Amazing Korean Luxury Rocket!

2022 Genesis G70 3.3T 4dr Sedan AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo 8A)

Well balanced and solid car. Smooth gliding about town and rip roaring fun on the highway. It can do it all. The heated steering wheel and seats are welcome in the cold. Sure footed AWD. Head turner yet buttoned down and well mannered. On par with German offerings yet the tech is pleasantly intuitive and few inputs are required to get what you want. Bank vault solid build quality and the 365HP and AWD get it going any speed you want in seconds. If you had any reservations about buying a luxury brand Hyundai, give this a drive and you’ll be the first one in your neighborhood with the nicest car no-one has seen before.

This car has exceeds my expectations on so many levels. It’s power from the twin turbo awd v6 is a pleasure to drive. Extremely agile, yet luxurious. Fit & finish are very high quality. Looks are subjective, however this car has so many nice body lines. Add in the covered mainline (take note bmw/Mercedes’ Benz /Audi) plus the best warranty it’s a home run.

From Excitement to Regret: My Journey with the G70

Keith Rogers, 10/02/2023
2022 Genesis G70 2.0T 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

I purchased the 2022 Genesis G70 2.0T AWD Prestige model in November 2021, straight off the truck. My decision was based on months of research, and I was so certain about my choice that I didn't even feel the need to test drive it. However, my initial excitement soon turned into regret regarding the 2022 G70. From the very beginning, I encountered issues with the brand. It started with a subpar pre-delivery inspection and detail of the car. The person responsible for removing the vinyl shipping wrappers did a poor job, leaving light "zebra-stripes" all over the paint. Additionally, one of the wheels had sustained damage during shipping. It took weeks of persistent effort to address these problems, which were eventually resolved months later when I switched to a different dealer for servicing after my original dealer stopped selling and servicing Genesis vehicles. Unfortunately, the problems continued to mount over the course of a year and a half. The G70 exhibited peculiar electronic glitches, such as proximity sensors going off randomly, even when nothing was nearby to trigger them. The passenger-side power mirror frequently failed to fold in/out when locking and unlocking the car. The infotainment system would occasionally black out, necessitating a hard reset to restore functionality. Fit and finish issues also arose, including loose trim pieces on the roof, paint chipping around the edges of the rear bumper, bubbling in the adaptive cruise control sensor plate, rattling in the headliner, and complete failure of the dampening struts for the rear trunk lid (which I had to replace TWICE). The leather used for the seating surfaces turned out to be of poor quality. After just a year, the bolstering on both front seats appeared wrinkled and worn, while my wife's 2022 Mazda3 Carbon Edition still had seats that looked brand new. The driver's seat even began to bubble. After enduring these problems for a year and a half, I had finally had enough and decided to trade in the G70 for a 2023 BMW 430i xDrive Gran Coupe with the M Sport package. It was unquestionably a superior car in many aspects, including quality, fit and finish, and the overall dealership experience. Considering my experience with the Genesis G70, I cannot recommend either the car or the brand to anyone. The quality issues I faced, coupled with my customer service experience (which I should note is not necessarily the fault of the dealers, but rather Hyundai for not providing the necessary resources to enable dealers to represent the Genesis brand as a true tier-1 luxury competitor), make it difficult to endorse Genesis at this time. Perhaps in the future, Genesis will address the quality and dealership experience needed to compete effectively with established luxury brands like Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes. However, that transformation is likely to take years and won't happen overnight.

What a fun ride

2022 2.0T Advanced AWD. Aesthetically beautiful inside and out. Base engine has plenty of pep for me, with a nice purr. A drivers car so you’re riding low in the seat, which adds to the fun. Takes corners like a dream. Driving assist for long stretches of highway driving makes for a more pleasant experience. Trunk is small given spare tire and battery placement (fits a golf bag diagonally). Nice and tight overall with a firm ride but not harsh. Gets lots of looks!

2024 Genesis G70 2.5T 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

I have had a -22 G70 3.3T RWD as a company car and I have really liked it. While I lived in Europe I drove many different Alfa Romeo and Citroen so my opinions may be influenced by the fact that I very much appreciate a car that is different. I liked the G70 enough that I just turned the -22 in and got a new -24 without even considering anything else. For the -22 I thought there were plenty of highs: - styling (and interesting color options!) - nice design and materials inside. Non gimmicky dash that was easy to use, most things feel good to touch and use. - Also the screen and its infotainment wasn’t flashy, but functional and easy to use. - very good chassis. Good crisp turn in, lots of grip. Firm suspension but never harsh. - fantastic engine. Always a massive wave of torque available and more power than I ever would use on a public road. - Strangely enough I was seeing really good gas mileage. 27.5 mpg mixed and 32.5 highway is really impressive for a car with so much power. - Driving assistance features work really well. Lane centering is smooth and without the zig zagging that many cars have. The radar cruise is configurable and works well with very few hiccups. - No issues for the 37,000 miles that I drove it. - Free service is pretty sweet. Neutrals? Seats are okay. Not bad, but there are cars with comfier seats. Heating and ventilation is also middle of the road. Fine, but in no way exceptional. Bad? - Wind noise. Felt like always having a window slightly open. - Tight interior - for sure not a roomy car. But those riding along can survive. It’s fine for me, my kids have moved out and I have never been in the back seat myself. - The dealers. It’s easy to see why Genesis haven’t been more successful getting the market share that the cars deserve. Odd locations, and it’s not like they manage to hire the very best people in the industry. It still feels a lot like “Uncle Joe’s Used Cars” So the new 2024 is a 2.5T and the immediate impressions are that not much has changed. Still looks really good, still drives really well. The engine obviously doesn’t have the same amount of low end torque but still plenty of pep for regular roads. Not grin-inducing fast like the 3.3T, but good enough for me. The new Brembo brakes are much better. I’m sure they are more fade resistant for the race track, but in daily driving they are still noticeably better. More linear braking force and a lot less grabby. As for the rest of the changes I don’t understand the point of changing things for the sake of making changes? The key fob was a small very solid feeling thing with large buttons. Now it’s twice as large, buttons are half the size and it feels plasticky. Steering wheel buttons for cruise control and radio have switched sides - why? The easy to use climate controls have been swapped for a digital panel - not bad, but certainly also not better. They should have worked harder reducing the wind noise and less time fixing what wasn’t broken. All that said, most new cars are good. I have been driving the recent BMW 3-series and didn’t like it at all. The Acura TLX V6 is fine, Lexus IS is nice but doesn’t drive as well. The only car I have driven that I really would prefer over the G70 is the Alfa Giulia, but ownership costs, reliability concerns and distance to the nearest dealer made me rule the Alfa out. So - there’s the new G70 in my driveway and I am perfectly happy with that. Update - 10,000 miles in my impressions haven’t changed. I’m a bit surprised that the 2.5T is even more frugal on gas. I see just under 30 mpg mixed and 34-35 mpg on the highway. I’m a happy camper but worry that the G70 will no longer exist when it gets time to turn this one in.
