Closest to a Mini 5 door Wagon !
I traded in my beloved '03 Mini Cooper. Loved that car, but utility demands forced to sell. But not disappointed so far, M3s is more versatile and has more pickup than my CVT Mini. I also note that the more "bang for buck" features were appealing. This is my second Mazda experience; my first was a '88 RX-7 convertible and it had no problems.. The only gripe so far is that the car doesn't have autolocks and the MPG's could be better. Also obviously the handling is not quite up to the Mini, more lean in corners than the Mini. But I find that the Mazda 3S is much more compliant and comfy on the poor roads in Hawaii. Sporty with a good cross of features and added utility just makes sense.
Great CAR!
I traded a 2003 Chevy Silverado in on this Mazda 3 5-door because the Chevy truck was the most uncomfortable vehicle I've ever owned. The Mazda 3 has a 2.3l inline 4-cylinder that has quicker zip than even my 6-cylinder truck had, and 30 mpg highway isn't bad. The drivers seat is very comfortable and all the controls are very easy to reach. I strongly recommend the 5-speed manual transmission for the most pep. Visibility is awesome in this vehicle. I drove a Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tuscon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Honda Civic (my second choice), and a Dodge Caliber before finally deciding the Mazda was the best choice. None of the other vehicles even come close in performance and visibility.

Fun to Drive, Handy to Have
I've had a manual 3s Hatch now for exactly a month--it has 1300 miles. Reasonable mileage (26-27 on suburban errands). Excellent for doing U-turns into parking spaces, taking stuff to the county trash-pickup, and transporting model airplanes with wings attached. Very high quality of assembly.
Terrific Value
I'm amazed with the level of equipment that comes with this car, for the price (I got the car at invoice). I have the 5 speed automatic, which includes sport shift. Love the looks, ride, handling, and utility. The car is a lot of fun and the gas mileage pretty good -- about 28.5 after two fill-ups.
Tough choice, but went with the Mazda
Mazda vs. Honda. Mazda won. Great European inspired design, comfortable interior, peppy engine, appears to be solidly built, and pretty smooth ride for this type of car. Nice little surprises like a radio that finds the stations with the strongest signals and programs them into a separate location. Great for when you're in unfamiliar territory. Wish it had better gas mileage (only 35 highway compared to the Civic's 40) and I wish ABS/SAB/SAC were standard (ended up getting the package...well worth it). Jury's still out on it's reliability, I suppose. Hope it lasts for decades, otherwise I'll be upset that I didn't go with the Honda. Tough for Honda to beat the overall package.
