We Love this Car!

We went to our dealer unhappily thinking our lives required a minivan. My husband said MPV or nothing. What's this one? It's such a wonderful compromise between the minivan and my now-too-small Protege. And the price is AMAZING. All the features my husband "had to have" on my car including the Pearl White color. Mazda's response to the public recall has been more than professional. We weren't happy to part with our car, but we feel the company is committed to our safety and am pleased they provided a replacement car. The car is quite zippy and very easy to handle. We have yet to see another on the road although we heard that they're selling fast.

I just traded in my 3 hatch for a 5 Sport and am so happy I did. This car, like the 3, just exceeds any and all expectations in every way. That is how I felt about the 3 - but they have improved some things and the car feels bigger. It's quieter, smoother, still tight, plus all the room is unbelievable. My 2 kids are under 4 and one is in second row, one in 3rd row - that way you can still sit with them and use the cubby under one seat for toys! Mind boggling the space inside - it doesn't look that big from outside ... elegant, sleek ... classy inside and out. I love the cloth and dash; it just works for me as do all the new Mazdas.

It Just Feels Right

Before Mazda went zoom-zoom, their slogan was "it just feels right." And that is exactly the way I feel about the Mazda5. Ordinarily you like a car that is well defined and has a specific purpose like the two seat sports car or the traditional minivan. However, the Mazda5 is one of those cars that is difficult to categorize. Is it a minivan or is it a wagon? Sure, it has sliding doors and three rows of seats like a minivan, but it is also compact and sporty like many of today's wagons. It even comes with a manual transmission. Imagine, the versatility of a minivan in a very unminivan like appearance. That's what makes the Mazda5 feel so right.

Major recall due to an exhaust/transmission design flaw which can cause the vehicle to catch on fire. After driving the car for three weeks, I have been without the car for almost six weeks while Mazda tries to fix the problem. Stay away from this vehicle until the bugs are worked out.

Brilliant car, great innovation. Feels like Jetta or Mazda3, tight, firm, no flab, great looks, modern engineering, safety up the wahzoo! Can't believe how it blows the competition away (Matrix, Vibe, Aero SX, Element, Scion, PTCruiser, Chevy HHR, etc.) with the level of standard equipment on the Touring model Automatic. Got $1000 off MSRP, car has easily $2,000 worth of goodies standard that everyone charges extra for. Side curtain air bags all 3 rows, front seat bags, dash bags, ABS, 17" alloys, 4 wheel disk, moon roof, 6 disk CD stereo, tilt/telescopic leather steering wheel and gearknob. Fog lights, Auto temp A/C, storage bins everywhere! Impressive Japanese fit and finish, too!

Essentially a great looking minivan at a great price. Fun to drive, very responsive steering. Cupholders EVERYWHERE. Navigation is very cool. Sliding doors on both sides, very convenient. The 4 cylinder provides plenty of horsepower. Domestic automakers take note. Mazda has their act together. VROOM VROOM.

I wanted to upgrade to a bigger car than our Honda civic, which was getting a little small for our two kids and their friends. I was very interested in the Odyssey, but learned from friends that the gas mileage in NYC was under 15 mpg. I found out about the mazda5 and am hooked. It's really easy to park (it's only a foot or so longer than the civic) my kids love bringing their friends along for a ride, and quite spacious when all the seats are folded down.

Had the vehicle for about 1000 miles now and I really like the thought that went into it. Finally found a vehicle that had what I was looking for without paying the premium price. Fuel mileage is nearly 30 on the highway but I don't drive it hard. Handling is great. Even considering the recall I still love it. My only complaints are things that should be easy to resolve.

This vehicle is both practical and fun to drive. I've read other reviews stating the vehicle is underpowered, I disagree. The handling is terrific, and it turns on a dime. Storage is very good with the seats folded down. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone who is looking for good gas mileage, cargo capacity, and enjoys driving a good handling car/van.

It's as if Mazda looked into the future, saw my family, its needs, and wants, and built a car around them. Seating room, extreme comfort, sporty performance, incredible handling, good gas mileage, good looks, great features and safety, and a ride that makes you feel like you are gliding over the road, with a low price tag. It's not only a sensible, but fun alternative to a soccer mom minivan. Mazda ... I love you!

I was considering a bland Honda Accord until I ran across the Mazda5 on Edmunds. This is a fun fun fun car to drive and it's certainly not your run of the mill vehicle. I love the handling, the "zippyness", and the build quality. The versatility of seating options is also great. I bought a base Sport model with just auto transmission as an option and couldn't be happier. Traded in a hulking SUV (13 mpg) and am getting 25 mpg in the city so far.

I would never buy this car again. I had to replace the tires, the traction was poor and they leaked after the first year. The third row is to small, no passenger arm rest. The interior can't handle every day use. The dash looks worn after barely two years and the one and only arm rest is totally worn out. Power locks don't work right. The only thing I do like is the sporty feel and look.

My wife & I took a '05 Ford Focus to dealership for taillight replacement. Ended up trading for an '06 Mazda 5. Very impressed w/design, detail, delightful appearance (inside & out). Many creature comforts, lots of glass (for great visibility). Audio system very pleasing for our preferences of music. Easily seats 6 adults comfortably. With seats folded down, excellent cargo capacity. Nice hidden storage under seats. Sliding side doors (both sides) are great. Easy access to 2nd & 3rd row seats, without banging shins as in some vehicles. Pretty car.

I've owned the '5' for more than 3 years, and the whole family (2 adults+2 young kids) loves it. I was looking for something spacious, minivan or larger wagon, with manual transmission. My previous car was a VW Eurovan with manual transmission, but the manual transmission is gone for current models. When I heard about the '5', it was an easy decision. I like everything about the car, except that if I don't drive it for a week, the battery is empty. The Mazda dealer couldn't find the bug, but replaced the battery a few times at no cost. Also, I expected better mileage and the AC is not great for people in the 3rd row. Other than that, fun to drive, lots of space, and inexpensive to maintain.

I was excited about this car at first because of the manual option with six passenger seating. That was short lived once I realized that this car gets horrible gas mileage for a 4cyl. I average around 20mpg. This is a 50/50 combo of highway/city. Then, the tires/suspension/alignment problems... I am at 67,000 and bout to purchase my 3rd set of tires! This will be the fourth set on the car itself. I had suspension problems right away and it was taken to the dealer 5-6 times. The last time I thought it had been fixed!! The noise was gone!! But the tire wear was unreal!! Buyer beware!! Factor in yearly tire replacement!!!

Just bought this car after much consideration. Considered many other choices i.e. minivans (Odyssey, Sienna, MPV), station wagons/suvs (Forester, Vue, Tucson, HHR, XB). This will be mainly used for carrying 2 adults and 2 toddlers with enough room to spare for a doggy carrier and luggage. Although not as comfortable as my Diamante, it's not too bad. None offered the value, efficiency and utilitarianism of the Mazda5. Not a speed demon because of the extra 500 lbs, the 4 cylinder engine holds its own on the highway. Surprisingly quick and nimble while maneuvering around the city keeping the tradition of zoom zoom alive. The brakes on this thing are excellent, comparable to a go kart!

We bought our car 31 Dec. '05. We knew we were going to purchase something to split up the kids, but had no desire to purchase a minivan, way too big for us. We also own a 2003 P5 with 103k+ miles and have had no problems with it. We love manuals, and when we saw this car, we knew we would be making a purchase as soon as the hit the market. Everyone one rides in comfort, because the kids each have their own little space where they can stretch out on the jaunts around town, or the trips from DC to Atlanta. We get great gas mileage; DC to Atlanta on 1.5 tanks of gas. Many people have asked us about the vehicle, and when they see it has most of the minivan items, they are stunned.

I was looking for a cross between an SUV (of which I've owned 2) and a station wagon. I've found it...the only one in its class. If you're looking for a 7-seater...the 5 is not for you. If you're looking for a compact 6-seater with awesome features and looks, consider the 5. So far, I'm impressed with its fit and finish and interior comfort level.

I believe this is a great vehicle for young families. The third row seats are essentially jump seats for kids. You can cram people back there for very short drives only. Very easy to drive, but be warned the seats are very firm (Mazda explains this as being "sport seats" - decide for yourself). The driver's seat now has multiple squeaks within the seat, starting to drive me crazy. I get 24-25 miles per gallon, with a mix of city/highway driving which I think is poor for a 2.3L 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission. Perhaps a bigger engine or 5 speed automatic transmission would help. Shame on Mazda for not properly advertising this vehicle - could probably double sales.

This thing is a best-of-all-worlds sort of compromise. It drives well - better than any other minivan or SUV you'll find. It gets pretty good mileage. It's very functional. It looks good. It's comfortable. Mazda clearly put a lot of thought into its interior (and exterior) design - all the controls are where you expect them to be, and are easy to reach. It makes excellent use of space. Fantastic car for small families. The vehicle is just very functional and fun - I've found it to be far, far superior in design to any wagon, SUV or minivan at its price point. I've hauled around 4 adults and a kid, and have not found power to be lacking power at all.

Comfort, butter like smoothness, agile, modern looks, true to fun-to-drive philosophy, good mileage. Have this car since Feb. and is really a pleasure to drive. Suddenly those long boring trips have become something that I look forward to. It is a van but not exactly, drives like a sports car. I initially drove the MPV but after getting behind the steering of this one, made an instant decision. I found what one normally would expect from Honda/Toyota. This is a very practical car and the. I have the Sport with A/T, 6 CD and nothing else - don't need anything.

Finally, a family friendly, smaller than a tugboat, affordable vehicle. The Mazda-5 will seat up to six (although rear seats for smaller folks), peppy enough to scoot through the hilly roads of W. Va. and Kentucky (recent road trip), yet still get better mileage than the EPA estimate. When rear seats are down, you have as much cargo room as some so called station wagons, plus more available height for larger items. All in all, a super value for less than $21000 ( including moonroof, fog lights, 6 disc CD, automatic climate control, projection headlamps, etc. - all standard on the touring package).

I have the manual, and it's practically perfect. It seems like the ideal combination of features -- small enough, light enough, and powerful enough to be fun to drive, yet economical. But large enough and flexible enough to be really useful without carrying around a lot of extra weight and size. My only concern is that the company doesn't seem to support it. I've never seen it advertised, and the dealer didn't even mention it as an available model even though it fits my description of what I was looking for exactly. No wonder that in the two months since I bought it I've only seen one other on the road. But the up side of that is that it feels special.

If you have a young family, you're hip, you want economy, reliability, something with soul, and don't want to look "tied down", then this is the car for you. My wife drives this thing, and I can't wait to drive around the corners on the weekend. Although this car has a ton of utility, I drive for sport, which speaks tons if you want to avoid the mediocrity out there. With respect to the recall, don't let that scare you. Everything is being recalled nowadays. I have a current generation Honda CRV that was also recalled with a similar fire hazard. It was recalled and fixed. No Big Deal. In fact Mazda's service topped Honda, because, not only did the give us a rental, but $500 on top! WOW!

We have two kids and a very large dog and we all fit comfortably in the 5. We downsized from a Sienna and we love the car. I suggest getting a standard 5 speed. Very very zippy and a blast to drive. The power even though it is a 4 cylinder is no problem with a stick. We've been getting 28 mpg with standard transmission.

The 5 is a great alternative to a minivan. Six can fit in comfort but with little storage room in the rear. We usually have the rear seats down which provides plenty of space. The gas mileage is not as good as I had hoped. We average around 21-22. We did have problems with the sliding doors not shutting, the grease in the lock mechanism was replaced and it has worked fine since. The lack of a arm rest for the passenger is a common complaint. It is annoying when you are the passenger. The car could use some more storage cubbies. I would really like something below the gear shift. The rearview mirror often gets in the way (in the middle of the windshield).

The GT 5-speed is a great vehicle - very flexible interior, comfortable, sporty, and very stylish. It handles very well, parks easily due to a short turning radius, and it has plenty of speed for the economy vehicle that it is. Love the little extras like rain-sensing wipers, the jackknife key, and the fold out tray in the second row. Quiet motor. Lots of headroom though i am quite tall. Love this car!

I use my Mazda for hauling my Arts and Crafts booth and products. With the seats down, there is about as much room as a normal minivan. The one major complaint I have about the vehicle is the fact it gets extremely hot in the summer and the air conditioning takes a long time to cool off the back of the vehicle. Another issue is the door locks. My son has a 2002 Focus, a much less expensive vehicle, and the doors lock automatically after putting the vehicle in gear. Last issue is the remote entry system... terrible, terrible, terrible.

We've had our Mazda5 for about 2 months now. (my other car is a 2003 Protege ES, so I like Mazdas...). You get a lot of car for your money - it's quite roomy, very quiet and comfortable on the highway, gets good mileage considering the size of the car (we're averaging 27 mpg overall), is reasonably fun to drive, and is perfect for a small family (we're 2 adults, our 6 year old daughter, and a golden retriever). Acceleration is OK (not too different from my Protege), but it's certainly not overpowered. ;-) Handling is pretty good, considering size of car (although I notice a lot of front end dive when braking). Brakes feel soft and underpowered. Great road trip car.

Historically when a vehicle of this type is available with a stick shift it doesn't sell very well and an automatic becomes the only choice. A Mazda5 with a five speed should not be overlooked. An automatic would take too much fun away from driving this car. I recently had five co-workers in the car and nobody complained of a lack of room in the rear seats or a lack of rear A/C. The car had no problems performing with six adults. Around town or on the road this is the best vehicle I've ever had. I show 20.5 to 21 MPG locally and 26 to 29 MPG on a long road trip. If that's not enough check out the standard features, power windows, power door locks and cruise to name a few.

Great, but not a Road Car

I have a base model manual with no options. I’ve had it for 2 weeks & 2675 mostly road trip miles. Great value, but one major negative: unsupportive driver’s seat caused back pain after a few hours, despite adjustable lumbar support. Never had the problem in my recent road cars (Civics & a VW Golf).

Overall good value for money. It cost less than what I paid for a new Camry 6 years ago! It has all the features that a family with 1 or 2 kids needs. Would not really recommend if you are traveling with 6 passengers on a regular basis. Sliding doors is definitely a plus point and makes taking the baby in/out quite a breeze. Interior, controls layout is quite nice. Seats are easy to fold and good use of space under the seats.

I've had my Mazda 5 for 2 weeks. Gas mileage is awesome compared to my gas guzzling SUV. I'm averaging 24 in the city and a recent drive to Los Angeles from San Diego was about 30mpg's. I couldn't be happier. This is not a luxury vehicle by any means, but if you like practical, this is the car. If you're tall or bigger you might feel it's too small. Getting my kids in and out is easy with the sliding doors on each side. I haven't had any issues with power. It gets up hills without any problems and merges on to freeways fine. So far this car is great for the price! I hope to get reliability over the years as it's too early to tell. Also would like to know how it does in crash tests.

After waiting 2 months we finally got our car. We had purchased it right before the recall so we didn't even see it until a week ago. This car drives smoother than any other vehicle I've driven. It has tons of zip yet lots of space in the interior. What a difference compared to our 1999 Ford Windstar that just died on us. The Mazda5 is also very quiet in the interior. I've almost turned the key not realizing it was on. And on the highway it performs well and is a quiet ride. I'm also impressed with how little gas this vehicle uses. After having a Windstar (glug, glug) I don't have to gas up as often. In the week I've driven I've only had to fill up once and I drive a lot.

We have 2 kids (7 and 5) and a dog. As the name says, no minivans allowed (been there, done that). Wife was leasing an '02 CR-V which was a great vehicle in itself, but with price for the CR-V getting up there, the Mazda5 caught my eye. I had the wife, go test drive one expecting her to not like it (she is a staunch Honda person). Turns out she loved it, so we decided to lease one. Of course this was 1 week before the recall so we don't get it until October. So far we are loving it. Fun to drive, just took 6 to breakfast (4 + 2 grandparents), and the sliding doors are keeping the carnage down in the parking lots. Overall a tremendous value for hauling the family around!

This car meets the needs of the American market, people just have to know about it. I'm surprised that Mazda has not advertised this vehicle. It has a hit on its hands. I love all the features for the money. It drives great and serves the needs of most families with. I traded in a Nissan Armada, used the equity & now have no car payment. It uses half the gas and costs half as much for an SUV with as much as this offers. Smart buy. If you can find one in area, you should buy it. There would be no reason to purchase cars like the xB, PT, HHR, Matrix or regular family sedans like Accord or Camry with this on the market. With Camry/Accord, you can buy this for less and get a get a lot more.

My sport model has the automatic transmission and I love it. Shifts are smooth and quick and the performance is fine for me. Doesn't downshift on any of the hills on my commute which I can't say for some previous vehicles. First full tank of gas 26 plus mpg. That's every bit as good as the EPA estimate, so I can't complain. I'm having trouble finding a really comfortable adjustment for the driver's seat, but I'm working on it. Great quality, lots of space, smooth quiet ride and willing engine. A lot of vehicle for the money. I love it.
