Peppy Little Sucker!
We got this car brand new back in 2006. 6 years and less than 33,000 miles later (wasn't used often until the second half of ownership), this car is quite the joy! The 2.3L engine has plenty of get up and go w/ a perfectly sensitive throttle and brake pedal. Brakes bite really well, but seem to fade kind of quick with repeated use. 5AT works well, but don't expect it to be butter smooth. The ride is firm, but not enough to make lunch run back out. I've gotten 26 city/34 hwy. Handling is this car's best trait! Turn-in is EXCELLENT, with plenty of steering feedback and response. But I don't like the "floaty" feeling when taking corners spiritedly and there is a bump/ridge mid-corner.
You have to have one!
I bought this car for my son, who is turning 16 in a few months. I'm considering buying one for me because it is so much fun to drive. The quality of the car is unbelievable. Test drive a Honda and Toyota then a Mazda, you will definitely be sold on the Mazda.

Slides around in snow really bad
If you are considering buying a used '07, this car is great, until there is snow on the road. It isn't anywhere close to being safe in the winter. The tires are too low. I'd have to change the wheels to get an all weather tire on it and with those big brakes, I'm not even sure it could be done. If you live where it doesn't snow, the car is great, buy it. If you live where it snows, don't even consider it. If I didn't also have a 4- wheel drive pick-up to drive, I would have sold this car the first winter I had it.
Endless Repairs
I'm a college student who bought this car used due to its great reviews. I needed a reliable car. This car is not that. I bought the car with 110K miles on it. In the past year, the A/C compressor ($1100 repair), alternator ($250 DIY repair), thermostat ($200 semi-DIY repair), and driver's side door lock ($10 DIY, PITA repair) all broke. There were repairs before that, but I honestly can't remember them all. However, this year has been the worst. At over $1500 in repairs in a single year (many of them being reduced cost due to DIY work), I honestly cannot recommend this vehicle as a used car purchase. I know that it was reviewed well on release, as that's why I bought one. I am convinced that the vehicle does not age well, however. I've worked under the hood and inside the door panels of the vehicle, and I saw countless cheap, plastic parts that are at high risk for breakage (such as the door lock rod clip that crippled my driver's side door). Additionally, my dashboard has cracked near the windshield from solar heat, the rubberized seal on one of the rear doors is coming out, and a piece of flashing in the rear bumper simply fell out and disappeared while driving. I owned a Toyota before this and it was rock solid... completely reliable. In that reference, I strongly recommend against buying Mazda.

Lemon
Ever since purchasing the Mazda 3 2.3L hatchback in 2014 there has been an unidentifiable engine issue causing the car to occasionally idle low and rough. What began as an occasional not starting on the first try on a cold morning is now a will not start at all even after having $2,000 in new parts and sensors being installed. The fuel mileage when I first bought the car was really good, the interior is incredibly nice and the sound system is amazing. If it weren’t for the constant engine issues this would be a really great car.
