Decelerates while driving

Soupy, 10/24/2023

This car is dangerous. It should be recalled. After owning it for 2 days it decelerated from 65mph to zero within a few seconds and left me stranded on the freeway. They gave me a loaner that was the same as the original and that one also suddenly decelerated on the freeway! This time it went from 65 to 44 and then suddenly started accelerating again so I wasn’t stranded but it was so dangerous and scary!! I’m not ever driving a Mazda again. We are currently working with them to get our money back.

I bought the 2024 CX90 and thought I was in love. A hybrid with 3 rows? Sign this mom up! BUT! It spent 110 days at the dealer for different problems in the 300 days I owned it. So many problems I can't even start to complain here. Save yourself the headache and get a Toyota.

Great vehicle hampered by its powertrain

Peter S., 03/14/2025
2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Preferred 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

This is one vehicle that showcases greater at a dealership but falls down when owned, mostly to do with the powertrain. The real draw for me was the value pitch of saving a ton on gas while maintaining the power of the standard gas engine. Sadly what I found was the abysmal return on that promise during cold weather months, coupled with a thousand small cuts that detract from the enjoyment of the vehicle. One area that could theoretically be improved via updates would be to drive modes. The normal mode bears almost no difference to the EV mode in practice. What the car needs is a Boost or Battery Hold mode so that you are not losing battery when driving on very cold days. You may find yourself getting as little as 1 mpkwh if it very cold outside (sub 15 degrees) and you would be better off relying on the gas engine and just utilizing the battery for boost. Sport mode would get you most of the way there but that will maintain higher RPMs than desired. You can achieve this manually by using the shifters which will engage the ICE but you are then stuck manually shifting to maintain that status. Also on cold days it will not let the battery get much below 20% and will automatically start to charge the car off the ICE which then hampers performance even more and you find yourself in an aggravating position of having a start stop system that is constantly coming on and off around that 20% range in city. Charging is another annoyance that I assumed would be less annoying in practice than it actually is. I found myself becoming hyper aware of my battery status and the constant need to plug in and unplug was painful. Charging all night to try to maintain a battery level that wouldn’t push me into start/stop purgatory is not pleasant and I longed for the simple 10 day refueling cycle I was used to. The final nail in the coffin of the powertrain is the actual cost of power vs gas. It seems the inline six cylinder gets pretty comparable mileage in the winter from what I have seen. If you are in a location where electricity is inexpensive it may be worth the hassle but if you are anywhere else on a good day you might be getting double the fuel efficiency on electric but even then the micro managing of the battery and headaches that come with it doesn’t seem worth it. On the bad days you will be wishing for an ICE only mode to preserve your expensive electricity. I came from a CX9 that died in a collision and I miss it everyday. In that vehicle I averaged 19.5 mpg. When compared to the cost of electricity in my area ($.18/kwh) you are actually paying more to run the battery in cold conditions if gas is around $3/gallon. With the weather getting warmer the PHEV issues are beginning to become less apparent but they still exist. As for the rest of the car it really is a gem. Fit and finish is delightful and the car itself is a real beauty. The only area that seems like an easy change to improve would be the center console is huge but the layout of the buttons/shifter/cup holders leaves a lot of wasted space. They should also add a manual gear shift to that shift lever as the paddles are hard to operate when turning. In the end I am glad we leased instead of purchased this CX90. At the end of the lease I will not be buying this but would love to find an inline 6 version to replace it. I would be far more upset at the investment if the EV rebates didn’t basically bring the cost down to the same price as the inline 6. Pass on the PHEV unless you have very cheap electricity that would make the value proposition more enticing.

A Lot of Car For The $$

I did my homework and the 2025 CX-90 kept ranking very high. Mazda as a brand as well. I want a sporty driving experience but with luxury and this car did not disappoint especially for its size. I also prefer rear wheel bias. I checked others but the HP & Torque of this car was the best for the money, It handles great on its 21 inch wheels abet it is a little stiff. I bought the CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus Gas version and it checks all the boxes. Very sporty, comfortable with nice luxury appointments inside & out. Excellent value. The only CON is the 3 yr. 36,000 mile warranty. It doesn't align with this class of car. Just got it so nothing else to report. Try one! I'll come back to update as I add miles.

Great car if you know what to expect

I’ve had this car for about 2000 miles. We’ve really enjoyed it and I did my research going in so I didn’t have many surprises. It’s a great car for folks that have a <30 mile commute and charge daily. We get >75 mpg factoring in longer trips on the weekend. I have been averaging >30 miles per charge (2 - 2.5 miles/kWh). It also has a high quality interior with plenty of space for families. The only drawback with this car is the performance - the 320+ hp they quote is not accurate. This car has 2 separate engines - an electric motor and inline 4 and it’s relatively hard to get them to work together (you either need to floor it or put the car into sport mode). It also significantly reduces the fuel economy and I’ve found it’s best to stick to EV mode if you can and adjust your expectations for acceleration. Again, I knew this going in and having an underpowered 3 row suv is a trade off I’m willing to take for the fuel economy, PHEV flexibility, build quality, and reliability. It’s also a good value at the price point I was able to get (just over $40k new with incentives) relative to other PHEV SUVs.

EV Range will go down to from 26 to 16 Miles!

EV Range will go down to from 26 to 16 Miles as soon as temperature outside drops to 35F ! A 40% Drop in range for such a small range to begin with, is False and misleading advertisement, the drop to 16 Miles significantly limits the car's practicality for everyday commutes and errands on EV. Drivers may need to charge more frequently, which can be inconvenient and time-consuming. P.S. While most major car companies with EV drop, even Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, and Chevrolet Bolt EV only drop 30%. In conclusion, this car is pretty much a gas in cold winter.

The best car I've ever owned

In July, we bought a CX 90 with the straight six and, in the six months we’ve owned it, it has been nothing but a delight. A couple of niggles though. I turned off the lane kept assistance and warnings—they were overly sensisitive and would beep WAY too much. Fortunately they can be turned off and they don’t reset every time you restart the vehicle. Next, around town, I started to use the sport function which bumps up the throttle response and takes care off acceleration lag. Ok, now to the good stuff. The seats are VERY comfortable. The Bose stereo sounds teriffic and the car handles better than any SUV we owned. It feels planted and stable on the road and the brakes are well modulated and stop impressively. The materials, fit and finish are all excellent, save for the rear interior hatch cover which doesn't click down—it just sort of rests on top of the compartment. Not a deal breaker but it does feel a little weird—especially since the rest of the vehicle is so well put together and thought out. Following are my ratings on a scale of 10: Engine: 10/10, Transmission 10/10, Audio System: 10/10, NVH: 10/10, Workmanship: 10/10, MPG: 7.5/10, Quietness: 10/10, Handling (for an Suv) 10/10. Prior to this vehicle, we owned three Honda Pilots and prior to that we owned two Pathfinders.

Mazda CX-90 is the way to go!!! Volvo? BMW?

Artisan Red Turbo S. Premium Plus!!! Sports DNA in a 3 row SUV. move over BMW, this one here has better handling, and look great while doing it. Luxury appointments are second to none. this one does not have a lot of compartment space, but it does have a large glove box and good space for your things. where is lacks in space, surely makes for it in driving mechanics and pure luxuriousness. This vehicle is not meant to compete with Kia twins or Pilot or GH for that matter. This one is RWD/AWD with Miata DNA. simply test driving this, does not uncover what you will love about this car. This car feels like a much, much, more expensive car. The interior will wow you; the driving mechanics will wow you. CX90 is an all around winner

I test drove the vehicle. I needed a replacement for my 2016 Acura MDX which I purchased new but year end for a price lower than the Honda Pilot I was intending to buy (that was a new model year for the Pilot and the deal breaker for me is that there was no on/off button for the audio...you had to go through more than one step on a touch screen). The 2017 MDXs had already arrived and the styling/safety feature were new so I was able to get a ridiculously good deal on the 2016 MDX...never owning a luxury type vehicle before and never intending to ever purchase one. I was very excited to learn how much though Mazda put into the aesthetics and engineering. All the prelim videos and reviews made it look awesome. My requirements were I needed at least a 7 seater and safety features (back up sensor among others). I test drove the CX-90. I loved the look, driving feel and really was trying to convince myself that I could make this work into what I needed. Alas...this model had no back up sensor. That is only available on higher trims...and the higher trims all come with middle row captains chairs. For my needs, the 3rd row seats are really not large enough. So that functionally leaves me with a 4 passenger vehicle....which doesn't work for me especially at that price. Even though the interior storage space is really limited (I wish Mazda placed equal effort on this as they did the styling and performance)...I would have purchased the higher model with a back up sensor if it had the bench seating so I could at least get 5 people in the car. The top line model is more expense than a base Porsche Macan...which functionally has the same seating and more expensive than the base MDX...which is a spacious 7 seater. Common Mazda...I want to purchase this vehicle in the future...how about putting all the safety features on all the trims: safety is not a luxury. For now...I put my money into the Toyota Grand Highlander.

Rented a cx90 with 1800 miles on it out of SRQ Airport. Exchanged it after a week for a Ford SUV. The Mazda was anemically powered with a touchy accelerator that didn't make the car go when you applied light pressure. If you gave it more gas , it felt like it was jumping forward. The ride was comfortable but did not instill confidence that it handled well. Very difficult to gauge distance from the front of the vehicle to an obstacle. Needs a bit of slope on the front hood. It started beeping at the driver from four feet away. The center console control system was a joke. Not intuitive at all. Had it a week and never figured out how to easily change the FM stations or how to create a station preference list. The navigation screen did not show all the street names and I could not figure out how to adjust screen size to make them appear. Not very useful when traveling in an unfamiliar place.

Been a long Toyota/Ford owner and I am impressed by Mazda’s direction since they departed from their relationship with Ford and continued to develop their SkyActiv Technologies. The CX-90 was our first Mazda and it looks and feels great to ride in. First and second row are very spacious. Third row may be a little squishy. The PHEV option has been a gas saver during workdays and only had to fill up on road trips. One thing to note is the long engine bay which may be difficult to work on alone for those that do their own maintenance. Overall, very satisfied owner with no issues so far.

Mazda not honest about the charging range

Jonathan, 11/10/2023

After 2 months and 10 days owning the CX90 PHEV, I noticed that when I charge the car to 100%, the battery just have a range of 19 miles instead of 26 that initially it charged to. Took the car to the dealer (Gunther Mazda Ft. Lauderdale) and they indicated that the car will charge to anything between 16-26 miles for electric range. I understand that the range would fluctuate depending on temperature, driving pattern, load on the car, etc. but what should be a constant, is that the car should charge to 26 miles +/- 1 or 2 miles. Not that the battery just take charge for 19 miles or 16 miles. I have contacted Mazda of North America and am waiting for them to contact me to get this clarified and resolved. If the dealer is telling the truth, then Mazda has set a scam since they are advertising everywhere that the car can have an EV range of up to 26 miles, but if the battery does not charge to 26 miles, then there is no way on earth, you can get that range. Very shameful.

The steering is excellent with minimal fighting needed for highway or curvy road driving. Excellent pick up, handles 6 people with no problems, excellent storage space and a quiet ride. Mazda is 50% owned by Toyota but more performance for less money than the comparable Toyota or Lexus models. Very happy with our choice.

Cheapest built $50k suv out there. For the price of this vehicle you would think it would have more standard features. No sirius xm, memory seats, no remote atart with key and doesn’t eve have an auto dimming rear view mirror. Pretty pitiful for a brand new model, Mazda dropped the ball on this one. But seems like all car manufacturers are finding more ways to stick it to the consumer by taking away options that should be standard. Vehicle ride and power is the only saving grace for this suv.

I was excited to rent one of these. I drive around 30 cars per year and was looking forward to this one. The car drove fine (6240 miles) however build quality was suspect. The gear shift knob rattled, hood appeared to be skewed of to one side, gas fill cover felt like a piece of plastic. It took me 5 minutes to figure out that the car has to be off before the cover will release. Mind you the rental was in NW Iowa and the air temp was -12 with a 25 mph wind. Turning off the car makes for a cold reentry. I love the Cx5. The CX 90 seems to cut corners.

I am a car guy. After years of owning most high line brands, this time I decided not to pay the ultra premium price, but to get a near premium product. One of my previous favorite brands was Lexus, which similarly overdelivered vs BMW, Volvo, Jaguar, etc. Other than the CX90, my semi finalist was a three row Lexus TX hybrid (a version of Toyota Grand Highlander). At almost $80K, it had some disappointing aspects, particularly interior quality and handling. Plus ho hum styling. My CX90 aced those details, was better on fit and finish, and cost $25K less! And drives like a German performance SUV. If the CX90 reliability is up to par, this car may be, dollar for dollar, one of the smartest car decisions I’ve ever made.

Nice car but over priced. To get to lane centering or adaptive cruise control you must upgrade to premium plus. This is standard features in cheaper cars. Additionally, the informant system makes the experience not worth it. Finally, if you tried the turbo version you will notice how quiet it is. But as soon as you try the PHEV version engine noise is excessive.

I wanted to test drive the least expensive version of this vehicle that came with a power tailgate and ventilated front seats. That would be the turbo premium plus and it drove beautifully and had a nice interior. It also retailed for over $53,000. The Kia Telluride with these features was just over $40K and was bigger. The Kia Sportage Hybrid was $40K.

The one thing I really find annoying in this car is the gear shift. For some reason, known only to a Japanese engineer or designer, they decided to make park be all the way up and over to the left. It's real easy to forget that over to the left but when automatic gear shifts have been designed the same, logical, perfect way for decades. No idea why car manufacturers seem to feel the the need to change something that worked great, forever to knobs, labyrinths, or this abomination.

Interior and exterior styling and appointments, and performance and ride of much more expensive vehicles. I'm very happy with my CX90.

Nice but does not compete with Premium brands

I read a few reviews stating that the CX-90 competes with premium brands and it does not. The ride quality is good but the acceleration is lacking compared to the GLC300 and the X3. I would imagine the CX-90 competes more with the X5 in size but I would not even remotely consider the CX-90 to be in the same class as the X5. The power and delivery of the B58 straight six is unrivaled in this class. The CX-90 electronics are lacking with no touch screen or wireless Android Auto or CarPlay. The shifter layout is funky and I can see new users stepping out with the vehicle in reverse. I had a sketchy incident with the car in EV mode. I was making a u-turn on snow and the touched the accelerator and the car almost spun out. It seemed to apply too much power even though I barely touched the throttle. It was fine when the engine was running. Aside from that, the CX-90 was very competent in the snow. My experience was in a week long Turo rental in the Rockies. I own a 23' X3 and drove a 23' GLC300 as well as a 23' X5 so the CX-90 misses the mark when compared to any of those vehicles. The only advantage the CX-90 has is that it can be purchased as a Hybrid. It is not a bad vehicle but I would not compare it with MB or BMW.
