and can give them back. My next lease / buy will not be a Mazda. Hopefully my review saves a potential buyer from future headaches and the lack of support from the brand. #NoLongerLoyalMazdaCustomer.

CX-90 needed more quality control before being rel

Right from picking up my new CX-90 from the dealership the problems began. First it was a radar sensor error code which didn't allow the adaptive cruise or lane centering to work- that required 3 visits to the dealership to get fixed. Now the adaptive cruise works but is pointless as any slight turn in the road the vehicle will slam on the brakes. Transmission started jumping shortly after, no fix available. Steering wheel locks up on the highway requiring you to use force to steer the other way (2 visits to service with no fix), heated seats stopped working, and the list goes on. I ended up returning the lease early as I couldn't fathom the idea of driving it for 3.5 more years. Mazda you can do better. You make great vehicles but why wouldn't you have put more effort and quality control into the CX-90? Unfortunate because it's one of the best looking 3 row SUVs!

I leased the new CX90 less than two months ago. It’s a beautiful car, and an attention grabber. My family loves it because it’s extremely comfortable. BUT it already has issues. Less than a week after getting it, it started with a noise when accelerating. A little more than a month after the car seemed to get stuck in first gear when I made a turn. It happened twice. I took it into the dealer for service, and they seem to think it’s a transmission issue that needs an update. Could this be a recall issue? Maybe. Let’s see what happens. Not a good experience when a brand new car gives you issues so early into driving it.

So far so good. I waited for more inventory to show up at dealerships and have researched the two powertrains extensively. I am more used to the inline v6 type of engine, but with the $7500 rebate on the lease for the PHEV that I got on the front end to help with my trade...I took the leap. This morning I didn't have the battery fully charged...it had only charged itself to 7miles...but it was a seamless transition when the motor kicked in. I am hoping with a full charge, the mileage will be fantastic for my daily commute. The interior is GORGEOUS and I have owned Acura, BMW, Mercedes, Infiniti and Lexus! I have the PHEV Premium package and it is very well loaded and has so much space. It also is just enough wider than my QX60 to make it more comfortable. Very well built and beautiful finishes!

Do your research. The CX90 PHEV has major hybrid issues. I leased this car in September and 3 weeks ago with only 5k miles on it I had a major hybrid system failure and had to have the car towed. Took all day and Mazda Roadside wanted to charge me. Its been in the shop for three weeks and they say it needs a new hybrid battery but they are back ordered and have no timeframe on when it will get back. I got a CX30 loaner but they are still charging me the full $570 a month lease payment. I called Mazda Financial and all they said they could do is defer 22 months payment to the end of the lease FOR A FEE!!! I have put a sop payment on all future payments and have begun the process of filing a lemon law claim against Mazda. Look at the CX90 forum they are having all kinds of issues with this car and their customer service is HORRIBLE. Do not get this car! You have been warned!

Not for families drives like an 85 beetle & fails

I was a Mazda fan for years, having owned multiple models, including the CX-5 and CX-9. Most recently, I had the CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus for 1.5 years. Initially, I was thrilled—the styling, luxurious interior, and the promise of PHEV efficiency made me feel like I had made a great choice. But over time, the cracks started to show—this vehicle is a case study in engineering misplaced priorities. Mazda Focused on Everything Families Don’t Need If you’re buying a three-row SUV for family use, ask yourself this: Do your passengers care about a double-wishbone suspension? Do they care that you’re “one with the car” while driving? Or do they care about comfort, space, reliability, and ease of ownership? Mazda prioritized “driving dynamics” over what actually matters to families, and in the end, they failed to deliver an SUV that works for real life. Safety is excellent (the only positive). Crash test ratings are strong, and that’s the only area where this SUV shines. Everything Else is a Problem: Cramped Third Row & Tight Cargo Space – Families need room for kids, luggage, and gear. The CX-90 fails miserably in providing functional space. Hard, Uncomfortable Seats for Long Trips – The seat cushions feel like stiff foam, making long trips a painful experience. Rough Ride & Heavy Steering – Instead of a smooth, family-friendly ride, Mazda created a stiff, jittery, uncomfortable drive that feels like a 1985 Volkswagen Beetle. An SUV That You Serve—Instead of It Serving You Mazda designed this vehicle like a high-maintenance luxury item rather than a functional SUV. The PHEV System Isn’t Worth It You must charge it daily for minimal fuel savings (at best, I saved about $1 per day on a 30-mile commute). If you don’t charge it, the fuel economy isn’t great—you’re carrying a heavy battery for no real benefit. Winter shrinks EV range to 17 miles, making the plug-in system even less useful. The electric motor sounds like a toy RC car—this SUV doesn’t feel refined or premium. Tires Wear Out Too Fast Due to the extra weight from the battery, tires wear faster than usual. You’ll be replacing tires sooner than expected, wiping out any fuel savings. Mazda’s Dealer Network is Limited Nearest Mazda service centers are often an hour away—that’s a problem if you need repairs. Most parts come from Japan, meaning longer wait times for replacements. Even under warranty, you’ll waste time and money traveling for service. 10 Recalls in 1.5 Years—and Counting My CX-90 never failed on me, but it had 10 recalls in just 18 months. Software updates will continue—because that’s how software works. Power loss while driving was a real issue (recall issued, but more could come). Driving Experience: The Worst of Both Worlds Mazda wanted to blend sportiness with family practicality, but instead, they failed at both. Drives Like a 1985 Volkswagen Beetle – You feel every bump, crack, and imperfection in the road. The suspension is stiff, the ride is harsh, and the steering is heavier than it should be. Cruise Control is Jumpy – Lower gears feel jerky and unrefined, like a manual transmission driven by a beginner. Not Fun, Not Comfortable – If you want a sporty drive, this isn't it. If you want a family SUV, this isn’t it either. Hidden Costs: What Mazda Won’t Tell You EV & PHEV Registration Fees – In some states, PHEVs have extra registration fees to offset lost gas tax revenue. Higher Electricity Costs = No Real Savings – At $2.50/gal gas, the savings are nearly wiped out. Insurance & Repairs Will Be Expensive – This is a low-production vehicle with imported parts. If you plan to keep it long-term, expect repair costs to be high. Final Verdict: Don’t Waste Your Hard-Earned Money on This Gimmick If you’re looking for a reliable family SUV, look elsewhere. Yes, it’s safe. Yes, it looks nice. But it’s unreliable. It’s cramped. It’s uncomfortable. It prioritizes engineering gimmicks over real-world usability. This vehicle is Mazda’s attempt at proving they can build an over-engineered SUV—but they forgot about the people actually buying it. Don’t waste your time and money. There are better SUVs out there that actually serve families, not just look good in marketing materials. Whatever you do, if you have a family, DO NOT buy the CX-90 on either versions

Watch The Car Care Nut Reviews of 2024 CX-90 and pay very close attention what he has to say about their engine and mechanical end. We have owned this for 8 months now have taken it in twice after 4 months, engine is making a low noise its faint and is coming from the engine rear where the chains are., Mechanics keep saying oh don’t worry just the noise engine makes, well it was nice and perfect for 4 months now it's making noises. Asked about a block heater reply was they have not built one yet and are working on it, oh and it's going to cost me 800 to have it installed plus parts. In the dead of winter car heater does not get interior very warm, again oh that’s just the way car runs they say. Take note no alternator it regens from your electric motor sandwiched in the transmission. Oh, and the coolant pump is an electric pump. Majority of engine repairs will require engine to be pulled which will require majority of your front clip required to be removed to pull the engine. The front drive axels go through oil pan like a BMW any front-end repairs will cost big money as the engine needs to be pulled to make some of the repairs. if oil pan has a gasket leak need to pull and drop front end to repair an oil leak. I need to replace my windshield and the cheapest I can find was 1200 all the way up to 1800 quote say windshield is expensive then they need to verify calibration of sensors. Purchased the Mazda heavy duty weather floor mats what a joke the price of them not worth it. Mazda will also talk you into under car corrosion spray this was before I found out the car has a skid plate from front to back so there is nothing to spray. Had to shut the fuel saver shut car off at red lights off because it was sometimes cutting out and not restarting. Turn the lane departure system off because it’s so aggressive if driving in the winter you will end up in the ditch or accident, forgot to turn signal light on once when using an off ramp that it jerked me so hard almost side swiping another car. Mazda has had 10 recalls in the first year for this car. Overall nice inside feels to have a solid firm ride but that’s where everything ends consider other options.

This car is great to drive. Our trips are usually around town (Waco). There are a couple of trips per month per month to Dallas, Austin, Kerrville. The car’s responsive sport feature kicks its acceleration up a notch. It is most useful for on-ramps and passing and is easily engaged. From about 40 to 90 it pulls solidly and does not run out of oomph as other cars do, it just goes. The ride is comfortable, smooth. It does not wallow. It feels planted at speed, and feels sure footed in turns. The interior is comfortable, and longer travels do not tire us out. The front row is spacious, shoulder, leg, and headroom is plentiful - much bigger than other midsizers. The second row is spacious. The third row is described as cramped - we use the third row occasionally - it is for grandkids not adults, and that suits us. The Bose audio is one of the better systems at this price level. After seven months of use, we still exclaim after we finish a trip: ‘That is a good car.’ We are pleased. Definitely would get another CX-90.

Mazda CX-90 Prem Plus Low Hybrid a lemon for us...

25+ visits to our dealer over 8 months and only 3300 miles on it as purchased new. We had every recall it had actually occur and got every one of these corrected at dealer through several visits. Big issue, 100% dead 12v battery in driveway. Over MANY visits, our dealer put in a 3rd new 12V starter battery since the new battery was still failing in only 3-4 weeks of use. Finally on 3rd battery, dealer and Mazda tech figured out the battery was being grossly undercharged due to a software issue. That finally got fixed at the expense of far too many returns to the dealer for this serious issue. After all of this, the loud and annoying low battery alert and dash warnings still continued to occur almost every day, even with sufficient driving done daily. Dealer said it was normal, ya, right. We had had enough of this Hybrid in only 8 months of ownership and we felt we could not depend upon it for a long trip and traded it in at a $10K loss for another make of vehicle that was gas-only. That gas only vehicle has performed flawlessly with zero returns to our dealer for anything. The 2025 Mazda CX-90s are again being recalled for many issues. This model should be avoided until Mazda figures out a lot of things it should have before releasing this new model in 2024. The CX-90 is sure to blemish what was a clean record in general for Mazda. The CX-90s are a dud, period! Avoid or flip a coin on any decent reliability, if you choose to get one! Also, consider that the much greater technical complexity of using a Hybrid over a gas only vehicle, may come at cost of reliability over time. While our gas-only SUV does not get the higher MPG that our CX-90 had, it was greatly worth getting a vehicle we could depend upon 100% of the time and know it would not let us down when we needed to rely on it.

Cx90 Review

Elegant car, sturdy drive, and feels safe. The ride is smooth and quiet. Tons of updates with the panoramic moonroof and phev option. I have 2 cons with the vehicle: 1.) Phev should have a minimum of 50 miles or more. I had a Jeep wrangler with the same opportunity. 2.) Pano moonroof only open 9 inches, give or take Other than that I would’ve given it 10 stars out of 5!!! :)

I test drove many 2 and 3 row SUVS and just loved the CX90. It is quick, comfortable, and very good looking. The fit and finish is stellar, lots of soft surfaces the interior has a high class feel. The infotainment system has lots of features but is not intuitive to set up. I hope with daily use it will become easier. Mazda hit a home run.

CX-90 PHEV - Good start, but Mazda omits stuff

I traded out of a 2021 CX-5 to begin tiptoeing into electrification (and a larger vehicle). The 2024 CX-90 PHEV looked really good, so I grabbed a Premium Plus about 2 months ago. The vehicle itself is quintessential Mazda. It's definitely a driver's vehicle with its rear-drive bias, taut suspension and driveability, interior and exterior attention to quality and beautiful build quality. The 30-mile electric range works well for me 95% of the time, and the ICE engine means no range anxiety. I have no patience for a forced 30-45 minute break on long trips to recharge a full EV would impose so this is a great alternative. The transition from EV to ICE is transparent once you exceed its EV-only range. One (or a few) nit(s): Mazda had the chance to make the Premium Plus PHEV its flagship, but left out some things I like: Adaptive headlights (had them in the CX-5 and loved them), auto-lowering rear-view mirrors when backing up, and iStop cancellation. None of these are show-stoppers for me, but Mazda, add them! Driving experience is wonderful, be it highway cruising, backroads carving, or ordinary-day driving. One issue I've had (but dealer is working) is an error message at the end of a long trip that told me there was a fuel malfunction, that locked me out of refilling my gas tank. This error has not recurred and my dealer is working with Mazda to investigate. I'm comfortable with first-year problems being the source. Overall, I am very happy with with my purchase. Mazda's CX-90 is a great flagship model and the PHEV is a great variant to consider!

Hybrid battery and parts not available

I bought cx90 preferred plus in last july 2023. Unfortunately I damaged underneath by hitting with something under while driving.which hit on hybrid battery and it’s damaged.my insurance covered this repair cost. But problem is they dont have any Hybrid battery.my SUV sitting on the dealers parking lot since October 2023.even though they dont know when its will be available. I m very disappointed about it. My question if u don’t have parts/battery available. Why you sell its to customer. Accident can be happen to anyone anytime. I look forward to someone from mazda customer care, who can help me out to fix my SUV and get the hybrid battery asap. I am very unhappy with Mazda purchased.

Fun and Efficient

First of all, this vehicle is not going to be a minivan replacement like some mid-size SUVs. If you want that you are better off looking at a Pilot or a Highlander whose main purpose is move lots of people and stuff in comfort. Mazda prioritizes driving performance and interior and exterior design, and like most Mazdas the CX-90 PHEV excels in those areas. I am loving the plug in feature. I am averaging 33 miles of pure electric driving per charge, well above the advertised 26. Of course, that will depend on weather. We live in a relatively warm part of the country, so that helps. After 4,000 miles and 3 months I have not had a single issue with this vehicle, but it is a brand new model, so we shall see. Overall, the build quality is impressive, the materials are a step above what you will with competitors, and it maintains a fun to drive character even in a larger vehicle. Very pleased.

Everyone forget to mention the Rebates !

I am not going to talk about how the car preforms or the looks inside or outside. The other reviews do that well enough, what i like to mention is the Federal and State rebates. Is the great value verses non PHEV's. I was serious going to lease a MDX Type-S, but with that price around $75K and with no discounts available, I decided to relook at the CX90 PHEV. Coming from a CX9, I was constantly receiving emails on offers and rebates from Mazda. When I discovered the $7,500 rebate from the Federal and the State ( Colorado ) of $5,350, I was like " what am I a fool " this rebate is plus the Mazda's rebates and what you can negotiate from the dealer to reduce the MSRP. How's $60K MSRP to $ 42K selling price. Please everyone check out your Mazda's or other PHEV online with your local dealers before heading down there. Also check if your State offer any EV rebates.

After owning my CX-90 Preferred Plus for several weeks and driving it extensively, I can now provide some insights. I traded in a 2020 Honda Passport with similar horsepower but different torque. Here are some observations: Quirks: The main adjustment for me has been to the hybrid system and how it starts the car. It's not necessarily bothersome, but it's different and requires some getting used to. The initial moment of getting going can feel a bit jittery. The charging pad is a bit sensitive, requiring precision in placing your phone. There's not an abundance of storage space for personal items. Likes: The driving dynamics of the CX-90 are truly impressive. The responsiveness of steering, braking, and acceleration is excellent. The interior is well-designed with thoughtful touches, even in my lower trim model. The car is notably more responsive than the Honda Passport with similar horsepower, thanks to the torque factor. Ride quality is comfortable, and the seats are accommodating, even for someone of my stature (6'1"). The interior is quiet, and there are ample outlets for convenience. The three-row seats are usable, which meets my needs as I don't frequently have passengers in the back. Bottom Line: If you prioritize driving dynamics over utility, the CX-90 could be a compelling option. However, if you require more loading space, there may be better alternatives. Overall, the CX-90 has impressed me with its performance, and I appreciate its unique features despite some initial quirks.

Not worth the $$$ - DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS VEHICLE!

At 7500 miles I am currently sitting in the dealership waiting on an oil change, and have the following complaints: 2 days ago while driving about 60mph the vehicle began jerking and hesitating and continued to do this from acceleration to faster speeds throughout the day. 2 days prior to that, it was making a loud squealing noise while driving in stop and go traffic for about 3 miles. The brakes are squealing and have been for the last 1,000 miles. There’s the sound of an air leak in the passenger side door that can be heard loudly while driving. The drivers seat is uncomfortable. The car makes a loud beeping noise when backing up which I personally do not like and there’s no way to turn off. I owned a 2021 Ford Explorer prior to purchasing this vehicle and can say this Mazda CX-90 does not even compare considering it’s in the same price range and size as the Explorer. I would highly recommend reconsidering before purchasing this vehicle. I have plans to trade this vehicle very soon to go back to a Ford Explorer. Also, the guy in the service department (Charleston, SC) was very nonchalant regarding my complaints. I will be sure everything is documented before I leave in case the problems escalate further before I’m able to trade it in.

(MUST READ) Great car but bit outdated

2024 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo Preferred 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)

To be honest, I believe this mid-size SUV is the most aesthetically pleasing option on the market. I purchased this vehicle on September 30th and have been driving it for about ten days, covering approximately 400 miles. I hope my feedback proves useful for those in search of a mid-size SUV. I've test drove, Pathfinder, Pilot, Telluride, and Palisade before purchasing this car. My budget was $50,000 including tax, and all documentation fees. Before I've bought this car, after I haved tested cars based on my budget. Handling: 5 Stars The handling of this SUV is exceptional, and I consider it the best in its class. I haven't come across any mid-size SUVs with better handling than the CX-90. Acceleration & Driving: 4 Stars At low speeds, this car's mild-hybrid system can sometimes feel a bit unnatural when shifting gears automatically. Given that this is Mazda's first foray into mild hybrid technology, I can understand the initial quirks. I'm confident that they will make improvements in tuning for the 2025 model to rectify this issue. On the flip side, when it comes to accelerating to higher speeds, it excels and stands as the best in its category. Interior: 4 Stars The interior design is absolutely stunning. However, its practicality leaves something to be desired. When using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, placing your smartphone or key fob in the center console can be a bit inconvenient. This also means you can't use the cup holders for your beverages while driving. In comparison, the Kia Telluride offers more convenient solutions for storing your phone and keys. Infotainment: 2 Stars I understand that higher trim levels have a touch screen, but it's exclusively for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The infotainment system in this Mazda is subpar when compared to Japanese or Korean brands. Technology: 3 Stars Korean brands clearly lead the way when it comes to driving and interior technology, offering features like ventilated seats, heated steering wheels, lane-keeping assist, highway assist, and more. Mazda seems to be somewhat stuck in the past. Having owned a Hyundai Tucson, I can attest that Korean cars are far more comfortable and stress-free for long-distance drives compared to Mazda. Summary: 4 Stars Despite pointing out some drawbacks of the Mazda in comparison to other brands, I want to emphasize that driving this car is a pure pleasure. The handling and acceleration are top-notch, and when you sit in the driver's seat, you feel truly connected to the vehicle. It's hard to describe, but Japanese and Korean cars often feel like they have a small core with a large shell on top, which can feel unnatural when compared to Mazda. I appreciate how confident and stable the Mazda makes me feel while driving. However, there's no denying that Mazda needs to step up its game in terms of convenience options and technology to compete with other Asian brands.

We got the PHEV, and I'm happy with the all-electric range. Most days we don't use any gas - only electric. I think that will save us aroun $100/month (less gas cost, more electricity cost). Power with the electric motors is functional, as is the gas mode with electic assist. There is a sport mode that is noticeably more peppy (more aggressive electric power). I feel like the interior is nicer than most Toyota/Hondas we've owned. Handling is surprisingly good for how much the car weighs, and I was pleasantly surprise by the 3rd row space. It's not as much room as a minivan, but more than I expected. I really like the styling of all Mazdas right now. I really like the lane-keep-assist feature. I haven't driven one that I liked until this one. It just feels like I'm being nudged in the right direction to stay off the lines. The Honda one feels like you are being pulled along the contour of the line (and it won't let you pull away from the line, which is disconcerting). A previous Mazda one just rumbles like I'm hitting the shoulder's rumble pattern. The Chrysler minivan was less annoying than the Honda's, but not as consistently functional. This one is more functional than any of thos options, and MUCH less annoying. Sound on the non-Bose speakers was surprisingly good. You could certainly upgrade if you want, but you don't need to unless your pretty picky. The interface between the phone/car is improved over previous Mazdas (which are pretty bad). I usually don't do leases, but with the $7500 off, plus $500 Mazda Loyalty and $1500 off sticker, it ended up being a really good deal. I did a 2 year and a 5 year comparison on costs (2 year leas then purchase after) compared to buying a use Honda Odyssey. We actually come out even in 2 years and ahead (more equity even with an ongoing payment) with the Mazda lease then purchase option. We did a single-pay lease, which gives a lower Money Factor - equivalent to 5% interest. That's better than rates at the credit union right now. (Did you know that the money factor is charged on the entire residual for the duration of the lease?) The Mazda people don't know how to do a single-pay lease though, so we had to wait for 2 hours for them to figure out the process. My only disappointment is the in-town hyrid gas mileage. I haven't done an experiment to see what real numbers we're getting on the around-town gas hybrid, but if it really is 24, that's not great for an in-town hybrid. Comparing to other similarly sied vehicles, it seems like it should be closer to 30-35. I guess we'll see.

We have really enjoyed our CX-90 S Premium. Beautiful design inside and out. Handling is superb (feels like driving a smaller car) and acceleration is impressive, especially at higher speeds. Infotainment is a little clunky when not using CarPlay. Safety features are nice and have saved me from a couple crashes. It’s been through a few recalls, but otherwise no major issues. Overall very pleased!

We purchased the PREV model as we wanted a larger SUV for occasionally hauling larger groups, and for carrying wine cases from our winery, and for the occasional road trips. At the same time we wanted spirited driving as we are coming out of an Audi. Lastly we wanted to do our part from an environmental perspective so getting good gas mileage was important as well! Our CX 90 has checked all the boxes and delivered on them as well! I read some reports on early production recalls however our late year production model has been flawless! Lastly - this vehicle looks great as well!

I like the acceleration, the AC, the seat blowers and that many of the controls are push button, not screen. I don't like the radar stuff. The vehicle decides where it will drive, when to use the brakes, how fast it will go when using the cruise control (slows down if coming up on a vehicle before you can change lanes), beeps at you constantly in heavy traffic and the foot activated tailgate opener opens the tailgate when going over steep road entry from parking lots (tailgate is broken now from the time it happened).

It's a little sportier than the 2021 Honda Pilot Ex I trade it in for. The Cabin is quiet in the highway and the ride is smooth. I'm looking forward to getting a better MPG for practically the same size as my previous vehicle.

Went shopping for a Subaru Ascent or a Honda pilot or a Toyota Grand Highlander and never thought about a Mazda. By chance we looked at the CX-90 and fell in love. This vehicle is luxurious and fun to drive and loaded with options that make it comfortable for a night out or long trip to our great national parks.

Had been impressed with my CX5 so assumed quality would carry over to larger car. Was a little leery after some of the ‘24 reviews but always a few hiccups on a new roll out. Just over 1500 miles so far and pretty impressed. 800 was interstate Hiway road trip. Love the plum exterior and the tan leather/suede interior and really like the fact that it drives and handles Like a smaller suv. Very happy and no regrets at this point
