Got myself an Elantra GT sport hatch about 4 months ago and have absolutely no regrets with my purchase. As the title suggest, the is Hyundai’s take on the Iconic vw GTi, and although the Elantra gt sport is slightly down on power and lacks the lsd that the gti comes with, it out performs the gti in terms or standard equipment, warranty and reliability. If you’re coming from a GTI or any other true hot hatch, the gt sport may disappoint you, but if you’re currently driving the golf, mazda 3 2.5, ford focus, chevy cruze, Civic hatch ect, you definitely be surprised on how well and composed the gt sport is. This is no Elantra from the past, infact it drives more like a german car, perhaps that’s because ex BMW M division chief Albert Biermann worked extensively on the suspension( which now has a all wheel independent suspension only on GT sport models). Ive taken my car up mountain roads and it takes corners very nicely, although it has its limits. Power from the 1.6T is more than enough for DD. Overall im completely satisfied with the gt sport, driving dynamics, handling, interior/exterior, and amenities all exceeded my expectations.

Update after a 1 year and (20,000 miles)

I have the 1.6T Elantra GT Sport with the dual clutch transmission which i bought back in August of 2017. Ive since have put 20k miles on the car (yes I drive a lot) and let me tell you, this car to this day still puts a huge smile on my face whenever i get in. This is phenomenal car and an underrated one at that. By far the elantra gt sport out performs all cars it rivals such as, Mazda 3 2.5, Civic Hatchback, and VW Golf to name a few. For 200Hp and 195 Tq im getting excellent mpg about 29 mixed city and hwy. the amenities this car offers is just amazing, and dont get me started on the stock exhaust, sounds like a Subaru Sti. Best part of having this car is that in the 1 year ive had it, i have yet to see another Elantra GT sport model, and i live in Los Angeles where everyone drives. Overall this car is fantastic, if you want to stick out of the crowd get yourself the elantra gt sport.

Ok, so I needed a new car as my long term Volvo V70 wagon was approaching 300,000 miles. I considered several new cars and after driving several competitors, I decided on the Hyundai Elantra GT Base Automatic and boy am I happy I did!! First, the quality of materials and workmanship is a class above this price point. The doors close with a "thunk" and I've had zero squeaks and rattles. Secondly, the style of the exterior and interior is very attractive. Has a very upright, Germanic, business attitude about it and it holds a TON of stuff! You could sleep in back with the seats folded. Third, the car drives fantastic! Handles great and the sport mode really changes the attitude and performance of the car, turning it into a GTi light. Fourth, the fuel economy is excellent. I have about 3,500 miles and have averaged 28 MPG, driving very briskly. Fifth, comfort and infotainment are first class at this price. The seats are terrific! They hold you tight, yet are very comfortable. The infotainment has a fantastic 8" touchscreen that turns google maps into an 8' high def NAV, nice. Also has HD radio, bluetooth, and Android Auto/Apple Carplay. The base sound system is really good. Overall this car is a great deal and I love to drive it. I highly recommend.

Excellent engine with responsive acceleration, smooth ride, very comfortable, reliable, lots of room, love the interior - instruments are placed in a great location; easy read without taking eyes off of the road for any period of time. The exterior is beautiful with clean lines - gorgeous. The larger tires provide great traction in bad weather and I appreciate "hill" assistance because I drive a manual transmission. I have exceed the stated MPG. During on trip, I received 41 MPG.

Being a complete makeover this is like a new model so early in the sales year there wont be a lot of discounting but there is some . It is worth the window sticker price so a few dollars off is nice. ride is firm but not hard, gives great road feel and confident handling. Surprised the 1.6L gets worse mileage than the 2.0L engine. Everything about this car feels high end. fit, finish, performance, comfort. the only downside is that it is time to stop adding whizbangs to the entertainment console. Fiddling with it takes up too much attention. Some functions will not operate when the car is moving for this very reason, still it has too many distractions. It will take a lot of practice til i can operate the console with minimum eyes off the road. Oh, also it is great FUN to drive, especially with the paddle shifters. new car with 125 miles cause it was brought to my dealer from another distant dealer. Negotiated price was 22,600 plus fees, tax and license.

I was deciding between this and a Honda hatch,i'm glad i got this. The best freaking car for the value, you wouldn't get a lot of the standard features say in a Civic or a Corolla than this Elantra GT. The pro's are the large screen for your radio dash which is perfect for backup, the easy shifting for the 6-speed, the car hugs the road like a suction cup, you don't feel the turn as much when turning, Bluetooth of course with your steering wheel mount, you get a sweet looking rims instead of hub caps. Everything is pretty nice for the value. So now here is the con's-I'm having an issue a very noticeable vibration with an intermittent lose of rpm for example when I'm seating at a red light, the car wants quit even while the gear is in neutral. Took it back to the dealer where i purchased it to get it looked at back in August of 2018, their technician only replicated once and couldn't get it to replicate again. The vibration still exist and maybe tried to quit on me once since then. On the issue with the front windshield wiper where people can't flip it up to wash the car is not a defect, it's a hidden feature, the manual booklet tells you on how to get into "maintenance mode" where you can flip it up like you normally see. The front bumper is made out cheap plastic, since mine is white, lots of chipped/scratches on it already. Your radio preset once program you can't delete it, the only thing you can do is reset you radio dashboard. My commute is pretty long so i average between 33 to 36 mpg and that's at 75% highway and 25% city but if more on city and less highway it'll get about 29-30. Besides the issue I'm having, you do get a lot car for your money and I still love it. This car is really not a GT unless you bump up to the Sport trim level. I just call this an Elantra Hatchback.

Feels more expensive than it was

My wife wanted to replace her Kia Soul with something sportier but still practical. We considered the Civic Hatchback and Mazda 3, but we found a 2018 Elantra GT base (2.0 w/ 6A) with the heated seats/tech package for the end-of-year bargain price of $17.5k after rebates. This was $5-6k less than any similarly equipped Civic or Mazda 3. I also drove an Elantra GT Sport (1.6T w/ 7DCT); it was quicker, but not remarkably so. Shortly after purchasing we road tripped from Oregon to Nevada for Thanksgiving, with many twisty mountain backroads through the Cascades and Sierras. Handling was excellent, and power was just fine for mountain driving and passing. Most professional reviewers prefer the 1.6T in the N-line, but the 2.0L's 160HP is satisfying for an economy car. The cabin feels expensive, and the heated seats+dual zone climate control are well worth the extra cost on a snowy winter day. Ergos are outstanding for taller drivers (I'm 6'3"), although back seat space is cramped. We're seeing highway fuel economy a little above EPA ratings: 34-36mpg. Styling inside and out is handsome. I can't believe we got such a nice car for this price. Maintenance: I still do my own. Maintenance access is pretty good like on most modern Hyundais and Kias, and the first two oil changes were easy. The under-engine cover has a nice cutout for oil filter access. We've had zero reliability issues, a year and four months later the car still looks and runs like new.

I have the 1.6T Sport and the car is a great balance of fun and comfort. The acceleration is strong and in the sport-driving mode with the shifters, you're not going to be disappointed. The ride is tight but not overbearing - smiles around every curve. Everyone who gets in the car is really impressed with the interior design. The gas mileage is a bit under what is marketed but that's more of my heavy foot because the car is so fun to drive. On the highway with cruise control, it beats expectations. I was considering the GTI but the functionality, electronics, overall look, known reliability provided a better overall value of the Hyundai versus the incumbent.

Drove every car is this category and ultimatly picked the N-Line. Great value and performance for the money. Fun to drive, amazingly easy to use tech, quick and 32-33 real world MPG. GTI seats were a "No go" because I am a big guy and these N Line seats are perfect. Update 34,444 miles, “No regrets!” Zero issues Gas mileage is excellent, fun when you want to play and remote start is great in the Winter. 70k mile update Zero issues or problems, amazing car for the $$.

I’ve owned my 2018 Elantra GT Sport (manual) since January 2019. I got a good deal on mine (just under $20k) because it was a previous model year and they were just about to announce the new “N-Line” version. Long story short, it’s given me 17,000 totally trouble free miles. It’s a fun little car. It handles great and has decent power (not crazy fast — especially acceleration when you’re already at highway speeds, but it’s plenty zippy around town). I had a pretty long commute when I got this car, and it’s not great for that. It has some road noise and it’s a fairly firm ride. However, with a shorter commute, I’m finding I like it more. The interior is nice and simplistic, which was a major selling point for me. I wish it had a few more features like power seats and lumbar adjustment, and the radio doesn’t sound great, but it’s got heated leather seats and Apple CarPlay — which is enough for me. The car feels pretty solid overall, but there are some cheap plastic bits inside and out. But again, for the price, it’s hard to beat. My only other complaint is that the clutch has already lost all its feel. I’m not sure if that’s just how it feels after being broken in or if it’s wearing quickly. I can’t knock the car too much for that, since this could be normal and the clutch isn’t slipping yet. I have owned another older Elantra with a manual and it was pretty numb, but this car had good clutch feel for the first few thousand miles and I feel I’m pretty easy on the clutch. I won’t knock it too much for that yet... Overall I’m pretty happy. The car is stock for now, but I might try to get a little more power and exhaust sound from it.

Base engine plenty powerful, suspension a little stiff first 1000 miles. Engine noise is a plus and heard at high rpm's mainly. No silly safety features to make driving experience dull. I enjoy the shiftronic transmission in certain situations, like uphill when you can blow doors off a silly $40k SUV. Zero issues after 2 years ownership 14k miles.

The Elantra GT N Line in a 6 speed is a blast to drive. It handles great and looks great but a touch understated, which is great if you’re trying to have fun but fly under the radar almost literally. It’s fast enough when you push it and sticks to the road like glue. Well done Hyundai. Now bring the full N to America.

Lemon

I recently bought a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Sport in late September 2018 and the car only had 170 miles on it when I got it. When I reached 800 miles on the car I had transmission problems that was covered under warranty. Now I have 4300 miles on my car and it is in the shop again needing a new engine. The dealership told me they found that the engine was losing compression and a bad head gasket and all the connections on the radiator blew off and that there was small amounts of water in the intake along with calcium build up. And they are now saying they have denied the warranty claim due to water in the intake which they are blaming on me.. This company sales alot of lemons and then tries to get over on people so they don't have to admit they sold a lemon.. I have now gotten me a lawyer to resolve this situation and I would advise anyone that is thinking about getting a hyundai or a Kia to change there mind and look at other vehicles.

This car has a personality. I bought one with the tech and style package, and the features meets every expectation. It is fun to drive. Acceleration is a bit slow but maybe it's expected for a 4 cyl. I'm used to a 6 cyl car. The cabin feels big, and trunk has a good size storage space. Easy to get in and out. Fuel economy could be better.

Drives like a sports car

I really would have liked a sports car, but that would have been impractical in my circumstances. I needed a 4-door. I also needed sufficient trunk space. My Elantra GT Sport with 6-speed manual is the perfect compromise. The 1.6 engine, 201hp is great and a sports car driver will never be satisfied without feeling the perfect moment to shift for maximum performance in your hands with a stick shift. I do not feel like I settled. Great choice. Very happy.

This car is a solid performer with a sporty feel, comfortable seating, and excellent fuel economy. Hyundai seems to have put a lot of thought into the redesigned Hyundai Elantra GT and (after almost two years) the more I drive it, the more I like it. One caveat: Whoever designed the front end of the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT should be fired. There is no solid bumper (like on my 2004 Hyundai Elantra) to protect the cheap, very exposed plastic grill Hyundai put on that thing. As a result, some jerk backed into my car while parking and punched a hole through the plastic grill that is one step above styrofoam in durability. Now I'm faced with at least a $500 repair (and I live on a fixed income!) because Hyundai designer Peter Schreyer didn't think this product through. Overall, however, I would recommend this model to my friends.

At higher speeds everytime the car drove over anything othan a perfectly flat part of the roadway, the car suspension would absorb the bump with a floating almost swaying mregotion. This is a deal breaker as it would probably get me car sick if I had to drive this everyday. Hopefully, the N-line version with the better sport suspension will fix this poorly designed suspension. Update: This really should be a separate review but Edmunds does not allow it eventhough this is a different vehicle. I drove a 2019 Elantra Gt N line with the Tech package and it was much better than the base model as it had the 1.6 turbo with the dual clutch transmission, a multilink rear suspension (other suspension tweaks to give it a much better ride and handling). I almost bought the car but for the fact that Hyundai for reasons unknown, foolishly omitted the blind spot warning and rear cross traffic alert! This is a baffling as it is available in the much cheaper base models and this N line is the most expensive trim level (it this price point I would expect these safety aids to be included).

I ha e owned the vehicle for 13 months and it has 9000 miles on it and have had several serious issues. 1. 2000 miles msrk 2 tires bubbles and tires discontinued and had to replace all 4 tires. 5000 mikes later has to replacex2 mores tires. 2. Transmission keeps slipping. 3. Wipers keep hitting hood . Its been painted 2x already. 4. Car drives terribly in rain and snow even after upgrading to better tires. I was told I had to downsize to 17 inch tires and purchase taller profile tires. 5. Navigation system is terrible.. akways wrong. I use my phone(mapquest ) instead. Dont get mecwrong I like the car but the items listed above are enough for me to dimp the car.

this is a new model put out by HYUNDAI, I have only owned it for about six weeks. SO FAR SO GOOD? It is peppy, but not a lot of power --- it will get going from a stop light and it has enough speed to work on a highway. The only problem I have with it so far is that the sensor for the passenger side seat belt is very sensitive. When I put my smart phone or a bag of fast food on the passenger seat --- it sets off the "seat belt not fastened" warning light and signal. Hard to shut off while driving???? BUT --- is has been getting me great gas mileage!!!! The main reason I bought it is because it has a LIFETIME warranty on the HYBRID battery & system. I hate working with NEW CAR dealers --- if it wasn't for the great gas mileage and the lifetime warranty on the HYBRID system --- I most likely would not have purchased it. Ask me in a year or two how the car is working out....

I got into an accident and was hit front passenger side (not on door) car was totaled however I got out of it without needing to go to the hospital. I'm not sure if it was the way the accident happened that got me out ok or the car itself but I'm glad I was in my Elantra Gt when it happened. I loved this car, it handled nicely and had a lot of trunk space for the size, mine was a 2017 and the only issue I had with it was the wheels needed alignment when a pull to the left started happening, and that no auto-part shop seemed to know what kind of oil filter I actually needed? Oil is also a bit of a hassle to change because there is a guard on the bottom you need to remove (not that bad but more annoying).
