WOW... Me likes...
I have three kids and a wife and we use this vehicle always. Great compromise between the practicality of a minivan and the fun and pep of a sport car. We got it with the manual, very peppy indeed. Very happy thus far. Perfect vehicle for my family at this time. Hard to fit three full size car seats in a sedan/wagon/or two row SUV, this one does it all very well. Even though this is a "Ford" it is predominantly engineered and built in Japan; that sold it for us. All of this plus the NAV for less than $23K... WOW!
New Mazda 5 Sport M5
I purchased this car on 7 July and so far everything is great. I have almost 200 miles on it but have not had to purchase gas just yet so I don't know how the MPG will be. It is fun to drive and has plenty of room and the sliding back doors make access easy and you don't have to worry about them opening on the street side. The antilock brakes and engine immobilizer make it better for insurance. Over all a very well built car or minivan if you prefer.

Not Sorry the Grand Caravan was totaled
I replaced a Dodge Grand Caravan, a gas guzzling beast that was totaled by a semi with my new M5! We are a family of 4 and with the kids bigger, we did not need the stroller/crib space that we needed before. I have never been happier with a car! I got the 5 speed touring and love all the little extras it had to offer for a great price. It gets great gas mileage, has a great look that draws questions and second looks, and has the versatility so that kids can haul friends if need be. I love the sliding doors and the higher profile that keeps semis from driving over you. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to downsize form a minivan, but not lose the seating.
Great Commuter car
We love ours. It's perfect for commuting. I can drop three kids off to school, drive to work, and still have a fun drive while getting 20+ MPG.
2nd review
As far as the front armrest goes I think it should've been on the passenger side instead of the driver side because it doesn't make much sense with a stick shift. 'Can't, really, use it while driving because it blocks the shifter. I understand not having outer armrests for the second row because it would interfere with the sliding doors.
Awesome!!!
Awesome vehicle. Un-minivan minivan. Sporty yet practical. Beautifully built yet affordable. Perfect size for small family. Power is just adequate. Very good suspension, quiet and very fun to drive. Made in Japan so it should be reliable.
Awesome Vehicle, Great Concept
This car is so much fun. I didn't know what I was going to think of it when it came out. Mazda really did a great job. There is plenty of room for adults in every row, and the stow away storage is cool. I am so glad there is a NON minivan out there that I can fit all my friends into!
It's right where everything else isn't
This is the perfect car for us (me, my wife & 2-year old daughter). Handles very well, solid built quality, and great gas mileage. Very flexible seating. Exterior design was excellent, one of my friends thought this car was a hybrid. Sliding door was a great feature to have especially in tight spaces. Keep it up Mazda, ZOOM ZOOM!
Up and coming GEM of a car!
This care meets my needs PERFECTLY! Married father with twin boys. Us four are perfectly comfortable in this mini-minivan. If 1 or 2 more board, all I gotta do is flip up the rear seats, strap the kids in & the 2 extra passengers ride like kings in the 2nd row. LOVE the underseat storage in the 2nd row! VERY comfortable car & LOVE the fabric, too. The styling is very Eurochic, sporty, modern & cool. LOVE the ride & handling - surprisingly smooth & responds INSTANTLY to your commands. Very responsive braking & LOVE the automanual tranny - smooth/responsive. The car can be a tad too slow for my taste, but it's still responsive enough and very smooth for a 4 cylinder. Car feels much more expensive!
2006 Mazda 5 Sport
I believe this is a great vehicle for young families. The third row seats are essentially jump seats for kids. You can cram people back there for very short drives only. Very easy to drive, but be warned the seats are very firm (Mazda explains this as being "sport seats" - decide for yourself). The driver's seat now has multiple squeaks within the seat, starting to drive me crazy. I get 24-25 miles per gallon, with a mix of city/highway driving which I think is poor for a 2.3L 4 cylinder with an automatic transmission. Perhaps a bigger engine or 5 speed automatic transmission would help. Shame on Mazda for not properly advertising this vehicle - could probably double sales.
Sport-car like - - - minivan wagon?
Wow, what a car!!!!!!! Originally, looked around and found wagons with only 2 rows of seats. Looked at minivans, they are too big and hard to park on the street. Gee, saw an ad and went to the Mazda dealership. It looks very very sporty in person. A test-drive made me fall in love with the easy-to-use navigator, little body roll for its side around corners, good acceleration & I like the sport-shift feature of the AT. Man, enough room for really 6 adults & lots of storages & cup holders. Even got leather seat as an aftermarket add-on. Really nice. BTW, nice mpg for my first 2 tanks. Gee, can't wait to get some nice 18" wheelers and spoiler lip!!!!! Mazda rocks!!
Love this car
I bought my 5 and was one of the first in Canada (and North America) to buy it. I've been waiting for this car for a long time - finally someone has the guts to bring a European-style Space Wagon to North America and do it right! This is a great little car. Don't call it a minivan, because it's not. It's a station wagon, or a hatchback. The one thing you need to realise about this car is that you can either carry 6 people OR you can carry 4 and lots of cargo. Engine-wise, it has lots of pep, more than enough for the car. It gets better gas mileage than any other 6- seat vehicle out there. It's also damn fun to drive, especially the 5-speed.
The Most Creative Thing on Wheels
I became most interested in the Mazda5 when I found out a five speed was available. I can't believe how many features are standard in this vehicle.
Just what I was looking for
Picked up last week. Was looking for a vehicle with some storage/cargo capability yet with ability to carry 4 or more passengers, all for about $20K. Had looked at (photo) HHR and PT...but this was it at first sight. First one sold from my dealership.
Love our new (used) Mazda 5!
We bought the 2006 Mazda 5 two months ago after looking at other wagons for a long time. We liked the fold down 2nd and 3rd row seats. It is very similar to a minivan with the 2nd row bucket seats, sliding doors, and slightly elevated drive; but I still call it a wagon because I DID NOT want a minivan. Others complained about the AC/heat, but I think it's great - never turn AC above 2. The car drives great. Overall, I'm not that impressed with the MPG - we've only filled up the car twice in the two months we've had it, but both times it averaged in the low 20s. FYI - we're suburbanites in our 30s and only drive 50 mi/wk.
Good choice for the money
I bought our Mazda 5 earlier this year, we were looking for for an economical alternative to an SUV, and this does the job fine. I am 6'3", and the front and second row seats are quite comfortable. The gas mileage is great, the handling is first-rate, and it makes a great family vehicle. My wife picks up our son and 4 neighbor kids from school every day and they love the car. We've also managed to load bicycles, a large dog crate, and have plenty of room left over.
EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED
This is the car I've been waiting for. Un-minivanlike minivan. Perfect size for my family. Beautifully built, luxurious features yet affordable. Mazda got it right. So much fun to drive. Made in Japan so it should be reliable. Am so proud to be one of the first to have it.
my zoom zoom
I told my husband I didn't want that typical soccer mom look and we both wanted something that was economical for the whole family. We went online to find something that would work for us and came across the Mazda 5. Immediately the next morning we went to a dealership (3 hours from home) and found there were only TWO or THREE Mazda 5's available around this area. We opted for the Mazda Sport which has almost all the features of the touring including the 6 CD changer and sunroof but not the navigation system. We drove it home that same day. The only thing that I can find to improve the Mazda 5 would be a better A/C for the front and back of the vehicle.
I LOVE MY CAR
I just bought my Mazda5 and I am totally in love, it is so much fun to drive and I have gotten so many compliments so far. I love the fact that it drives just like a sports car but can fit so many people. We are going on a vacation soon and I can't wait to drive it that long. It's very comfortable inside and I love the 6 CD. changer. It's a lot of car for a small amount. I'm so glad I decided on this car instead of the RAV4 or Honda CR-V. It's much more unique. So far I was told I am the only one in my area with the Stellar Silver color and I have to say I like that.
So far so good
The 5 is a great alternative to a minivan. Six can fit in comfort but with little storage room in the rear. We usually have the rear seats down which provides plenty of space. The gas mileage is not as good as I had hoped. We average around 21-22. We did have problems with the sliding doors not shutting, the grease in the lock mechanism was replaced and it has worked fine since. The lack of a arm rest for the passenger is a common complaint. It is annoying when you are the passenger. The car could use some more storage cubbies. I would really like something below the gear shift. The rearview mirror often gets in the way (in the middle of the windshield).
Madza5 Workhorse
I use my Mazda for hauling my Arts and Crafts booth and products. With the seats down, there is about as much room as a normal minivan. The one major complaint I have about the vehicle is the fact it gets extremely hot in the summer and the air conditioning takes a long time to cool off the back of the vehicle. Another issue is the door locks. My son has a 2002 Focus, a much less expensive vehicle, and the doors lock automatically after putting the vehicle in gear. Last issue is the remote entry system... terrible, terrible, terrible.
Great Buy
I love the way this sport wagon handles. Hugs the road and responds well. I call it my "mini" mini-van.
Excellent Mini-Minivan - Zoom Zoom
Great fun to drive, love the fact that it can accommodate 4 carseats. Good fuel economy. Never get lost anymore now that I have the GPS. Perfect for a family with young kids.
Big enough, small enough...
We purchased this car 2 years ago because it was the only car of it's description sold in this country - smaller than a minivan, but with great space efficiency and the availability of a manual transmission. Pros: Space efficiency, smooth shifting manual transmission, unique exterior, loads of head room, better gas mileage than a minivan. Cons: While we've found it adequate (with tinted windows), AC could be stronger. Engine strains a bit - contrary to report elsewhere, you will NOT get higher than 31 or 32 mpg even under ideal conditions. We average about 28 mpg. Original tires wore out way too quickly (about 20,000 miles).
Is it a Van?
We have throughly enjoyed our 5 thus far. It has just enough room and we love the versatile seating. We downsized from an MPV and really enjoy driving the 5 much more than the minivan. MPG could be a little better on the highway, especially for a 4 cylinder but it is acceptable.
Mazda continues to lead the pack
As someone who makes it his business to drive a lot of cars out there, I remain very impressed with Mazda. The Mazda5 is a lot of fun and a lot of functional. I can't wait to to get aftermarket toys. The car doesn't need it, but with Mazda always focusing on the individual, instead of bland mass appeal, like some other imports, it should be fun to tweak. My only problem was having trouble deciding between the Mazda3 five door and the "5". They both have a lot of positives. It is just nice to have a crossover vehicle for those of us who don't want to move into an SUV and aren't willing to give up the fight and settle into a minivan. The "5" is perfect for my family of 4 and a 90 lbs dog.
Love my Mazda5!
The Mazda5 drives like a car, has the storage capacity of our old gas guzzling Explorer when you fold all the seats flat in the 2nd & 3rd rows, and has the convenience of an ugly minivan with the sliding doors and 3rd row seats. It's larger than the Toyota Matrix but smaller and infinitely more attractive than the typical minivan. It's a great little car!
vehicle for today's family
I have 2300 km on the M5 and I'm confident I made the right choice for a long term vehicle. I'd recommend the M5 for a growing family that puts a lot of miles on the car as the fuel economy is excellent relative to vehicles of similar seating capacity (just finished a 470km road trip with 7.9 l/100km).
So far so good
At first we weren't sure about getting a 4 cylinder minivan, but we were pleasantly surprised by the power/performance of the 5. My wife wanted a six or seven passenger vehicle, that was not some behemoth SUV. This has everything she wanted, and more (incl. moonroof, 6cd changer, airbags) for under $20k.
Mini Van??
We have found the car to be the perfect car for us. Other than the tires wearing out @30,000 miles, premature death of the battery and 1 bad rear door lock actuator it has been reliable. I have loaded it full to go camping and mountain biking several times; it will lots of stuff, however the 4 cyl does struggle in the mountains when loaded. MPG is great wife gets 24 around town. Doesn't drive like a mini van! Fun to drive.
Great SUV alternative
After test-driving dozens of hatchbacks, wagons, and small sport utes over the past few months and not finding anything that felt "just right," this vehicle appeared out of nowhere at my local Mazda dealer. Small on the outside for easy parking, large on the inside for people or stuff-hauling, car-based for better economy and sure-footed handling, but with a high, commanding seating position like the best SUVs -- this met all my needs. I think Mazda should be praised for introducing Americans to the kind of vehicles that Europeans and Asians have been buying for years but other manufacturers were scared to sell here.
Goes great with our RX-8!
Replaced our Protege5 with this, it is awesome and much better than any of the minivans on the market. We didnt want the lousy gas mileage of an SUV either. It also looks so cool next to the RX-8... both in black, which is the only way I like it... once you go black you never go back!
22500K 06 Mazda5
Had the car for 2.5 years. Really like the car. Agree with most of the other reviews, needs better tires, stronger A/C, 5th gear(overdrive)and interior light switch from drivers seat. Approx. 22mpg city/ 26-28mpg highway, thought I would get a little more. Overall satisfied with the car for the money!
6-passenger Sports Car
This is a combination that's been missing: a crisp-handling stickshift minivan from Japan. (Ok, it's available in automatic, too.) I want a reliable car that's fun to drive, but I don't want to have to rent a truck to bring home a TV or take newspapers to the recycling center. Mazda has taken the compact chassis of the Mazda 3 and mounted a little minivan on it -- the size of a station wagon, but the three-row seating and sliding doors that define a minivan. The performance is not that of a 250hp six, but neither is the gas mileage. Thanks, Mazda, for bringing the 5speed model to the US, not just to Europe. The Mazda 5 is sibling to the spunky Mazda 3, not the sedate Mazda MPV.
Excellent for urban and highway driving
I have been driving this car for over three years and I am very satisified. It is easy to maneuver and park in city traffic and has an amazingly short turning radius. It is very comfortable for four people traveling long distances. With the manual transmission it gets about 21-22 mpg in the city and 28-30 on the highway. Contrary to some other reports, this car does not seem underpowered to me. It goes through mountains just fine with four passengers, luggage and a bike rack on top. This may be due in part to the manual transmission. However, off-the-line performance is noticeably worse with six in the car. It's not a drag racer, but I have never had any trouble keeping up with traffic.
Perfect fit!
I just picked up my new 5 so I haven't put very many miles on it yet. To my knowledge it is the first one sold in my area. I was looking at the Mazda 3 and Toyota Matrix when I saw the 5 on the lot. The Mazda 5 is much larger inside and out. While I was impressed with both the Matrix and Mazda 3 (I need the cargo space of a small wagon) the 5 has greater space in the passenger and cargos areas. At 6'4" headroom is always an important measurement for me. And even with the moonroof the 5 had 2 to 3 inches more headroom than the smaller wagons. The ride, steering and braking are wonderfully smooth. The engine pulls strong with no vibration. The 3 and the Matrix feel harsh by comparison.
Fun to see, fun to drive
I wanted a sporty car but my wife didn't. Once we saw the Mazda5 we found the perfect balance. Very European for American style taste, but that makes it stand out of the crowd.
The best vehicle out there!
I just traded in my 3 hatch for a 5 Sport and am so happy I did. This car, like the 3, just exceeds any and all expectations in every way. That is how I felt about the 3 - but they have improved some things and the car feels bigger. It's quieter, smoother, still tight, plus all the room is unbelievable. My 2 kids are under 4 and one is in second row, one in 3rd row - that way you can still sit with them and use the cubby under one seat for toys! Mind boggling the space inside - it doesn't look that big from outside ... elegant, sleek ... classy inside and out. I love the cloth and dash; it just works for me as do all the new Mazdas.
Wow, what a car, what a price!
I just bought my Mazda 5 this weekend after looking at it for over a month. I am the first one to own it in my county and boy do I get some strange looks. I don't think people know what to think of it. I got it in the Stellar Silver Green color which is quite spacey, but I love it. The moms I have shown it to want to go buy one today. There is no other car out there with the size, looks, comfort, options and style for the money. No one can believe how little I paid for it. I think the Mazda 5 will be a big hit - sell your big SUV and ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!
Tokyo Mini Van
An absolute home run by Mazda! Finally a Japanese style "city minivan" has come to the world. This is the perfect minivan to have in Honolulu, or any other major city where space is an issue. It does not compromise on interior space at all, except in the third row seats, which would be ample for young children. A pleasure to drive, with surprising power for a 4 banger, smooth shifting automatic, & ride to match. Tons of carefully thought out details, like under seat storage, table/cooler holder, seats that fold flat with ease, logical controls, courtesy lights, slider doors that make entry easy for your back seaters etc. I drive a S500 as my other car, and I look forward to driving my 5!
Great Mom Car
This is the car I had been looking for but did not know exhisted. When I saw it, I knew it would be perfect for my families' needs. I did not want a clunky mini-van, nor could I afford a gas guzzling, pricy SUV either. The Mazda 5 seats 6 comfortably. I wish the interior were grey rather than black though, because the hot Hawaii sun really heats up the car. Other than that, The Mazda 5 handles curves, and bumps well, and it has a great sound system. Very fun to drive.
Nice gas-sipper that sits 6
Traded in my old Ford Windstar for this car. Given that the gas prices have been soaring for the past few months (and they will continue to soar), I chose this car because it has the space I need and the fuel economy I want. I bought the Touring edition with automatic transmission. Lots of people are saying that a 4 cylinder engine is too small for this type of car. I've been lugging around my family of 4 for a week now and I found the power to be more than adequate. The transmission is very smooth and responsive. Both exterior and interior qualities are excellent. Overall, it's a great car for the price.
perfect island ride
We were looking at small SUVs and within a day or so of buying a Honda CR-V when we just happened to go another car dealership late at night (hopefully missing the salesmen), when we happened on the Mazda5. It was exactly what we had in mind but didn't exist. We drove it once and within an hour owned it. Good gas mileage ($3.00 a gallon on Maui), super fun to drive although a little sluggish. Smooth for a 4 cylinder. Very comfortable seating with great seating visibility. Looks very cool and often find people walking around it in the parking lot. My wife loves the multiple airbags and ability to carry extra kids. Surfboard etc. will fit in the back if wife takes my truck. I've seen better A/C.
We Love this Car!
We went to our dealer unhappily thinking our lives required a minivan. My husband said MPV or nothing. What's this one? It's such a wonderful compromise between the minivan and my now-too-small Protege. And the price is AMAZING. All the features my husband "had to have" on my car including the Pearl White color. Mazda's response to the public recall has been more than professional. We weren't happy to part with our car, but we feel the company is committed to our safety and am pleased they provided a replacement car. The car is quite zippy and very easy to handle. We have yet to see another on the road although we heard that they're selling fast.
Our First Brand New Car
We were looking around for a new car to replace the Expedition for about 1 month. We looked at a few different cars (Pacifica, Maxima, etc.) until we found the 5. It has exactly what we are looking for! Sporty, good looking, easy on gas, safe (a lot of air bags) and room for family of 4 crammed with luggage. We recently did a 100 mile trip to Victoria, BC. and had no complaints. The handling is so wonderful, understeer is very, very minor. The Navigation works great on major roads and highways, but not in rural areas. Easy in and out of the second row via sliding doors are a blessing. We currently have 900 miles on the 5 and are averaging around 400 miles per tank.
Major problem
Major recall due to an exhaust/transmission design flaw which can cause the vehicle to catch on fire. After driving the car for three weeks, I have been without the car for almost six weeks while Mazda tries to fix the problem. Stay away from this vehicle until the bugs are worked out.
Thanks to the recall I got one at cost
I went and test drove it, loved it and bought it the same evening. Because of Edmunds I was aware of the recall and played hardball ... got an all option Touring with Nav/5M/Red for $20,450. I overall love it.
perfect city car for families
I wanted to upgrade to a bigger car than our Honda civic, which was getting a little small for our two kids and their friends. I was very interested in the Odyssey, but learned from friends that the gas mileage in NYC was under 15 mpg. I found out about the mazda5 and am hooked. It's really easy to park (it's only a foot or so longer than the civic) my kids love bringing their friends along for a ride, and quite spacious when all the seats are folded down.
So far so good
Had the vehicle for about 1000 miles now and I really like the thought that went into it. Finally found a vehicle that had what I was looking for without paying the premium price. Fuel mileage is nearly 30 on the highway but I don't drive it hard. Handling is great. Even considering the recall I still love it. My only complaints are things that should be easy to resolve.
Great!
We love this car/minivan! Lots of fun to drive and has a surprising amount of room!
