Love Our Hybrid!!

2010 Honda Insight EX 4dr Hatchback (1.3L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)

We traded in a REAL clunker (1988 Chevy blazer, about 16mpg) for the Insight EX, and couldn't be happier with the better mileage. The car has a roomy feel in the front seats and our dogs love the fold-down back seats. I love the video-style dash, and my husband loves spending $20 a week in fuel, as opposed to the $200 a week he was spending for his work commute. Steering is too tight at highway speeds; any steering movement causes over-response from wheels, and there is a definite roll-back problem on steep hills. I average 52 mpg for combo city/highway, and my husband gets about 42 for highway with hills. Overall great car for the $$, and our gas $$ savings is more than double the payment!

My Experience of the Insight

I've read numerous ratings and comments about the Insight and I find that it's hard to believe they're talking about the same car I've owned for a year now. My Insight has never gotten lower than 42 MPG and then only in sub-zero weather. In normal weather I always get 45, 46 or 47 mpg and that's after I do the math, which is just below the instrumentation's estimates. I also have a Prius for nearly four years, and the Prius is slightly faster, but the instrumentation is not as concise, but the Prius is now older than the Insight. The Insight is solidly built, and get's mpg greater than ratings which have been publicized.

I have only had the car for about 5 wks. She is very nimble and fun to drive.well built, great on gas.The dash layout is good and the info display keeps you informed. Once I figured out that the car is smarter then me, I just enjoy.

My first hybrid

I wasn't inspired by the Prius's unchanging design over the years, which started to look old after awhile. Honda is definitely offering something fresh, with real style. I have only had the 2010 Insight for about 3 weeks and am getting an average 46 mpg without using the econ mode. The driver feedback displays are really good, and help you to economize. I was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry before, and miss the size and power a little bit, but the hybrids really enable you to see what you are doing while driving, and encourage green driving. What a change, and now the other vehicles on the road seem so out-of-date. The future is electric and hydrogen, and the hybrid gets us closer.

Takes getting used to...

I've never owned a Honda or a hybrid, so this car was hard for me to get used to. My biggest complaint is the jerking it does while breaking (the electronic brake distribution). When taking your foot off the brake while slowing down, the car continues to break on its own. I miss the power of my sports car & feel the need to accelerate very slowly to keep my rating green. This car is priced to be a less expensive hybrid & is cut back on the inside (no lock on the glove compartment, small center console, lock button only on drivers side, 1 power outlet, no leather). There are a lot of neat features to make up for it though: Eco guide, maintenance reminder, auto climate, Aux/USB ports, sport mode.
