I've only had it 10 days and I'm lovin" it! I went 36 miles in EV mode! it has more than enough power. A lot of bells and whistles like the panoramic roof, heated and cooling seats, etc. I got the Gravity Blue (Dark blue with flakes in the paint) which comes with a gray leather interior, I managed a nice 43mpg on the highway and was amazed as it stayed centered in the lane, even as the road curved. Handles great and is the quietest car I've ever owned. So far nothing to dislike, just some things I saw in the plugin Santa Fe, like window shades in the 2nd row, rain-sensing wipers. It comes with a 3.3KW charger but since this is the top one it should have a least a 6.6KW charger like the RAV4 prime and an 18KW battery instead of a 13KW, which would match the RAV4, but you can't get everything, oh well. This model is just as scarce as the RAV4 prime and believe me, if you search you can get one without the 5-10K over MSRP that a lot are asking which means that eats up all of the tax-saving the Government allows, sad. I drove 100miles to get one without the mark-up. Good luck finding one, scarce as hens teeth right now, LOL

Kia Sorento PHEV - uses gas and electricity

This is the best of the fossil fuel and electric worlds. It uses regular gas, regenerates batteries while driving, and plugs in to household current. I am quite pleased with this vehicle. It is easy to drive and incorporates many safety features. I am a “full sized” male and I can sit in it comfortably. It also has a great deal of space for hauling whatever you want. It is a good looking vehicle. The warranty is the best I ever had. As of this writing, I drove it 255 miles and still have 80% of the initial 12 gallon tank of gas left. I did charge it overnight a couple times but this indicates to me, I will be saving a great deal on my gas bill. I also don’t have to worry about a low battery because it runs on gas and it regenerates while driving and it switches modes automatically. The car has all wheel drive which I would not do without. It’s a nice vehicle.

Outstanding new PHEV

Although it isn’t perfect, this is possibly the most versatile PHEV at any price range - lots of room, a third row of seats, decent cargo room with third row seats down, good power, great ride and handling, and very useful tech. Some drawbacks are too much piano black plastic in high traffic areas, very little cargo space behind third row, compromised towing capacity, and heavy reliance on touch screen and capacitive buttons. At its core, the Sorento PHEV is the Swiss Army knife that will suit most families’ needs. Just like a Swiss Army knife, it may not do one particular thing better than a specialized vehicle (e.g., minivans or off road capable SUVs), but it can carry 6 people in decent comfort and and quiet for not an unreasonable amount of money. Only thing is getting one at a decent price at a dealership. I was fortunate to snatch one up before the initial round of inventories disappeared. 1-year update: All the pros and cons I’ve stated hold true after over 11k miles. One thing that gets a little annoying is the hesitation when transitioning from a stop to acceleration. There are also times when I want to slow down to a crawl but not fully stop (e.g. parking in my driveway) and it stops on its own instead of creeping. I have to think it’s some software that can fix this but there isn’t a TSB issued. Some reviewers in the media have also noted the hesitation and odd stopping issue so I know it’s not just my car. Other than that, the car has been mostly trouble free and still works well as a family vehicle.

Beware / Faulty Hybrid Battery System

Brian, 12/09/2021

I just purchased this car and within a week received multiple error messages -- "Battery Management System" and "Hybrid System" notifications. I took it to the local dealer who said it looks like the hybrid battery requires replacement (one cell showing no power) however nothing can be done in terms of servicing until the dealer hears more from Kia corporate. Since this is the first year that Kia has made the Sorento PHEV I'm worried that they haven't figured out all the kinks and now I'm stuck without a car as they figure it out. We've never owned a Kia before but had heard great thinks about performance and reliability. My advice would be to wait to see if this hybrid battery issue has a broader reach beyond my one-off issue because it is not fun to pay almost $50K for a car that breaks down in the first week!!

Better than Others

This car doesn't get enough good praises. Bought this used with 25k miles. We've had 3 PHEVs and this one is the most well-rounded PHEV. We had the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, BMW X3 PHEV, and Audi Q5 PHEV. All are good but all lack in certain areas. Pacifica was great for the family. 30+ mile range on electric but had problems. BMW and Audi are good but mainly focus on speed and not range. Only ~20 mile range which is not that much. The Sorento consistently gives us 30+ miles range. It does everything right. It's not the fastest SUV, but it's quicker than the Pacifica. Our family is finally shrinking so we can deal with the smaller space. The back seat is usable for short occasions with minimal luggage. Without charging the Sorento will average ~28 mpg on the highway fully loaded. That's pretty good. What's not so good is the size of the gas tank.... The most I've ever put in was 10 gallons. With no charge you can only go around 300 miles. With a charge you can go much further. Overall, this car is worth every penny. Wish Kia made the Telluride a PHEV!!

Best vehicle I've ever been in

We were mainly considering a Lexus RX450h hybrid, among a handful of other luxury SUVs, before considering the Sorento, and we are extremely happy we went with the Kia. We live in an area where we never run out of battery in full EV mode, which is a huge gas savings. For vacation we were able to get about 31 mpg without trying to get good gas mileage which was awesome. And the features are great, even coming from a fully loaded 2019 Accord it impresses. The folding side mirrors and electronic hatch are more useful than we expected. The ventilated seats are strong and the heated seats and steering wheel are so nice when you need them. And the best part is probably the feature that keeps the car in the middle of the lane. It's almost like the car is driving itself. When I drove with it off when it was windy, it was such a pain, but enabling that feature makes driving in the wind almost effortless. It's not perfect but it works way better than I ever expected it to work, and it makes road trips much less fatiguing overall. The ride is also very good, pretty much on par with the RX450h. Great car for road trips!!

We've had the 2022 SX model for 18 months and we love it. The gas mileage is great and it handles fantastic in the snow when we've taken it to the mountains. The inside has lots of seating room and is very comfortable. The safety features are above and beyond other car brands (even more luxury brands).

Great EV mile range / Poor gas range

I drove about 20k miles and I had a great experience so far. Electric only range is rated 31miles but it often gets near 40miles from full charge in ideal temperature (70-90 F). In cold weathers (20-40F), it can drop to about 27miles but it is sufficient enough to get around town for chores. A couple things I want is the heatpump so that the car can blow hot air without starting the engine and self-charging capability since this car’s hybrid mode only conserves current battery charge level. Other issues I am finding are related to electronics. The wired apple carplay often lags pretty badly and making the map function completely useless. I missed an exit or missed a turn many times due to the issue. Another issue is related to the electric child lock. I owned it for about an year and already the electric child lock is dead on the passenger side door. Other than those issues, this car drives solid. Electric motor is potent enough to push the car and get up to 60mph similar to other cars on the road. Suspension is pretty hard but it is not too harsh and gives more stable feeling. I paid for no gas in town thanks to the great EV range and it saved me a lot of money. I highly suggest considering the Kia Sorento PHEV

40,000 mile review

Owned since December 2021. Overall a very good vehicle. The car gets 31 miles on battery and averages 62 mph over the 40,000 miles. Used 640 gallons of gas over 40,000 miles. This includes several long distance drives. Average comfort in the front seats, a little on the firm side (compared to the Volvo). 360 degree cameras are a plus. AC is above average unless stopped or driving in slow traffic. Works better at 30 mph or faster. Put on Michelin Cross Climate 3 peak all season tires and handles very well in the snow. PRO: 1) Seamless transition between EV and ICE. 2) Excellent acceleration for passing on the freeway. Quickly goes from 65 to 90. 3) Better than average drive assist system. 4) Excellent mileage if mostly driving in town. CON: 1) No standard garage door remote on the rear view mirror on top trim. Every other car I’ve had in the last 15 years had one. (Ford, Subaru, Volvo). 2) Navigation is subpar especially compared to Apple CarPlay. 3) No 3rd party oil change places carry engine and cabin filters. 4) Local dealer service department is unimpressive. 5) Slower charging with Level 2 charger than other Kia models of the same year. 6) Really annoying auto shifting the vent system from cabin recycle to outside. 20 degree weather and it arbitrarily shifts to outside and a blast of cold air comes into the car. Have to manually reset to cabin as often as every 5-10 minutes.

Dangerous PHEV failures

Dave, 12/13/2023

My 2022 Sorento PHEV has now failed 4 times. The failure is that the engine doesn't start while driving when the EV battery charge becomes too low to run the vehicle. Each time it happened was very dangerous. Once was in 4 lanes of dense NYC traffic, another was in a remote rural area and the other two times were at highway speeds on 3 and 4 lane NYC highways. My dealer found no fault codes, said they've never heard of this problem before and told me there is nothing they can do. The KIA warranty is a big reason why I purchased this Sorento but that warranty hasn't been worth a plug nickle thus far. I heavily advise against buying this very expensive, dangerous and unreliable vehicle.

Car looks very good & gets great gas mileage. It's loaded w/ extremely Hi Tech options, many of which are too difficult to master & are dangerious at times... supplied manuals are difficult to digest & KIA support is absent. KIA's Customer Care/Support focuses mainly on window dressing like evasion of true customer support. I've had the car for going on 10 months & due to my 2nd potentially deadly KIA ReCall I've not been able to use the car for going on 6 months. KIA has no Recall resolution available for the car catching fire, even in your garage, due to a faulty Factory installed Trailer Towing pkg,

Dismal highway fuel economy for a PHEV

I love how the car looks, all the safety tech, and interior comforts. Due to availability issues I bought the car out of state. I used cruise control in Eco mode the entire way home and even fully charged the battery at my hotel. During my trip, I averaged 29.1 mpg which was way less than I expected even without a charged battery. To make it all the more painful, my check engine light came on just under 800 miles. My suggestion would be to save yourself the money and just buy the normal hybrid.

I bought this 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV SX Prestige in March 2022. Took a while to find one, and had to pay $1000 over sticker, but that was the norm for a new car last year. I "was" driving a Honda Clarity PHEV so I knew a PHEV was a must for me, and I now I'm fairly comfortable with the minor differences from a gas vehicle. But I needed a 3rd row because I'm hauling around my grandkids to and from places all day long. My choices were a Volvo XC90, Lincoln Aviator, or this. This vehicle by far was the obvious choice. Pricewise, it blew the others out of the water. Also, all features are standard, including leather seats and ventilated front seats, which are a MUST for me. It's roomy enough for everything I need, but not oversized where I have trouble getting it in the garage. I'm at 13,500 miles and not an issue, yet. Not recall because I don't have the tow package. The gas mileage is amazing and I literally fill the 9 gallon tank up once every 6-7 weeks, because I'm doing short trips all day (no more that 35 miles) so I'm able to drive all electric most of time and recharge between trips. One difference from the Clarity.... I could force the clarity to stay in EV mode 99% of the time no matter what electric consuming features I was using, but the Sorento will automatically go the HEV mode if you have the heated seats and steering wheel on and the heat turned up. It's a battery saving feature and it really does make sense, so not such a bad thing. And that feature makes sure the engine gets used more often which will keep it in better shape in the long run. The only complaint I have about performance - there a glitch in the acceleration (probably a safety feature) where if you are stopped on a steep downhill, like at a stopsign, and you go to pull out onto a level surface, there's like a 2 second delay in the accelleration - not a huge deal, but if youre trying to get out in front of oncoming traffic quickly, it really gives you a scare when it doesn't move right away. I AM able to override this by putting the car in sport mode (which reduces your gas mileage), but who has time to think about that. I just have gotten used to knowing it's not gonna accelerate quickly in that situation and I am more careful.

Purchased 2022 PEHV Prestige in July. Have been extremely happy with it. Have driven it twice to Arizona and back. Both dealers in MO and AZ do not have fix for Fire recall. Now the battery is totally dead and if I try to charge the battery the car goes nuts with high pitched squeal and flashing lights. Not sure AI trust it will be a long term member of this family.

If I just use it for my morning commute it gets a steady 999 miles per gallon. No joke. Just drive lesson that 32 miles a day, and plug it in. Nothing to complain about! On longer trips I use in all electric mode for city driving and then force it into HEV for the highway. I consistently get 60mpg when doing it this way. The only thing to complain about here is that it isn't a minivan. If you use the third row, no, you don't get any meaningful storage in the back. Other than that, nothing here Tom complain about. Epic.
