2dr EX
Excellent car for the price. Quite roomy for the class, 127 hp is more than enough for daily driving. It gets out of its own way without a problem. Braking is excellent. The VTech engine just purrs. It alone is worth the difference in price over the LX/DX models. Seats are comfortable, although at 5'10" I just have enough headroom with the seat lowered all the way. The shifter is sublime
OPINION
VERY GOOD FAMILY CAR
Honda EX Coupe
Over the last 13 years, I've owned four new and three used Civics. I've had no maintenance problems with my new Civics. They're awesome cars and dirt cheap for the excellent quality that you get. They are classy inside and out. I can't find a comparable vehicle. I've compared the Civic to the Celica and the Eclipse, both of which look great but cost thousands more and don't have the extras that the Civic EX comes equipped with (power everything, sunroof). That's why I keep buying them!
What happened???
This latest edition CIVIC fetures a very bouncy rear suspension, rattle prone interior, Sluggish engine thumpy transmission and questionable interior design quality standards. It will hold it's value as all HONDa's due. This is the only real plus about this car. The exterior design is beyond Vanilla especially on the very ugly sedan. Stay with a used model 97 - 00, an example of the finest CIVIC ever made.
From 94 to 2001/1994 much better year
Had this car for a year and traded up to the Accord. The 2001 Civic had a suspension change (2000 ?) Rougher ride, Noiser ride. Not impressed. Dealership was awful, did not buy my Accord through them.
C&D is right, this car is a loser
I would be surprised if there is anyone who can find a car with worse ride quality. The solution is simple and yet infeasible: put 200lb+ load in the trunk and you will forget the bumpy ride. Paint quality is aweful. Driver reading light went dead at mile 4 and the fabric insert on the door broke loose at mile 20k. Excellent gas mileage. I am delightly confuged why the resale value is still so high. That makes this loser keep the "best value" title. But Elantra and Corolla are ready to take over the crown at any moment.
Honda-perfect for communting
I have an hour commute to work every day, and my Honda has made this affordable. It is reliable and fuel- efficient, and I love to drive it! My car handles wet and snowy roads as well as dry ones, and I never worry about getting stuck anywhere in it. When I need speed to get out of a pinch, there isn't a problem. This car gets me comfortably where I need to go.
LEMON, Do Not Buy!!!!!!!
I have had nothing but problems with my car. i have had the drives side seat track replaced 3 times, the front end of the car has always made noise and Honda tells me i have to live with it. They tell me its normal for brakes to make noise. I understand this, but it not only makes noise while i am braking it also makes noise while i am turning and going over bumps. I have had the drivers side front strut replaced, the bushings in the front replaced the first week i had the car.
lovin' this car!
This is the first car that i own. i drove my dad's yukon xl for a year, but the gas mileage was killing me! my black honda civic is running great and taking good care of me in the snow and ice. this mileage is awesome! i've put over a hundred miles on the car in the last two days and only used a quarter tank of gas. the inside is larger than a jetta (my other option) which is nice, and for a small car, it's roomy.
A Favorite with Flaws
The LX rides well in the city. On country roads and freeways the sound of the road comes through the floor, annyingly so. The body feels as sturdy as a box; it literally feels like a go- kart with panels. It's been quite reliable in terms of the engine, but the body is falling apart. The exterior panels are so thin and the electrical windows are poor in quality; the passenger window sticks in open position when it's humid or raining. A fun ride with definite flaws.
Great Car
This car is a blast to drive and looks awesome since I tinted the windows.
Excellent vehicle in its class.
Great fuel efficiency, clean engine, a basic instrument panel and performance and reliability never matched by any American-designed subcompact or compact class cars. Over 35K with no major repairs (except for brakes and regular maintenance).
Great value
This is a great value. I get 30 mpg every tank, city driving. Yes, there is wind noise, the ride is not as smooth as previous models; but, no mechnical problems. The radio has been replaced twice. I test drove an Accord and I felt crammed in the driver seat; the Civic is just as roomy. I paid 14,800 US dollars for this car, and I feel I got a great value.
Honda's Done It Again!!!
The Civic EX is a great commuter car. Fun to drive, great on fuel, comfortable and low maintence costs. After more then a year of driving and over 68,000 miles, I've only had to change the tires and the breaks. This is a great car for someone on a budget or who's just looking to have a car that just doesn't break down!!!
Honda Delivers
I got 90,000 miles on my civic, bought it with 52,000. I have had NO mechanical problems, just brakes and tires. Change oil every 3k, rotate tires every 6k. Clutch is still going strong with no sign of backing down. 35 mpg in the city, 42 on highway. Do the maintenance recommended and you will have a car that you will get your money's worth out of. The ONLY thing that has gone out is the power door locks on the driver's side, but not a big deal.
Is Honda now controlled by accountants?
I purchased my 2001 EX after my 92 LX was totaled in an accident. The ride and noise level are much poorer in the 02 than the 92. Honda has also substancially cheapened the quality of many of it's body and suspension components while improving on some mechanical items such as the engine and auto transmission. Gas mileage is also much poorer than the 92 LX. After 2 years of owning this car, I still miss my 92 LX.
Civic LX 2001
I always wanted to buy the civic ... not any more. Car had so many problems. I could not belived it ... car was in shop almost every month. I had to wait 5 weeks for parts first time car broke (some computer problem), next time car broke I wait 6 weeks for air-bag sensor. The honda service was terrible. They totally do not care. I sold the car few weeks ago - what a relife. I done with honda.
Total disappointment
I got this car because I did a TON of research on safety, reliability and gas milage. I never bought a new car before and wanted to be sure I got the best car to drive my infant daughter around in. The first thing that aggravated me was that the fuel economy, which was a HUGE factor in my decision, was listed at 30city/38hwy - WHAT A LIE. I get about 25-28. I have brought it to two dealerships at least 4 times to ask them to find out why the milage is so low - they said they couldn't find anything wrong. Then I had several manufacturing defections, including a wire that opens the fuel hatch that had snapped. I can't wait to trade this in.
Suspension is crap
Bought brand new, careful maintenance, still issues. 20,000 miles - both front struts replaced under warranty. 90,000 miles - all 4 struts replaced, $900 cost. 100,000 miles - catalytic converter, 2 oxygen sensors, front control arm bushings replaced - $1500 cost. SRS light went off due to faulty drivers' side seat belt buckle, dealer replaced under lifetime warranty of safety equipment. 120,000 miles - rattling started and at 40+ miles/hour sounds like I'm flying a plane. Many suggested here that wheel barrings are out. Never left me stranded, but starting to require more than preventative maintenance.
2001 Civic Sedan EX
Smooth & comfortable. Easy shifting, great brakes & 30-42 MPG.
Nice for Economy Car
This has been a nice little car. Performance is great. The EX goes 0- 60 in 8.5 seconds, which is excellent for an economy car and is comparable to much more powerful cars. Rather harsh ride is an acceptable tradeoff for great handling and not out of line for an economy car. Funny thing I see here is the transmission that so many people complain about was built in Japan.
Civics rock
I think this is the best car -- by performance and looks -- for the price. Great gas mileage, gets a lot of looks, and the easiest to customize.
City Car
The Civic's an excellent city car- for short distances and especially for city driving, the car really is the best out there. If your driving habits include long distances, high speeds, or long commutes, then forget it. The noise levels above 75mph are ridiculous, the car is easily deflected at highway speeds by trucks and crosswinds, and the seats aren't that comfortable (no lumbar support). For short hops, though, none of these problems are large enough to be noticeable. Spend some quality time with the car, however, and you notice those things plus the fact that the suspension (on 01s at least) is too soft for optimal control.
Not what I was expecting
The car is very noisy.you can hear rain drops falling INSIDE your door.I had many other minor breakdowns: the gas tank doesn't know when to tell the gas pump to shut off so gas always overfills, the rubber bumper in front fell off, among MANY other things. Seats are hard, many features standard in other similar cars are not offered in this civic.I have owned this car for about 1 1/2 years, after the initial "break in" of the car, (no pun intended), it seems to run smoother. At least now the ride isn't so jerky.so if you don't mind a lot of time at the dealership the first year getting the little things fixed, this car is ok.
what else could go wrong?
Here's the list since I purchased it...4 front struts, 1 transmission, 3 wheel bearings, trunk release, 1 alternator, cd player overheats, enough rust on the brake rotor to rub on the wheel well covers,...and now every indicator light on the dash go on and off...while driving. Wish I had a big bottle of tequila to go with this lemon
great car for the money!
I have the 2-door EX coupe, auto. w/side a-bags, metallic silver. I've had no problems mechanically at all with the car. I've noticied a couple of my fellow reviewers mention dashboard noise &/or rattling inside the cabin. I have never heard any noise up to this point; in fact, the cabin is very quiet. I like the convenience features that came standard like the sunroof, A/C, cruise control (HUGE help since I drive long distances frequently), power windows etc and ABS. Fuel efficiency is excellent, especially on the highway.
Gotta love this coupe
This was my first new car. This car has never given us trouble, is a breeze to drive, and we still get compliments on the looks of it even though we haven't made any modifications. We get about 34 mpg, which made our trips to Nova Scotia, Niagra Falls, and Florida more affordable.
Great Car!
This is my second Civic and I love this one more than the first! The performance is outstanding and the gas mileage is superior to any other car in its class. It is VERY fun to drive - I wish I had purchased it sooner! I would highly recommend this car to anyone considering a four-door sedan.
Sure beats buying new!
Looked around at new 2006 Civics and stumbled across a nice loaded 2001 EX coupe with low mileage (34k), Honda certified, for less than half of the price of a new 2006 coupe (<$10k). Very spacious, smooth, nice features, ergonomic interior. You'll have to pry this car out of my hands in 10 years - unless you can find me something else that gets good mpg, is comfortable and fun to own, is extremely safe, and holds its value as well as the 7th gen Civic. I'm waiting, meanwhile I'll be cruising in my Honda getting 38 worry-free miles per gallon.
A car with attitude
The 2001 Civic coupe is a reliable car that is fun and somewhat sporty. It is sensible but still has its attitude.
My Civic, "TIMMY"
I love my civic, but it does have a few "flaws", such as the horrible shaking of the steering wheel when it gets to about 60 mph, i thought it was the tires or something, so i got them balanced and rotated and my car aligned, but no better. SRS light came on, because the seat belt buckle is going out, and i wish it had a little more "omph", kind of sluggish from the get-go, but once that VTEC kicks in,its on!
Civic LX Sedan
The only two bad things about the civic are the back seat comfort and the wind noise. The back seat has plenty of room, but having to carpool 50 miles a day, I get plenty of comments about there not being enough support back there.
Great Car
I've had my car for just over a year, i bought it used with 17000 miles. I've had no probs. with the car. I love to drive it and love to add things too the car. I've loved honda's since i had a 1989 accord with over 250000 miles and ran like a champ.
Nice car
Overall excellent vehicle
Best Little car ever!
I bought this car in 2001 brand new, I have taken it to a Honda dealer for all maintence. I love this car and it has never let me down. With 140,000 miles all I have done is very basic stuff and things that wear out like timing belts, brake pad, I've done my oil, brake fluid, and tranny fluid as needed and this car has never gievn me a bit of issue or trouble! It has been one very well built little car! If you follow the owners manual I think you'll be very happy with this car.
Disappointed
I love my Hondas, I've driven my share, but this may be the last one I own. The last two Civics had front end problems. The one I have now, has a rear main seal leak, which I'm not happy to hear at this point of owning this car. I can't pull all the way up to the curb because I may pull the entire front end off when pulling away because it sits way too low.
Good for the money
A very reliable vehicle, very low maintenance. The only problem I have had is there was a defective part in the transmission that had to be replaced, which the on-board sensors picked up almost immediately. The performance of this car is superb and it handles exceptionally well. The gas mileage/fuel efficiency is tops for anyone that has a substantial commute (about 30 mpg with 87 grade gas and about 40 with 93 grade). Not only is it a "green" vehicle, it is a very well designed and is definitely worth more than what you pay for it.
Great Metro Car
Reliable, efficient, fun to drive - roomier than earlier Civics. The car is perfect for the daily drives, trips to the store, school, work, etc. The driver has the most fun, especially with the 5 speed. Love that 2nd gear. BUT, not the best car for long trips. Noisy with a firm, busy ride. It'll storm a long at 85, but you can't hear the radio, and the old backside begins to tire too quickly from feeling every wrinkle in the asphalt.
Nice car
I bought my Civic with 40k on it. I had to replace the headliner because it was sagging. I am a hated car salesman so I do get a big break on items I also replaced struts a few and cabin filter. The car does very well in the snow and gas mileage is excellent. I paid 5500 for it. I will replace timing belt soon. I am very happy with this car
Great Car
I have had this car since 61000 miles and I am at 75000. It is still running strong and is an awesome car with great fuel economy. It is low on hoarsepower but I put a exhaust and intake on it to bring it up and it is faster. Needs tighter suspension and one of my struts has started to leak and it sometimes pops out of second gear but I have a warrenty on it to cover it. Overall it has been a great car and has saved a lot of money in fuel.
Good overall car
This car has been quite reliable, never stranding me anywhere. It is somewhat sedate, but that has kept me from getting any tickets in it. This is a benefit in the cost of ownership, which had been very reasonable. I got 96,000 km out of the original tires, the brakes last forever, and oil changes are cheap (compared to my diesel f250). It has had a few minor issues, but I will cover that in the suggested improvements.
Satisfied but desire more attention
I bought my 01 Civic new. I love the gas mileage and I find the car to be quite peppy. The styling is decent (interior and exterior.) The car has quality but for a Honda compact sedan I would expect a bit more. First, my insurance has gone up because Civic's are expensive to repair. I am not to impressed with the Firestone Tires which were bald after 30,000 miles. The car is noisey at high speeds and uncomfortable for driver and passenger on long trips. Occassionally the brakes squeak, and just recently my gas tank release lever stopped working and I couldn't get my gas tank open.
Honda Civic EX
Great car, fun to drive, economical, very reliable
Bullet proof reliable
I bought my 2001 civic couple lx new. I bring my baby to the Honda hospital for every oil change and inspection required. The only thing I've changed on my car in 8.5 years are wiperblades, not even a lightbulb. The suspension isn't the best, feel every bump pretty much, but completely bullet proof car.
Happy Honda owner!
Splendid! A very wise decision. The mileage is phenominal. Better than the sticker said!
Great car but that CVT tranny
Love the miliage.Easy controls.Timeless style that will look great for years!I had the car for 2 years and not a glitch to cry about except for the CVT tranny. The starter clutch assembly was worn! Never abused or pushed to the limit! Just regular driving! Strange. Honda replaced the clutch under warranty. Overall quality is top notch! I know the HX is hard to find, but I think it found me! I walk into a dealer and there it was! In the show room! The dealer said that many people who don't know any better, don't like it because it has no power windows! So what! I installed after market power windows! Problem solved! I highly recommend the HX! Thanks Honda!
Honda's reputation comes through
Good reliable car. With regular maintenance and responsible ownership, I've never had any major problems. Great gas mileage! Seems to be built well, and is easy to fix and modify if necessary, both internally and externally. I hope to continue driving this car for years to come.
Honda's don't last forever
Have owned this Civic for over 3.5 years, bought it at 60k miles and now has 132k miles. Haven't had many problems with the vehicle during this time, replaced brake pads and drums and that is about it. I bought this car based on Hondas reputation and the low operating costs (good gas mileage, doesn't require a lot of repairs). I would definitely not buy a civic again. The ride is very bumpy and it isn't a fun car to drive. Also, the transmission went out at 132k miles and to repair would be over $2k. The car is barely worth that much and needs new tires, struts, and engine work so it is not worth repairing.
car stalls constantly
I've had my car for less than 2 years and its been fixed 6 times. Ive had 2 new transmissions, a new computer thing, a new starter, they fixed the idle and have had a new alarm computer and the car still does not work! It stalls whenever it is put in to gear even though it is an automatic! I just filed for the lemon law so Hopefully i wont have to put up with this stupid car much longer. also it dongs very easily.
Nice Car to have!
I've been droven Civic Ex for 2 yrs. and my overall of Civic is nice! first of all, it is much bigger than looks. pretty comfort and can run around 400 miles for 10-11 gallons. it is really nice car to have.
