Honda got it right with the HR-V

After eight years and 40,000 miles, my comments after one month still apply: Subcompact exterior, SUV interior, very good acceleration and performance and fun to drive with 6 speed manual transmission, a true value for a quality car with tremendous versatility, LX well equipped and easy to figure out audio and controls - preferred it to the EX. Look forward to driving this car for many more years. As of November 2023, I have no interest in substituting any other car for my 2016 Honda HRV. The HRV is amazingly fuel efficient and one of the best-looking SUV's on the road. I have had no expense other than routine maintenance at the dealership. It is really unfortunate that Honda and other car companies are eliminating manual transmission with the accompanying performance and sports car-like fun. Manual transmission should at least be offered as an extra cost option to those of us who want to be directly involved in enjoying the driving experience. Honda's choice to pair CVT and turbo engines now makes Mazda a more attractive brand option for all models in my opinion.

Generally what I wanted

Bought 5/21/15. Have 2600 miles. Mostly short city trips. MPG 23.5 City, got 32 on highway one trip. Steering good. turning radius is tight. Style (look) good. Driver's seat is hard, added 1" foam to seat and back which helped. Lumbar killed my back. Could not find commercial pillow to help, make my own out of 4.5" foam, works. I have always had a sensitive back. Ride somewhat bumpy but acceptable. Entry/exit is good, had a 99 Civic prior which was too low. Could be more storage spaces in cabin. Finally came out with a cargo cover in October, but looked cheesy. Made my own out of 1/4" plywood, works gook. Road noise is acceptable, can talk to others. I forget to turn the lights on at night, because the dash is already lite up prior, different from prior car. Acceleration is acceptable.

Our newest "convertible"

I also own a 06 MINI convertible...this is kind of a convertible with it's cargo/storage options. It's one of the main reason's we picked the HRV, we love the fold flat rear seats for our dogs. The ride is nice and tight but composed and not uncomfortable. I wish the passenger front seat had the option to raise or lower like the driver's seat but it is comfortable and I easily fit my 6' frame inside. I enjoy the all touch digital dashboard but then I love Star Trek and the futuristic look. I don't have any issue using the controls. Most of the radio and phone controls are also controlled on the steering wheel and if your the passenger you can mess around and have some fun with the touch screen. I didn't think the Navigation could be better than our Garmin but it's way better. You can enter phone number's for locations instead of addresses and here's the big one, you make a change to your route and the Nav doesn't bark back, "recalculating". The Nav just adopts to your new route without the annoying voice. Gas mileage is good with our mix of freeway and city, making 28 mpg right now, that is mainly using the eco mode. Speaking of, even on eco the acceleration is good, it's not my supercharged MINI 6 speed fast but it is acceptable. I can pass on the freeway without annoyance. The mirrors and visibility are good and the right side camera helps a lot when switching lanes. I never used a paddle shifter before but had fun shifting up and down with the sport mode. I also found this useful going up longer hills on the freeway when maximizing my acceleration. Honda is known for their reliability and we are looking forward to 10 years with this vehicle. Time will tell but as we bought this car and the very end of winter in Wisconsin. This may be the 1st time I'm looking forward to next year's winter snow with the Honda HRV!

So far I LOVE this car. I had a CRV for 11 years and was ready for a new vehicle. I tried the HRV and like it's smaller build and comfort. The gas mileage has been great too! This car suits me since I commute and don't usually carry passengers. It has plenty of room in the back for storage, too!

Road Noise!

I really wanted to get this car. Very practical! Amazing seats that fold up! Great for the city with decent miles. I test drove this car three times. The road noise is unbearable. If you are stuck in rush hour with this car you will have serious headaches. I am not sure if its the CVT or just engine noise. The interior is very nice and i like the way it looks over the CRV. I have owned honda cars forever and this CVT/Engine noise is going to have me looking at other car makers. I am going to hold off for the 2017 to see if they fix these issues.
