Never thought I would consider a brand new car...
Let me start by saying I thought I would never ever own a brand new car. Not because I can't afford it, I just didn't see the value...until Honda released this wonderful gem. I thought it was time for an automatic, and like a few others I was drawn to the design, cargo space and ride of the Mazda CX-5. But I wasn't sure I needed slightly extra height/width and engine power, and I also owned a civic for years so I was drawn to Honda's reliability and headache free maintenance. I do try to hypermile when I can, so when I saw the HRV had a manual it became a reasonable contender. I test drove it, and it shifted like warm butter (that's a good thing). So I started analyzing all other differences between these cars and I decided the Honda had nothing more and nothing less than exactly what I need in an SUV. Both my cars now fit in the garage nicely with plenty of room and I will never have to worry about finding a big enough parking spot. On top of all that the MPG could almost be overlooked, but is definitely a nice bonus that reminds me I made a good choice. If you're coming from a higher/wider vehicle into the HRV you will probably feel cramped at first, but strangely with the cargo versatility (Seats that fold completely flat and magic seats) it feels like the same size as a larger size SUV. Comfort for me was fine, I'm not doing cross country trips and if I did it would be in a rental. My wife and I tested that we can both lay down in the back comfortably (5'9" and shorter), which will come in handy... we're taking it to the drive-in this weekend :) There's not much I don't like, but I'll reserve judgment on the thin cloth on the door uppers. I am concerned about it's durability, as I like to put my elbow there when I drive. Other than that, I really wish the call button on the steering wheel triggered Siri like the EX model, but the LX model had almost everything I needed so couldn't justify the upgrade.

It's a great all around vehicle
Hi, the new Honda HRV is a great value, for a little under 20k, you just can't expect more. My girlfriend has a 2015 Subaru Forester, it has more comfortable seats, it's quieter, it has more acceleration, the all around quality is better, it's a $32k vehicle and it shows. We'll take that on the longer road trips, but the Honda H-RV is a lot of bang for the buck, a great commuter vehicle, which is what I use it for. The 1.8L 4 cylinder engine is very smooth and delivers plenty of power, and 37 mpg on the road. I bought a 2001 Honda CRV for about the same price the 2016 HRV goes for, and 15 yrs later, the H-RV is a better vehicle than the 2001 CRV was. I just gave the 2001 Honda CRV to my son who is in college, 208k miles and runs like a top. If you want a great ride, buy a more exp vehicle, but the HRV is a very good vehicle. To borrow a line - It's great for what it is. I'm still very happy with the HRV now that it's April, 2019 now that I have put over 34,000 miles on it. This is a great all around vehicle with a lot of space with the rear seats down to haul a lot of things or a fairly big piece of furniture, ect. Plenty of power on the road, just drove to Arizona and back last month, held the road well in a snowstorm in NM, glad I put new tires on it before this trip.

Defect
Love this car, very satisfying all the way around. I'm older, in Michigan; I love how it goes in the snow and how much more practical it is, and easier to get in and out of, than my sedan. Big defect though going over tarstrips and bumps while braking sometimes--a kick back, knock, clunk . . . not so much a noise as a feeling in the pedal like dropping a tray of tools, kind of mechanical take-up or loose assembly coming under tension (hard to describe). Took it in right after new and they found nothing; clunking persisted; wrote Honda in case there was a known problem; they said take it back to shop; shop couldn't find anything; wrote to Honda to report shop couldn't fix and said I'd monitor it for six weeks and report; no reply; six weeks are about up and have had many significant occurrences; will report to Honda. What will they do? They say three times they can't fix it, it's lemon. Do they take my word for it? Will they have an engineer keep it a while? Do they have some way to resolve this defective mechanical problem? The car is a joy but dealing with this complication sure has taken a lot of joy out of ownership of a brand new car. UPDATE: I worked closely with Honda America but they explained a Catch-22 of HRV ownership: They do not diagnose defects that their computer program doesn't recognize. Thus defects such as the brake kick back problem found in many HRVs are acknowledged as existing but not addressed or covered, and owners simply "got a bad one." Honda urges owners of such defective HRV's to keep an eye open for recalls--indicating they have developed repair protocols.

Daughter s first big purchase
This car is perfect for a single active person or a couple with only one child. The front seats are great. An adult man can sit comfortably in the driver or passengers seat. The back seat is designed well so a tall item can sit upright with the removal of it. A huge plus for moving storage boxes, plants, or Great Dane. The gas mileage is superb close to 28-32 in the city.

Base model with 6-speed manual
We wanted a car that we could tow behind our RV. That said we chose the HR-V with the manual transmission over the CTV automatic. From a re-sale stand point this may not be a good choice....But I am having too much fun driving this car to care! The gearbox is easy to shift even though I have never had a "6-speed". When in traffic I sometimes skip a gear, like go from first to third to fifth and sixth. The engine has good torque down low so as long as you are not giving it a lot of gas it doesn't care. The cornering ability is great too. It corners like it's on rails. I told you I was having fun with this car. On top of all that it's getting over 31 MPG in combined city / highway driving. The other thing that amazed me was the interior space. It is tight without being cramped. I am 6'-1" and 275 pounds so getting in and out of some cars can be difficult for my 70+ year old bones. However I can easily get in the front or back seat and have plenty of head room. The EX and EX-L models have a sunroof which takes away some headroom so I opted for the LX model. It is easier to get in and out of than the Honda Odessey I traded in. The cargo space is very good for a car this size and with the rear seats folded flat it's even bigger. From the outside it looks more like a sport coupe than a 4-door SUV/Crossover. Most people don't realize it is a four door because the rear door latch is semi-hidden in the C pillar. All in all I really like this car!
